St. John's Group Email Urgent need and Arranging Work Crews for Joplin
Urgent Appeal – Immanuel Joplin Calling for Doctors and Nurses
Immanuel Lutheran in Joplin is doing incredible work serving their members, neighbors and the entire city. They are providing food, water, clothing and medical care. The medical clinic being run out of their school building is dependent on volunteer doctors and nurses.
Pastor Gregory Mech and the leadership at Immanuel have asked us to put out this appeal asking doctors and nurses to consider coming to Joplin and serving in the clinic. Any doctors and nurses able to donate even a day or two of their time would play a crucial role in keeping the medical clinic open and available to the community.
The clinic is administering tetanus shots, doing wound care and addressing respiratory distress caused by the massive amounts of airborne debris from the rubble, among other things.
If you are a medical professional and can donate some of your time to help Immanuel please click here and register as a volunteer for Joplin. Note specifically that you are a doctor or nurse so that we can assign you to work in the clinic.
Thank you for considering this request to share the mercy and compassion of Christ with the people of Joplin.

I will be working with Immanuel Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Charities down there. Not sure yet what we will be doing, but in the words of the coordinator, "There is plenty of work to go around."

St. John's Group Email update on Robyn McNew's brother Ken Meyer
Ken is now at St. John's Mercy Rehab Hospital at Hwy 40 and Timberlake Manor Pkwy (this is not part of the main hospital at 270 and 40).
He has a rigorous therapy schedule during the day (Mon-Sat) with Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy. He is doing wonderfully! Still a little confused, some vision problems, working on dexterity in hands and standing/walking, but when you talk to him, you can hardly believe he is where he is today after everything that's happened.

Let me know ASAP so I can get us registered and make further plans for sleeping and food arrangements. We would be working through Immanuel Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Charities.
Just so you know, it may not work out that we are able to go this soon, as just about every organization is inundated with volunteers, but there will still be a lot of need in July as well.
God's peace on your day!

St. John's Group Email Wednesday, June 1, 2011
| But He (Jesus) said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 No doubt you've heard that old expression: "If life gives you lemons, the best thing a person can do is make lemonade." That's just another way of saying, "Do the best you can with what you've got." It's good advice, but most of us don't follow those words. In contrast to most people, there is a resident in the New York State prison system. They haven't released the prisoner's name or the reason he was initially placed in jail. On the other hand, we do know he is an expert on making lemonade. We know that because the inmate has been caught collecting unemployment checks. That's right. While he was in prison he applied for unemployment. Because of some assistance he received from a woman who works for the state parks department, and because of some creative lying (he told them he was looking for work), the man's application was processed, approved and he began getting his unemployment wages. Now while we most certainly do not approve of what the prisoner did, we do have to acknowledge he didn't throw in the towel, and he didn't stop believing in what could be accomplished. His example can be a lesson for us believers. You see, all too often we give up when we're faced with a bad or difficult situation. We throw in the towel and refuse to make the attempt to fix things. That's unfortunate. There are times when the Lord wants us to keep counting on Him, when He wants us to keep on praying, working, striving, doing what we can where we can with whatever means He has placed at our disposal. That's what Noah did, what Moses did, what Samson and Joseph did and what God instructed Paul to do in our Bible verse for today's devotion. Now I don't have time to give you a complete list of heroes who, with God's guidance, made lemonade out of lemons. But I do have space to say, please, trust that the Lord is with you, helping, assisting, encouraging -- even when life gives you lemons. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the life of a Christian isn't always easy. There are times when we all get lemons. At such moments be with us and grant us the ability to make lemonade. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen. |

CATECHISM:
Question: Why are all six chief parts of the Small Catechism taken from the Bible alone?
Answer: All the chief parts of the Small Catechism are taken from the Bible, because as god's written Word the Bible is the only final authority for Christian faith and life. "We pledge ourselves to the prophetic and apostolic writings of the Old and New Testaments as the pure and clear fountain of Israel, which is the only true norm according to which all teachers and teachings are to be judged and evaluated.... We have a single, universally accepted.... form of doctrine,,,,, from which and according to which, because it is drawn from the Word of God, all other writings are to be approved and accepted, judged, and regulated" (Formula of Concord SD Rule and Norm 3, 10)

DEVOTION: There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven...... Ecclesiastes 3:1-17
This is a very familiar verse and passage of Scripture. Have you ever thought about what it means for you? It means that there is a time for many good things to happen and a time for quite a few bad things to happen as well. The good news is that God works His will through them both.
There is a time for strife and a time for healing, a time to live in plenty and a time to be in need. A time to help and a time to be helped. A time to talk and a time to keep your mouth shut. I could go on and on. How do you see God's hand in all of these times and circumstances?
This time in our church's history is a time of reflection and restoration, a time to look back at where we have been and a time to think about, plan, and prepare for where we want to go. All of this is guided by God's hand. "God works all things out for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose."
We need to be looking toward God and His purpose in the things taking place this week and in the weeks ahead. He will have His will to be done in and through us! How exciting is that? He has big things planned for us!
In this time we don't stop doing God's work. In fact, He may even ramp it up a bit in our lives. This week and next we have many things going on. Below is a list of the main things:
1. OAFC: If you don't know what it is by now, you need to learn about it. Go to OAFC.org to learn more about it. A brief synopsis is that it is a group of high school age kids and their adult leaders who go to a different LCMS church once a month and do Bible study, evangelism and outreach in, for, and with the congregation. The big parts are Bible study Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday night, door todoor canvassing Sat morning and afternoon, a program at a local nursing or retirement home, and leading of worship Sat and Sun. Many have volunteered to house and feed these wonderful folks this weekend. What we really want now is people, both teens and adults, who will take some time out to participate in their activities. Please call me and let me know if you can be there.
2. LUAU: The Schirrs have opened their beautiful home to us Saturday night to have a good time of relaxation, fellowship, and good fun. Thank you Schirrs! Please call them TODAY if you haven't signed up yet! This is an adults only party so kids need to stay home.
3. A NEW BIBLE STUDY ON PROVERBS: It has been a while since we have started a new Bible study. If you haven't been to Bible study for a while or have never attended, this Sunday is a perfect time to start. Proverbs is full of God's wisdom! If you want to know how to live your life in a more God pleasing way, this is the Bible study to be at!
4. JOPLIN RELIEF: Hopefully by next week I will have a plan to take a group of folks down to Joplin to help with the relief efforts for a few days. Please stay tuned, especially if you want to go.
Prayer: Lord God, as we reflect and move forward, herlp us also to continue to do your work in every part of our lives! Help us to realize that there is a time for everything under heaven, but that your work is always going on! Amen.

Sister Congregations.....We are overwhelmed by your offers of support and labor! We are hoping to have internet restored Tuesday so that we can begin to respond to your offers to come and help. We will be in contact as soon as possible. We need your help and support, but please give us time to respond. God Bless you all!
Special thanks to Shawn and Jennifer who are maintaining our website and responding to emails on our behalf from St. Louis. Without them, we would not be able to communicate with our sister churches.
PLEASE COME TO CHURCH TO help organize donations, preparing meals, distribute water. Need places for people to stay, store possessions, transportation, house pets. Volunteers check in with Amanda Moenning or Kim Davis upon arrival. They will put you to work.
Go to lcms.org/worldrelief or mail a check to LCMS World Relief and Human Care PO Box 66861 St Louis, MO 63166-6861 (write "Tornado Relief" in the memo line.)
