DEVOTION:
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD. Proverbs 18:22

Pastor Abel, the man who confirmed me, liked to throw out little bits of wisdom.

One of those bits pastor shared with his confirmands was "Marry in haste, repent at leisure." While I can't remember Gilbert Herrick sitting next to me in that class, I'm sure he must have. I'm sure, because, if anyone took that expression seriously, it has to be Herrick.

Let me explain. For a considerable period of time Herrick has been looking for a wife. He's spent plenty of time checking out the prospects, looking over the field, but he just never made that long walk down the aisle. Not wanting to have any of that "repent at leisure" stuff, Herrick promised himself he wouldn't get married until he met the right woman.

And he didn't meet that right woman ... not until now.

Herrick met Virginia in a hospital hallway. After that chance encounter, they started meeting every day. Soon love bloomed and recently Gilbert Herrick, World War II veteran and retired postal worker, was united in holy matrimony with Virginia Hartman.

True, some have said that Herrick, who is 99 years old, has robbed the cradle by getting hitched to 86-year-old Hartman. They can say what they want, but Herrick knows she's the right gal.

When I first read that story I thought isn't that cute! But as I thought about it, the love story started to take on a deeper meaning for me. When Pastor Abel talked to us about "repenting at leisure," it was a different world. Back then you stuck with the person you were married to ... no matter how unhappy you were.

Today it's different. Divorce is in and long-term suffering is out.

But ... there are many of us who count ourselves blessed to have the helpmeet we do. Many of us, like Herrick, have been given just the right gal or guy.

This, too, is a gift from the Lord.

This is why, if you haven't done so, won't you give thanks to the Lord for putting such an individual into your life. And while you're doing so, you might want to include an extra prayer for another most special individual. Give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, your Savior. Give thanks for the world's Redeemer whose love turns pale all others, which we will ever know.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for having sent wonderful people into this world who love me, I give thanks. But I also pray for those who feel unloved. May they soon be surrounded by supporters. Most of all I give thanks for Jesus who has given the greatest love of all. In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: How amiable are Thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Psalm 84:1-2 (KJV)

Tim Rutkowski, prosecutor for Michigan's Huron County, doesn't often bring charges against seven-year-old boys.

No, he doesn't do it often, but that doesn't mean he doesn't do it at all.

As proof, I point you to a unique event that took place a few weeks ago when, as a caring civil servant, he charged a little boy with the unlawful use of a vehicle. In this case the vehicle was the family car. Hitting speeds of more than 50 miles per hour, the boy drove more than 20 miles before the police stopped him.

The officers who were there said that when they looked into the vehicle, the lad was crying. The boy, who is being raised by his mother and a foster father, kept saying, "I want to go to my dad's."

So strong was the boy's desire to be with his dad, the county prosecutor wanted to make sure nothing was wrong in his home. That's why he filed the charges.

Now you know and I know that little boy was wrong and foolish. Along with many other mistakes he had endangered his life and that of others. Yes, the boy did many things wrong, but he did one thing right: he had an overwhelming, all-consuming desire to see and be with his father.

It occurs to me the Psalmist was describing the same kind of intense relationship with the Lord when he wrote the verse that serves as the theme for our devotion. He said, "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God."

When I read that verse I wondered how many people really feel that way about the Lord. Reluctantly, I think the percentage is probably pretty small.

And although there are probably many reasons, one of the greatest difficulties is most folks seldom stop to think about what the Lord has done for them. The Father's love which reaches out to disobedient sinners, the Savior's blood-sealed sacrifice which pays the price to buy us back from our abductors, the Holy Spirit's patient calling and continuous encouragement are all obvious signs of God's great grace.

Every day in a multitude of ways the Lord shows the intensity of His caring. At the same time, through difficulties, intrusions, pains, challenges and seductions, the world tries to cloud and cover that grace so we don't see it, so our souls don't long for God's love.

