DEVOTION from Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Jesus said) "And what I say to you I say to all: 'Stay awake.'" Mark 13:37

Last week on a flight to Chicago, I sat next to a "white-knuckler." For those of you who don't know, a white-knuckler is a person who is terrified to fly.

Me, I'm usually asleep before we taxi away from the gate and I wake up when we land. Knowing I can't do anything in the unlikely situation something goes wrong I usually take a catnap.

On the other hand, I expect others -- others who are in control of my immediate future -- to stay awake. One of the people I'd like to have awake and alert is the pilot; the other is the air-traffic controller.

This is why the reports about controllers and pilots sleeping have been rather disturbing.

The Wall Street Journal says there are any number of reasons to explain why a controller might drift off to lullaby land: too many hours, too much stress, working in a darkened room, periods of intense commotion followed by hours of inactivity -- they all can contribute to an individual falling asleep. Even so, there is nothing more important than for the controller to stay awake and alert.

Lives depend on them staying awake.

It occurs to me that the same holds true for us. We need to stay spiritually awake. Indeed, in the text above Jesus tells us we need to be watchful; we need to be ready for that unknown hour when He returns.

To spiritually fall asleep, to be ignorant or oblivious to the great grace we have been given through Jesus' life, suffering, death and resurrection is incredibly dangerous. Indeed, to fall asleep on that job doesn't just jeopardize our eternal home. It guarantees we will crash.

This is why, in spite of the world's distractions and regardless of the devil's temptations, there is nothing more important for us than to be prepared for the day of personal or global judgment.

So to you and to all who see these words, we pass on the Savior's advice and encouragement: "Stay awake."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You have done all that is necessary to save me. Now I pray that I, along with the rest of the world may value Your gift. Keep us awake so our last day on earth may be a blessed one. In Your Name I ask it. Amen.

In Christ I remain His servant and yours,

Pastor Ken Klaus

MISSION FOR THE MONTH OF MAY IS AGAPE

We have supported this organization for many years, ever since Pastor Langhoff along with a concerned group of individuals organized it and got it going back almost 20 years ago.

This year is a little different because two of their usual grants were denied this year totalling $145,000.  They are in desperate need of funds and support.

Anything you can provide will be a blessing to them and to the hundreds and even thousands of people they serve.

His memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 14.  Visitation 11am-12noon; service- noon; luncheon immediately following.

Memorial gifts are to be made to St. John's Lutheran Church for the general fund.

    QUESTIONAIRES MAILED MONDAY
As most of you know our church is going through a time that we call the CARE process.  CARE stands for Congregational Assessment and Renewal.  It is a time that we can take a step back and look at things that are going on in our church, assess what is good and bad, work on fixing the bad, reconcile and restore broken relationships, emphasize the good, and grow together as a congregation.

We took the first step last Wednesday night with the congregational meeting, at which Pastor Gene Wyssmann and Ken Wesemann led us through the process and introduced different ways of thinking about our church and also how the process will work.

TODAY OR TOMORROW each communicant member of the church  will get a questionnaire/survey in the mail (If there are four communicant members in yoru household you will get four surveys) that is two pages in length and will require your thought and input.  It will come with a self addresses and stamped envelope that will get mailed directly to Pastor Wyssmann who will collate all of the information he recieves, discuss it with Pastor Wesemann and President Mirly and then come back to St. John's to give us recommendations on how to move forward.

I urge you to complete the survey and send it in.  It is vital to the health and growth of the church that you do so.

God bless you as you contemplate the questions and answer them thoroughly.

St. John's Group Email update on Robyn McNew's brother Ken Meyer

They've prescribed some medication to help Kenny, which we feel will help him get back on the road to recovery. He just started taking it today, so we will see how it goes in the days to come. He may be moving to St. Johns Mercy Rehab hospital, but not sure when.

You are all so wonderful! We are blessed to have relatives and friends like you!

I'm soooo tired. If anybody wants to come and do yardwork, laundry and house cleaning for me, you are welcome J just kidding!

