God's peace on your afternoon and evening!
St. John's Group Email June 28, 2011
Hi everyone! As you can see, I am back from vacation.
On vacation, mostly as I was driving, there was a lot of time for reflection. Not sure how many of you are aware of it, but this weekend is the ten year anniversary of my ordination and installation at St. John's.
Throughout those ten years there have been many "seasons" and "times" in the life of the church and in my life as well, both good times and challenging times, peaceful times, and times of turmoil and distress. I have seen my daughter grow up into the beautiful girl she is and have seen the birth of my son and the growth process he has taken. I have seen many f the children of this congregation grow up from youngsters into adults with jobs and families of their own. I have seen many new and returning Christians become members of this church and grow in their faiths. I have had the privilege to assist our Lord and Savior in the bringing of many a Christian into the fold through the waters of holy baptism as well as rejoice with many mourners as many of our faithful witnesses go on to the church triumphant.
Throughout that time I have grown as a person and as a pastor, mostly through trial and error, through the many "seasons" of my time here. That is what these "seasons" are about. They are about growing. They are about being transformed in the renewing of our minds, hearts, and lives to be about the work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Many of you are struggling with all sorts of trials and errors right now as well, whether it be health issues, relationship issues, financial issues, etc. You may be going through some tough times right now. Others of you may be having the time of your life and everything is going well for you. Whatever the case you can know this one thing. GOD IS WITH YOU!!
It is a very obvious thing, isn't it, but how many times a day do we forget about God's presence in our lives? How many times a day do we sin because we have forgotten His presence? How many times have we been frustrated or ready to throw in the towel because we forget about God's powerful presence?
That's what Satan wants. He wants you to forget about God's presence with you. He wants you to get sp discouraged that you just give up. that way he can get you away from the Savior's love, forgiveness, and life.
Don't let him. Make use of God's means of grace, His WORD and SACRAMENTS, as often as you are able. Be IN God's Word. Eat His body and drink His blood. Remember your baptism! Be IN worship! Do all this, not out of drudgery or a sense of responsibility, but out of a need to realize God's presence more and more!
I thank you for the wonderful ten years I have had here at St. John's. To be honest, I don't really know what God has in store for me for the future. But I do know that whever I am and whatever I am doing He will never leave me nor forsake me and He will be with me to the end of the age! The same holds true for you!
PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL!
Prayer: Lord God our heavenly Father, help us to know, with more assurance daily, that You are with us, You are on our side, and You will be our shield, our protector, and our guide for all eternity! Amen.

| If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9 While looking for stories for the Daily Devotions, my eye was caught by the title of an article located on another web page. The title said, "Man Dies All By Himself." Was the story about a forgotten movie star, or some homeless individual, or a hiker who had taken a climb beyond his level of expertise? Maybe this was the story of a hoarder who had been crushed by a falling pile of beloved possessions. It was the kind of title I had to investigate. Clicking on the link produced a large picture of a hollow-cheeked old man. Above his head, in very large letters were the words "Man Dies All By Himself." There was no article, nothing to explain the picture. Then it clicked. The man who had died all by himself was Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the man who had helped terminate the lives of over 130 people -- people who had incurable and painful diseases, who had no hope, no value, nothing to keep them linked to this world. At least that's what Kevorkian said. It's what many others believe. Recently, a past executive director of Lutheran Hour Ministries went home to his Lord. Rodger Hebermehl was his name. Many of you knew him. Those who didn't missed the acquaintance of a special man, a gentle, Christian man, who loved his Lord and had a tremendous longing for the lost souls of humanity. Over the last few years Rodger had suffered from an illness that he knew would end his life. Gradually the things he could do were diminished. Did Rodger say there was no hope, that he had no value or purpose, nothing to keep him here? If you think that, you don't know Rodger. Allow me to share that when Rodger no longer could get around by himself, when limitations were many and opportunities few, he prayed he might share the Savior's story with a few more unbelievers. He prayed he might be used by the Lord to let them know the transforming power of the Christ. He prayed the Holy Spirit might use him to bring a dozen people to faith. May I tell you one other thing about Rodger? Rodger did not die all by himself. Yes, he had his loving wife Cassandra at his side and, yes, there had been many others with him during those last days. But when Rodger left this life he did so in the company of Jesus who had redeemed him -- the Savior he had considered it an honor to serve. No, Rodger did not die alone. Because of Jesus, no Christian man or woman ever dies ... alone. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks for the Rodger Hebermehls of this world. By that I mean those who have clearly seen the Savior's sacrifice and wish to do all they can to make sure the whole world knows the wonders of Your love. May I, by Your grace, live in that love until the time comes when I am taken home. This I ask in the Name of Jesus. Amen. POSTSCRIPT: I don't know if Rodger's wish to touch people with the Savior's story reached everyone he wished when he was alive. But I think both the Lord and Rodger would be pleased if you shared this devotion with others who haven't yet acknowledged Jesus as Savior. Thank you. |