This is why this Daily Devotion encourages you to take a few moments and see if you -- like the little boy -- want to be with your Father, Your Savior, the Spirit. If you do not yearn to be with the Person who loves you more than anyone, then take some time to remember and consider His faithful, ongoing gifts to you.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me appreciate all You have done to save me. Accept this gratitude and let my thankfulness daily increase. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Prayer request for Michelle Woolf

Michelle Woolf had surgery last week on Tues. to remove a lump from her thyroid that the docs were concerned could be cancerous.  They took half of the thyroid and told her on the day of the surgery that there was no cancer.  She had her post surgery check-up yesterday and they informed her that after further pathology they did find cancerous cells and now need to go back and take the entire thyroid.  They said that the cancer is 100% curable.  Thanks be to God.    She hasn't been able to sleep or eat much.  They are trying to regulate her medication to get her thyroid hormone levels back to normal and it's taking a toll on her.  Please keep her in your prayers.

Have a peace filled day in Jesus.

St. John's Group Email Community Wide Garage Sale Sat. July 30, 2011 in Warrenton

Greetings from your St. John's Board of Outreach!!

As you all may know, Sat. July 30th is our Warrenton Community Garage Sale.  This is a great time to get rid of those "extra" items in your home and make a few $$.  Also, it helps "shoppers" save $$$!!

We have listed some Garage Sale Tips below for you.

Also, think about advertising that you are going to donate a percentage (your choice how much - OR ALL !) of your proceeds of the garage sale to:  Concordia Seminary (see our stewardship designation for July), Agape, our C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry to help feed the homeless (watch for upcoming opportunities for this!), our Little Lambs Pre-School, God Cares Ministry in Warren County (contact: Kia Phillips) our ST. John's Youth Group, to name just a few.  This would certainly up your "customers and sales" and help so many folks and ministries in our community and our church.

Just a thought as you look around and think about how close you might be to being on the next segment of "America's Messiest House" or that show about "Hoarders"!!  I know I have!  LOL.

God bless your summer as you serve His people in so many ways.  And...always look around you - the Holy Spirit will help you SEE opportunities!

Sandy Robine, Molly Hendershot and Patty Sweet

Board of Outreach & Evangelism

Garage Sale Tips

BEFORE:

Choose a good moneymaking day, such as a Saturday near the first or 15th of the month (typical

paydays).

Organize your event as a multi-family sale. Lots of garage sales in the same area will create more of a

bazaar-type atmosphere.

Signage is everything! The day before the sale, post signs near all the major streets and intersections, in

every direction, to direct people to your address. Use big, posterboard signs securely duct-taped to poles or

mounted in grass islands, with lettering at least 6 inches tall. Add arrows to point turn directions.

Hang flyers with tear-off info in public spaces like your church or grocery store. Tip: Before posting,

consult area rules and ordinances.

Often local newspapers and radio stations announce info for free, as does craigslist.org. *Include the date,

time, address, directions, and items of interest.

Clean items up. Just as used car dealers spray "new car smell" into their vehicles and shine the exteriors

to make them more appealing. On the flip side: The more haggard-looking stuff you put out, the more

quickly browsers will get turned off. (No clothes with telltale stains)

Display everything neatly. Take time to lay out your sale items in an inviting manner, as they might

appear in a store; books that are stacked and organized are easier to browse and will sell quicker than those

thrown in a cardboard box marked "BOOKS: 50 CENTS."

Get change - at least $40 in bills and coin change. (You don't want to blow a sale because you can't make

change.)

Make additional signs to point out particular bargain items in your garage.

Make your sale like a shopping experience, and you'll have a much better chance of succeeding.

DURING:

Greet people warmly and don't hover. Make people feel welcome, and once you have someone in your

garage or yard, don't stalk them in hopes of a sale. Let them browse at their own pace and offer to answer

any questions they may have.

Price items clearly. If you have time, you really should label everything so that people know what they

cost. (Some people will be too shy to ask otherwise.) If you don't label everything, make sure to tell people

that items are priced to sell!

Let people haggle. Take it from a veteran garage-sale shopper: People feel really good when they can get

an item at a discounted price. If you're really firm on getting a set higher price on an item, like a family

heirloom or stereo system, perhaps you should sell it on eBay instead. Most people will perceive a garage

sale as your attempt to empty your house of stuff. Their price expectations will adjust accordingly.

