DEVOTION: Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright. Proverbs 14:9 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13

What does true confession and repentance look like?

The Pharisees were coming to John the Baptist to be baptized by him, but he said to them. "You brood of vipers. Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."

What does that "Fruit" look like? Is it not a willingness to make amends, to do what is right for and to the person you have hurt or offended? Is it not a willingness to do whatever it takes and whatever you are able to do for the sake of the other person?

What about when you hurt and offend God? What does that "fruit" look like?

Truth is that you can see true sorrow and contrition in a person by what they are willing to do and how far they are willing to go for the person they have offended.

Do the people you have hurt or offended lately know that you are truly sorrowful for what you have done or said? Are you truly sorry? Show them by your loving actions and words towards them. Don't just say your sorry, show that you truly mean it.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to be truly contrite ove rmy sin against others and against you. Help me to show it by my actions and words so that others may see my humility and that I may give all glory and honor to you. Amen.

We had anywhere between 60-80 kids last week and all of them heard the good news that Jesus is their Savior and the biggest Superstar!

It's Time to start thinking about our MEN'S RETREAT!!

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011. This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area. In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past. Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend. The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp. This is a beautiful setting for a weekend of adventure and growth. The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.

The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning. If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping. Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars. Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend. The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.

The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt. Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge. You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.

DEVOTION:

Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work." John 4:34

Did you ever get a letter asking you to report for jury duty? If so, what was your reaction?

From what I've been able to find out, most (but certainly not all) folks immediately begin thinking of an excuse that will allow them to be released from serving.

For example, one lady told a Chicago judge she had four tickets to one of Oprah's last tapings before the program went off the air. (The judge excused her from serving.)

Now there are good excuses for not being on a jury. Michael Wylie had such an excuse. It was a number of years ago that he was sent the letter to report. Wylie ignored the letter. A few more letters went out, but still he didn't respond. Since ignoring a jury duty letter is a criminal act in Massachusetts, officials filed documents against Mr. Wylie.

But, as I say, Mr. Wylie had a good excuse. That excuse was Mr. Wylie was dead. In fact he died shortly after the first letter had been sent out. Unfortunately nobody bothered to check. According to the state's deputy jury commissioner, the criminal complaint against Mr. Wylie will be removed.

Obviously most folks don't have as ironclad an excuse from jury duty as did Mr. Wylie. Most of us just find serving on jury duty to be an inconvenience. We feel that serving on jury duty gets in the way of our plans and upsets our routine.

"So what's the point?" you ask.

The point is this: yesterday I thumbed my way through Scripture looking for the excuse Jesus gave when He was asked to go to earth to redeem lost humankind.

You know what? I didn't find one.

This surprised me. After all, Jesus was being asked to give His life, and not just a few hours or weeks. More than that, Jesus wasn't being asked to judge our innocence or guilt; He was being asked to take our place on death row. And as far as being inconvenient ...

nothing can be more inconvenient than dying on a cross for someone else.

Look as long as you want. You will never find Jesus making up an excuse to get out of being our Savior.

On the contrary, what you will hear Him say is this: "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work."

Thank God for such loving grace.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I give thanks You are the Savior and I am the redeemed. You gave when I would not; You sacrificed when I would not; You lived and died for someone else, which I would not. Grant me the grace to acknowledge Your sacrifice that You have shared with me. In Your Name. Amen.

My grandson, Jonas, had a full body scan on Tuesday and found no other tumors. Wednesday he had a pet scan(vital organs),a spinal tap, and a bone marrow sample taken. The results of these tests will not be know for at least 48 hours. I am going to K.C. today or tomorrow with one of my daughters so will probably know more when I get back. Keep Jonas in your prayers.

DEVOTION: But now thus says the Lord, He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. ... Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by My Name, whom I created for My glory, whom I formed and made. Isaiah 43:1-3a; 5-7

The other day a pastor gave me hail. You know the icy stuff that falls from the sky.

