Alexandria, MN, Mar. 22, 2011 - On March 18-19, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) gave those braving the tail-end of a Minnesota winter something to get enthused about—its second Regional Outreach Conference (ROC). Held at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria, this two-day event—like LHM's first ROC a month earlier in Phoenix—exceeded attendance expectations with more than 400 people registering.

| So that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, and said to Moses, "The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do." So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, "Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more. Exodus 36:4-8 Although she didn't coin the expression, I can still hear my grandmother saying, "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys." Grandma was right. At least the Porsche car company is hoping she was right. You see, Porsche has designed a car which tops out at 199 miles per hour and gets 78 miles per gallon. Now before you go out and order one, you should know the price of this new super-vehicle is $845,000. $845,000 ... that's a lot of money. You know, when I was a parish pastor, every once in a while somebody would suggest the church should sell all it has and give the cash to the poor. Well, today it's my turn. To all of you who just decided you were going to run right out and buy one or two of these new Porsches, might I suggest you stop and maybe give that money to the poor ... or your church ... or Lutheran Hour Ministries? And for those of you who laugh at the idea of dropping $845,000 for a car, well, I'd encourage you to do what you can. In the Old Testament when the tabernacle was being built, people gave what they could and there was more than enough for the task. In the Gospels, when Jesus saw the widow put her two very valuable mites into the temple offering trumpets, He praised her selfless action. In the Epistles, Paul commends the Philippians who gave what they could -- and more than they actually were able. The truth is large gift or small, God can use the grateful donations His people present in thanksgiving to the Savior who gave His life for their redemption. Of course, you knew that already, but I just wanted to remind the folks who are looking to buy one of those Porsche super-cars. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, when it came to winning my salvation, You held nothing back. Now may we, in appreciation for Your suffering, death and resurrection, respond as we are able and the Holy Spirit moves. In Your Name. Amen. |

AGAPE DESPERATELY NEEDS OUR HELP!!!!
Agape Ministry needs your help. We have just mailed out the letter for our annual campaign. We desperately need this campaign to do well. Our goal is $30,000, which is the same it has been for 3 years. Unfortunately, we have lost $175,000 in grant funding over the last 3 years.
Agape has two food pantries: one in Warrenton and one in Wright City. We feed about 1,200 people every month out of the food pantries. In addition we help many more with one-time, emergency payments of rent or utilities as needed to avoid homelessness.
Last year at this time we had spend $22,000 helping people avoid homelessness. This year we haven't even spent $6,500. I wish I could say this was due to reduced demand, but in fact the demand is higher than ever. What's been reduced is funding. If your church distributes benevolent funds you have probably noticed an increase in requests and an increase in the number of people saying that Agape could not help.
In previous years we had the proceeds from the sale of 70 percent Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits and a grant from the Missouri Housing Trust Fund. This year we were rejected in our application to both of those sources. We then applied for a grant to the Missouri Foundation for Health, but they also rejected us. The State rejected us because they have their own money troubles. The MFH rejected us because they say our focus is not health related. The three combined equal $175,000. All of this would have been used to prevent homelessness in Warren County.
If you have been to our thrift store lately you know we have been blessed with success there. Those proceeds keep our doors open and buy food for our pantries. Donations from your churches also go to buy food. What we're missing – what we need to raise – is money to prevent homelessness. Right now the electric companies cannot disconnect people for unpaid bills because the Cold Weather Rule is in effect. But as it warms up that rule will expire, and I am very concerned about what people will do if we have no funds to assist.
I keep hearing that the economy is improving, but I think that is mainly happening on Wall Street. Here on Main Street it's still awfully difficult to find a job, and we still have many, many Warren County residents looking to us for help. I am afraid that a lot of our families will be sitting in the cold and dark come April.
I have attached the letter that went out to households, and the press release that was sent to the newspapers. However, nothing – NOTHING – beats an appeal from the pulpit. Every time I turn to area pastors for help, we see a dramatic increase in donations. PLEASE urge your church members to give to Agape. Even small donations count.

