DEVOTION:  John 8:31-36 
"The Truth Will Set You Free"
³¹ So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, ³² and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." ³³ They answered him, "We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, 'You will become free'?"
³⁴ Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave^[a] to sin. ³⁵ The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. ³⁶ So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
 
What does it mean to be free?  I think it's harder for someone who has always been free to explain it, than it is for someone who hasn't.  Imagine that you are locked up behind bars for something stupid and illegal you did.  From the time you get up to the time you go to bed you are told what to do.  You have to eat at a certain time and eat what is set before you.  You can only take a shower when it is available and when the guards let you.  You can talk to the ones you love, but only once in a while and through channels, not directly.  The only way you are going to get out of it is to die. 
 
Now think of the freedom you have compared to that.  You have so many choices, yet because you are a sinful human being, you still often choose to be "enslaved" to sin.  The sinful body that you have tells you what to do, tells you what you want, and tells you where to go.  You are one of the "everyone who practices sin".  At the same time, there will come a day that you will "remain in the house forever."  The sin that enslaves you will one day be thrown off of you.  In fact, it already has been.  This is the freedom of Christ that you already have.  By the power of the Holy Spirit you are able to "throw off that sin that so easily entangles and run the race set before you."  You do this through daily confession, repentance and reception of forgiveness. 
 
As you throw off that sin, your heart and mind are refreshed and you can truly rest in peace while you are still alive.  Until Jesus comes back you are in this "already but not yet" state.  You are already free indeed, but your body is still holding you this earth.  On the day you die, or on the day Jesus comes back, you will throw off that sinful body and will receive a new sinless one that will stay that way forever. 
 
So I say, quit practicing sin.  Instead, practice confession, repentance, and forgiveness, because that is where true peace is found. 
 
Prayer: Lord, help me to realize that Your Son has set me free and that I am indeed free, so that I may quit practicing sin and being a slave to it.  Amen.

If anyone would like to help, but is not available on Oct 30, the following items could be done prior to that date:

 

1. Remove wooden enclosure that houses aluminum recycling

 

2. Trim bushes around church building

 

3. Cut down tree in the playground area]

 

4. Replace bulb and/or ballast in light by back door of preschool area

 

5. Clean the sink in the janitor's closet in the preschool area

 

6. Repair and/or replace exhaust fans in preschool bathrooms

For LEW FELDKAMP as he recovers from heart valve replacement surgery.

For NORM BELINSKY, a friend of Jim and Vickie McRae, who is dealing with cancer treatments.

 

For LOIS BOEGER'S MOM, who has been placed on hospice care due to cancer.  She is at home.

 

For DENNIS PERREY, who is recovering at home from a very serious tractor and brush hog accident.  He has 6 broken ribs, both lungs were punctured and, 2 vertebrae were cracked.

DEVOTION:  Romans 3:19-26

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. ²⁰ For by works of the law no human being^[a] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— ²² the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: ²³ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. ²⁶ It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
 
This statement from Paul, "The Law and the Prophets bear witness to it", is very important.  The "Law and the Prophets" is referring to the Old Testament which was already gathered together and would have been in almost every synagogue, but especially in the temple.  Now the Israelites (Jews) would be able to understand what Moses, Isaiah and all the other writers of the Old Testament were really talking about.
 
The whole Old Testament was and is about Jesus!  Everything, from Genesis through Malachi is about how we (as the people of God, the new Israel) fail and how the Lord has mercy on us and saves us.  The pivotal point comes in Jeremiah 31:31-34 when God proclaims that he will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and Judah and that he will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more. 
 
When we read the Old Testament, and the New Testament for that matter, with this new perspective, we begin to see things clearly, the way God intended.  It strengthens our faith and give us peace.  May you have peace today!
 
Prayer: Lord, thank you for revealing to us the purpose of the Holy Scriptures and for pointing the way to heaven through faith in Christ.  Amen.

