2 Corinthians 3:12-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when one[a] turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord[b] is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,[c] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.[d] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God,[a] we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice[b] cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants[c] for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

This passage gives me comfort, especially as a pastor, because I truly understand that it is only the Holy Spirit, working through the Gospel, that gives real, true, and lasting growth.  My only jobs are to preach and teach God's Word, administer the Sacraments, and lead people to Christ.  After that I need to shut up and get out of the way.

Those who are obstinate, those who reject the Gospel, and those who have problems with God and all that he stands for, are the same ones who, when Moses came down the mountain with a glowing face, asked him to put a veil over it, because they couldn't stand to look at it. It was too much for tem and they didn't want to behold God.  They wanted a god who they could mold and shape and use for their own benefit.  They wanted a god who would fit into them and not the other way around.

"But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed."  There are so many people that I know that simply need to do this.  Maybe you are one of them.  Do you need a God whose glory is veiled or are you ready to take the veil off and see God for who he really is, your majestic Lord and Savior, your creator and redeemer, your boss, your master?  Are you ready to turn and fall at the feet of God?  I pray that you are and that you will continue to be so that God can show you his real, full glory, give you his forgiveness, and grow you in his grace!  So that you can really experience that peace that passes all understanding, so that you can get rid of that guilt you've been hanging on to, so that you can get rid of that bitterness and anger that you have against that certain person, so that you can move forward in faith and peace instead of looking back to the broken past.

Christ is risen!  He is risen indeed!  Alleluia!  Live and love in that truth!  Amen!

Prayer: Lord, may that peace, that only you can give and that passes all understanding, flow from you to us so that your glory may shine to us, in us, and through us.  Amen.

Exodus 34:29-35 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Shining Face of Moses

29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.[a] 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them.32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

34 Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

We often ask the question, why doesn't God just show himself to us?  Why doesn't he just reveal himself?  Wouldn't more people believe?  Wouldn't more people come to him?

Well, let's look at this passage as a good example of why he does things the way he does.  When Moses would meet with God his face would shine like the sun.  The people were terrified of it and they couldn't handle it so Moses would have to put on a veil to cover his face.  How crazy is that?  At the Transfiguration when Jesus face shone like the sun and the Father spoke from heaven, the disciples couldn't handle it.  They fainted.

Because of our sinful nature, we simply cannot handle God's full presence.  It would kill us.  We have a hard enough time with the ways he does come to us through the Word and the Sacraments.  Our finite minds and sinful hearts just can't handle it.  So God, who is merciful, instead comes to us in ways we can take.  They may not be as glorious a Moses on mount Sinai or Jesus at the Transfiguration, but they are just as real.  As God comes to you, remember to not take these things for granted, because, although his glory is muted and veiled, it is still him coming to you in water and word, in bread and wine, and in words written on a page and spoken by your brothers and sisters in Christ.  Take it to heart and believe it, and realize that, one day, you are going to see his shining face and be able to withstand that glory forever and ever!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me the veiled ways you do so that I may partake of your glory.  I can't wait for the day when I will be free from this sin and will be able to see your shining face.  Until that day, give me the patience and peace to endure and thrive in this world, that I may show your presence to others.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 50:1-6 English Standard Version (ESV)

God Himself Is Judge

A Psalm of Asaph.

50 The Mighty One, God the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
    God shines forth.

Our God comes; he does not keep silence;[a]
before him is a devouring fire,
    around him a mighty tempest.
He calls to the heavens above
and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
"Gather to me my faithful ones,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!"
The heavens declare his righteousness,
for God himself is judge! Selah

This is definitely a Psalm of judgment.  We don't like to think of God as a judge.  This, in fact, might be the number one reason that people don't want to believe in the God of Scriptures.  They think he is too cruel and that a loving God would never send people to hell.

Here's the problem with that logic.  He didn't create evil.  He gave Adam and Eve the free will to love him forever, or to go against him and his will, which is the only way that real love works, and they chose wrongly.  From that point on, there was no turning back.  Evil and good could not coexist.  He had to separate evil from good, and so he separated Adam and Eve from the garden and from himself.  Later on, when Jesus would show his glory in the Transfiguration, we would see that the showing of his real nature as God would be too much for the disciples to handle.  Good and evil cannot coexist.

At the last day, Jesus, the great judge, will do away with evil and those who choose evil, forever.  He will not accept anyone or anything that has not been cleansed and made holy, which includes those who have rejected his holiness and cleansing.

This is hard for anyone who thinks that there is no such thing as an absolute truth. It is also hard for people who want you to accept their behavior and their way of thinking even though God calls it sinful.  What God calls evil we cannot call good.  It just doesn't work.

Just remember that if God is truly God, then what he says goes.  We can reject what he says all we want, but that doesn't make us right.  Just the opposite, that makes us damned forever.

Is there something in your life that you are struggling with that needs your repentance?  Is there some way of life, some belief, or some behavior that God says is wrong but you disagree with God?  Who's going to change?  It isn't going to be God, so it has to be you!  Turn from your sinfulness, repent, and believe the good news, so that when the righteous judge comes, he may find you faultless and free, because he died on the cross for you.

Prayer: Lord God, you are the righteous judge.  Turn me, humble me, make me your child, your servant so that I may be found righteous when you return.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  When was the one time when there were too many offerings brought to the house of the Lord?

From Don Nolte-  Exodus chapter 36 Moses had to tell the people to stop ringing offering for the Tabernacie.

From Pat King- Again with the easy quizzes! So, Dec 31 – which is the very last day you can get a tax break for the filing season. No lie!

But actually, it was back in the days of Moses, when they were constructing the great tent. Exodus 36: 4-6

4And all the skillful men who were performing all the work of the sanctuary came, each from the work which he was performing, 5and they said to Moses, "The people are bringing much more than enough for the construction work which the LORD commanded us to perform." 6So Moses issued a command, and a proclamation was circulated throughout the camp, saying, "Let no man or woman any longer perform work for the contributions of the sanctuary." Thus the people were restrained from bringing any more.…
