(Jesus said) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me." John 5:39
A person might easily be excused if he or she were to conclude everyone in the scientific community is opposed to Christianity. After all, the naysayers to the Redeemer and His work do seem to grab the majority of the headlines.
Still, it should be noted there are many educated minds that are most supportive of Scripture and the Savior.
One of those men is Dr. Marvin Bittinger, a prominent mathematics professor from Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis.
In his new book, The Faith Equation: Mathematical Evidence for Christianity, Bittinger says there is plenty of proof to support the Christian faith. He maintains some of that evidence can be found by taking a mathematical look at the prophecies found in God's Scriptures.
Dr. Bittinger argues there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of fulfilled prophecies in the Bible. Mathematically the fulfillment of that number of predictions is incredibly improbable. Indeed, if these prophecies hadn't been fulfilled, we would have to say the chances against their realization would be impossible.
All of this means, since those prophecies have been completed, a reasonable person must acknowledge God's divine hand has been involved.
"And," Dr. Bittinger suggests, "we also have to acknowledge that prophecies which are not yet fulfilled will be."
As Dr. Bittinger says, "it tells me I better pay attention to the prophecies that are unresolved because they're going to happen."
Now I have to be honest, I haven't read all of Dr. Bittinger's book. On the other hand, I simply have to like a guy who says, "God gave everyone a brain to use for His defense."
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks for those who have eyes to see Your love and minds to share the Savior's story of salvation. I give thanks for those who are bold to speak in the Redeemer's defense. Now may I, following their example, use my brain to share the Christ's blessed and successful work with others. In the Savior's Name. Amen.

MISSION FOR THE MONTH OF MAY IS AGAPE
We have supported this organization for many years, ever since Pastor Langhoff along with a concerned group of individuals organized it and got it going back almost 20 years ago.
This year is a little different because two of their usual grants were denied this year totalling $145,000. They are in desperate need of funds and support.
Anything you can provide will be a blessing to them and to the hundreds and even thousands of people they serve.

GET YOUR QUESTIONAIRES IN ASAP!!
Last week each communicant member of the church received a letter and a questionaire concerning your view of how things are going with your church. You have one more week to get them filled out and sent to Pastor Wyssmann.
Please fill it out thoroughly. If you are having some sort of trouble with the church, please make sure you make that known. If everything is going great and you are pleased with the church and things going on, make sure you make that known as well. We need to be able to rejoice and have joy in all that God is doing a well.

St. John's Group Email FW: New Development in Ruth's Health
To All of Ruth Cantrell's Friends and Family
As some of you know Ruth was scheduled to see a specialist, Dr. Sophia Chung, at SLU last week. Dr. Chung along with several Residents examined Ruth for over 4 hours and determined it was probable the return of the cancer at the pituitary gland area that was noted when she was in the hospital in March. She was sent to SLU Hospital for a high resolution MRI that they have and it was confirmed that the growth on the pituitary gland had grown rapidly and this is what is causing all the eye problems. We were then referred to the SLU Cyberknife (directional radiation) program at Lake St. Louis. We went to see Dr. John Bedwinek Friday and he agreed with Dr. Chung's diagnosis and felt they could treat the growth on the pituitary gland with no problem with the Cyberknife program. His main concern was her second condition of being very tired, sleepy and lethargic. It could be several things and some are not good and it will require more testing. Ruth is scheduled for a Spinal Tap and PET scan next week to try and isolate the second condition.
I am sending this email to let people know her condition, right now she is tired and would rather not talk on the phone. We will let everyone know her progress as anything new happens.

