St. John's Group Email Prayer request: from Christine Winn

Please pray for a dear friend of mine who lost her baby today due to a missed pregnancy? Thank you.

DEVOTION: So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and she ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6

If you ever want to see some fur fly, all you need to do is say, "Our state fair has the biggest state fair in the country."

But size isn't the only part of their state fair that people like to brag about.

They'll fight about who has the best state fair, who has the most fun state fair, who has the most educational state fair and, of course, there is always who has the most interesting, fattening, really bad-for-you food.

Let's see, Wisconsin has chocolate-covered bacon on a stick. Texas has fried beer. Massachusetts offers fried jelly beans, and North Carolina has a "koolickle." (You probably could guess, but I'll tell you anyway: a koolickle is a pickle soaked in Kool-Aid.)

To my way of thinking, this year the food to beat is the "Big Kahuna Donut Burger" being served up at the New York State Fair. For a little more than five dollars you can get a quarter-pound hamburger sandwiched between halves of a grilled, glazed donut.

Add a few extras like a little cheese, some bacon, lettuce, onion, relish and you've just gulped down 1,500 calories. That should provide enough energy to see the entire New York State Fair -- with Connecticut and Rhode Island thrown in for free.

Now we all know that such things aren't all that good for us, but sometimes we just can't help taking a big, juicy bite from the temptation which has been placed before us: sort of like Eve and Adam, sort of like all of their children.

There is no doubt about it: out there somewhere is a temptation with our name on it. Satan and the world have spent considerable time putting together the proper list of ingredients which -- when presented at the right time and in the right manner -- will tempt our spiritual palate and seduce us into sinning.

We are sinners. This means we need a Savior.

No, we don't need a Savior from the Big Kahuna Donut Burger; we need a Savior from sin, our sins, all of them.

It is to be that Savior which motivated God's Son to enter this world. He came to be our Savior because He was the only One who could do the job. Only He could resist temptation; only He could fulfill the Commandments; only He was big enough, powerful enough and holy enough to pick up our sins and pay their price upon the cross.

His third-day resurrection from the dead is our assurance that all who believe on Him as Savior will be forgiven, freed and given life eternal.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for sending Your Son to be my Savior from sin, I give thanks. May I resist temptation and glorify His Name. It is in His Holy Name I pray. Amen. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MEN'S FRIDAY NIGHT BBQ, August 26!!

This is a time for men to come to the pavilion at church, bring your favorite food to grill along with a side to share and your favorite beverage. We will just hang out, maybe have a short devotion, get to know each other, and relax.

LADIES RETREAT 9am-9pm SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 at the SCHIRRS

I don't know too much about this day, because I'm not a woman. What I do know is that the sign up sheet is on the table in the narthex and the ladies always have a wonderful time of fellowship, Bible study, and relaxation!

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP THINGS COMING UP!

1. Sunday, August 28 HIGHWAY CLEAN UP right after church. After we are done cleaning up we are planning on going to the park for a picnic! Please come and bring a dish to share.

2. Sept 30 and October 1- Firstfruits weekend at the ROCK. Pastor Randy Wilken invites groups to come down to St. Louis on the first weekend of each month to serve, worship, and fellowship with other Christians from around the area. We are signed up to go down there Friday, Sept 30 and Sat, Oct 1! It is an unforgetable and wonderful experience. Make plans ot attend!

3. Last Sunday of each month- Fellowship and Bible study- We will meet at different time and at different locations throughout the year to have some fun and to get into God's Word. In August we will meet to clean up the highway and have a picnic after worship. Most of the time we will meet on Sunday evenings.

Invite your friends to all of these things. It is a great way for them to see that Christianity is pretty cool and can be a lot of fun!

HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS ARE SIGNED UP FOR THE MEN'S RETREAT?

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011. This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area. In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past. Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend. The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp. This is a beautiful setting for a weekend of adventure and growth. The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.

The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning. If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping. Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars. Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend. The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.

The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt. Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge. You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.

For JONAS BORCHERT, grandson of Don Nolte, who continues to be up and down because of chemotherapy treatments.

For EVELYN SHERMAN at Cedar Crest Rehab and Nursing in Washington for rehab on her hip.

Angie Scott had her gal bladder removed yesterday and a procedure today to remove a stone lodged in the bile duct. She is currently recovering in the hospital but is hoping to go home either this afternoon or tomorrow.

Unless you live in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and subscribe to the Lake Geneva News, you probably have never heard of Sal Dimiceli.

Let me tell you about Sal.

He is a 60-year-old real estate broker who writes a weekly column for folks who find themselves with their backs to the wall.

Folks from his area write him and tell him their story. Usually it is a story of desperate people who are trying hard, but just can't seem to make ends meet. No, we're not talking about the average Joe or Jane who finds things rough going.

Dimiceli helps folks who have had their utilities shut off, folks who've lost their jobs and have pawned their wedding rings.

As often as possible, Dimiceli investigates their stories. He visits with the people, he even opens their cupboards (he doesn't want to be conned by some smooth-talking charlatan). If their story checks out, he helps. Right away he gets the utilities turned on; he stocks their pantry; he gets their autos fixed.

Then Dimiceli hits up his network of like-minded helpers and tries to find a job for the needy folk, or he gets them financial counseling or he, well, you get the picture.

Folks, I've never met Sal Dimiceli and doubt if I ever will.

But I do like him. I like him because he's doing what John the Baptist suggested God's people should do, what the Savior said we should do.

Quite frankly he is doing what many Christians would like to do.

Having written that last line, it occurs to me that maybe it's time we got ready to do as Dimiceli is doing. All the reports I read say there may be more tough times coming. If that is so, there are going to be a lot of our friends and neighbors in need.

I mean a pawn-your-wedding-ring kind of need.

No, I'm not suggesting the church become a welfare agency. But I think that maybe in your future there may be a special case who, just once, could use a special hand up. If so, I hope you remember the example of Sal Dimiceli ...

and mostly remember your Savior who spent His entire life making sure your eternity would be different than that which you deserved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks You decided to help me, to bail me out of a helpless situation. If You place someone in my path -- someone whom I can help -- grant me the wisdom to see the opportunity and respond in a way that is most appropriate. This I ask so I may glorify my Savior. In His Name. Amen.

Bible Class on Friday, 8/12, has been cancelled. Many of the regular attendees are out due to illness and others for vacations.

For JONAS BORCHERT, grandson of Don Nolte, who continues to be up and down because of chemotherapy treatments.

For EVELYN SHERMAN at Cedar Crest Rehab and Nursing in Washington for rehab on her hip.

For LIL WINTER'S GRANDDAUGHTER AND UNBORN GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER as they are experiencing trouble during pregnancy and as the baby will probably be born two months early.

For RUTH CANTRELL who is at home and STILL recovering very slowly.


OUR CHURCH as we continue the CARE PROCESS.
