DEVOTION:  Luke 24:44-53 English Standard Version (ESV)

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." ⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, ⁴⁶ and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, ⁴⁷ and that repentance for^[a] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ You are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

The Ascension

⁵⁰ And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. ⁵¹ While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. ⁵² And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, ⁵³ and were continually in the temple blessing God. 

 

It used to be that Ascension Day was held in higher esteem and had more importance within Christendom, and especially in Lutheranism.  There were special services.  People took off work.  It was a holiday.  Although there was no Ascension Santa Claus Ascension Bunny, it was a high holy day for most Christians.  For me, it always coincided with the end of the school year which, still today, at my home church/school, is the day before Ascension Day (yesterday).  Instead of Memorial Day being the official start to Summer, ours was Ascension Day.

Anyway, enough of my old person ramblings.  The ascension, as it is recorded in Scripture should still hold great importance for us.  It ushers in the sending of the Holy Spirit.  It shows us that Jesus is more than just a man, that he is the Son of God and that he sits on the throne in heaven.  It also shows us the manner by which he will come back and judge the earth.  Lastly, it shows us how we will ascend, not like ghosts or spirits, but fully alive, bodily. 

Rejoice today!  Christ is risen! Christ has ascended!  Christ will come again!  Alleluia!

 

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for ascending into heaven to usher in your coming kingdom and to give us hope that we will live forever as you do.  Amen.

For Dawn Frye's dad, WALTER BRADLEY, who has been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing intense radiation therapy.

 

For LOIS BOEGER'S MOM, EVELYN TOEDEBUSCH,  as she has been moved to Breeze Park for more extensive and round the clock care.

 

For PAT MANNESS as she will be undergoing extensive surgery and rehab on her hand next Friday, May 26.

 

For a FRIEND OF AL AND KAREN BENTON who is dealing with brain cancer.

 

For CAROL BRAZEE recovering from sinus surgery at home.

 

For MARILYN FOSTER as she prepares for her retirement.

 

For DANIELLE MEINE KRAMER, whose leukemia is back after a brief respite from it.  She had it for several years while in high school.  (She grew up riding Karin's school bus to school.)

 

For Mim Dunn's nephew DAVID HAHN who is off the treatments for a month and then he will have tests to see

Thanksgiving and Prayer

¹⁵ For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love^[a] toward all the saints, ¹⁶ I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, ¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, ¹⁸ having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,¹⁹ and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might ²⁰ that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹ far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. ²² And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, ²³ which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

 

Paul just can't stop talking about Jesus.  Notice what he starts off with in this passage.  He spends the first three verses talking about the person or people to whom he is writing and the wonderful faith they have, but then he transitions to all about Jesus and the next twelve verses are all about him.

He doesn't expand on what the people are all about.  He only expands on what Jesus is all about. 

I could write devotions and articles and whole books about all the wonderful people that are part of the St. John's family.  There are A LOT of fantastic people who make up St. John's!  You all do many wonderful things.  You work hard!  You take care of your families.  You show your love for the Lord in many and various ways.  I am proud of you all, and so is Jesus!

Yet, my lauding and magnifying you is not going to help you one bit.  What's going to help you is JESUS!  He alone can give you faith!  He alone can work a good work in you!  He alone can change your heart and mind and bring you to repentance when you falter and fail.  And He alone can bring you to heaven to be with Him forever!

So yes, I am proud of the many gracious and fantastic members off St. John's, but I am much more proud and will continue to magnify and praise the Lord Jesus above all things, because He alone is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life!

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for creating, giving faith to, and sustaining the members of St. John's!  I thank you for making them who you have called them to be.  Most of all I thank you for giving them Jesus and raising them to eternal life with you by grace through faith.  Amen.  _______________________________________________________________________

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, ² until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. ³ He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

⁴ And while staying^[a] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; ⁵ for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with^[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

The Ascension

⁶ So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" ⁷ He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. ⁸ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." ⁹ And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. ¹⁰ And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, ¹¹ and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

 

Sometimes, as Christians, we get too focused on when Jesus will come back, and we fail to realize and live in the fact that we have the Lord with us and in us right now.  We are already living in grace!

The disciples were told to wait in Jerusalem until the promised Holy Spirit came upon them.  They weren't told to wait until he came back.  In last week's Gospel reading we heard the same promise of the Holy Spirit from Jesus. 

The power and peace of the Holy Spirit is nothing to sneeze at.  It is, as it were, a little bit of heave on earth.  When we know by faith that we are saved from our sin and that our creator holds nothing against us because of his Son, we have that peace that goes above and beyond all understanding.  When the Holy Spirit lives in us he gives us faith and guides us in the faith.  He works through His means of grace to bring about faith and continually increase and sustain that faith!

What a blessing it is to know that we are already in the grace of God.  What a joy it is to know the heavenly Father loves us so.  What a peace it gives all of us to know that he is with us and in us every step of the way!

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank and praise you for sending your Holy Spirit into us so that we need not fear, but can rejoice in the love and forgiveness you give us.  Keep us in the faith and increase our faith daily.  Amen.
