By now many of you have some information regarding the devastating tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., Sunday evening. The reports I have received indicate that up to 75% of the city of 50,000 has sustained some damage with much of the damage catastrophic. As of 7:00 a.m. Monday, the media was reporting 89 confirmed deaths and it is anticipated that that number will increase as search and rescue efforts continue.

Immanuel Lutheran Church is the only LCMS congregation in Joplin. The principal, Jeremy Schamber, reports that the school is damaged and at this time is unsafe to enter. It appears that the church did not sustain significant damage. The parsonage received structural damage including the loss of its roof.

The pastor of Immanuel, Rev. Gregory Mech, and his wife are uninjured. Likewise, the principal of the school and the DCE are both safe. Jason Glaskey, DCE, just sent a message via Facebook that all of Immanuel's staff are now safe and accounted for. The homes of three of the Christian Day School teachers were destroyed. The brother of one of the teachers was killed.

Only approved emergency responders are permitted to enter Joplin. We have no information regarding specific needs and ask that all desiring to provide assistance please wait for a list of needs to be published. We will provide a list once that it has been developed. In the meantime, even for those with insurance, there will be immediate need for cash assistance. You can send cash assistance to:

We give thanks and praise to God for the countless lives that were spared. We pray God's comfort and blessings upon all of the families that mourn the death of loved ones. We ask God to bless the ministry to the injured and upon all the recovery efforts.  Please keep all the residents of Joplin in your prayers.

Through this disaster in Joplin we are once again reminded how temporary this world is. Thanks be to God that through faith in His Son Jesus Christ, all who believe in Him have His promise of a life that will never end. As the Scriptures teach, "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."

Thanks,

DEVOTION: From LHM:
But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

Years ago I heard the story of a conservative Amish man who was taken to the city by a worldly friend.

Wishing to show the Amish gentleman the wonders of modern society, a prolonged stop was made at a giant mall. Together the men toured one store after another.

After the visit, the Amish man was asked, "Well, are you impressed by what you saw?"

The Amish man thought, then he nodded in agreement. The nod was explained when he said, "I truly was impressed. I never thought there were so many things I didn't want or need."

That was the way I felt reading the story of the man who was recently arrested at Bangkok's international airport. While the man was being held in custody, officials went through his luggage. Inside his suitcases they found two baby leopards, two newborn panthers, a young Asiatic black bear and two monkeys. All were about the size of puppies; all had been drugged and some were in cages, which held them flat to minimize movement.

And where was the man going with his mini menagerie?

His first-class ticket said he was headed to Dubai.

And why Dubai? Well, folks it's this way: on Thailand's black market a leopard or panther will sell for a paltry $5,000 or so. But if an entrepreneur-smuggler can get those leopards or panthers to oil-rich Dubai, well, he's going to turn a real profit. There, people keep such animals as status symbols or to move ahead of their neighbors.

It was the kind of news story which made me cringe. Animals were paying the price to stroke an overpowering human ego, an overwhelming craving for stuff.

When Jesus told us to "seek first the Kingdom of God," He probably wasn't referring to folks who wanted to own an Asiatic bear as a pet. Even so, those words need to be heard by the black-market buyers who ordered those animals.

They also need to be heard by us.

Too often our priorities get messed up, and God gets put on the back burner while we search for the newest and the latest. Brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Far better for us to thank the Father in heaven that His Son never forgot He had come to save the world -- not figure out a way He could own the world's transient riches.

His is an example we should follow.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there is a poem which reads, "All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all." From that poem as well as Your Word may we learn respect for the Creator and His creation. May our priorities be kept in the proper order. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!   OAFC (Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ) will be here June 3-5
This is a group of high school age youth and their adult leaders who goes to a different church once a month and canvasses neighborhoods for that church.  They do a survey that asks questions like, "What church do you go to?"  "Do you know about Jesus?"  and "Are you going to heaven?"   They also help to lead worship and go to a nursing home to minister to the people there.

What we need from you is the following:  (I know that the luau is Saturday night, but you can still pick the kids up around 10pm to take them home with you.)
HOUSING- They will be here all weekend and so they will need housing for Friday and Saturday night and breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning.  All other meals will be at church.  There will be approximately 15 people so any housing arrangements you can provide would be appreciated.

SUPPORT and PARTICIPATION- If you have time available on Saturday, please come and join them in their activities.  You will be greatly blessed!

HELP WITH MEALS- Not sure what the meals will be yet, but if you would like to help with them it would be greatly appreciated.  It would consist of lunch and supper on Saturday and lunch on Sunday after Bible study.  It may just be Subway for lunch and pizza for supper and then a light carry in on Sunday morning.

MISSION FOR THE MONTH OF MAY IS AGAPE

We have supported this organization for many years, ever since Pastor Langhoff along with a concerned group of individuals organized it and got it going back almost 20 years ago.

This year is a little different because two of their usual grants were denied this year totalling $145,000.  They are in desperate need of funds and support.

