DEVOTION: 1 Corinthians 7:29-35English Standard Version (ESV)

²⁹ This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, ³⁰ and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, ³¹ and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

³² I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. ³³ But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife,³⁴ and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. ³⁵ I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

 

Undivided devotion to the Lord, isn't that what we are all after?  We live in a very difficult world. Our interests, allegiances, and time are pulled in so many different directions.  Kids are taught that to be successful (whatever successful means), you have to be the best at whatever it is you do.  We can see this in youth sports.  Sports is no longer done simply for enjoyment.  It's used as a way to get ahead.  We can't just play a game anymore, we have to "excel" at it.  School is no longer just a place to learn, but a place to catapult you into your future endeavors.  If you don't get straight As and get that scholarship, then your life is worthless.

            In the middle of all this we've lost sight of what's important, our relationship with Almighty God.  People are pulled everywhere earthly while their spirits, their souls, are drying up from lack of attention and nurture. While they have to have all  everything that the world has to offer, they're fine with "still having faith" or "just believing" in Jesus.  They want to excel in everything else but their eternal relationship with Almighty God.  All the time they should have this mantra "Nothing matters but Jesus and Jesus makes all the difference."

            Now I'm not saying shoot for mediocrity.  I'm not saying that you shouldn't try.  What I am saying is that you need to get your priorities straight.  Your relationship with God should direct everything else you do in life, not the other way around.  And what I see in too many lives is that it is the other way around.  It is the tail wagging the dog.  We are majoring in minors. 

            It's time to repent!  In one sense Paul is saying that it is better not to be married, if that marriage is going to divide your time and energy.  On the other hand he is saying that it is good to get married, because that can enhance your relationship with God.  Your marriage should not put you in a bind.  It shouldn't take you away from your relationship with the Lord, but should always bring you back to the Lord!  Let your relationship with the Lord guide and direct your marriage.

            I encourage you to think about everything you do and the amount of money and time you spend on things.  What is getting in the way of your relationship with Jesus?  What is enhancing it?  Then change what needs to be changed.  I'm not saying quit your job, or make your kids quit the team, but realize that the only be all and end all of your life is your relationship with Jesus and how that relationship affects and directs everything else you do! 

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my everything.  Direct my life and all that I do so that it may please you and I may grow in your strength.  Amen.

For GEORGE HOELSCHER, BUCK HAMPTON, DENISE HOOKER (Betty Tameler's daughter) as they continue to deal with cancer.

For COLTON FIGURA deployed to Turkey, SAM HARGROVE deployed in Kuwait and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

 

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

DEVOTION: Jonah 3:1-5 English Standard Version (ESV)

Jonah Goes to Nineveh

3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,² "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you." ³ So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,^[a] three days' journey in breadth.^[b] 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" ⁵ And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.  ¹⁰ When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

 

Notice something here.  Jonah didn't tell them that if they repented, God would change his mind.  They weren't promised anything.  Yes, they were indeed hoping  that God would relent and not destroy them, but that isn't the reason they repented.  They repented in true sadness and grief over their sins.  

            Another thing to take note of is that God sees the heart.  He knew that their repentance wasn't just superficial.  It was real.  If they were just going through the motions God would not have had mercy on them.  

            In the same way, God sees your heart.  He knows the truth.  He knows if you're just going through the motions or if you are really repentant.  He knows if you're just sitting in the pew in obstinate unbelief or if you are truly hearing the law and gospel and believing in the forgiveness and grace of Christ.  

            Jonah didn't want to go to Nineveh first, because it was such an unbelieving and rotten city, and second, because he didn't think they deserved it.  God gave him a fig tree to sit under because of the shade, but then withered the fig tree in the middle of the day to show that he gives mercy on whom HE wants to give mercy.  

            A simple question for you today is, what kind of heart does God see in you, a believing and repentant one, or a hard, unbelieving and unrepentant one?  My prayer for  you is that you heed Jonah's and we'll see later this week, Jesus's call to repentance so that you may be spared and saved.  

 

Prayer: Lord God, you call me to repentance. Make me to heed that call so that I may live in peace today and live with you forever.  Amen.

