DEVOTION:
If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9

While looking for stories for the Daily Devotions, my eye was caught by the title of an article located on another web page.

The title said, "Man Dies All By Himself."

Was the story about a forgotten movie star, or some homeless individual, or a hiker who had taken a climb beyond his level of expertise? Maybe this was the story of a hoarder who had been crushed by a falling pile of beloved possessions. It was the kind of title I had to investigate.

Clicking on the link produced a large picture of a hollow-cheeked old man. Above his head, in very large letters were the words "Man Dies All By Himself." There was no article, nothing to explain the picture.

Then it clicked. The man who had died all by himself was Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the man who had helped terminate the lives of over 130 people -- people who had incurable and painful diseases, who had no hope, no value, nothing to keep them linked to this world.

At least that's what Kevorkian said. It's what many others believe.

Recently, a past executive director of Lutheran Hour Ministries went home to his Lord. Rodger Hebermehl was his name. Many of you knew him. Those who didn't missed the acquaintance of a special man, a gentle, Christian man, who loved his Lord and had a tremendous longing for the lost souls of humanity.

Over the last few years Rodger had suffered from an illness that he knew would end his life. Gradually the things he could do were diminished. Did Rodger say there was no hope, that he had no value or purpose, nothing to keep him here?

If you think that, you don't know Rodger. Allow me to share that when Rodger no longer could get around by himself, when limitations were many and opportunities few, he prayed he might share the Savior's story with a few more unbelievers. He prayed he might be used by the Lord to let them know the transforming power of the Christ. He prayed the Holy Spirit might use him to bring a dozen people to faith.

May I tell you one other thing about Rodger? Rodger did not die all by himself. Yes, he had his loving wife Cassandra at his side and, yes, there had been many others with him during those last days.

But when Rodger left this life he did so in the company of Jesus who had redeemed him -- the Savior he had considered it an honor to serve. No, Rodger did not die alone.

Because of Jesus, no Christian man or woman ever dies ... alone.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks for the Rodger Hebermehls of this world. By that I mean those who have clearly seen the Savior's sacrifice and wish to do all they can to make sure the whole world knows the wonders of Your love. May I, by Your grace, live in that love until the time comes when I am taken home. This I ask in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

POSTSCRIPT: I don't know if Rodger's wish to touch people with the Savior's story reached everyone he wished when he was alive. But I think both the Lord and Rodger would be pleased if you shared this devotion with others who haven't yet acknowledged Jesus as Savior. Thank you.

St. John's Group Email one more prayer request

Please pray for Hope Tinnin's mother as doctors have found several tumors on her lungs.

St. John's Group Email prayer for the family and friends of Norbert Heitgerd and also for Bob Linke

1.  Norbert Heitgerd passed away this morning after a battle with cancer.  Please pray for his family and friends as they mourn his passing.  Visitation and funeral arrangements are pending.

2.  Pray for Bob Linke who is hospitalized with severe intestinal problem.

St. John's Group Email prayer requests

I have run out of time to do a daily email for today, but I wanted to get these prayer requests out:

1.  For NORBERT HEITGERD who is on hospice and nearing the end of his days on the earth unless the Lord does a miracle.

2. For RUTH CANTRELL  (her update is below)
To All Ruth's Friends and Family

We went to see Dr. John Bedwinek Friday at the SLU Cyberknife (directional radiation) program at Lake St. Louis.   They had been reviewing the biopsy report, it was strange looking and was even presented to the greater St. Louis Tumor Review Group.  They could not tell what type of cells these were only that they did not like them, they are cancer cells just don't know what type.  They have to determine the type before treatment,  The have sent these cells to a prominent pathologist along with some of her old lung tissue for comparison.  We would prefer that it be some type of pituitary cancer and not a spread of the lung cancer.  We have to wait until the staples are removed prior to starting the Cyberknife treatment.   That will be 20 Jun 2011, we will then be able to get her mask made for the treatment on the 20 or 21 Jun and treatment started soon thereafter.

Keep Ruth in your thoughts and Prayers as she goes through this treatment.

3. For GUS KLAUSTERMEIER as he has a fever and is feeling really sick today.

These two are the most urgent prayers.

Peace be with you today!

DEVOTION:  A joyful heart is good medicine but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.  Proverbs 17:22

As many of you know, I spent Tuesday and Wednesday down in Joplin helping a little bit with the recovery efforts with the tornado.  Tuesday we spent part of the afternoon carrying hundreds of cases of bottled water into Immanuel's school gym and the rest of the afternoon at a couple different houses carrying all the trash, trees, and building materials to the curb to be picked up.  Wednesday was spent helping a family move their belongings from their destroyed home and a storage unit to their new place.

It was hard work and the folks there have tons more hard work ahead of them for weeks and months to come.  You would think that there would be a lot of crushed spirits and downtrodden faces and lives in that city.

