DEVOTION: Romans 6:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.For one who has died has been set free[b] from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

DEVOTION:  Isaiah 43:1-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

Israel's Only Savior

43 But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
    he who formed you, O Israel:
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
    Cush and Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my eyes,
    and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
    peoples in exchange for your life.
Fear not, for I am with you;
    I will bring your offspring from the east,
    and from the west I will gather you.
I will say to the north, Give up,
    and to the south, Do not withhold;
bring my sons from afar
    and my daughters from the end of the earth,
everyone who is called by my name,
    whom I created for my glory,
    whom I formed and made."

DEVOTION:  Matthew 2:1-12 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem,saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

"'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who will shepherd my people Israel.'"

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

A MESSAGE ABOUT OUR NEW WORSHIP SCHEDULE

The Lord is going to make 2019 the best year yet for St. John's and its members!  He is going to make you more faithful in worship and Bible study!  He's going to bring families together and make faiths stronger!  He is going to do great things!

If you're going to ask the Lord to help you do anything better in 2019, ask him to make you more faithful in keeping the Sabbath, and growing in His knowledge!  Ask him to grow your faith!  Ask him to make you a more forgiving and loving person.  Ask him to make you more disciplined in those areas of your life where you lack self control.  Ask him to make you stop being so judgmental and more able to overlook and forgive the faults of others.  Ask him to make you a more faithful witness to his love!

Here's the schedule hour by hour:

Sunday—

8am- Adult Bible Study on Genesis

9am- Traditional Worship

10:15- Fellowship (Donuts and coffee), Adult Bible Class on Angels (This Bible study will continue during the 10:45 service), and Kid's Sunday school (half hour long)

10:45- Chapel Worship (Small children will begin with their parents in the sanctuary and end with a kid friendly activity in the Sunday school area.)

Monday- 6:30- Chapel Worship (We don't have any volunteers to help with young children yet, but if we get volunteers, small children will begin with their parents in the sanctuary for worship and end with a kid friendly activity in the fellowship area/overflow)

Description of the differences in Chapel Worship as compared to Traditional Worship-

  1. The songs will mostly be from videos or easier songs that are led by pastor.
  2. Instead of having Old Testament, Epistle, and Gospel readings, we will be learning the stories of the Bible.  On Jan. 6 we will start with the stories of the Wise men, Simeon and Anna, and the escape to Egypt.  If you go faithfully to this service every week you will eventually know all the major stories of the Bible.
  3. After going through the first half of worship with their whole family and getting an overview of the stories for the day, the youngest children will go next door to the fellowship room/overflow to do an activity to help them learn the main story of the day a little better.  The rest of us will dig deeper a bit deeper into the stories of the day and have communion together.

First Impact is a traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri's Graduated Driver License (GDL) law as well as provides them with the tools they need to monitor, coach and support their new teen driver.

Missouri GDL law is a three-step licensing system. The purpose is to ease teens into licensure so that they can build skill in an environment that minimizes those things that are shown to cause the greatest risk for new drivers.   Research confirms that GDL laws have been instrumental in reducing teen crashes by 20 percent to 40 percent.

First Impact offers a FREE 90-minute evidence-based traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri's GDL law. The goal of First Impact is to reduce new driver crashes, resulting injuries and fatalities, by increasing parental awareness and enforcement of Missouri's Graduated Driver License law.

Objectives of the program are to increase:

Awareness of teen driving risks

Understanding of Missouri's GDL law

GDL monitoring and enforcement at home

Importance of being a positive role model

The program is delivered by trained speakers who coach parents by presenting key facts and proven strategies to help parents lower their teens' crash risk by utilizing the Missouri GDL law.   Warrenton's session will be presented by James Baker, Wright City High School and Tim McDaniel, Conservation Agent, Missouri Conservation Department.
