A Message of Hope

But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:23-24

One of the places where the contrast between Lutherans and other denominations is most stark is at funerals. I was recently offering my condolences to a friend after the death of his mother. This layman told me that he attended another funeral the same day as his mother's funeral and that it was the first non-Lutheran funeral he had attended in quite a while. He spoke about how comforting the funeral for his mother was because of the focus on Christ and how, sadly, the other funeral placed the focus on the deceased. I don't mention this as a source of boasting, but rather a reminder that the only comfort and encouragement we have to offer is Christ and Him crucified and risen again from the grave.

It is certainly challenging for our congregations to reach the lost in our communities. For many of them, the Church has nothing to offer. They see the Church as out-of-touch with the world today. But funerals provide the opportunity for us to show exactly what the Church has to offer: Jesus. The effects of sin are on display for all to see as a casket stands before the assembly. But there is a message of hope that the Church has to offer as the pastor proclaims Christ's victory over sin and death. This is the message of hope that is proclaimed in cities where the murder rates continue to escalate. We proclaim this message at nursing homes and day-care centers. We do have something to say and it is about Jesus!

Pastors are not called to be cool or hip. They are not called to follow the latest trends or to tell people what they want to hear. They are called to preach Christ crucified! But we can't sit around and wait for the next funeral to bring the unchurched back into the congregation. Pastors are teaching and equipping God's people to be faithful witnesses who intentionally go out into their communities with a message of hope. Pastors preach that message from the pulpit, but laypeople speak that message over coffee with co-workers and over drinks with friends. The Church still has a message and there is an urgency for the saints of God to proclaim Christ and Him crucified wherever we live and move and have our being. May we be faithful witnesses as we keep Christ crucified and risen again as our central message.

Prayer – Savior of the nations, come and inspire Your people to be faithful witnesses to Your great salvation. The harvest is indeed plentiful and the laborers few, so begin with me, Lord, and hold before my eyes the challenges and the needs of a world without Christ. Never let me wear of proclaiming the crucified and risen Christ. Amen.

Fraternally in Christ,

President Lee Hagan

DEVOTION:  John 10:11-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father."

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ     What did David order be done that caused a three day plague of death to sweep across Israel?

From Pat King:  I've been taking care of my sick dog. But since Don can't answer, here goes: Basically, he conducted a census. Which would have been okay, if they had just followed God's rules regarding censuses. But, of course, they didn't. Here's 2 articles about it:

DEVOTION:  1 John 3:16-24 English Standard Version (ESV)

16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

Enjoy!