You would be wrong.  What I found, especially among the many Christian people I worked for and with, was a sense of joy and peace.  I saw smiles on many faces and eagerness to serve and pitch in wherever needed.  I saw a lot of overly joyful and thankful people for the thousands of volunteers that were down there serving.  No one really complained about the work they had to do.  They may have been overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, but neither discouraged nor willing to give up.  I was reminded of the old wise saying, "How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time."

All of this kind of reminded me of the Christian life in general.  Every Christian who lives for any amount of time on this earth will go through tragedy.  Some will go through more than others, while still others will go through harsher tragedy at times.  But what I am reminded of is what Paul says in Romans and what the above passage from Proverbs says.  We have joy in our sufferings because suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope which never disappoints us.

When we go through tragedies like the ones in Joplin or in our own personal lives, it is for the production of the hope that does nto disappoint us.  It is to remind us that life on this earth is fragile and temporary and that eternal life is what it is all about.  It is to remind us that we can only find true comfort, hope, and joy in Jesus and never in the things of this world.  A joyful heart truly is good medicine because it is a byproduct of God's love and peace in us.

Please continue to pray for the folks in Joplin as they recover from this tragedy that they will continue to have joy in their suffering and patient endurance as God continues to help them and us through life's journey.

Prayer:  Lord God, bless us all when we go through times of struggle and tragedy to remind us that we don't have everything under control, neither do we trust in our own abilities, but that you havve bought us with Your own precious blood and our life truly belongs to You.  Amen.

St. John's Group Email FW: Prayer Request from Sandy Robine

Below is from Sandy

My very first friend in this world, Anna Schmaltz Zyntniak has 2 beautiful granddaughters.  The oldest one, Anna has had some heart problems since infantcy.  She is scheduled now for a heart surgery on July 7th. I have attached a picture of her taken last month when she went from Daisy to Brownie!  She is in the pink slacks.  Also below, if you scroll down, you will see the email from my friend (her grandma) asking for prayers.  Also below that is the email from little Anna's parents requesting prayers for Anna and also a great Christian witness on their part.  My friend's daughter, Kim is an educator in the Lindbergh School District.  Anna (the grandma) and I became friends when she was born and I was 3 years old and we were neighbors.  Also our families owned businesses next door to each other in Affton.  Just wanted to give you all a little background, and hopefully the picture will print for you, so you can know a bit more about the dear and beautiful little girl for whom you will be praying the next month or so.

A little sidenote.  Talk about a small world.  Cheryl Tate's grandparents lived on our street too!  And, it turns out that those 2 little girls that used to visit there sometimes that Anna and I played with were, in fact, Cheryl Tate and her sister!!!!  Who knew!

Thank you on behalf of a wonderful Christian family of friends of ours.  BTW, grandma Anna has MS also.  She is doing pretty well; but one never knows.  She also just had a lump removed from her breast.  The doctor thought it looked like it would be benign but we will find out this week sometime for sure.  While you're at it, please keep Grandma Ann in your prayers as well.

God's peace on your day.

Sandy Robine

Dear Jeremy,

You are my refuge in the day of disaster. Jeremiah 17:17

OlympiaMartin Luther School (Immanuel Joplin's day school) and Immanuel Lutheran Church are the epicenter of aid for the people of Joplin. There they host hot meals for lunch and dinner, distribute clothing, toiletries, household goods, food, diapers and run a medical clinic. The generosity of Lutheran churches and individuals has been overwhelming with donations pouring in from all over the country. At this point in the restoration process the staff and volunteers at Immanuel are saying their biggest need is for gift cards in any denomination.

A way to provide these gift cards and help Martin Luther School, which has given up its entire facility to house all these wonderful efforts, is to purchase the gift cards through the school's Scrip Program. The Scrip Program DOES NOT CHARGE a fee for the purchase of a card. If you would like to make a donation toward the work being done at Immanuel, one family at a time, please consider purchasing a card through this program. The stores that the gift cards will be purchased for are: Home Depot, Lowes, Target and Walmart/Sam's.

Donations going out of Immanuel JoplinClick on the link below to donate online for the purchase of a card or send a check to LCC and mark it "Care Carding". Immanuel Joplin has asked Lutheran Church Charities to acknowledge all the gifts as they simply do not have the time, staff, or resources to do this. LCC will then place orders through the Scrip Coordinator at Martin Luther School. The card is issued for the full amount you order. In addition, a percentage of that amount is paid to the school through the Scrip Program. Of course your donation is passed through LCC - dollar for dollar. Your gift provides a tangible way to demonstrate the Mercy and Compassion of Christ to people in need in Joplin and helps the folks at Martin Luther School with funds to help repair the damage done to their facility from the tornado and put their facility back in shape for the coming school year.

Thank you for considering making a gift in this way and in Making A Difference.

St. John's Group Email Urgent need and Arranging Work Crews for Joplin

If you are a doctor or nurse or know of any doctors or nurses who have a bit of extra time and want to volunteer, here is the perfect opportunity:

Urgent Appeal – Immanuel Joplin Calling for Doctors and Nurses

Immanuel Lutheran in Joplin is doing incredible work serving their members, neighbors and the entire city. They are providing food, water, clothing and medical care. The medical clinic being run out of their school building is dependent on volunteer doctors and nurses.