    Robyn

    DEVOTION from Lutheran Hour Ministries.
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, not to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.1 Timothy 6:17

As of this writing, the prices of gold and gas have been going up even as the prices of most homes have continued to slide.

Things which once appeared to be secure no longer seem so.

This is why all of us want to make sure our money is being kept in a safe place -- a place like a bank -- but not the bank in Lucknow, India.

Some folks in that community wanted to make doubly sure their cash was safe. That's why they stored their rupees, 10 million rupees (about $220,000) in a steel chest, a chest which they entrusted to the vaults of their local bank.

    That was in January.

Recently, a check was made on the condition of the cash -- the no-longer-there cash. What happened? Some daring thief? Some teller gone bad?

Nope. Nothing that dramatic. Apparently, an army of termites contentedly consumed the currency. The bank reports in the past they have had termites go through documents and furniture, but this is the first time they ever went for the dough.

This all goes to prove St. Paul was right when he said we shouldn't set our hopes on the uncertainty of riches.

History and experience tell us there are few things in this life that can be trusted, and certainly nothing and no one as reliable as the Triune God. In the Person of His Son, our Savior, He faithfully kept the promise of hope He first gave to our ancestors when they sinned.

With all Old Testament prophecies fulfilled through Jesus' life, suffering, death and resurrection, the Christ has shown He can be trusted and the grace He extends to us is a permanent thing.

This is why the writer to the Hebrews encourages us with these words: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful" (Hebrews 10:23).

It's something to remember in uncertain times.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I give thanks that while this world is filled with things uncertain, You can always be trusted and relied upon. Grant me the grace to look to You for hope in this world as well as in the next. This I ask in Your Name. Amen.

    CATECHISM:
Question: Why do we call the Bible the Holy Scripture?
Answer: The Bible is the "Holy Scripture" because God the Holy Spirit gave to His chosen writers the thoughts that they expressed and the words that they wrote (verbal inspiration.  Therfore the Bible us God's own word and truth, without error (inerrancy).

Note: God gave the Old Testament in hebrew and Aramaic and the New testament in Greek.  Errors in copying or translations are not part of the God-breathed (inspired) Scripture.

    DEVOTION from Lutheran Hour Ministries.

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the Word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before You will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?" Revelation 6:9-10

"Shadenfreude." (SHOD-n- froy-duh) Shadenfreude is a German word which doesn't have a really good translation. The best I can come up with is rejoicing over someone else's misfortune.

While I can't translate shadenfreude well, I can give you a couple of examples.

    * If you've ever watched a slapstick Keystone Kops film and found yourself laughing after someone got a pie in the face or slipped on a banana peel, that was shadenfreude.

    * In the Passion narrative of the Savior, we see many of the people gathered around the cross laughing and mocking the Savior. That, too, was shadenfreude.

    * Ten years ago, when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were brought down, there were reports of people in some Islamic countries who were rejoicing. Although it made us mad to hear about such a thing, that was shadenfreude.

Last night we heard how a ten-year-manhunt had come to a conclusion during a bloody battle in Pakistan. The final score was Navy Seals 1, bin Laden 0. As a citizen of the U.S., I felt justice had been done, some of my countrymen had been avenged and a terrorist had been stopped.

    Shadenfreude.

Then, as a Christian I remembered how those folks from another faith had rejoiced when our people were killed. I remembered how I hadn't liked what they did back then and I figured they wouldn't like what I was doing now.

More importantly, I remembered that bin Laden was a fellow for whom Jesus had died, a fellow who had been and will remain spiritually lost. There was no more shadenfreude.

Am I glad bin Laden is gone? Absolutely. Bringing him to justice was something our nation had to do. But I fear, like the Hydra of Greek mythology, when you cut off one head of the heads of bin Laden's organization of hate, two heads will grow back.

All of this is why my prayer today asks that the Savior who died to destroy sin and Satan will also destroy the escalating violence which is sure to come. May the Prince of Peace grant us peace so the Word may be preached and the lost may meet the Savior.

