LERT Volunteers Deploy to Assist in Storm Recovery

http://images.benchmarkemail.com/client64246/image4218500.jpg

Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) volunteers from Western Missouri deployed to assist in work in Oak Grove on March 10 and Smithville on March 12. The volunteers assisted in clearing trees and other debris in yards. They also assisted in demolition work on homes. The LERT teams have connected with local emergency response coordinators and may assist in additional work in those communities as needed. Plans are underway to provide additional LERT training courses across the district. The recent storms have once again highlighted the need for training more LERT teams throughout the state. If you would like more information about LERT training or if your congregation would be interested in hosting training, please contact District Disaster Response Coordinator, Rev. Charles Schultz ( pastorschultz@att.net).

Abiding Savior Lutheran Students Honor Local "Superheroes"

http://images.benchmarkemail.com/client64246/image4218511.jpg

Students at Abiding Savior Lutheran School thanked their community's "superheroes" March 15 during a special ceremony at the school's campus, 4353 Butler Hill Rd., in south St. Louis County.

The event honored seventeen police officers, firefighters and paramedics from nearby departments, including St. Louis County Police and the Lemay and Mehlville fire protection districts. About 215 students participated in the tribute, which included a video message, "Thank You" posters, bible verses and standing ovations for each officer. The students also prepared 400 care packages – filled with water bottles, candy, snacks and tissues – for the officers to bring back to their departments. The celebration coincided with Abiding Savior Lutheran School Spirit Week.  Read more . . .

Missouri District Hosts Parish Nurse Convocation

http://images.benchmarkemail.com/client64246/image4222452.jpg

Parish nurses from across Missouri and Southern Illinois attended the Missouri District Parish Nurse Convocation on March 14 at the district office. President Lee Hagan led the morning Bible study and Dr. Bruce Hartung led the closing devotion. The group also heard presentations from Rev. Gene Wyssmann of the District staff, Deaconess Kristina Paul from Salem Lutheran Church in Affton and long-time leader in older adult ministry, Rev. Walt Schoedel, pastor emeritus of Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. The convocation provided opportunity for the parish nurses to dialogue and consider ways to provide on-going support. District Parish Nurse Representative Carol Broemmer planned the convocation with assistance from Carla Hagan of Timothy Lutheran Church in St. Louis. If you would like more information about parish nursing, please contact the district office and we will connect you with Carol Broemmer. Carla Hagan will be one of the presenters at our upcoming Mission Summit on June 3 at Concordia Seminary and will present on the topic of "Medical Care and Community Outreach."

DEVOTION: Psalm 142  English Standard Version (ESV)

You Are My Refuge

A Maskil[a] of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.

142 With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
    with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
I pour out my complaint before him;
    I tell my trouble before him.

When my spirit faints within me,
    you know my way!
In the path where I walk
    they have hidden a trap for me.
Look to the right and see:
    there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
    no one cares for my soul.

I cry to you, O Lord;
    I say, "You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living."
Attend to my cry,
    for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
    for they are too strong for me!
Bring me out of prison,
    that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
    for you will deal bountifully with me.

David had to deal with a lot of traitors and a lot of trouble throughout his life.  For most of his life there were very few people he could trust.  It was very hard for him to be at the top.  Being the king wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

It was in those times of loneliness and mistrust that David called out to the Lord.  He was the only one to whom he could pour out all his troubles.  He was the only one to whom he could cry out for relief.  It was God who dealt bountifully with him, while everyone else either wanted to dethrone him to take his power or was just jealous of him and would do what it would take to bring him down.

Maybe you feel like that sometimes.  Maybe you've committed some grievous sins from which you feel like you can't come back, like David, or like the woman at the well.  Maybe your heart hurts from all the times its been stepped on or taken advantage of.  Maybe you feel like you just can't trust anyone at all.

Rejoice!  You have a Savior, God incarnate, Jesus, to whom you can trust your very soul.  He has never let you down, and He never will.  He is your rock, your fortress, and your mighty deliverer!  Run to Him!  Pour out your heart to Him.  Give Him your troubles, your failures and your doubts!  He will surely lift you up!

Prayer: Lord, Thank you for being everything for me when I need you.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  John 4:5-30English Standard Version (ESV)

So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[a]

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock." 13 Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.[b]The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."

16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." 17 The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true." 19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things." 26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."

27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you seek?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

First of all she was talking to a woman.  Second, she was telling her everything she had done.  Third, he called himself the Messiah.  All of these things are cool.  But I think the coolest thing of the whole story is that she believed him and then went and told everyone about him.

I can just imagine what the conversations were like.  She had not been the most upstanding person.  She probably was looked down upon by most of the people in town.  Yet, because of the power of Christ and His Word working in her heart, the townspeople also believed and many came out and went to him.

This is the miracle of faith.  We don't believe because our intellect tells us to believe.  We don't believe in Jesus just because he's a pretty cool dude with lots of good teachings.  NO!  We believe because the Holy Spirit has brought us to faith and continues to stoke that faith with His Holy Spirit power working through His Word and Sacraments.

Therefore, the more we are in His Word and Sacraments, the more our fire will be stoked.  The less we are in those things through worship, fellowship and self study of God's Word, the less on fire we will be and the more discouraged we will become about faith and life in general.

I urge you to COME AND SEE THE CHRIST this weekend for worship and every day as you study God's Word and gather around Him n fellowship!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for creating and sustain faith in me.  Help me t make use of your gifts of Word and Sacrament as much as possible so you can fire me up.  Amen.

If you love caring for others and consider yourself a leader, this is the perfect way for you to serve the Lord and your church family!

The Stephen Leader training is April 23-29 at the Renaissance Hotel by the airport this year and the cost of the training is covered by the church.  If you choose to stay at the hotel you will have to pay for that yourself.  It's only a 35 minute commute to the training from Warrenton.

GENERAL PRAYER

Please pray for both Randy and Patty Sweet's mothers as they are both in failing health.  Virginia, Patty's mom, has just been diagnosed with lung cancer.  Rose, Randy's mom, had a bad seizure a month ago, and although she is walking and talking fine, the seizure caused some dementia.

For HANNAH LINSTRUTH who is recovering from a broken leg due to a car accident.

For MARIE HARVEY, a sister in law of CHERI VERME, and a friend of the Winters, who is near death from stage 4 cancer.

For DANIELLE MEINE KRAMER, whose leukemia is back after a brief respite from it.  She had it for several years while in high school.  (She grew up riding Karin's school bus to school.)

For Mim Dunn's nephew DAVID HAHN who is dealing with severe throat cancer.

For LOIS BOEGER'S MOM, EVELYN TOEDEBUSCH,  who has been on hospice care for the last few months and slows down a little more every day, but is doing well.
