DEVOTION: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 English Standard Version (ESV)

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly." Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham,[c] for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

15 And God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah[a] shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give[b] you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.

Every three years this reading comes up after the reading we had last week about Abraham's almost sacrifice of his son, Isaac.  I don't know why it comes after it, but I'm sure the guys who put the lectionary together had a reason.  Maybe it was as a reminder of why God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son.

            What I mean by that is this.  God needed Abraham to know that He was the most important person in his life.  It wouldn't be Isaac.  What happens to a lot of parents is that their kids become idols.  They become THE most important thing to them.  Contrary to popular belief, your kids aren't the most important person to you.  God is!

            Don't get carried away here.  I'm not saying that your kids aren't important.  What I am saying is that there needs to be a distinctive order.  You can't put your kids above God.  For instance, God says bring your kids to church.  You say, but my kids have soccer on Sunday, or my son is so tired and he really likes to sleep in on Sunday.  Do you get what I mean?  What is most important to you? Sure, you can worship God anywhere, but what does the Lord say in his commandment?  Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.

            Sure, give your kids every opportunity afforded to them.  Help them to succeed in everything, but don't do it in spite of their faith.  Don't do it in spite of their relationship with the Lord.  All of us parents, including myself, have something to repent of when it comes to this.

            This Sunday I am going to have a meeting with as many parents and kids as will show up.  It is going to be a time that we get together to discuss the faith of our children and what we can do to help to increase that faith.  If you are a parent of a kids 0-18 I expect you to be there for this meeting.  Please RSVP TODAY so I know you'll be there!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me my children as a gift.  Help me to treat them as gifts from you and not as idols.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 22:23-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted[a] shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.

Just when you think you've had enough, the Lord God reminds you that the best is yet to come.  It is so easy to get worn down, disappointed, disillusioned, and distraught by all the things going on in this world, not to mention one's own sins, shortcomings, and failures. It is so easy to get caught up in the negativity and anger that keeps going around.  I know I have been caught up in it from time to time.  Then, you are reminded who is in control and that he will work everything out for our good and his glory.

        It is very simply put here in this Psalm. 26 The afflicted[a] shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord!  May your hearts live forever!?  Are you fed up with the rat race of life and just need some real rest? Are you dealing with problem after problem of which there seems to be no real answer?   If so, have you sought answers in him yet?  Have you looked to him for hope and peace?  Instead of searching everywhere else, instead of looking to the created things for your hope, why not turn to the creator?  Put your trust, hope, and joy in him today.

        I have to admit, I've been pretty down lately, especially with the shooting down in Parkland, FL.  It is good to know that I can still put my hope in the Lord and know that I will not be disappointed.  It is a wonderful thing to know that when everything else and everyone else fails me, or when I fail everyone, God will never fail.  He has already wont he war!  Satan may not know it yet, because he is still trying to get people to his side, but the strife is over and the battle is done.  Don't give up!  Don't give in!  You will receive a crown that will never spoil or fade away.  You will eat and forever be satisfied.  You will drink and never be thirsty.  Live in that peace today and always.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for picking up my spirits today.  Help me to know that I am with you every step of the way.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  When the Israelites went in to conquer the Promised Land, what were they to do with the current inhabitants and their possessions?  What did they do instead?  What happened just as the Lord said it would?

Don Nolte- They were to destroy all the inhabitants and their property.   They left the people live and made them their servants.  They began to worship their idols and were finally overtaken by their enemies and held in captivity until they returned to the true God.

DEVOTION:  Mark 1:9-15 English Standard Version (ESV)

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased."

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;[b] repent and believe in the gospel."

While other Gospel writers, and by other Gospel writers I mean Matthew, Luke, and John would take a little more time to tell these three stories, Mark takes care of Jesus' baptism, temptation and the beginning of his ministry all in six verses.  .  The word "immediately" pops up over and over again in Mark's Gospel.  You might say that he sees the urgency with which Christ came on the scene.

            It is with that same urgency that Christ comes into your life.  He came at your baptism with a rush of water and his own words poured into you.  He came with His Word piercing your ears with the condemning law and then the soul saving Gospel.  He comes to you through your friends and family who care for you and love you in spite of your flaws and failures.      And he comes with urgency through you as well.  He comes through you as you see your neighbor hurting and you walk next door to help and console.  He comes through you as you give your monetary gifts to one urgent need after another.  He comes urgently through you as you love your kids and take care of their needs one by one as your Lord has given you the privilege, responsibility, strength, and love to do so. He comes through you urgently as you go and be reconciled to those who have hurt you and those whom you have hurt.

            The whole world is in urgent need of Jesus.  The folks down in Parkland, Florida are in desperate need of Jesus right now!  When Satan oppresses and young man like this so that this man can commit such evil, it looks like Satan is winning, but the urgent message is that the Lord God has already won the war.  The strife is over!  The battle is done!  Christ has had the last word.

            I wanted to say something about the school shooting yesterday, but I really don't know what to say, except, evil is real and the only solution is Jesus.  Love everyone around you today with the love of Jesus!  If you see someone struggling with anger, or they don't seem to be able to control their emotions without having to act out, or they can't control their thoughts, or you see something else that looks like a red flag to you.  Help them!  If you think someone is in real danger call 911!  Don't let anyone be alone!  There are lots of lonely people in this world who are only left with their thoughts.  Don't let that be!  That's why God has given us a community of believers called the church!  Well, I guess I did have something to say after all.  Pray for the people dealing with this tragedy and all people mourning the loss of loved ones today, and remind everyone you see today that CHRIST IS RISEN!  He is risen indeed! Amen.

Prayer: Help us to see the urgency of the Gospel message so that others may know you and believe.  Amen.

RETIREMENT SEMINARS AVAILABLE.  WHO IS INTERESTED?

Denny Hagan from eldercare associates would like to know how many people would be interested in attending one or more of the following seminars if he were to come out to St. John's to do them.

  1. Identity theft. With tax season coming, this is a serious concern to not only seniors, but to everybody that has a Social Security Number. As a matter of fact, the most profitable Information on the net, is for children. It takes much longer to catch the issue, due to lack of use of the children's numbers.

  1. Changes in how Medicare Part B, is billed to Seniors, It is more important than ever that one takes the time to plan their retirement. Medicare part B is billed based on one's income, and to make it even more confusing, it is based on your income of 2 years ago.  Now, before we start scaring anybody, If they are already receiving benefits, this new rule, will not apply. All of these rules, are changes in Social Security.

  1. Understanding Social Security: how to get all that is coming to you and making the most of it.

If anyone is interested in any of these, please let me know, and if we get enough people interested, we will get Denny to come out and do a presentation.