St. John's Group Email June 29, 2011

DEVOTION:  "He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls."  Proverbs 25:28

In one of his best known poems Rudyard Kipling contends that the test of manhood is : "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you."  There is much truth to this statement.

To lose your head is to court defeat and disaster, whether in an athletic contest, in a debate, with those with whom you may disagree, or even on the battlefield .  Lack of self control is a sign of either moral or emotional weakness, or both.  To break down under pressure indicates an instability and immaturity that may well be a "fatal flaw."

Often people excuse themsevles for "flying of the handle," for an angry word, or a profane outburst.  They were under a special strain, they say, or they were driven beyond the limits of patience, or they gave vent to a sudden reaction of pain or dismay.  This, they feel, should mitigate their guilt.  "That's the way Iam," they explain, perhaps with a twinge of embarassment.

But that is precisely the way we should NOT be.  The Christian should cultivate the spirit of self control, which St. Paul list in his category of fruits of the Spirit.  The test of character does not occur when everything is smooth and normal, it comes just when the situation is tense, when problems mount, and when our endurance is taxed to the utmost.  Times like these prove whether or not we can "keep our head".

"Control yourself," is good psychology.  It is good social behavior.  It is emotional maturity.  But most important, it is good Christianity.

And when we fail at self control, we should be able to practice freely and openly the showing of humility and repentance so that we may be built up in the Lord and grow in our ability to control ourselves, especially our tongues.

Prayer:  Lord God help me to continually cultivate my fruit of self control that I may show You more and more in my life, words, and actions, and when I fail help me to show true humility and repentance so that people may see that I make no excuse for my wrong actions, but only acknowledge Your forgiveness.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Ecclesiastes 3:1  "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven....."

Hi everyone!  As you can see, I am back from vacation.

On vacation, mostly as I was driving, there was a lot of time for reflection.  Not sure how many of you are aware of it, but this weekend is the ten year anniversary of my ordination and installation at St. John's.

Throughout those ten years there have been many "seasons" and "times" in the life of the church and in my life as well, both good times and challenging times, peaceful times, and times of turmoil and distress.  I have seen my daughter grow up into the beautiful girl she is and have seen the birth of my son and the growth process he has taken.  I have seen many f the children of this congregation grow up from youngsters into adults with jobs and families of their own.  I have seen many new and returning Christians become members of this church and grow in their faiths.  I have had the privilege to assist our Lord and Savior in the bringing of many a Christian into the fold through the waters of holy baptism as well as rejoice with many mourners as many of our faithful witnesses go on to the church triumphant.

Throughout that time I have grown as a person and as a pastor, mostly through trial and error, through the many "seasons" of my time here.  That is what these "seasons" are about.  They are about growing.  They are about being transformed in the renewing of our minds, hearts, and lives to be about the work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Many of you are struggling with all sorts of trials and errors right now as well, whether it be health issues, relationship issues, financial issues, etc.  You may be going through some tough times right now.  Others of you may be having the time of your life and everything is going well for you.  Whatever the case you can know this one thing.  GOD IS WITH YOU!!

It is a very obvious thing, isn't it, but how many times a day do we forget about God's presence in our lives?  How many times a day do we sin because we have forgotten His presence?  How many times have we been frustrated or ready to throw in the towel because we forget about God's powerful presence?

That's what Satan wants.  He wants you to forget about God's presence with you.  He wants you to get sp discouraged that you just give up. that way he can get you away from the Savior's love, forgiveness, and life.

Don't let him.  Make use of God's means of grace, His WORD and SACRAMENTS, as often as you are able.  Be IN God's Word.  Eat His body and drink His blood.  Remember your baptism!  Be IN worship!  Do all this, not out of drudgery or a sense of responsibility, but out of a need to realize God's presence more and more!

I thank you for the wonderful ten years I have had here at St. John's.  To be honest, I don't really know what God has in store for me for the future.  But I do know that whever I am and whatever I am doing He will never leave me nor forsake me and He will be with me to the end of the age!  The same holds true for you!

PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL!

Prayer:  Lord God our heavenly Father, help us to know, with more assurance daily, that You are with us, You are on our side, and You will be our shield, our protector, and our guide for all eternity!  Amen.