Well, actually, he didn't give me hail; he sent me a picture of hail. This particular hail was about the size of a softball. It's the kind of hail you would be wise to avoid. But this hail was notable for more than its size. This hail had nasty looking icy spikes growing out of it. For all the world it looked like the end of a medieval mace.

As part of his e-mail, the good reverend asked, "What's next?"

It was a good question.

In the Pacific, earthquakes and related tsunami warnings have become regular occurrences. Industrial Japan has seen its economy knocked about by an earthquake and a close call with a few nuclear reactors.

In Europe airlines are sending their planes by different routes because of volcanic ash.

What's next?

Just about everywhere I've gone this spring and summer, people have been asking the question, "What's next?"

In some places, Iowa corn, which is often shoulder high by the Fourth of July, is now on its third replanting. There are rivers flooding which normally would be dry, and places which have always been green through the summer have been burnt to a crisp.

Half of Joplin, Missouri, is missing; Minot, North Dakota, is under water, and St. Louis has set a record for tornado warnings.

What's next? I don't know.

I do know the Lord is still there. I know He who gave His Son as the ransom price for our soul's salvation is still there. He's still watching out for us. He's still by our side.

What's next? I don't know ... but Isaiah had an inkling. This is what the prophet wrote in the 43rd chapter:

What's next -- possibly troubles but most certainly there will always be the presence and comfort of our caring God of grace.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, we pray that You will bring seasonable weather upon the nations of the world. Be with those who make their living by the soil and upon the sea. Grant them a suitable harvest reflective of their hands' labor. Lord, we don't know what is going to come, but we pray we may recognize Your presence, care and support in whatever may happen. This we pray in our Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 1 Samuel 17:42

Goliath dismissed David because he was a mere youth; Goliath made a big mistake.

New Castle, Pennsylvania's Jerry Brown Jr. dismissed an 89-year-old woman when he stole her friend's purse. His was also a big mistake.

Now it's true, this lady didn't have David's sling and three, smooth stones taken from a riverbed. On the other hand, she did have her cane.

Stones or cane, both can come in handy when bringing down a bad guy.

This lady rather than standing there looking all frail and helpless gave a whack to Brown's getaway car. She gave it such a whack she scratched the paint and left a dent in the vehicle. Between the dent, the scratch and the description of the robbers, the New Castle police were soon able to arrest Brown and an accomplice, Tatiana Vargas.

Over the years I've noticed the forces of evil tend to dismiss and discount God's people. We don't look like much; we don't sport halos like the saints do in the artists' depictions and most of us don't perform miracles.

Even so, God's people, the young and old, the weak and the frail can accomplish great things when they put their trust in the Lord. According to Scripture, it was in the Lord -- not those stones -- that David placed his trust. Indeed, he said as much to Goliath when he shouted, "You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the Name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."

Now I don't know which evil giant is coming against you.

I don't know what force of evil is going to try and intimidate you, frighten, bully and terrorize you.

I do know that when you stand by the side of the Lord, you need not be afraid. Indeed, as St. Paul said, it is because of the crucified and risen Savior's victory that the Lord's saved people are "... more than conquerors through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:37b).

Even when they're up against Goliaths.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, God of grace, today I give thanks. All around me there are forces of evil. They would undermine my faith and paralyze me into inaction. May I, trusting in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, move forward in faith. May I give to all a witness that in Christ God's people are conquerors. In the Savior's Name. St. John's Group Email prayer request from Don Nolte

Jonas Borchert, my grandson from Kansas City, is in the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with a rare cancerous tumor of the brain. This cancer's name is ewing sarcoma.