FW: Join Us as We Pray for Our Nation on Religious Freedom Day

 

Join together with Dr. Greg Seltz at the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty and your fellow LCMS Lutherans in prayer for our nation on Religious Freedom Day, January 16, 2018.     A Call to Prayer for Our Nation Religious liberty. Life. Marriage. These are fundamental, foundational truths that make life worth living for all people. So, how come they are all deemed so "controversial" in the public square? Why can't you rejoice about such things, or just be thankful at the party, the family gathering, or the neighborhood picnic? When did life get reduced to talking about "the weather and sports…just to be safe?" (Even that's not safe today either, right?) But these topics matter. Why? Because people matter. And people matter to us as Lutheran believers because they matter to Jesus. We teach about these issues, communicating our points of view clearly and faithfully. We are working hard to open the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C., because we want to bear witness to Christ in the public square — even in a culture where many people don't want to hear about Him. Stand for the Truth because you love people! It's time. January and February are months where our nation celebrates liberty and life, fundamental truths that still matter in our culture. January 16 is Religious Freedom Day commemorating the principles that undergird the first amendment of our constitution. January 19 is the Pro-Life March in Washington D.C. where people from all walks of life, stand together for the sanctity of life for all people. And, February 1 is National Freedom Day, commemorating President Lincoln's freeing of the slaves and the passage of the 13th amendment. Religious liberty, life, marriage: these things mattered then and they matter now — not only for us, but also for our children and our grandchildren. So, please join with us at Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty and with your fellow LCMS Lutherans in prayer — for our churches, for our members, for our country, for her elected leaders. That, of course, is our joy and challenge, together, even in this intensely politically charged atmosphere: to remain faithful, to stay the course, to pray because people matter! But as you pray, remember that our Lord is at work before and after our prayers calling people to himself. He is the strength for us to pray. He is the power for us to be a voice for His gift of marriage or to speak for the value of the lives He creates. He remains with you. He is not absent. He is still at the helm, the head of the body, still leading, still guiding. As you pray, know that as Christians we are together bearing witness to Christ in and by all that we do. And now, as your Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty in Washington D.C., we are speaking that truth in the public square with you, for you, for our churches, schools and universities. In all we do together in Christ's name, we trust that God—in His perfect time and way—will work all things for His good! So please pray with us. Holy Father, as Your People, we turn to You, our mighty fortress, our refuge in every struggle and need. Our nation is confused about so many things, even those things that are fundamental to who we are as human beings created in your image to love as you have loved us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy! Show us the path of service so that we might encourage our elected leaders and those who have authority over us to be faithful in the vocations you have for them to do. Cause us to be uncompromising witnesses to Your will and Your ways, both in our homes and in the public square because your love, your truth truly set us free. Help us to proclaim in Christ the liberty and freedom that comes from the gift of forgiveness for every sin committed, every opportunity missed to speak the truth in love, every instance where we have remained silent. Give us a voice to speak for the unborn, the joy to lift up the gift of marriage and the willingness to speak on behalf of people of faith who are, even now, persecuted for their faith in You. We have no right to ask this of our own, save through the merits and mediation of Him whose blood atones for the sin of the whole world, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. How Can I Get Involved? My Soul Waits for God Alone

62 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
² He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

³ How long will all of you attack a man
    to batter him,
    like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
⁴ They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
    They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah

⁵ For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
⁶ He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
⁷ On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

If you live with someone or are just around someone long enough, you are going to be disappointed.  I am always wary of people who leave a church to come to my church because of the people at their former church, or even because of the pastor there, because I or someone within the church will disappoint them and they will leave here too.  I have a tendency to disappoint people, because guess what, I'm human!  Just ask Karin.  I disappoint her on a regular basis. 

 

We cannot put our trust in human beings without the understanding that every human being is sinful and will let us down at one point or another.  When this happens we have a choice to make.  We can either move on from that relationship and go on to the next one.  If you are prone to doing this, you'll find yourself doing it over and over again.  You can keep the bitterness, anger, and disappointment bottled up inside so that it is never dealt with.  Or, you can forgive it, either by overlooking it or by working through it to come to reconciliation.  I HIGHLY SUGGEST THE THIRD CHOICE!

 

As human Christians we can only completely trust God.  All others we can trust but verify or trust and forgive.  God will never let us down, disappoint us, or leave us.  He will and always has kept his promises.  I encourage you to look at all of your relationships closely.  Forgive those who have broken your trust.  Ask for forgiveness from those whose trust you have broken, and trust in the Lord to bring about His will in all of your relationships, especially the one you have with him. 

 

Prayer: Lord God, help me to trust in you alone and to treat all other relationship the way you treat me and my relationship with you. Amen.

I am in need of one or two more people who are interested in forming a "curriculum" for our adult Bible studies for this year.  Please reply to this email if you are interested!  We need more Bible studies and more people involved in them.

For PAT MANESS who is hospitalized after several falls last week.

 

For PAT JAEGER whose surgery was postponed due to high blood pressure issues.  

 

For PAUL TOEDEBUSCH as he continues to recover from a sprained his ankle and broke a bone in his leg.

 

   

For GEORGE HOELSCHER, BUCK HAMPTON, DENISE HOOKER (Betty Tameler's daughter) as they continue to deal with cancer.

 PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL:

For COLTON FIGURA deployed to Turkey, SAM HARGROVE deployed in Kuwait and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

 

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

 

For CALEB FIGURA AND VINCE MASTERS who are both serving our country in the National Guard and take time out of their lives, jobs, and families to go on duty several times a year.