Since I've been pretty busy the last few days, I told my Cody he should answer this one. (After all, it's THAT EASY!!!)

So, here's Cody's answer:

Capernaum: (from Wiki, because he is a dog, after all!) was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500. Archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other. A house turned into a church by the Byzantines is said to be the home of Saint Peter. It's geolocation is: 32.88111° N, 35.575° E

From Sandy Robine: Capernaum was a small city on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.  It was the town that Jesus used for his "work place base".  I got the impression that he wasn't crazy about this place though.

DEVOTION: Revelation 14:6-7⁶ Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. ⁷ And he said with a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water."
 
This is the First reading for Reformation Sunday.  Why?  Because it speaks of the "Eternal Gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth."  The GOSPEL is what the Reformation was all about, and what it is still about 499 years later.  Next year we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.  In 1517, on All Hallows Eve (Halloween), Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses (If you don't know what the 95 theses are you're not a real Lutheran.  hehe Just google it.) to the Castle church door in Wittenberg where he was a professor.  It set off a firestorm that would not be quenched.  Our church is a product of it.  Your real, authentic, grace based faith is a product of it. 
 
Because of the Holy Spirit working through the Word and bringing the Gospel to light in and through Luther, you have the Gospel, the good news that Jesus suffered, died and rose again to take away your sins.  Before Luther the New Testament was only in Latin.  Luther translated it into German.  Before Luther only the priest had the knowledge of Scripture and they usually kept it for themselves.  After Luther, all people had the opportunity to know the Gospel and all of God's Word fully!
 
The world is still full of people who have not heard the truth of the Gospel. It is full of people who are going to hell unless they hear and believe the good news.  We have the same opportunities that Luther did.  We are able, just among our own sphere of influence, to give the Gospel to those who are perishing eternally without it. 
 
Get to work!  Be intentional about inviting people to worship!  Get to worship yourself!  Care for people in their times of need so that you may have a way into their heart to share the good news.  Love people!  FORGIVE PEOPLE!!  Give that peace that passes all understanding!  Get to work and share the Gospel so that the whole number of believers will be achieved and Jesus can finally come back and restore everything to what it should be. 
 
Prayer: Holy Spirit, move my heart, hands, feet, and mouth to bring the Gospel to the whole earth.  Amen.

I especially like the verse that says, "The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters his voice, the earth melts." 

 

Sometimes we get so caught up in the world, that we forget about who's really in charge.  All God would have to do is speak and the whole earth would melt and be gone.  In fact, one day, judgment day, he will.  He will speak and the whole earth will be done.  We, who believe in him, will be caught up in the air with the saints who have already gone to heaven and we will meet the Lord in the air.  Then the Lord will bring forth the new earth, a restored earth that is perfect, beyond our knowledge or understanding. 

 

In a turbulent and seemingly out of control world, and as we await an election that doesn't seem right or good for anyone, we need to remember that the Lord is in charge, that he is our fortress, that he is our ever present help in times of trouble, that he will never leave us or forsake us. 

 

We need to remember that there will come a day when he will rescue us from this earth, either as we take our last breath or when we he comes back, whichever comes first.  Whatever the case, there is no need to freak out.  There is no need to despair as if we are lost and condemned.  There is nothing we need to fear, because the Lord is our fortress, our refuge, and our strength and he is impenetrable and sure!

 

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for being our sure and certain refuge and strength.  Fill us with joy and peace as we look to you for our life both here on earth and eternally in paradise.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  QUIZ:    How are John the Baptist and Jesus related to each other?  cousins  (or if you want the complete answer, here it is from Pat King)

In the gospel of Luke (Luke 1:36) it says their mothers were relatives. In the King James version, it was translated as 'cousins.' But since the term 'cousin,' was used to refer to any relative outside your immediate family back in the 17th century when the KJV was written, you can take that translation with a grain of salt. They could have been cousins, or – because of the age difference between the two women – Elisabeth could have very well, been Mary's aunt. (Only way we'd know for sure was if we had a copy of both woman's lineage – which we don't have.)

