DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 12:12-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves[a] or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts,[b] yet one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  When Jacob (Israel" pronounced his "blessings" upon is sons, what did he say about each of them?

Quiz:  Reuben the firstborn is unstable as water. You shall not have preeminence.    Simeon and  Levi weapons of violence are their swords'  In their anger they killed men, hamstrung oxen.  Cursed be their anger.  They will be scattered.     Judah Your brothers will praise you.  Your hands shall be on the neck of your enemies. Your father's sons shall bow down before you.    Zebulun shall dwell at the shores of the sea, he shall be haven for ships and his borders shall be at Sidon.    Issachar is a strong donkey crouching between the sheepfolds.  He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor.    Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel.  He shall be a serpent in the way, a viper  by the path that bites horses heels so that the rider falls backwards.    Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels.  Asher's food shall be rich and he shall yield delicacies.   Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears beautiful fawns.     Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring. His branches run over the wall. The archers  bitterly attacked him, and harassed him severely yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob.    Benjamin is a ravenous wolf in the morning devouring the prey and at evening dividing the spoils.  Genisis  49:1-27

ANOTHER GOOD IDEA ABOUT SUNDAY SCHEDULE!!!!

10:45 and MONDAY WORSHIP IS LIKE BIBLE STUDY AND WORSHIP ALL ROLLED INTO ONE!!

Even if you went to the 9am service, you won't be disappointed if you stay for the 10:45 service.  You can stay for the first part which includes a few songs, confession and absolution, and Bible readings/study; and then leave after the study/sermon time is done because you've already had communion.

Just a thought, especially if you aren't currently attending the Bible study on angels.

NEW MEMBER LUNCHEON JANUARY 27, AT NOON!!

We want to welcome all of the new members we received in 2018, and help them to feel at home at St. John's.  Please plan on attending the new member luncheon to do so, along with the new members, The RSVP sheet is on the counter in the narthex or you can call the church office to let us know you're coming.

SUMMARY OF LAST WEDNESDAY'S STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING

  1. We talked about our Mission Statement and made a few minor adjustments to it.  It is a work in progress.
  2. We talked about our strengths and weakness.  Our main strength is that we are founded and centered on God's Word and Sacraments.  That's what sets us apart and makes us different than most other churches.
  3. Then we made some goals.  These are SMART goals meaning they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
    1. A 5% increase in Bible study attendance by the end of the year.
    2. Add two more adult Bible studies on Sunday morning or during the week by the end of the year.
    3. 10% increase in worship attendance from 2018 to 2019.
    4. Two additional community outreach events.

These are some great goals to shoot for!  The only way these things are going to happen and be done well is if the members of St. John's family get excited about their church family, get out and participate in them and do them.

All that being said, here are some steps to take to fulfill these goals as set forth:

  1. If anyone is willing to be a host, facilitator, or leader for a Bible study please contact me and we can talk about it.  I will give you all the tools and support you need!
  2. Get to worship and invite people to come with you.  It's as simple as that.
  3. If there is something you'd like to do in the community; whether it be outreach, evangelism, or fellowship please contact me to talk about it and, once again, I will give you all the tools, resources, and support you need.

We do, indeed, have a wonderful church family!  I am so proud of my family!  We do a lot of things in the community, at our jobs, and throughout the world.  We do have our faults, everyone does, but we can certainly tell that God is present in, with, and among us!  Go out and brag on your church family and get to work accomplishing these goals!

PRAYERS:

For MOLLY HENDERSHOT as she is still dealing with shortness off breath and weakness.  She will be going for more tests next week.

DEVOTION: Nehemiah 8:1-12 English Standard Version (ESV)

Ezra Reads the Law

And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites,[a] helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly,[b] and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

This Day Is Holy

And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, "Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved." 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

DAILY DEVOTION AND CHURCH NEWS: Thursday, Jan. 17, 2018

DEVOTION:  Luke 3:1-20 English Standard Version (ESV)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord,
[a]
    make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"

He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

10 And the crowds asked him, "What then shall we do?" 11 And he answered them, "Whoever has two tunics[b] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise." 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" 13 And he said to them, "Collect no more than you are authorized to do." 14 Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages."

15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.

Matthew 3:13-17 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,[a] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son,[b] with whom I am well pleased."

Matthew 4:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written,

"'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

"'He will command his angels concerning you,'

and

"'On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." 10 Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

"'You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.'"

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Are you in a conflict with a brother, sister, parent, spouse, or friend? Do you want to end that conflict and gain back loved ones and friends?  Do you want to mend fences and rebuild bridges?  Do you want to get rid of all the bitterness, anger, and resentment that you have toward others or that someone might have toward you?  Do you want to do what GOD wants you to do in your broken relationships, but you don't know where or how to start?

Ambassadors of Reconciliation has some great tools that will help to teach you and guide you through a process of doing just that at https://www.aorhope.org/ .

You can receive access to a free online course called "Conflict Resolution vs. Reconciliation"  at https://www.aorhope.org/aor-gift because I sponsored your scholarship. Simply go to that link to access this on-line course about biblical reconciliation. It is excellent.

I took a challenge to sponsor scholarships for several people at St. John's, because I want as many people as possible to take this course and learn to go and be reconciled to one another!  If you think it is helpful you can take the challenge yourself and nominate others!

Let me know if you take the course, so I can know how many people my donation has helped!
