Lutheran South Students Earn National Spanish Exam Honors

This year, 157,020 students nationwide took the National Spanish Exam. It is a difficult, leveled exam, often compared to the ACT test. The purpose of the National Spanish Examination is:
  • to recognize achievement in the study of the Spanish language
  • to promote proficiency in interpretive communication in the Spanish language
  • to assess the national standards as they pertain to learning Spanish
  • to stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of Spanish

Last year, Lutheran South's (St. Louis, Mo.) first year of participation, resulted in an outstanding 12 medal winners. Of the 48 that tested at LHSS, 42 received an honorable mention or better. An unprecedented 26 took medals: 12 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze. Three students placed in the 99th percentile. Read more . . .

St. John's Lutheran Church and School Eighth Annual Neighborhood Block Party

Under perfect skies, a crowd of nearly 2,500 gathered, celebrating the 8th annual neighborhood Block Party hosted by St. John's Lutheran Church and School Friday evening. Children were dazzled by the antics of Skippy the Clown, while car enthusiasts appreciated the pristine condition of the antique cars on display. Also on display was the newly acquired trailer available to those from St. John's serving on the Disaster Response Team, which assists with local and regional natural disasters. Read more . . .

Teaching the Faith: Adults

Taken from the June 2017 Edition of the RSTM Newsletter and contributed by Rev. Heath Trampe, Faith Lutheran Church, York, Neb.

When I accepted the call to serve as Senior Pastor at Faith in York, Neb., I assumed that Adult Bible Class would be a walk in the park. I was coming from a 2,000+ member congregation in a large city. As Associate Pastor at St. Peter's, I helped to oversee and execute a weekly Wednesday evening Bible study that brought in 300-400 people a week. This was in addition to teaching the Adult Information Class for new members and administrating the youth confirmation program. It did not take long to discover that rural and small town ministry has its own unique blessings and challenges! Over two years later, we are seeing 40–60 adults every Sunday morning for the pastor-led Bible class, in addition to strong attendance at many small groups that meet throughout the week. But it was not always this way. Here are some things I learned in my first two years at Faith. Read more . . .

DEVOTION John 14:15-21  English Standard Version (ESV)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be[b] in you.

18 "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

One of the greatest comforts I have is that the Holy Spirit is with me wherever I go.  It's actually THE greatest comfort of a pastor, because he knows that as long as he is speaking in the name of Jesus and preaching and teaching God's Word, he can't lose.  The results do not depend on him.  A preacher/pastor cannot change the heart.  Only the Holy Spirit, working through His Word, can do that.

The biggest and best thing that a pastor can do is bring God's Word of law, the will of God and our inability to do it, and the gospel, the good news that Jesus has done it all for us and suffered and died in our place; and then get out of the way.  Let the Word do the work.

The more the pastor relies on his own skills, abilities, good looks, etc. and the more the church relies on that pastor's good looks and abilities, the more doomed they are.  The pastor is not the savior fo the church, the Lord God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is its Savior!

The same holds true for you as an individual.  You are not your own Savior.  Jesus is your Savior.  The more you rely on yourself, the more you will be disappointed, depressed and lost.  The more you rely on Jesus as your Savior from sin and the Holy Spirit as your guide, the more free you will become and the more peace you will have.  May you learn to rely more and more on Jesus and be filled with His peace!

Prayer: Lord, help us to rely on you and get out of your way. Amen.

ARMED FORCES SUNDAY DOOR OFFERING WILL BE ON MAY 20 and 21!!

We will be a collecting a door offering to provide for Bible sticks for our soldiers.  Most armed forces personnel  can't take their phone or computers with them when they are deployed and paper Bibles are too inconvenient.  Bible sticks are just the right size and can fit easily into a pocket and carried wherever they go.  Each Bible stick cost $25 to make and to ship.  There have been over 800,000 of these Bible sticks given to soldiers since it began and thousands of more ready to ship.  They just need the funds to get them out the door.

Here's one testimony from a soldier.  "I am coming back into the arms of the Father who has never forsaken me. This mp3 Bible came right on time, because I have been contemplating suicide."

Please make a note for yourself to bring some money for this very worthy ministry next weekend!!!

DEVOTION:  1 Peter 3:13-22  English Standard Version (ESV)

13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

18 For Christ also suffered[a] once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which[b] he went and proclaimed[c] to the spirits in prison, 20 because[d] they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

There have been books and books written about the theology that is put forth in this passage.  There's so much stuff, like how he descended into hell to proclaim victory to the spirits in prison, that Baptism now saves you, the ascension and reign of Jesus at the right hand of God, and so much more.

I want to focus on verse 15, because the ability to give an answer for your faith is something that is extremely lacking among Christians today.  I think it is because too much focus is placed on emotion and feeling and not enough on facts and knowledge.

As real and important as emotion and feeling is, we cannot base our whole faith on it.  Our faith is so much more than feelings or a hunch.  It is based on the real life truth that Jesus is who he says he is and did what he said he did.  It is based on the fact and reality that Jesus really did rise from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity.  It is based on real, tangible, historical, provable FACTS!!

The job for you is to become acquainted with those facts and that reality, we call it THEOLOGY!  Study it so that you know it and can give an answer to everyone who asks you!  KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE, so that you can do the one thing God has called you to do, MAKE DISCIPLES!!!

Let us pray: Lord God, help me to know as much as you have revealed to me about you so that I can give it to others.  Amen.
