There is no one signed up for this Sunday (Palm Sunday and Confirmation Sunday) and the late service on Easter.  These are two very important services and it would be really nice to have someone set for those days so I am not rushing aorund looking for someone on Confirmation day and Easter Sunday right before the service.

Please, please, please volunteer!

Peace on your day!

DEVOTION:  Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against Him, how they might destroy Him. Matthew 12:14

Here's a question for you fellas out there who have a daughter: Is there any man in the world who is good enough to be her husband? I know your answer already. The only question is how long did it take you to give that answer?

That maybe explains why we have kind of a sick smile on our faces when the minister asks, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?" We say, "Her mother and I do," but we really want to say, "Me and my baby girl are outta here. I've been against this wedding from the beginning."

Of course, we're usually the only folks who feel that way.

Not so for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Threatening to disrupt their wedding are terrorists and anarchists and anti-monarchists along with a whole gaggle of other protesters.

Poor kids. They've got too many groups against them.

This is pretty much the way Jesus must have felt when He was here on earth. In the text above it was the Pharisees who were trying to kill Him. Look in other passages and you will find the Sadducees were after Him, as were the Herodians, as were the ...

So many groups were plotting His murder. They need not have bothered. Even before He was born He was headed to the cross. Before He ever took His first nap in that Bethlehem manger, He was set on the path that would end at Golgotha.

Amazingly, even though He knew where His path was going, even though He fully knew what He would have to endure, Jesus continued on.

And He did so carrying our sins.

It was His Father's will and wish. It was the fulfillment of the plan that would cleanse us of our sins and open the doors of heaven to all who believe.

Yes, Jesus continued on and I am thankful He finished His work on the cross and showed us His Resurrection Day victory.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord and Heavenly Father, I pray You will watch over the young royals and all those who will soon be married. Be with all of us and allow us to stand firm in the faith. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZWho was Ittai the Gittite?  A Phillistine that was in David's army.  David didn't think he belonged and told him to go be with Absalom.  Molly Hendershot

Ittai was willing to follow King David out of Jerusalem, was later given great authority in the kingdom, while Absalom, the king's heir, lost his life while pursuing his selfish ambitions.  Doug Herzog

We sure do have some smart cookies at St. John's, don't we?

CARE PROCESS TO START WEDNESDAY,  APRIL 27 AT 6:30pm with a congregation meeting.
The leaders of our church and many others would appreciate as many people being there as possible.

Let me know if you need someone to watch your kids so you can be there.

Even if you have no conflicts within the church, it would be good for you to be there to lend your encouragement and support to those who need it and to show your concern for your brothers and sisters in Christ.  Besides, you may have use for some of the things you learn in other parts of your life.

I really want you all to make every effort to be there.  I will find a babysitter for you if you need one.

St. John's Group Email prayer request

Please pray for Rebecca Tedford, cousin of Naomi Johnson, who had a heart attack at age 39 and is in critical condition.

St. John's Group Email Wednesday, April 13, 2011

DEVOTION:  (Jesus said) "And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Matthew 25:10-13

Pastor's Note: This devotion talks about a state lottery. The reference to the practice should not in any way be construed as an endorsement or approval. The truth is the story was simply too good not to use.

$319 million is a lot of money. Even when you divide the $319 million into seven piles, those piles are still pretty big.

$319 million is the amount of cash being split between a group of seven folks who work at the Albany Department of Housing and Community Renewal. Each of them is picking up around $19 million.

But there's another group of people who work at that same location -- five folks who normally chip in on the ticket for the Mega Millions pool, but for some reason, didn't. I don't know the reason they didn't hand over the necessary $2, but at least one of them said he didn't "feel lucky that day."

Those five are splitting, well, they're splitting nothing. They're left on the outside looking in -- just like the women in Jesus' parable about the wedding feast. Because those ladies let a chance for admission slip by, they also found themselves on the outside looking in.

Now if you're left out of things in a story, that's not too big a deal. And if you don't win the lottery, you can be comforted because there are a few million people who played that same lottery and they ended up with nothing ... just like you.

But what can be said when someone misses his chance to get into heaven? What comfort can be given to the individual who had the opportunity to believe, had the opportunity to acknowledge the Savior?

What comfort could be given to those who rejected the Savior who died on the cross and rose so they might live? Truly, it would be hell, just as it would be heaven, for all who were brought to faith in the Savior's blood.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel and that He has encouraged and kept me in the faith. Now I pray for those who don't know or refuse to acknowledge You. Now, before it is too late, may they see the wonders and blessedness of Your sacrifice which saves. In Your Name I ask it Amen.

