DEVOTION:  Isaiah 44:6-8  English Standard Version (ESV)

Besides Me There Is No God

⁶ Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel
    and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
"I am the first and I am the last;
    besides me there is no god.
⁷ Who is like me? Let him proclaim it.
    Let him declare and set it before me,
since I appointed an ancient people.
    Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.
⁸ Fear not, nor be afraid;
    have I not told you from of old and declared it?
    And you are my witnesses!
Is there a God besides me?
    There is no Rock; I know not any."

 

It's pretty clear isn't it?  If we are to believe that the Bible is true and that God's Word is a real thing, then we have to take it for what it says, or better yet, take God for who He is.  He says who he is!  He says that there is no God but Him.  He declares it.  He makes it known.  Who are we to tell him who he is, or to declare what he is or isn't?

 

Yet, that's what people do, isn't it?  People think that God is real, because they believe in him.  In fact, they think that way about everything.  The truth is, people, that stuff isn't true because you believe it.  You believe it, because it's true.  In other words, just because you believe it doesn't mean it's true.  It's not your belief or affirmation of something that makes it true.  It is true all by itself. 

 

God doesn't need you to believe in Him for Him to be the real, true, and only God.  He wants you to believe in Him, because it is good for you to believe in Him, and because it is the TRUTH!

 

In the same way, God doesn't need you to believe and trust in His Word, as it is found in the Scriptures, for it to be true.  It is true all by itself.  Jesus prayed to the Father saying, "Sanctify them (make them holy) by the truth.  Your Word IS TRUTH."   I am praying that everyone, including me, can get this through our thick skulls today, and live like God and His Word are real and true, BECAUSE THEY ARE!!!

 

Prayer: Lord, sanctify me by Your truth.  Your  Word is TRUTH! Amen.

Alec Fisher (the guy who preached while I was on vacation) has received a call to be a pastor in Maryland, therefore Rachel Fisher's (our organist) last Sunday to play organ and violin for us will be July 30.  We would like to thank them both for their service to St. John's these past two years with cards and gifts on that day.  Please consider bringing a gift to the 5^th Sunday celebration on Sunday, July 30 at 11am to show them your appreciation!  They, along with their beautiful children,  will both be greatly missed.

The next trip will be to Westport Playhouse on Sunday, Sept 17 for "Church Basement Ladies" a comedy take off on the Lutheran ladies in the kitchen. Men would enjoy also. We would leave at 12:30 p.m. from church and return apx 6:45 p.m. Getting tickets at 1/2 price each ticket $25 plus bus cost & dinner. They are holding 47 tickets for me this week.

Parents can still call and get their child's name on a waiting list if they wish, and each child will be taken on a first come first serve basis at the teacher's discretion.

CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP IS CANCELED

Due to very low attendance (no one showed up last night), The good news club scheduled for this week has been canceled. 

There are two others going on throughout the week. One is right behind the library from 11:30-1, and the other is in Paddock Fields subdivision from 2:30-4.  Check them out if you are interested.  They're really fun and cool even though it's hot.

For CAL TAMELER as he awaits much needed surgery on his legs.  Surgery is scheduled for August 8.

 

 

PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL:

For SAM HARGROVE deployed in Amman, Jordan and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

 

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, COLTON FIGURA stationed in California, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

 

For CALEB FIGURA AND VINCE MASTERS who are both serving our country in the National Guard and take time out of their lives, jobs, and families to go on duty several times a year.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 119:57-64

Heth

⁵⁷ The Lord is my portion;
    I promise to keep your words.
⁵⁸ I entreat your favor with all my heart;
    be gracious to me according to your promise.
⁵⁹ When I think on my ways,
    I turn my feet to your testimonies;
⁶⁰ I hasten and do not delay
    to keep your commandments.
⁶¹ Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
    I do not forget your law.
⁶² At midnight I rise to praise you,
    because of your righteous rules.
⁶³ I am a companion of all who fear you,
    of those who keep your precepts.
⁶⁴ The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
    teach me your statutes!

 

First, let me explain what that first word "Heth" is.  Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible.  It is made up of sections, the first word in each section starts with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet.  "Heth" is a letter in that alphabet….. So now you know. 