THE PRAYER: Father in heaven there are times when a nation must take action and do things that are unpleasant. Ten years ago an attack was made against this country and today the individual who masterminded that attack has been brought to justice. Now I pray that even though Islam and Christianity can never agree, our faith will be used by the Holy Spirit to share the Savior with those who are still in the dark. May they come to know that Jesus is their Savior. In His Name. Amen.

    QUESTIONAIRES MAILED TODAY
As most of you know our church is going through a time that we call the CARE process.  CARE stands for Congregational Assessment and Renewal.  It is a time that we can take a step back and look at things that are going on in our church, assess what is good and bad, work on fixing the bad, reconcile and restore broken relationships, emphasize the good, and grow together as a congregation.

We took the first step last night with the congregational meeting, at which Pastor Gene Wyssmann and Ken Wesemann led us through the process and introduced different ways of thinking about our church and also how the process will work.

This coming week each communicant member of the church  will get a questionnaire/survey in the mail (If there are four communicant members in yoru household you will get four surveys) that is two pages in length and will require your thought and input.

St. John's Group Email Monday, May 3, 2011

    DEVOTION:  Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Yesterday, John Hachtel, chairman of the board of elders, got up in front of church after worship to pray for our church.  For the next several weeks all of our other elders will be doing the same.  It is an effort to get the whole church to pray for each other and for the body of believers as a whole.  Therefore, it is not the be all and end all of your prayers for the church but only the encouragement to continue to pray.

That goes for your whole life as well.  I have noticed, in my own life, that when I don't present my requests to God in certain circumstances or troubles, that this is when I only cause more troubles by my own actions.  When I try to figure things out and do things myself without consulting God or letting God handle it in His own way, I find myself just making a bigger mess of things.

When we do "by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our requests to God" we can find ourselves better able to put things in perspective, keep God's will at the forefront of our thoughts and actions, and live in that "peace that transcends all understanding".  When we put God in control of our lives there is nothing else that can happen but that things go better and all things work out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

I am not telling you anything new, but all of us, especially us pastors, need to be reminded of this daily.  We need to be humbled by God's power and grace in our lives to know that we cannot force anything, but that God's will is always ultimately going to be done.

My prayer for our church is the God works out our conflicts and our struggles according to His will, that He does what He wants with this church, and that we all grow closer to Him in our daily lives.

Let us pray:  Lord God, help us to bring everything to You by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, so that You may take care of our needs, bless us, and grow us together in Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

St. John's Group Email prayer request

Robyn McNew's brother, Ken Meyer, continues to make some miraculous recoveries.  He is still far from out of the woods, but has been more responsive as of late.  The family is more optimistic that he may make a recovery.

St. John's Group Email prayer for the family and friends of Les Sherman

Les Sherman passed from death to life eternal this morning at about 10:45am.  Please pray for his family and friends who mourn the loss of a great Christian husband, father, grandfather and brother in Christ.

    Peace be with you all!

St. John's Group Email prayer request for Jim Rahn's dad

My Dad had some tests run this morning because of some concerns noted on a Cat Scan. The results of the test were sent to his doctor before lunch. He was scheduled for brain surgery this afternoon  to open a passage that will allow his body to vent  fluid away from a build up point. This fluid would build up pressure. He would become disoriented and dizzy. The surgery should alleviate these symptoms. Please pray for the surgeons hand to be guided by God.

Kenny is on hospice now with full comfort measures. He is going home to his own house sometime today. My sister Bonnie is here from Maine and is going to stay and take care of him. She will take excellent care of him because she is meticulous and because she loves him dearly. Ken will pass away peacefully in his own room in his own house.