So, if Elisabeth was Mary's aunt, then John and Jesus would have been 1st cousins. If, on the other hand, Mary and Elisabeth had been cousins, then John and Jesus would have still been cousins – just a bit further removed.

 

Or – if you want to get real technical here – because all of God's people become His children through the rite of Holy Baptism, and Jesus is both God and man, then Jesus is John's father.

And that's the fact!

1. Remove wooden enclosure that houses aluminum recycling

 

2. Trim bushes around church building

 

3. Cut down tree in the playground area]

 

4. Replace bulb and/or ballast in light by back door of preschool area

 

5. Clean the sink in the janitor's closet in the preschool area

 

6. Repair and/or replace exhaust fans in preschool bathrooms

"The Pharisee and the Tax Collector"
⁹ He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: ¹⁰ "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed^[a] thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' ¹³ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. What kind of a faith do you have?  Is it one that, even just a little bit, trusts in yourself?  If it is, then you have the wrong kind of faith.  Faith in self is misplaced faith.  Faith in the Lord; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is a real and solid faith. 
 
You fail every day.  The Lord doesn't fail every day.  You disappoint every day, because you could always do better, you could always be better at something, you could always serve God more, you could always do more.  You will never do enough. 
 
That's why we REST in Jesus.  We don't work for Jesus.  We don't work for our own salvation.  We trust in Jesus for our salvation, and because we have that rest, we are free to serve God by the power of the Holy Spirit!
 
One of my most favorite things, and something that I miss a lot, about when my kids were little is when they would fall asleep on my lap or in my arms.  They felt safe and secure with me.  They knew they could trust me to take care of them.  They had faith that I was going to bring them to bed and keep them safe through the night. 
 
We can rest in the lap and arms of Jesus in the very same way.  He will keep us safe from Satan.  He will bring us to eternal life with Him.  Though this world, and Satan destroy our body, our souls are safe in the arms of Jesus. 
 
That's what Jesus means when he says "....receive the kingdom of God like a little child." 
 
Prayer: Lord, help me to receive your kingdom like a little child and to rest in your arms forever.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  QUIZ:    What is the diaspora?  (Thanks Pat)

Okay, if you insist. Fist of all, 'diaspora' is NOT some kind of mushroom spore. I know this for a fact, because my crazy brother tried growing them for a while.

Anyway it has to do with a group of people being dispersed from one area (their native homeland) to another. Usually, it refers to people who are forced into exile – like the Jews into Babylon.

 

• Deuteronomy 28:25, in the phrase ἔσῃ ἐν διασπορᾷ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις τῆς γῆς, esē en diaspora en pasais tais basileiais tēs gēs, translated to mean "thou shalt be a dispersion in all kingdoms of the earth" and secondly in
• Psalms 146(147).2, in the phrase οἰκοδομῶν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ὁ Kύριος καὶ τὰς διασπορὰς τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπισυνάξει, oikodomōn Ierousalēm ho Kyrios kai tas diasporas tou Israēl episynaxē, translated to mean "The Lord doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel".

So after the Bible's translation into Greek, the word Diaspora would then have been used to refer to the Northern Kingdom exiled between 740-722 BC from Israel by the Assyrians, as well as Jews, Benjaminites, and Levites exiled from the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE by the Babylonians, and from Roman Judea in 70 CE by the Roman Empire. It subsequently came to be used to refer to the historical movements of the dispersed ethnic population of Israel, to the cultural development of that population or to that population itself. In English when capitalized and without modifiers (that is simply, the Diaspora), the term refers specifically to the Jewish diaspora; when uncapitalized the word diaspora may be used to refer to refugee or immigrant populations of other origins or ethnicities living "away from an established or ancestral homeland". The wider application of diaspora evolved from the Assyrian two-way mass deportation policy of conquered populations to deny future territorial claims on their part.
