DEVOTION:  Romans 5:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)

Peace with God Through Faith

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith[b] into this grace in which we stand, and we[c]rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

I hope you understand from this that God the Father does not hold anything against you.  You are at peace with him.  And as long as you remain in faith and believe that Jesus died on the cross for you, he will continue to have nothing against you.  He will always forgive you and love you.

                You know when you are truly "at peace" with someone, how you want to show them you love them and care for them?  Don't you do the things that they he or she likes you to do?  Don't you try to make them happy?

                Think about what happens to you and to your heart when you truly believe and receive God's forgiveness and love.  It changes you, doesn't it?  Doesn't the realization that all of your sins are forgiven for all eternity give you a new and better perspective on life?  Doesn't it make you want to go and forgive others the same way God has forgiven you?  Doesn't it make you want to live a life that is pleasing to God and that honors him?  Doesn't it make you want to get rid of the sin and stay away from temptations as much as possible?  Doesn't it make you want to acknowledge him in every part of your life?  Doesn't it make you want to surrender to him out of love and honor and let him have his way with your life?

                Make no mistake.  God has truly sent His Son into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst.  Christ died for you while you were still his enemy.  He turned you from his enemy into his child.   The Father sent the Son, and the Son accomplished everything the Father sent him to do.  It has all been done for you.  How you live your life and how people see you is a response to God's never ending love and forgiveness for you!  Trust in his real and true forgiveness and love and let it take you over, body and soul!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for dying for me even though I was your enemy.  Thank you for giving me forgiveness and life through holy baptism and through faith.   Help me to trust in your love for me more each day so that my whole life may honor you and witness to your love.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 English Standard Version (ESV)

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly." Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham,[c] for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

15 And God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah[a] shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give[b] you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.

Every three years this reading comes up after the reading we had last week about Abraham's almost sacrifice of his son, Isaac.  I don't know why it comes after it, but I'm sure the guys who put the lectionary together had a reason.  Maybe it was as a reminder of why God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son.

            What I mean by that is this.  God needed Abraham to know that He was the most important person in his life.  It wouldn't be Isaac.  What happens to a lot of parents is that their kids become idols.  They become THE most important thing to them.  Contrary to popular belief, your kids aren't the most important person to you.  God is!

            Don't get carried away here.  I'm not saying that your kids aren't important.  What I am saying is that there needs to be a distinctive order.  You can't put your kids above God.  For instance, God says bring your kids to church.  You say, but my kids have soccer on Sunday, or my son is so tired and he really likes to sleep in on Sunday.  Do you get what I mean?  What is most important to you? Sure, you can worship God anywhere, but what does the Lord say in his commandment?  Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.

            Sure, give your kids every opportunity afforded to them.  Help them to succeed in everything, but don't do it in spite of their faith.  Don't do it in spite of their relationship with the Lord.  All of us parents, including myself, have something to repent of when it comes to this.

            This Sunday I am going to have a meeting with as many parents and kids as will show up.  It is going to be a time that we get together to discuss the faith of our children and what we can do to help to increase that faith.  If you are a parent of a kids 0-18 I expect you to be there for this meeting.  Please RSVP TODAY so I know you'll be there!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me my children as a gift.  Help me to treat them as gifts from you and not as idols.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 22:23-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted[a] shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.

Just when you think you've had enough, the Lord God reminds you that the best is yet to come.  It is so easy to get worn down, disappointed, disillusioned, and distraught by all the things going on in this world, not to mention one's own sins, shortcomings, and failures. It is so easy to get caught up in the negativity and anger that keeps going around.  I know I have been caught up in it from time to time.  Then, you are reminded who is in control and that he will work everything out for our good and his glory.

        It is very simply put here in this Psalm. 26 The afflicted[a] shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord!  May your hearts live forever!?  Are you fed up with the rat race of life and just need some real rest? Are you dealing with problem after problem of which there seems to be no real answer?   If so, have you sought answers in him yet?  Have you looked to him for hope and peace?  Instead of searching everywhere else, instead of looking to the created things for your hope, why not turn to the creator?  Put your trust, hope, and joy in him today.

        I have to admit, I've been pretty down lately, especially with the shooting down in Parkland, FL.  It is good to know that I can still put my hope in the Lord and know that I will not be disappointed.  It is a wonderful thing to know that when everything else and everyone else fails me, or when I fail everyone, God will never fail.  He has already wont he war!  Satan may not know it yet, because he is still trying to get people to his side, but the strife is over and the battle is done.  Don't give up!  Don't give in!  You will receive a crown that will never spoil or fade away.  You will eat and forever be satisfied.  You will drink and never be thirsty.  Live in that peace today and always.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for picking up my spirits today.  Help me to know that I am with you every step of the way.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  When the Israelites went in to conquer the Promised Land, what were they to do with the current inhabitants and their possessions?  What did they do instead?  What happened just as the Lord said it would?

Don Nolte- They were to destroy all the inhabitants and their property.   They left the people live and made them their servants.  They began to worship their idols and were finally overtaken by their enemies and held in captivity until they returned to the true God.

For GEORGE HOESCHER, GINA BOHNING (Roy Bohning's wife), and BUCK HAMPTON,  as they continue to deal with cancer.

PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL:

For COLTON FIGURA deployed to Turkey, SAM HARGROVE deployed in Kuwait and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

For CALEB FIGURA AND VINCE MASTERS who are both serving our country in the National Guard and take time out of their lives, jobs, and families to go on duty several times a year.