DEVOTION:  2 Corinthians 2:5-10 "Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not just to me, but in some measure-- not to put it too severely-- to all of you.  For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.  So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.  For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedeient in everything.  Anyone who you forgive, I also forgive,   Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs."

Our Lord God, has given us very clear direction on how to deal with conflict and with a sinner who has hurt others but who has  also repented of his sin.  In our passage above the Lord directs the Corinthians, through Paul. as to how they are to minister to a Christian who has sinned greatly and hurt the whole congregation in Corinth and even Paul.  It looks as though Paul was definitely hurt by what the person did, but he also explains how the whole congregation was hurt.  In this passage also we see, how Paul's mind and his direction is forgiveness not just so that the person might be kept from excessive sorrow over the terrible things he had done, but so that the whole congregation might not be outwitted by Satan.

Our congregation, as well as many congregations in our LCMS are very similar in many ways as far as conflict is concerned:

Below is a letter from Doug Walters, our congregational president, detailing a new program called the CARE process that will be implemented in the coming weeks and months ahead to help us deal with the troubles that have arisen within our own congregation:  (Note: This is the same as the insert that was in the bulletin this past weekend.)

(Also note that this isn't just about recent events but about the congregation and the conflicts within the congregation as a whole._

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Over the years many conflicts have arisen within many of our Christian churches throughout the world.  St. John's is no different.  The conflicts at St. John's are between many members including pastor (At times pastor has even been the start or the continuation of a conflict) and throughout many groups within our church.  In order for us to be healthy Christians and a healthy congregation as a whole we need to reconcile with one another and resolve the many conflicts we have with each other.  We cannot be good witnesses to the world if we aren't good witnesses to each other.

In order to do this, our Missouri District office has prepared and offered to us the CARE process.  Two facilitators, Rev. Gene Wyssmann and Ken Wesemann will lead us through the process of reconciliation and renewal.  Below are the steps in this process:

1.       Authorization has already been given by the board of elders and the church council to proceed with this process and to bring it to fruition in our congregation.

2.        Rev. Dr. Ken Wesemann and Gene Wyssmann have already been assigned by District President Mirly to be facilitators.

3.        A congregational meeting will be conducted on Wednesday, April 27 from 6:30-9:30pm to explain the CARE Process to us and to discuss some of the healthy/unhealthy issues that are found in congregations.  The facilitators will seek input from the group in a very brief form.  This will allow us to start getting input.  This meeting typically lasts 3 hours.

4.       A questionnaire will be sent to all communicant members of the congregation and those that have left the congregation in the last 6 months, asking for their input. This is a two page form.  The letters are sent with a postage paid return envelope that will be sent by the participants to one of the facilitators.  This will insure confidentiality.  We ask the congregation to provide the cost for this mailing.

5.       Not sooner than two weeks after the deadline for receiving the questionnaires, the facilitators will be on site to conduct interviews.  The interviews last 20 minutes and follow the outline of the questionnaire.  There will be a total of 25 interviews conducted of participants randomly selected.  Ten will be randomly selected from the leaders of the congregation (officers, LWML chair, youth chair, etc.) Fifteen of the interviews will be randomly selected names from among the remaining members of the congregation.  In addition, interviews will be conducted for each congregation staff member (pastor, choir director, preschool director, etc.).  These interviews will not be given more weight in facilitator deliberations, but rather will provide the story and context of the issues in the congregation.  Primary information will be gathered from the questionaires.

6.       Following the collation of all the information, the facilitators will develop a presentation of findings and recommendations in collaboration with President Mirly.  The facilitators will return to a congregational meeting type setting and share those findings and recommendations. The facilitators will work with the congregation to establish an intentional plan to utilize the plans that the congregation has made for reconciliation.

7. The facilitators will make at least one return visit to the congregation to see how things are progressing.  The District will continue to support the congregation in the process as needed.

I implore you, as brothers and sisters in Christ, to take this seriously and participate fully.  I believe that it will be a most tremendous opportunity for us to learn to better love one another, forgive one another, and move forward as a congregation in the mission of the church to make disciples of all nations.  Peace be with you all!

Your servant in Christ,

                                                                                                                Doug Walters

Question: Why is it important to receive the Sacrament worthily?
Answer: It is very important because Paul clearly teaches: "WHoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks odf the cup.  For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.  1 Corinthians 11:27-29

Hey my computer literate friends,

My computer has several user accounts, one of which I use most frequently.

At this moment it is not listed when I log on and I am not able to find it.  Yet I know it is there because when I tried to create a new account with the same name it said it allready existed.

How do I get to my user account?

Thanks for your help.