DEVOTION:
Then He (Jesus) opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His Name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem." Luke 24:45-47
Keith Gruber of Swan Lake, New York, has a tough time with the idea of repentance.
Last December 27th he was arrested in the community of Liberty. Driving while intoxicated was the charge.
Gruber was eventually let out on $30,000 bail with the understanding he would appear before the judge for his trial.
He kept his promise. True, Gruber arrived at court about an hour and a half late, and when he got there he was drunk, and he was carrying an open can of Busch beer, and he had four unopened cans in his bag -- cans which set off the metal detector when he entered the county courthouse.
When the judge asked Gruber if he had enjoyed his "liquid lunch," the reply was "yes." Gruber's short answer was followed by an apology. The judge can be excused for not thinking Gruber's repentance was all that sincere. Maybe that explains why Gruber found his bail revoked and the day ended up with him in jail.
Gruber is not alone in minimizing the importance of repentance. Today there are many churches that refuse to address the idea of sin or repentance.
This is a terribly sad and unscriptural thing to do.
The prophets preached repentance. John the Baptist called for repentant hearts. And although many people prefer to think Jesus was never judgmental and say the Savior accepted people without expecting or causing any change in their hearts, Scripture says differently.
That's why Jesus says repentance and forgiveness would be preached in His Name to the entire world.
It is God's will and wish that the Holy Spirit call us from what we were and then, having given us a repentant heart, begins the process of encouraging us to live as the Lord wants us to.
That's the way it's supposed to work, but sometimes those sins and shortcomings become so much a part of us we don't want to leave them behind.
This is just one more reason to repent, which I guess means we would be repenting of our unwillingness to repent.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks You have saved me through Jesus. Send the Holy Spirit so that this day I may leave behind all that would impede the relationship between us which You desire. This I ask in my Savior's Name. Amen.

Then He (Jesus) opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His Name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem." Luke 24:45-47
Keith Gruber of Swan Lake, New York, has a tough time with the idea of repentance.
Last December 27th he was arrested in the community of Liberty. Driving while intoxicated was the charge.
Gruber was eventually let out on $30,000 bail with the understanding he would appear before the judge for his trial.
He kept his promise. True, Gruber arrived at court about an hour and a half late, and when he got there he was drunk, and he was carrying an open can of Busch beer, and he had four unopened cans in his bag -- cans which set off the metal detector when he entered the county courthouse.
When the judge asked Gruber if he had enjoyed his "liquid lunch," the reply was "yes." Gruber's short answer was followed by an apology. The judge can be excused for not thinking Gruber's repentance was all that sincere. Maybe that explains why Gruber found his bail revoked and the day ended up with him in jail.
Gruber is not alone in minimizing the importance of repentance. Today there are many churches that refuse to address the idea of sin or repentance.
This is a terribly sad and unscriptural thing to do.
The prophets preached repentance. John the Baptist called for repentant hearts. And although many people prefer to think Jesus was never judgmental and say the Savior accepted people without expecting or causing any change in their hearts, Scripture says differently.
That's why Jesus says repentance and forgiveness would be preached in His Name to the entire world.
It is God's will and wish that the Holy Spirit call us from what we were and then, having given us a repentant heart, begins the process of encouraging us to live as the Lord wants us to.
That's the way it's supposed to work, but sometimes those sins and shortcomings become so much a part of us we don't want to leave them behind.
This is just one more reason to repent, which I guess means we would be repenting of our unwillingness to repent.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks You have saved me through Jesus. Send the Holy Spirit so that this day I may leave behind all that would impede the relationship between us which You desire. This I ask in my Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! Psalm 38:21-22
For some time now the world has been watching the great nation of Japan as she tried to dig her way out of the rubble caused by catastrophic earthquakes. You've seen how the news media has been preoccupied with that story and, as a result, other stories -- so-called smaller stories -- have not received much in the way of attention.
One of those stories is that of seven-year-old Oliver Prescott.
A week or so ago, Prescott was playing in the schoolyard across the street from his home ... the home where his mother was shoveling snow. When his mom looked up, he was gone. Knowing her son never left the park, mom quickly enlisted her sister and they began knocking on doors.
Oliver Prescott was nowhere to be found.
The only clue they had came from a neighbor who remembered the snow plow had cleared the school playground right about the time Prescott had disappeared.
With that information, two other neighbors -- brothers -- grabbed their shovels and started digging into the drifts piled up by the snowplow. After 45 minutes of furious shoveling, the men spotted the boy's hat, then his boot. The unconscious lad, the child who had been buried for three hours, was dragged from the snowdrift.
Now there's no point in going on with this devotion until I share that Oliver is doing just fine. He was revived, taken to the hospital and released later that day.
With that out of the way, it occurs to me that life has a way of blindsiding us. It may be an earthquake which devastates a country or a snowplow which unwittingly buries a little boy, life is full of unpleasant, unexpected and unwanted surprises.
They're surprises which ought to remind us that we should join our voices to that of King David who prayed, "Lord, don't forsake me ... don't get too far away from me ... make haste to help me ... because You are the God of my salvation."
David had discovered something which the Lord knew all along: we need Him. It's a fact we should not forget.
Now I don't know what surprise may be headed your way: Snowplow? Earthquake? Possibly something in between? Whatever that surprise might be, I encourage you to look to the Lord. He who gave His Son to save your soul will be there to provide help and assistance in this new and surprising situation.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today my prayer is that of David: "Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord of my salvation." In Jesus' Name. Amen.

