DEVOTION:

Leviticus 19:1-2 New International Version (NIV)

19 The Lord said to Moses, "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

 9 When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.

11 "'Do not steal.

"'Do not lie.

"'Do not deceive one another.

12 "'Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.

13 "'Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.

"'Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.

14 "'Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the Lord.

15 "'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

16 "'Do not go about spreading slander among your people.

"'Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life. I am the Lord.

17 "'Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.

18 "'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

Wow, at first glance these look like the ten commandments, but as you look closer these are different.  They are sort of like the commandments, but not the same.

Actually, If you were to look at the explanations to the commandments as they are found in the Small Catechism, you would see a lot of what is spoken by God to Moses here. The commandments aren't as easy as don't talk back to mom and dad, or don't stab anyone, they are essentially what the Lord Himself says in verse 2.  "Be holy (perfect) as I, the Lord your God, am holy (perfect)."

That's it.  In a nutshell God requires perfection and you aren't.  You're doomed.  There's no coming back from it. There's no restart button.  There's no, I messed up this time so I better get it right tomorrow.

And the other truth is that when we put these commandments on others by judging them without first judging ourselves, we are doing a great disservice to them, causing them to be in despair, instead of giving them the joy, peace, and rest of the Gospel that God truly wants them to have.

This is why He sent Jesus!  So I urge you to stop trying to prove yourself to God.  Stop living in fear of His judgment, and start living in the restfulness of His grace.  Then, and only then, when you are living out of love and peace instead of fear and loathing, will you truly be able to do the things that God asks of you in the verses above, and you will do them for the right reasons.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to live out your commands in the love, mercy, and grace that you intended for me, so that others may know that same mercy and grace.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 119:33-40   English Standard Version (ESV)

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
    and I will keep it to the end.[a]
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.
35 Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to your testimonies,
    and not to selfish gain!
37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
    and give me life in your ways.
38 Confirm to your servant your promise,
    that you may be feared.
39 Turn away the reproach that I dread,
    for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I long for your precepts;
    in your righteousness give me life!

From where does our power to keep God's commands come?  Does it come from our own ability and our own will?  NO!  Do we somehow get better at it on our own as we practice?  NO!

Then how do we keep God's commands if it isn't from our own power and ability?  It is from God!  God gives us understanding!  God leads us in the right path.  God inclines our heart to his testimonies.  God turns our eyes from worthless things.  He gives us life in his ways.  I could go on through the rest of the passage, but I think you get the point.

If you want to serve God then let go of yourself, your own selfish ambitions, your own self righteousness, your pride, and let the Holy Spirit rule in your heart and life!  Pray to him this prayer from David and then get out of the way!

Most importantly, realize that while you are here on this earth in your mortal body, your mind and body will be fighting against it the whole way.  Realize that your spirit and body will be fighting against each other until the coming of the Lord Jesus.  So the best thing you can do to serve God and to be a witness to Christ is to humble yourself enough to every day, continually confess your sins, turn from them, and be forgiven!  That indeed, is the way of the Lord!

Prayer, Lord, teach me your ways, lead me in your paths, fill me with your Spirit, and then do your will in and through me.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  (Note: I don't know what happened yesterday… I guess I didn't have enough coffee, but I used the wrong reading yesterday.  Here's the reading I should've used yesterday.)

1 Corinthians 3:1-9   English Standard Version (ESV)

Divisions in the Church

But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not being merely human?

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building.

I love this passage as a pastor, because it shows the fickleness of human beings and how easily we can get sidetracked.  Paul didn't care whether the people were on his "side" or Apollos's side, or that they followed any particular person as long as they heard the good news and believed in Christ as Savior and Lord.

We are such competitive, selfish, children sometimes.  Hear me clearly and fully!  St. John's Lutheran Church in Warrenton, Missouri is not in competition with any other Christian church!  As long as the church teaches the Trinity and that Jesus is Lord and Savior of all through His death and resurrection, it is a Christian church!

Other Christian churches may disagree with our teachings about such things as the authority of Scripture, the Sacraments, and many other things, but we are not in competition with them.  Therefore, we should not be trying to steal members from one church to make them members of ours.  We should not be putting down another church to prop up ours.

And let it also be known that I, as a pastor, just want you to be in worship so that you can hear the good news of Jesus and His salvation and so that you can receive His gifts of body and blood.  It is never about me!!  Don't make it about me.  Don't come to St. john's because of me, and please don't leave St. John's because of me.  I'm only a man.  Jesus is Lord and God!  Come because of Him!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me grace, and for the confidence I have in what I believe.  Grant my fellow Christians in other denominations that same peace that can only come from knowing you as Lord and Savior.  Amen.
