DEVOTION:   Isaiah 56:1English Standard Version (ESV)

Salvation for Foreigners

56 Thus says the Lord:
"Keep justice, and do righteousness,
for soon my salvation will come,
    and my righteousness be revealed

6. "And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
    to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
    and to be his servants,
everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
    and holds fast my covenant—
these I will bring to my holy mountain,
    and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
    will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
    for all peoples."
The Lord God,
    who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
"I will gather yet others to him
    besides those already gathered."

Do you think that only good people go to church, or that only people who are like you?  Well, you're right if you think of yourself as being a foreigner, an outcast, and a sinner.

You heard me right.  That's who God wants in his church!  He wants those that the world considers foreigners and outcasts.  It doesn't matter if you're white, black, Asian, Native American, or all black and blue.  It doesn't matter if you are thought of highly by everyone or thought of as the lowest scum of the earth.  It doesn't matter what you have or haven't accomplished in your life.  God wants you!

He doesn't "need" you.  He wants you!  He doesn't "need" your money.  He wants you, and your money, and your family, and your hardships, and your successes, and your failures, and your secret sins, and EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU!  He wants you!

Have you been keeping yourself from worship lately?  It's not ok if you are.  In fact, it is a sin against the 3rd commandment.  Repent!  Come back to the Lord's house!  Worship Him and find your joy and satisfaction in him!

Lord, help me to always treat your house of prayer as holy and as a place for ALL people to gather around you, your Word, and your Sacraments so that I may be refreshed and blessed.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 67English Standard Version (ESV)

Make Your Face Shine upon Us

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

67 May God be gracious to us and bless us
    and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
that your way may be known on earth,
    your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you!

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
    for you judge the peoples with equity
    and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you!

The earth has yielded its increase;
    God, our God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us;
    let all the ends of the earth fear him!

What does it mean to have God's "face to shine upon us"?

Well, think about what it was like when your mom or dad were really mad at you and told you to go to your room, that they didn't even want to look at you right now.  Or think about a time when your spouse was so angry that she needed some time alone or told you to go away.  Now imagine that on a much bigger scale with God.

Someone once defined hell as the absence of God, or God turning his back on us.  When Jesus was on the cross and cried out "My God, m God why have you forsaken me", it was a literal thing where the Father turned His back on His Son.

Jesus took that forsakenness upon himself so that we wouldn't have to suffer it.  The Father had mercy on us by sending his own Son in our place.

Because of the sacrifice of His Son, the father, through Jesus, has promised that he will never leave us or forsake us.  He has promised to let his face continually shine upon us and give us eternal peace!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for sending your Son to be forsaken in our place so that your face will always shine upon us.  Amen.