St. John's Group Email Thusday, March 31, 2011

DEVOTION:
And he (a rich man) said, "No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent." He (Abraham) said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead." Luke 16:30-31

A voice from beyond the grave.

Sounds like something from Edgar Allen Poe, doesn't it? Well, this story has nothing to do with Poe or horror stories, and it really doesn't have anything to do with support of one candidate or another. (We really don't do politics in the Daily Devotions.)

The voice from beyond the grave to which I refer belongs to Jim Harrison whose cancer ended his life on February 27th. Before Harrison passed away, he wrote part of his newspaper obituary. It reads

"In lieu of flowers, at Jim's request, please make a donation to ANYONE running against Barack Hussein Obama or the American Cancer Society."

It was Harrison's way of trying to reach out and influence the living after he was dead and buried. Whether his idea works or not is anybody's guess.

Those who study Scripture know it isn't the first time that kind of thing has been tried. In Jesus' story about the rich man and Lazarus, the condemned rich man asks that Lazarus be allowed to come back from the dead and give a warning to the still-living brothers of the rich man.

The request was turned down. "After all," came the reply, "Your brothers have Moses and the Prophets, if they don't listen to those fellows, they're not going to pay attention -- even if someone was to return from the dead."

The parable was right.

We know it is right because almost 2,000 years ago God's Son did rise from the grave and showed Himself to His disciples and the world. Again and again He spoke with them, visited with them, ate with them and even touched them.

Yes, Jesus returned from the dead and many people have refused His offer of salvation. It's amazing, but it's true. People prefer to live in doubt and denial rather than hear the words of the Savior: "... Blessed are those who have not seen but believe" (John 20:29b).

If you're one of those not-having-seen-the-Savior individuals, today would be a good day to give thanks for the Holy Spirit's work in your heart and life.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel. By Your great grace I have been given faith in the living Savior who does not speak from the grave, but has returned to life and conquered the grave. May I share Him whenever I am able. In His Name. Amen.

TODAY'S QUIZ:   What was the name of the Phillistine that David killed with a sling and a stone?

CATECHISM:
Question: Who receives the Sacrament worthily?
Answer: Fasting and bodily preparation are certainly fine outward training, but that person is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: "Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins."  But anyone who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, for the words "for you" require all hearts to believe.

AGAPE DESPERATELY NEEDS OUR HELP!!!!

Agape Ministry needs your help. We have just mailed out the letter for our annual campaign. We desperately need this campaign to do well. Our goal is $30,000, which is the same it has been for 3 years. Unfortunately, we have lost $175,000 in grant funding over the last 3 years.

Agape has two food pantries: one in Warrenton and one in Wright City. We feed about 1,200 people every month out of the food pantries. In addition we help many more with one-time, emergency payments of rent or utilities as needed to avoid homelessness.

Last year at this time we had spend $22,000 helping people avoid homelessness. This year we haven't even spent $6,500. I wish I could say this was due to reduced demand, but in fact the demand is higher than ever. What's been reduced is funding. If your church distributes benevolent funds you have probably noticed an increase in requests and an increase in the number of people saying that Agape could not help.

In previous years we had the proceeds from the sale of 70 percent Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits and a grant from the Missouri Housing Trust Fund. This year we were rejected in our application to both of those sources. We then applied for a grant to the Missouri Foundation for Health, but they also rejected us. The State rejected us because they have their own money troubles. The MFH rejected us because they say our focus is not health related. The three combined equal $175,000. All of this would have been used to prevent homelessness in Warren County.

If you have been to our thrift store lately you know we have been blessed with success there. Those proceeds keep our doors open and buy food for our pantries. Donations from your churches also go to buy food. What we're missing – what we need to raise – is money to prevent homelessness. Right now the electric companies cannot disconnect people for unpaid bills because the Cold Weather Rule is in effect. But as it warms up that rule will expire, and I am very concerned about what people will do if we have no funds to assist.

I keep hearing that the economy is improving, but I think that is mainly happening on Wall Street. Here on Main Street it's still awfully difficult to find a job, and we still have many, many Warren County residents looking to us for help.  I am afraid that a lot of our families will be sitting in the cold and dark come April.

I have attached the letter that went out to households, and the press release that was sent to the newspapers. However, nothing – NOTHING – beats an appeal from the pulpit. Every time I turn to area pastors for help, we see a dramatic increase in donations. PLEASE urge your church members to give to Agape. Even small donations count.

If someone did not get a letter they can still give by sending a check to Agape Ministry, 713 Powell, Warrenton, MO 63383, or by calling in a credit card number to 636-456-4645