If I get $500 raised I get two tickets to a Cardinals game. ... The wind shall carry them away, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the LORD; in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory. Isaiah 41:16b
A few weeks ago most of us didn't know what EF5 stood for.
Now we know, and we wish we didn't. Now we know an EF5 is the biggest, nastiest, most destructive tornado that can be measured. At least one of the tornadoes that hit the southern states last month was rated an EF5. As the others are evaluated, it is expected they will be awarded a similar unpleasant rating.
Because we have seen the pictures and films we also know that any tornado -- no matter what the rating -- has the ability to flatten homes, turn a community upside down and mess with plans, hopes, families, futures and lives.
What some are not sure of is why?
Why do such storms happen and why do they hurt so many good people? We want to know if God has the power to stop such things, why doesn't He? Surely a caring God could do that, couldn't He? These are the kinds of questions that can sometimes shake a Christian's faith.
This is why some answers need to be given. First, you should know these things happen because this is a sinful world and a sinful world produces terrible things. When good people get in the path of a terrible thing, especially an EF5 tornado, they will get hurt.
And why doesn't the all-powerful God stop these tornadoes? It's certainly not because He doesn't care, He does care. Although every storm like this does produce stories of miraculous deliverances, generally the Lord does not directly and miraculously intervene. Generally the Lord, who has called this world's laws into being, lets those laws function unchanged.
Does that sound like He doesn't care? If so, look at the manger of Bethlehem; look at the scourged Savior; stand before Calvary's cross. Never think, not for a moment, that God doesn't care. So we might escape the eternal penalties of sin, Jesus lived, died and rose.
Because of what Jesus has done, an EF5 doesn't have the final word in the lives of God's people.
Never! And that deliverance is the handiwork of a caring God.
THE PRAYER: Father in heaven, we come to You and ask that You will send an extra measure of the Holy Spirit upon those whose lives have been upset and torn apart by these tornadoes. Be with all those who are trying to recover from a disaster. Be with them and let them see that Jesus is the Victor over sin and sin's worst actions. In the Name of the Lord Jesus I pray it. Amen

St. John's Group Email Request from God Cares Ministry: help needed for Mark Hickman
I am sending this email out because Mark is still homeless and is in need of a hotel stay, food, assistance with gas, and his medicine. Could you please share this email with as many people as possible in hopes that someone can help him this week? His battery died in the van that he's been living in, he has no gas, and only 2 dollars for food. Thanks, Kia

St. John's Group Email Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Jesus said) "... And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20b
I tried. I really tried.
For years I've resisted speaking about Britney Spears, Madonna and so many other folks in the media. I have even resisted hopping on board the Kate and William wedding bandwagon.
Until now.
Maybe you, like me, have been amazed at the feeding frenzy that has surrounded Kate's dress. If you were to believe the TV folks doing the color commentary, there were three people at that wedding: Kate, the dress and, running a distant third, William.
From the moment the dress was revealed to the estimated 2 billion people who were watching, it has been praised, honored, criticized and vilified. At this point in time I know more about the dress than I know about some of my first cousins.
It's been said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. If that's true, Kate ought to feel very flattered. After all, her example is being followed by many. Right now, even as you are reading this devotion, in factories around the globe, reproductions of the dress are being made for the world's would-be princesses.
All of this makes me wonder ... will buying a special dress -- even a perfect copy of the dress -- bring about happiness and fulfillment?
If you readers know the answer to that question, you are ahead of many. Those who watched the wedding, those who gasped at the millions that were spent, those who were awed by all the pomp and pageantry are being led to think happiness is found in frills and externals.
Sadly, time will show the glitz and glitter -- as impressive as they may be -- don't have the ability to deliver that which we need if we are to be truly content and complete.
Yes, they may give a person a heady high, but that feeling is transient. To receive that which is of lasting value we need to go to Jesus. Only the One who gave His life upon Calvary's cross is able to give us the peace that passes all understanding.
And why is that? Only Jesus' blood can offer us the forgiveness of sins. Only the presence of the Christ can comfort us when we are ready to die. Only the Redeemer can promise to lead us safely through the valley of the shadow.
And only Jesus can keep His promise to be with us always. You remember His promise. It's one that says He will be with us in sickness and health, in richer and for poorer, for far longer than you and I both shall live.
THE PRAYER: Father in heaven, accept my thanks for a Savior who is keeping His promises to be with us and watch over me. May I turn to Him for the genuine peace that passes understanding, the peace which the world cannot give. This I ask in the Name of the Christ. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: According to Psalm 139, what does God know? He knows when we sit down and when we rise, he perceives my thoughts from afar, he knows my going out and lying down, he is familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue he knows it completely.

TODAY's QUIZ: To what tune is Psalm 22 set?
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
CATECHISM:
Question: How is human reason to be used in understanding Scripture?
Answer:
A. It is given in human language. To determine what it says we need to apply the rules of language, such as grammar and logic. It is right to use reason as a servant of the text, but the guidance of the Holy SPirit is essential for its proper understanding.
B. Unlike all other books, Holy Scripture is God's Word and truth. It is wrong to question or deny the truthfulness of the sacred text.