St. John's Group Email Friday, June 10, 2011
As many of you know, I spent Tuesday and Wednesday down in Joplin helping a little bit with the recovery efforts with the tornado. Tuesday we spent part of the afternoon carrying hundreds of cases of bottled water into Immanuel's school gym and the rest of the afternoon at a couple different houses carrying all the trash, trees, and building materials to the curb to be picked up. Wednesday was spent helping a family move their belongings from their destroyed home and a storage unit to their new place.
It was hard work and the folks there have tons more hard work ahead of them for weeks and months to come. You would think that there would be a lot of crushed spirits and downtrodden faces and lives in that city.
You would be wrong. What I found, especially among the many Christian people I worked for and with, was a sense of joy and peace. I saw smiles on many faces and eagerness to serve and pitch in wherever needed. I saw a lot of overly joyful and thankful people for the thousands of volunteers that were down there serving. No one really complained about the work they had to do. They may have been overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, but neither discouraged nor willing to give up. I was reminded of the old wise saying, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
All of this kind of reminded me of the Christian life in general. Every Christian who lives for any amount of time on this earth will go through tragedy. Some will go through more than others, while still others will go through harsher tragedy at times. But what I am reminded of is what Paul says in Romans and what the above passage from Proverbs says. We have joy in our sufferings because suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope which never disappoints us.
When we go through tragedies like the ones in Joplin or in our own personal lives, it is for the production of the hope that does nto disappoint us. It is to remind us that life on this earth is fragile and temporary and that eternal life is what it is all about. It is to remind us that we can only find true comfort, hope, and joy in Jesus and never in the things of this world. A joyful heart truly is good medicine because it is a byproduct of God's love and peace in us.
Please continue to pray for the folks in Joplin as they recover from this tragedy that they will continue to have joy in their suffering and patient endurance as God continues to help them and us through life's journey.
Prayer: Lord God, bless us all when we go through times of struggle and tragedy to remind us that we don't have everything under control, neither do we trust in our own abilities, but that you havve bought us with Your own precious blood and our life truly belongs to You. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Make A Difference in Joplin - One Family, One Person at a Time
I am back from Joplin. All I can say is that they will be needing help for a very long time. Below is a fantastic way that you can help!
Come to church this weekend to find out more about the work Danny Dreyer and I did and how we can be most helpful as a congregation!

St. John's Group Email Church Float trip
Church Camping/Float Trip
Dates July 22 - 24th
We have four campsites reserved at Onondaga Cave State Park for the night of the 22nd and 23rd. These are full hookup sites. Each site can accommodate up to 6 people and 2 sleeping units (one with wheels). Cost of camping for 2 days is $54.50 per site. If you do not camp but would like to join the fun a variety of overnight options are availabe at Ozark Outdoors which is about 2 miles away. www.ozarkoutdoors.net or 800-888-0023
The majority of Saturday will be "on your own". There are a variety of things to do at Onondoga State park. www.mostatparks.com or 573-245-6576 There is a beach on the river, a playground and trails (bring Off if you're choosing this option). There are also cave tours available. Onondaga Cave rates are $12 adult, $7 child, $10 senior. Cathedral Cave tours are $8 for adults and $6 for children. We will have a group meal on Saturday night. Meat will be provided. Please bring a dish to share. We will also have a worship service on Saturday night.
We are planning to float on Sunday leaving from Ozark Outdoors at 10:00. We will do a 5 mile float. This should take around 3-5 hours. This would allow time for anyone who wants to drive down Sunday morning to do so. (Leaving church at 8:00) Cost to float on Sunday is $17.50 per person with 2 people in a canoe. A child 12 or under can ride free in a canoe with 2 people. A raft is $22 per person on Sunday with children 7 & under free. Tubes are $20 per person. If anyone has their own canoes we can work out shuttling arrangements. (A Saturday float could also be arranged if someone wanted to float both days. Canoes are $23 on Saturday. Rafts are $33 on Saturday.)
Please contact Teresa Scott with any questions or to make your reservations. Camping reservations need to be made with Teresa by July 10th but sooner is better. Canoe/Raft reservations need to be made by July 17th but sooner is better. tscott@usmo.com or 636-359-0274 (call or text)
Please feel free to join us all weekend or for any portion of the weekend.
