DEVOTION:  John 7:37-39  English Standard Version (ESV)

Rivers of Living Water

³⁷ On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. ³⁸ Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" ³⁹ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

 

What does it mean when Jesus says "If anyone thirsts"?  Are you thirsty?  Should you be?   Is it even on your radar screen?  Do you spend any time thinking about these things?  The truth is that EVERYONE is thirsty.  It's just a matter of how one quenches that thirst. 

Jesus says to come to him when you are thirsty and drink of him!  I know, from experience, that nothing quenches a thirst for belonging, love, peace, purpose, or contentment like Jesus does.  You're always going to be looking for the next party or the next opportunity to get drunk or high.  You're always going to be wanting to buy the next thing.  You're always going to be searching for that next hook up, that next shallow relationship.  You're always going to be searching for that next achievement, that next promotion. 

When you "drink" of these things you'll always be thirsty again, usually immediately afterward.  When you "drink" of Jesus through his Word and Sacraments you will never be thirsty again.  The love, forgiveness, and peace of Jesus always completely satisfies! 

True worship and true fellowship with the saints in church is what satisfies!  Coming to God's house and hearing his Word, eating his body, drinking his blood, fellowshipping with his body (fellow Christians) is what truly fills you!  No amount of staying at home on Sunday is gonna make you feel better.  You can't stay away from God's Word and Sacraments and expect to be satisfied with your job, your stuff, your accomplishments.  You're always going to feel empty inside, and your tank is gonna run on empty all week without getting filled up on Jesus!

Take time to fill up your spiritual tank this week!  Take time to "drink" of Jesus and get your fill!!  Go to church!  Do devotions at home.  Pray without ceasing!  And when all is said and done, know that, by virtue of your baptism and faith in Christ, you are filled with the Spirit.  Let him live in you!  Let him thrive in you!  REST in his grace and peace! 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for promising and sending your Holy Spirit upon us.  Help us to partake of the gifts you give through which the Holy Spirit works so that we may grow daily in your grace.  Amen. _______________________________________________________________________

For MARIANNE LINKE as she is recovering well from heart surgery (a stent was put in) at home.

 

For SUE RUHL, as she continues to recover from a broken hip at Parklane rehab in Wentzville.

 

For PAT MANNESS as she is recovering from hand and wrist surgery at home.

 

For Dawn Frye's dad, WALTER BRADLEY, who has been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing intense radiation therapy.

 

For LOIS BOEGER'S MOM, EVELYN TOEDEBUSCH,  as she has been moved to Breeze Park for more extensive and round the clock care.  

 

For a FRIEND OF AL AND KAREN BENTON who is dealing with brain cancer.

DEVOTION:  Numbers 11:24-30  English Standard Version (ESV)

²⁴ So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. ²⁵ Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

²⁶ Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. ²⁷ And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." ²⁸ And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, "My lord Moses, stop them." ²⁹ But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!" ³⁰ And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

This just goes to show how powerful the Spirit is.  You don't even have to go to church to receive the Holy Spirit.  Eldad and Medad didn't.  They registered, but they didn't go to the tent.  That's code for, "They were members of the church, but they were too lazy to get up and go to the building as they were asked." 

Still God, who is rich in mercy, decided that they should still receive the power of the Holy Spirit. He does the same for you and me.  Whether we are faithful in worship or not, we are still sinners. Each and every one of us is full of sin.  None of us deserves the Holy Spirit living in us. 

But he does.  He fills us with Himself, and gives us more and more grace.  He loves us that much.  Even though we keep turning our backs on him day after day in our weakness and disobedience, he keeps loving us and forgiving us.

Our attendance at worship, our daily living in God's grace, our peace that passes all understanding, has nothing to do with what we do or who we are, except that we believe in Jesus and are his children.  We are his and so he keeps on filling us, forgiving us, and saving us!  Thanks be to God!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me your Spirit despite my continued failure to come to you and to your house.  Amen.

Teach Me Your Paths

^[a] Of David.

25 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
² O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
³ Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

⁴ Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
⁵ Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

⁶ Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

⁸ Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
⁹ He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.

How do you want people to remember you?  Should they remember how rebellious and sinful you were when you were a kid?  Should they say, "There's Fred, I've heard too many bad things about him.  We better stay away from him."  Do you want them to remember the many mistakes you've made and bring them up at every opportunity?  Do you want them to remember all the wealth you've collected over the years and all of your accomplishments?  Do you want them to remember how powerful and important you were?  What is important that people remember about you?

 

Too often this is out of our control.  People are going to remember what they want to remember, good or bad, about you.  And believe me, people are going to remember your mistakes, especially if you've had some doozies, and some very public things you've done. 

 

There's someone who doesn't though.  Even though he knows better than anyone else what you've done in the past, he has forgotten it all.  He has blotted it from his memory.  Our Lord God, our heavenly Father, remembers us not according to what we deserve, or with the judgmental thoughts that many others would, but according to his steadfast love and faithfulness and for the sake of his goodness.  He remembers you as he remembers his Son, Jesus!

 

As you go through your day today, and as you are painfully reminded of your faults and failures, remember that the Lord doesn't remember them nor remember you that way.  He remembers you in love, mercy, peace, and forgiveness!!

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for forgetting my sin, and for loving me and forgiving me instead.  Amen.