LUTHERAN MALARIA INITIATIVE IS THE MISSION FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH
Hundreds of people are infected with and die from the dreaded disease of malaria. Malaria is easily preventable and also curable, but many folks cannot afford either the injections or the mosquito nets that are necessary. Our LCMS congregations are all working together to provide the necessary things for these people. Please give to this very worthwhile cause!

St. John's Group Email FW: from Sandy Robine: Prayer request!
For a prayer of thanksgiving for the birth of a healthy baby boy to Pastor & Mrs. (Lisa Radtke) Sam Powell. His name is Elliott James Powell, born today, March 23 at 7:58 AM by C-Section in Columbia, MO. "Little" Elliott weighed in at 9 lbs. 10 oz. and is 21-3/4" tall. Mother and baby are doing great. So is Dad.
Sam is the Associate Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, MO. Sam is a 2010 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Sam & Lisa were our "tenants" (adopted kids) for 4 years while Sam was attending the Sem.
I have added several folks on the "cc" line here that know Sam &/or Lisa so they can share in this good news.

DEVOTION: And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Genesis 1:28
Bald eagles. I must have been around 30 years old before I saw my first bald eagle in the wild.
Today all of my grandchildren have had the joy of seeing those majestic, soaring birds. Once near extinction, the return of the bald eagle to our skies is one of the great environmental success stories of our time.
According to John Rayfield of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it's a success story that at least one person in Tennessee doesn't want to see continued.
Do I hear you ask, "Who is this person?" I don't know who he is, but the Fish and Wildlife Service is looking for the fellow who, more than 100 miles north of Nashville, shot two bald eagles. Did I say looking for this fellow? Actually, they're paying a $17,000 reward for information leading to this fellow's arrest.
And if you're wondering what will happen if the man is convicted of eaglecide? He faces fines up to $100,000 and a year in federal prison. The penalty is high because the government takes a dim view of people killing our national bird.
I don't think the Lord is too keen on the idea either. Killing bald eagles is probably not what He had in mind when He told us to have dominion over the birds of the heavens -- dominion, yes; extinction, no.
Sadly, humankind has a tendency to mess up the Lord's gifts. We have a tendency to misuse, mistreat and despoil them.
Nowhere is that more evident than in the way the world has dealt with the Savior.
If it is a tragedy to kill two bald eagles, what can be said about murdering and rejecting the sinless Son of God who came into this world to save us?
That is, of course, what many people have done and what they continue to do.
It is a great tragedy -- a tragedy far greater than the murder of some great birds.
This is why, today, I would ask you to join with me in asking that hearts be made open to the Savior who lived, died and rose so we might be forgiven and saved. Let us ask the Lord to touch lost souls so they may appreciate His many gifts and especially Jesus, God's great gift of grace.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have commented that our hearts are evil, evil from when we are young (see Genesis 8:21). Left to our own devices, we are and would remain, lost. In spite of the wretched sinners we are, You have not changed. You still love us and desire to save us. To that end You sent Your Son to be our Substitute and Sacrifice. Today we ask the Lord that the lost be brought to faith and we pray all of us may be appreciative of all Your great gifts. In the Name of Jesus we ask it. Amen.