Anything you can provide will be a blessing to them and to the hundreds and even thousands of people they serve.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
GET YOUR QUESTIONAIRES IN ASAP!!
Last week each communicant member of the church received a letter and a questionaire concerning your view of how things are going with your church.  You have one more week to get them filled out and sent to Pastor Wyssmann.

Please fill it out thoroughly.  If you are having some sort of trouble with the church, please make sure you make that known.  If everything is going great and you are pleased with the church and things going on, make sure you make that known as well.  We need to be able to rejoice and have joy in all that God is doing a well.

St. John's Group Email update on Roby McNew's brother Ken Meyer

Yesterday we had a setback…Ken's heart rate went really low and blood pressure too. This morning nurses said he was so lucid they couldn't believe it. He knew the college he went to, the year he graduated high school, what his job was, his brother Aaron's name and even read the nurses badge and said her name. He went to swallow therapy and ate food and chewed ice. They changed him over to hand feeding today. Then, later in the morning his blood pressure went way down again. He was out the rest of the day and finally late this evening, he woke up.

He asked if it was a dream or real. I told him it was real. Nurse was asking him a lot of questions. He asked are you all done asking me questions now? We said yes and asked if he wanted to ask us any questions. He said, "What is going on?" I told him the whole story (short version). He said, "I don't remember being in a coma." J He asked what proof there was that he was in a coma. Hahahaha He said, "all that happened without me?" I said, "You were the center of attention." We assured him he didn't have to go to work tomorrow and his grass was being mowed. He asked who was going to take care of him. I told him he could stay with me for a while, but not to worry about it now because he has to see how he does in therapy.

He ate applesauce, took his meds with applesauce, drank one med from a cup, drank water from a straw, ate more applesauce, ate peaches, ate chocolate ice cream. Told nurse he had to use the restroom. He went to sleep for a while and then woke up and asked if he really was at Barnes Hospital. Then he went to sleep again. He is still somewhat confused, but he is doing very good and has good recall memory. If he eats good Sunday, he may get to go to Rehab early, like maybe Monday. We had planned for Wednesday originally.

I tell him over and over he is a miracle!

Robyn

St. John's Group Email from your board of evangelism and outreach "Why Go To Church?"

SOMETHING TO PONDER TODAY  FROM YOUR ST. JOHN'S BOARD OF OUTREACH & EVANGELISM  Tell someone about Jesus today!

If  you're spiritually  alive,  you're going to love this!

If  you're spiritually  dead,  you won't want to read it.

If  you're spiritually  curious,  there is still hope!

Why Go To Church?

A  Church goer wrote  a letter to the  editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense  to go to church every Sunday.  "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in  that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons.  But for the life of me, I can't  remember a single one of them..  So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the  editor.  It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've  been married for 30 years now.  In that  time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals.   But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the  entire menu for a single one of those meals.  But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed  to do my work. If my wife had not given me  these meals, I would be physically dead  today.  Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually  dead today!"  When you are DOWN to  nothing..... God is UP to something!  Faith  sees the invisible, believes the incredible and  receives the impossible!  Thank God for our  physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

All right, now that you're done reading, send it on!

I think everyone should read this!

"When Satan is knocking at your door, simply  say, "Jesus,  could you get that for me?"

DEVOTION: From LHM:
(Jesus said) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me." John 5:39

A person might easily be excused if he or she were to conclude everyone in the scientific community is opposed to Christianity. After all, the naysayers to the Redeemer and His work do seem to grab the majority of the headlines.

Still, it should be noted there are many educated minds that are most supportive of Scripture and the Savior.

One of those men is Dr. Marvin Bittinger, a prominent mathematics professor from Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis.

In his new book, The Faith Equation: Mathematical Evidence for Christianity, Bittinger says there is plenty of proof to support the Christian faith. He maintains some of that evidence can be found by taking a mathematical look at the prophecies found in God's Scriptures.

Dr. Bittinger argues there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of fulfilled prophecies in the Bible. Mathematically the fulfillment of that number of predictions is incredibly improbable. Indeed, if these prophecies hadn't been fulfilled, we would have to say the chances against their realization would be impossible.

All of this means, since those prophecies have been completed, a reasonable person must acknowledge God's divine hand has been involved.

"And," Dr. Bittinger suggests, "we also have to acknowledge that prophecies which are not yet fulfilled will be."

As Dr. Bittinger says, "it tells me I better pay attention to the prophecies that are unresolved because they're going to happen."

Now I have to be honest, I haven't read all of Dr. Bittinger's book. On the other hand, I simply have to like a guy who says, "God gave everyone a brain to use for His defense."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks for those who have eyes to see Your love and minds to share the Savior's story of salvation. I give thanks for those who are bold to speak in the Redeemer's defense. Now may I, following their example, use my brain to share the Christ's blessed and successful work with others. In the Savior's Name.