Pastor Gregory Mech and the leadership at Immanuel have asked us to put out this appeal asking doctors and nurses to consider coming to Joplin and serving in the clinic.  Any doctors and nurses able to donate even a day or two of their time would play a crucial role in keeping the medical clinic open and available to the community.

The clinic is administering tetanus shots, doing wound care and addressing respiratory distress caused by the massive amounts of airborne debris from the rubble, among other things.

If you are a medical professional and can donate some of your time to help Immanuel please click here and register as a volunteer for Joplin.  Note specifically that you are a doctor or nurse so that we can assign you to work in the clinic.

Thank you for considering this request to share the mercy and compassion of Christ with the people of Joplin.

St. John's Group Email update on Robyn McNew's brother Ken Meyer

What a miracle!!!

Ken is now at St. John's Mercy Rehab Hospital at Hwy 40 and Timberlake Manor Pkwy (this is not part of the main hospital at 270 and 40).

He has a rigorous therapy schedule during the day (Mon-Sat) with Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy. He is doing wonderfully! Still a little confused, some vision problems, working on dexterity in hands and standing/walking, but when you talk to him, you can hardly believe he is where he is today after everything that's happened.

St. John's Group Email FW: House For Sale

From your St. John's Board of Evangelism & Outreach!!!

While most of you have no trouble sharing your faith in Jesus Christ with others, many of you still are not comfortable doing so.  Well...here is a really "easy" way to do that for you ALL - BOLD OR MEEK!  This week-end is a great opportunity to learn more about sharing your faith.  Come meet and "join" the Ongoing Ambassdors For Christ (OAFC) that will be with us at St. John's.  Even 30 minutes of your entire week-end with one of these awesome young folks will change your life.

Today is another opportunity to share your faith in Christ with others.  Who you talk to about Him TODAY may be the last time the other person has to know Christ as their savior.  Or...TODAY may be the last time YOU have to tell someone about Him before you meet Him face to face!

I'm sure there must have been some kind of closing prayer or benediction of some sort at the high school graduation in Joplin last week.  And, before many of those in attendance (graduates and/or family and friends) ever got back to their earthly homes, they went "home" to the Lord.

MAKE TODAY COUNT & God's peace to you as you live for Him!
Matthew 28:18-20    -    Ecclesiates 9:12

St. John's Group Email volunteer for Joplin relief

I would like to take a group down to Joplin Mon, June 6-Wed, June 8 or the following week Tues , June 14-Thurs, June 16.

Let me know ASAP so I can get us registered and make further plans for sleeping and food arrangements.  We would be working through Immanuel Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Charities.

Just so you know, it may not work out that we are able to go this soon, as just about every organization is inundated with volunteers, but there will still be a lot of need in July as well.

God's peace on your day!

DEVOTION:
But He (Jesus) said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

No doubt you've heard that old expression: "If life gives you lemons, the best thing a person can do is make lemonade."

That's just another way of saying, "Do the best you can with what you've got." It's good advice, but most of us don't follow those words.

In contrast to most people, there is a resident in the New York State prison system.

They haven't released the prisoner's name or the reason he was initially placed in jail. On the other hand, we do know he is an expert on making lemonade.

We know that because the inmate has been caught collecting unemployment checks. That's right. While he was in prison he applied for unemployment. Because of some assistance he received from a woman who works for the state parks department, and because of some creative lying (he told them he was looking for work), the man's application was processed, approved and he began getting his unemployment wages.

Now while we most certainly do not approve of what the prisoner did, we do have to acknowledge he didn't throw in the towel, and he didn't stop believing in what could be accomplished.

His example can be a lesson for us believers.

You see, all too often we give up when we're faced with a bad or difficult situation. We throw in the towel and refuse to make the attempt to fix things.

That's unfortunate. There are times when the Lord wants us to keep counting on Him, when He wants us to keep on praying, working, striving, doing what we can where we can with whatever means He has placed at our disposal.

That's what Noah did, what Moses did, what Samson and Joseph did and what God instructed Paul to do in our Bible verse for today's devotion.

Now I don't have time to give you a complete list of heroes who, with God's guidance, made lemonade out of lemons. But I do have space to say, please, trust that the Lord is with you, helping, assisting, encouraging -- even when life gives you lemons.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the life of a Christian isn't always easy. There are times when we all get lemons. At such moments be with us and grant us the ability to make lemonade. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question: Why are all six chief parts of the Small Catechism taken from the Bible alone?
Answer:  All the chief parts of the Small Catechism are taken from the Bible, because as god's written Word the Bible is the only final authority for Christian faith and life.  "We pledge ourselves to the prophetic and apostolic writings of the Old and New Testaments as the pure and clear fountain of Israel, which is the only true norm according to which all teachers and teachings are to be judged and evaluated.... We have a single, universally accepted.... form of doctrine,,,,, from which and according to which, because it is drawn from the Word of God, all other writings are to be approved and accepted, judged, and regulated"  (Formula of Concord SD Rule and Norm 3, 10)