St. John's Group Email Thursday, April 28, 2011

    DEVOTION:  2 Corinthians 5:16-20
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh.  Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.  All this is from God, who, through Christ, reconciled us to Himself and gave us this ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the wordl to Himself, not counting their tresspasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.  Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.  We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

When you look in the mirror, or take a good hard look at yourself and your life, how do you regard yourself?  Is it according to the flesh with all its failures, shortcomings, and brokenness?  if so, you may find yourself depressed, angry, bitter, and discouraged.  You may think of yourself as worthless and horrible.  You may even wonder why God is keeping you alive.

Or do you regard yourself according to being "in Christ"?  If so you see yourself as a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come.  You regard your life as now hidden with God in Christ.  You see yourself as you no longer living but Christ living in you.

In the passage above Paul instructs us to think of ourselves and each other in this way.  He wants us to regard each other as we are, as brothers and sisters in Christ.  He wants us to see each other as Jesus' forgiven and saved children.

If we regard each other according to the flesh and judge each other in such a way, then we will see nothing but sin, because our flesh, including our brain is full of it.  If we regard each other according to the SPirit that lives in us, then we will see each other as we truly are.

I encourage you all to see each other, especially those with whom you have conflicts and troubles, the way the Father sees you.  If you see Jesus in people then you will have no other choice but to forgive and love, which, after all, is Christ's greatest command.

Prayer:  Lord God, help us to see Christ in each other so that we may fulfill the law of love and grow together in Christ.  Amen.

St. John's Group Email Update on Friday storms: from the Missour District Office LCMS

Christ is Risen!  He is Risen indeed!  Hallelujah!  I pray that your Easter worship was uplifting and celebrative.

I'm sure that you join me in giving thanks to our gracious heavenly Father for providing protection for all who were directly impacted by the severe weather in the greater St. Louis Metropolitan area this past Friday.  The T.V. images are almost beyond comprehension, aren't they?

Saturday morning I phoned each church office and/or pastor that I believed might have been impacted by the severe weather.  There were only a couple of instances where I had to leave a voice mail.  From personal contacts I can report to you that of those I spoke with, no LCMS church or associated property sustained any significant damage.  Further, only one pastor reported having a member that lost their home.  Others reported some tree damage, yard debris, fences blown down, etc.

If you, a member, or someone in your community did sustain damage and are in need of immediate financial assistance, please contact Glen Merritt (314.996.1395) at Lutheran World Relief and Human Care.  He and his department will guide you to the application process for such assistance.

Other agencies or organizations providing assistance are:

United Way's 211 is serving as the central information point for all activity related to the disaster.  If you know of someone affected by the tornadoes, have them call 211 to access help.  Operators are available 24/7.  Dial 211 (just like 911 in an emergency) from a landline or (314) 421-INFO from a cell phone.  Information is free and confidential.

If your congregation wants to help:

    • Call United Way's 211 for volunteer opportunities.  They are coordinating information on how best/where to volunteer.  Dial 211 (just like 911 in an emergency) from a landline or (314) 421-INFO from a cell phone.
    • Response organizations ask that you NOT just "show up" in a neighborhood to help as this could have unintended negative consequences.  Please volunteer through a disaster response organization.
    • Service International organized a clean-up effort today in the Bridgeton area.  Volunteers were to report to Grace Church (2695 Creve Coeur Mill Road, Maryland Heights) and wear work boots/hard-soled shoes.  While this work will probably go on all week, please contact United Way's 211 each day to see if volunteers continue to be needed at this location or at new locations.
    • Please do NOT start a clothing or supply drive in your congregation.  While these items may be needed down the line, at this point there does not exist a mass collection facility and the need for specific items is as yet undetermined.
    • Be aware that the recovery effort will take months.  Continue to be in contact with United Way's 211 for ways in which your congregation can get involved on an on-going basis.
    • You can donate money to the following organizations:
      • Lutheran Family & Children's Services of Missouri - designate the gift for St. Louis Disaster Response.  They will focus on long-term recovery needs
      • American Red Cross
      • Salvation Army
      • If you choose to donate to other organizations, please do your research to determine their reputation and effectiveness

    God bless your day,

    Rev. Ray Mirly
