DEVOTION:  Psalm 46  English Standard Version (ESV)

God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth.[a] A Song.

46 God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!"
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

When you were a kid and you were afraid of something, and your mom was standing there, where would you go?  You would stand behind her and hide wouldn't you?  When I go up to little kids who don't know me, their first reaction is usually to run and hide behind mom or dad, or if dad is holding them, they bury their face in their chest.  They know that mom an dad will protect them.  They know that mom and dad are a fortress and a refuge from the big bad guy that's coming toward them.

     As we get older our refuges and fortresses change, but we still have them.  Some of them are ok and some of them are not ok.  Some of us turn to food for comfort.  Others turn to drugs or alcohol as a refuge.  Still others turn to their work.  What is your refuge?

     I've turned to both good and bad things at times for refuge and strength, but there's no better refuge or fortress than God Almighty and His living and active Words of promise that are found in Scripture.  There is no other refuge and strength, no other fortress that will work perfectly or last forever like God will.

     I urge you to turn to God and His Word alone for your refuge from this big bad world and as a fortress when the devil is attacking you.  Turn to the things that God uses to reach you, namely His Word and Sacraments when you are tempted to sin; when you are neck deep in concerns, frustration, and trouble;  when you are experiencing deep loss and sorrow.  Turn to God's promise of salvation, because there will come a day when all of this sorrow, pain, suffering, doubt, and temptation will end, and then you will have God with you face to face in the flesh!  Until then remember that God is your refuge and strength and he is your mighty fortress!!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for always being there for me to run to so I can bury my face in your chest and hide from Satan behind you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:

What was the "sign" to Zechariah that John the Baptist would be born to him and Elizabeth?  He was unable to speak until John the Baptist was born.  Luke 1:20 (Thanks Don!)

Or here's Pat King's answer:  This is so easy, even I couldn't stop and take a moment to answer. Elizabeth's expanding waistline! Well, duh! Plus the fact that he was struck "dumb" – couldn't speak - until after the kid was born. This made for really, really short sermons, and a HUGE increase in church attendance. Just saying.

DEVOTION:  Matthew 22:15-22 English Standard Version (ESV)

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" 21 They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

In Luther's teaching, as well as our still today, there are two kingdoms, the kingdom of the right and the kingdom of the left, or as we might say it the earthly kingdom of law and justice and the heavenly kingdom of mercy and grace.  God rules in both kingdoms.  He provides for good order, justice, and the basic communal needs of the people such as roads, judges, etc.  He has established government for our good and we must honor it according to his will.  Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" isn't just something Jesus said to get out of trouble with the Pharisees, he did it, because God can even use a corrupt government to do his will and if we owe taxes we must pay taxes.

        Of course, if the government is going against God's will in one or more areas we must disagree with it and do everything we can to change those things, abortion and same sex marriage are both examples of where the government clearly goes against what Scripture says, and has made things legal that God has spoken against as sinful.  So we speak up and we protest against these things.  At the same time, where the government is clearly not going against God's will we support it and honor it as Luther in his explanation to the fourth commandment clearly states, "We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them."

Prayer: Lord, thank you for keeping order on this earth and providing for our earthly needs.  Amen.
