DEVOTION: Psalm 145:1-14

A psalm of praise. Of David.

¹ I will exalt you, my God the King;
    I will praise your name for ever and ever.
² Every day I will praise you
    and extol your name for ever and ever.

³ Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    his greatness no one can fathom.
⁴ One generation commends your works to another;
    they tell of your mighty acts.
⁵ They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
    and I will meditate on your wonderful works.^[b]
6 They tell of the power of your awesome works—
    and I will proclaim your great deeds.
⁷ They celebrate your abundant goodness
    and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

⁸ The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
    slow to anger and rich in love.

⁹ The Lord is good to all;
    he has compassion on all he has made.
¹⁰ All your works praise you, Lord;
    your faithful people extol you.
¹¹ They tell of the glory of your kingdom
    and speak of your might,
¹² so that all people may know of your mighty acts
    and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
¹³ Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and your dominion endures through all generations.

The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises
    and faithful in all he does.^[c]
14 The Lord upholds all who fall
    and lifts up all who are bowed down.

 

 

I love these words of David here this morning!  Too often we see the Lord as a cold hearted judge who is waiting for any excuse to strike down his creation at any moment.  We are also afraid of him, and want to stay away from his wrath as much as possible. 

 

These views couldn't be any further from the truth.  He brought you into being.  He formed you in your mother's womb.  You are fearfully and wonderfully made!  Why would he want to simply destroy the very thing he created to love and cherish?   He loves you more than anyone else every could. 

 

In His love for you he sent his one and only Son to die for you!  He died that you may have life and have it abundantly!

 

So quit walking around being afraid of God and quit walking around with a chip on your shoulder thinking that God is just going to judge you and strike you down!  The Lord loves you and wants what is best for you!  Like a father who loves his child and has to discipline from time to time, so the Lord disciplines you, but only out of love.  He allows you to go through trials and trouble so that he can mold you into the person he created you and redeemed you to be!

 

As you celebrate your independence tomorrow, remember how dependent you are on the Lord.  He doesn't take advantage of that dependence.  He doesn't abuse you!  He lifts you up!  He binds your wounds!  He forgives you!  He gives you eternal life!

Lord, thank you for being my heavenly Father and for loving me more than anyone else ever could.  Amen.

THE PREGNANCY OPTIONS CENTER OF WARREN COUNTY IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATION FOR THE FULL/PART TIME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR!! 

The Pregnancy Options Center of Warren County is seeking a part-time professional to serve as its Executive Director, providing leadership and overall management of this new nonprofit organization. As an ambassador of Christ, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the effective operation of the pregnancy center, including overseeing administration, staffing, programming, services, fundraising, marketing, media relations and community outreach. It will expand into a full-time exempt position as the center is established and grows over time. LITTLE LAMBS SUMMER CAMP IS COMING UP JULY 18-21!!!

Cost? $50 ($45 for cam + $5 supply fee

Time? 8:30-11:30

Who? 3-6 year olds--  They don't have to be currently enrolled in Little Lambs or be a member of St. John's. 

 

This is a perfect way to give your little ones a taste of what preschool is all about. It's tons of fun!

TURNING POINT IS HAVING A WORK WEEK!  August 7 - 11 (and July 22/23 and 29/30) Our shelter and office areas are feeling over-worked and under-loved.       And before it becomes this:   , we thought we would see if any of our generous community friends and partners might have a few minutes (hours) to lend to this cause. For BILL SHOEMAKE, brother of Chrissy Groeber who is in ICU on life support, but has improved slightly from yesterday.

 

For SAM HARGROVE deployed in Amman, Jordan and DAN DREYER deploying this week to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

 

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, COLTON FIGURA stationed in California, and ANDREW WALTERS, stationed in Kentucky.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

 

For OUR COUNTRY, that we may work together for the common good and that God may guide us and keep us.

DEVOTION:  Matthew 10:5a, 21-33

⁵ These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them,

²¹ Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,²² and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ²³ When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

²⁴ "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant^[a] above his master. ²⁵ It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign^[b] those of his household.

Have No Fear

²⁶ "So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. ²⁷ What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. ²⁸ And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.^[c]29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?^[d] And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. ³⁰ But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. ³¹ Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. ³² So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, ³³ but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Not Peace, but a Sword

³⁴ "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. ³⁵ For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

 

 

More good news today….. right?  At first it doesn't sound like it.  In this reading we are hearing Jesus talk about families being split apart and about fear of all different sorts and kinds. It tears me up just thinking about it. 

At the same time, we need not fear any of this, because we have the truth.  We do not have to fear those who can only kill the body.  We only need to fear, that is hold in reverence and awe, the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.  If we fear the Lord, we will never need to fear the world.  If we fear the Lord, all of those other things, as painful as they may be at the present time, will go away. 

So if you are a believer and have fear of the things on the earth, remember that these things will eventually go away.  Your torn up relationships will be gone.  Your aches and pains will vanish.  Your past mistakes will be forgotten. 

The only thing that will remain is the everlasting love, mercy, grace, peace, and rest of the Lord!  He is the one who can send your soul and body to hell, but if you simply believe and trust in Him, he will take you to be with Him forever!  Fear Him!  Love Him!  Honor Him!

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me the ability to fear and honor you!  Amen. _______________________________________________________________________

HOLY YOGA DURING SUNDDAY SCHOOL THIS SUNDAY!!

This coming Sunday, during Sunday school, Amanda Nordwald will be teaching a special Holy Yoga class for kids and anyone else who wants to join her!  No need to bring a mat.  Please join in on the fun and exercise!!

ALL YOUTH NIGHT THIS COMING WEDNESDAY!!

Next Wednesday, June 28, there will be an ALL YOUTH night, 5:30-7:30!!  There will be pizza and fun/games!!  You are asked to bring everything for a birthday cake (a boxed cake mix, candles, and icing) for Turning Point…  Why?  A lot of times kids live there and even have their birthdays while they are there.  This will help them out tremendously to take care of the kids who live there.

A WEEK LEFT TO SIGN UP FOR STEPHEN MINISTRY TRAINING!!

Right now we have seven people signed up!  Will you join them?  Reply to sing up or sign your name to the sign up sheet on the table in the narthex.

 

Throughout the month of June we will be highlighting our Stephen Ministry program. 

 

Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry that is carried out by lay people.  It has been a part of St. John's in various forms and levels since 2003.  Many people have gone through the training and cared for others with their training.  These people are called "care givers".  Many more have benefitted from the help these people have provided.  These people are called "care receivers".  This is a tremendously beneficial ministry to both care giver and care receivers as both grow in faith and as many of them become friends if they weren't already. 

 

It is also a great benefit to our congregation for many different reasons!  Care givers learn how to be better Christian moms, dads, husbands, wives, friends, and church members.  The congregation grows as our community finds out how caring and loving we are as a congregation through this ministry.  It is a wonderful thing!

 

We are in need of some new Stephen ministers.  It is a commitment, but the commitment is definitely worth it!  You will be blessed beyond measure if you go through the training and become a Stephen Minister.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NEED MEN TO BE STEPEHEN MINISTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WOMEN!!

 

Last Sunday at our 8:30 worship, Chrissy Groeber and Marcia Sevier were installed as our new Stephen Leaders!!  They will be starting a new Stephen Ministry training as soon as everyone who is interested signs up and a start date and time can be established. 

 

Please prayerfully consider this and then come to church this coming weekend and sign up or reply to this email and I will sign you up!

For PAT MANNESS as she is recovering from hand and wrist surgery at home.