. What is even more rare is that it has attack the brain rather than the bone which is its usual way of attacking the body. You can read more about this cancer by typing it's name and pressing search on the computer. It attacks mainly adolescent boys. Jonas is in a lot of pain with headaches and in his left cheek area where the tumor is located. He is hooked up to an i v which has a drip of morphine to kill the pain and help him sleep. He is to have a full body scan today and a chest x-ray to make sure that the brain is the only place this cancer is attacking. They had to put a pain patch on his cheek and reduce the amout of morphine because he was beginning to have labored breathing. To much morphine can stop you breathing altogether. He will be starting Chemo this week to shrink the tumor so they can do surgery to remove it. This surgery will involve reconstructive facial parts. He will have a surgeon from Texas who has experience with this kind of tumor. They,at this hospital, which is a cancer facility, have never had a ewing sarcoma patient.

This will be a very difficult and painful procedure for Jonas and his family. Keep them in your prayers.

St. John's Group Email Update on Ruth Cantrell

Friends and Family

The operation went real well yesterday. As they had to remove a part of her bowel along with the tumor it will be some time before she comes home. She is at St Joseph West room 2253. Right now she is not feeling well and is on a lot of pain medication. In a few days she should feel well enough for visitors.

Remember to keep Ruth in you thoughts and prayers.

Hellmann's Mayonnaise - a bit of history.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England . In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico , which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York . This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York . The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico , who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as - Sinko De Mayo.

DEVOTION:

He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD. Proverbs 18:22

Pastor Abel, the man who confirmed me, liked to throw out little bits of wisdom.

One of those bits pastor shared with his confirmands was "Marry in haste, repent at leisure." While I can't remember Gilbert Herrick sitting next to me in that class, I'm sure he must have. I'm sure, because, if anyone took that expression seriously, it has to be Herrick.

Let me explain. For a considerable period of time Herrick has been looking for a wife. He's spent plenty of time checking out the prospects, looking over the field, but he just never made that long walk down the aisle. Not wanting to have any of that "repent at leisure" stuff, Herrick promised himself he wouldn't get married until he met the right woman.

And he didn't meet that right woman ... not until now.

Herrick met Virginia in a hospital hallway. After that chance encounter, they started meeting every day. Soon love bloomed and recently Gilbert Herrick, World War II veteran and retired postal worker, was united in holy matrimony with Virginia Hartman.

True, some have said that Herrick, who is 99 years old, has robbed the cradle by getting hitched to 86-year-old Hartman. They can say what they want, but Herrick knows she's the right gal.

When I first read that story I thought isn't that cute! But as I thought about it, the love story started to take on a deeper meaning for me. When Pastor Abel talked to us about "repenting at leisure," it was a different world. Back then you stuck with the person you were married to ... no matter how unhappy you were.

Today it's different. Divorce is in and long-term suffering is out.

But ... there are many of us who count ourselves blessed to have the helpmeet we do. Many of us, like Herrick, have been given just the right gal or guy.

This, too, is a gift from the Lord.

This is why, if you haven't done so, won't you give thanks to the Lord for putting such an individual into your life. And while you're doing so, you might want to include an extra prayer for another most special individual. Give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, your Savior. Give thanks for the world's Redeemer whose love turns pale all others, which we will ever know.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for having sent wonderful people into this world who love me, I give thanks. But I also pray for those who feel unloved. May they soon be surrounded by supporters. Most of all I give thanks for Jesus who has given the greatest love of all. In His Name. Amen.

"Kid friendly" meals will be provided from 5:30-6:00,festivities begin at 6pm, and end around 8:15pm.

Kids will explore a few of the many miracles of Jesus by becoming "stars" in the stories.

SECOND ANNUAL CAMPING/FLOAT TRIP COMING UP July 22-24
Four full hook up campsites are reserved at Onandaga Cave State Park. Cost is $54.50 for a site for the two days.

Saturday will be on your own: Please check your newsletter for all of the fun stuff there is to do.

Sunday the floating group will leave from Ozark Outdoors at 10am to do a five mile float which should take 3-5 hours. Cost to float in a canoe is $17.50 per person with two people per canoe. Rafts are $22 a person and tubes are $20.

There may be a change to the arrangements previously mentioned, but it will not change the day, only the time. The day will remian on Friday. It would just be the difference of an hour or two to allow for visitation beforehand.