Lutheran Day at Busch Stadium is coming up quick! It is Saturday, April 2. The game starts at 3:10pm. Denise Schlesselman has volunteered to drive the church bus for all who wish to go. Tickets are $20 for the left field pavillion seats. It is opening weekend and the first 12,000 kids 15 and under will receive a free 28" (that is full size if you were wondering) Rawlings bat. Sign up ont eh sign up sheet on the bulletin board across from the church office or just all the church office and we'll sign you up. LUTHERAN MALARIA INITIATIVE IS THE MISSION FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH
Hundreds of people are infected with and die from the dreaded disease of malaria. Malaria is easily preventable and also curable, but many folks cannot afford either the injections or the mosquito nets that are necessary. Our LCMS congregations are all working together to provide the necessary things for these people. Please give to this very worthwhile cause!

St. John's Group Email FW: Capacity Crowd Inspired, Energized, and Equipped to Share God's Love at LHM's ROC-Alexandria
Earlier this month I asked you all if there was anyone who would like to attend a conference with me on May 13 and 14 in Branson. They just had one of these conferences in Minnesota and the email below is a recap of what happened at the conference. Again, if anyone would want to go please let me know.

DEVOTION: When the days drew near for Him to be taken up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem. Luke 9:51
Communities and countryside have been devastated by earthquake and a tsunami.
That one-two punch was followed up by the announcement that some of the nation's super-safe nuclear reactors were on fire, spewing stuff -- maybe radioactive stuff -- into the air.
At first the warnings were mild, then they became less so. Authorities told the people to evacuate their homes. Then when the fallout increased, those who had remained were ordered to stay inside. Things really became scary when experts went on TV and started to use words like "meltdown" and "catastrophic explosion."
Such language can strike terror into any human heart. It didn't take long before the Japanese people took to the road. Everybody did all they could to put as many miles as possible between themselves and the radiation-bleeding reactors.
Did I say everybody?
That's not quite right. About 180 workers at the Fukushima Daiichi plant have chosen to stay there and do what they could to stop further damage and destruction.
Now you should know, the people of Japan have always encouraged individuals to make personal sacrifices for the greater good of the community. Even so, the commitment of these men and women is already being hailed as an amazing act of bravery.
Radiation sickness, future cancers, an early and painful death: these fearful prospects were set aside as these scientists did their best to save their country, their neighbors and their families.
Their actions remind me of the Savior. In the 9th chapter of Luke, the beloved physician wrote that Jesus "set His face to go to Jerusalem."
This also was a wonderful act of courage and commitment. While the scientists at Japan's nuclear reactor don't know what is going to happen, Jesus knew what would be His fate in Jerusalem. He knew His countrymen, rather than applauding Him, would plot His murder. He knew He would be beaten, spit on, whipped and nailed to a cross.
Even so, Jesus set His face toward Jerusalem.
It was there God's Son, our Savior, was destined to pay the price for our sins and die in our stead. It was a price He willingly paid. Carrying our sins, Jesus died the death we deserved. Three days later, at His resurrection, He showed to a disbelieving world that He had been successful and He had redeemed, rescued and restored us to the family of faith.
Now, because of what Jesus has done, all who believe on Him as their Savior are forgiven, saved and are promised heaven.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord and Savior, we know we did not earn or deserve the love You showed to us when You went to Jerusalem. Even as we give thanks for Your sacrifice and resurrection from the dead, we pray that others may see the wonders of Your love. This we ask in Your Name. Amen.