 

Now on to the devotion.  In this section the writer repeats several times in different ways that he loves God's law.  He calls them by different names; rules, precepts, statutes, testimonies, law, commandments, word.  All of these refer to God's will for us. 

 

As the sinful human beings that we are, our every inclination is to disobey, rebel, and fight against the rules.  We don't like to be told what to do.  Yet, David here says that he wants them and lives by them.  What's the difference with David?  How did he get to the point that he can say that he loves God's rules?

 

The difference is in how God, the Holy Spirit, transformed his life.  God used the circumstances in his life, and even more His life changing, transforming, and perfect Word to turn David's heart around.  And it wasn't a one time, forever thing.  It was a continuous thing, because David continued to be a human being, a sinner.

 

He does the same for you.  He entered your heart when you first heard the Word and believed it, and on the day you were baptized.  From that moment on, he has been changing your heart to receive His Word, both the his will in the law and his good news in the Gospel, so that your heart can receive it with thankfulness and praise.  Now you can love His law, because you know that He is giving it to you out of His love and faithfulness toward you. 

 

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for your law.  Guide me, by the power of your Holy Spirit, to live by it and in it so that I may praise and honor you with my life.  Amen.

The Pregnancy Options Center of Warren County is seeking a part-time professional to serve as its Executive Director, providing leadership and overall management of this new nonprofit organization. As an ambassador of Christ, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the effective operation of the pregnancy center, including overseeing administration, staffing, programming, services, fundraising, marketing, media relations and community outreach. It will expand into a full-time exempt position as the center is established and grows over time. PRAYERS: 

For FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF BILL SHOEMAKE, brother of Chrissy Groeber, who passed away last night.  Visitation and funeral arrangements are pending.

 

For CAL TAMELER as he awaits much needed surgery on his legs.  Surgery is scheduled for August 8.

 

For SAM HARGROVE deployed in Amman, Jordan and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

 

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, COLTON FIGURA stationed in California, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

 

For CALEB FIGURA AND VINCE MASTERS who are both serving our country in the National Guard and take time out of their lives, jobs, and families to go on duty several times a year.

 

 

Traveling Fellowship Group Trip coming up!

The next trip will be to Westport Playhouse on Sunday Sept 17 for "Church Basement Ladies" a comedy take off on the Lutheran ladies in the kitchen. Men would enjoy also. We would leave at 12:30 p.m. from church and return apx 6:45 p.m. Getting tickets at 1/2 price each ticket $25 plus bus cost & dinner. They are holding 47 tickets for me this week.

    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,

    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
    and the battle bow will be broken.

Lately, I've been feeling kinda down.  I guess I get this way during the Summer.  I call them the "Summer gones".  Lots of people are gone on vacation (as I will be next week), gone to family, gone to lake homes, just plain gone.  It's very hard to get anything new started or to work on anything that needs to get done.  We didn't even have VBS this year, because too many of our regular helpers were going to be gone.  Truth is, I miss y'all when you're gone.

 

It is during these Summer doldrums that it feels so good to be reminded of God's promises such as the ones that are in the reading for today.  It is good to hear and know that he will "restore twice as much to you.", and that our King has already come to us "righteous and having salvation". 

 

Isn't it great to know that in spite of the "gones", and in spite of our different and various circumstances in life, Christ is never "gone" from us!

 

Pastor Wilkinson, who was pastor a Warrenton Christian Church, and a very wise and caring man, until he died a few years ago, told me that life and ministry are like the tide.  There will be times where the tide comes in and life is full and prosperous and busy, and there are other times when the tide will go out and things will seem bleak.  In all of those times the Lord is working it all out for your good. 

 

Whether your life is a full or low tide right now, know that the Lord is with you and he is working it all out for your good.  May the Lord bless you richly today and always as you rest in Him! 

 

Prayer: Lord, bless our church, our community, and us so that we may grow in you no matter what the current times or circumstances are holding for us.  Amen.

LITTLE LAMBS SUMMER CAMP IS COMING UP JULY 18-21!!!

Cost? $50 ($45 for cam + $5 supply fee

Time? 8:30-11:30

Who? 3-6 year olds--  They don't have to be currently enrolled in Little Lambs or be a member of St. John's. 

 

This is a perfect way to give your little ones a taste of what preschool is all about. It's tons of fun!
