DEVOTION:  Luke 18:9-17  English Standard Version (ESV)

"The Pharisee and the Tax Collector"
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed[a] thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

"Let the Children Come to Me"
15 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it."

What kind of a faith do you have?  Is it one that, even just a little bit, trusts in yourself?  If it is, then you have the wrong kind of faith.  Faith in self is misplaced faith.  Faith in the Lord; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is a real and solid faith.

You fail every day.  The Lord doesn't fail every day.  You disappoint every day, because you could always do better, you could always be better at something, you could always serve God more, you could always do more.  You will never do enough.

That's why we REST in Jesus.  We don't work for Jesus.  We don't work for our own salvation.  We trust in Jesus for our salvation, and because we have that rest, we are free to serve God by the power of the Holy Spirit!

One of my most favorite things, and something that I miss a lot, about when my kids were little is when they would fall asleep on my lap or in my arms.  They felt safe and secure with me.  They knew they could trust me to take care of them.  They had faith that I was going to bring them to bed and keep them safe through the night.

We can rest in the lap and arms of Jesus in the very same way.  He will keep us safe from Satan.  He will bring us to eternal life with Him.  Though this world, and Satan destroy our body, our souls are safe in the arms of Jesus.

That's what Jesus means when he says "....receive the kingdom of God like a little child."

Prayer: Lord, help me to receive your kingdom like a little child and to rest in your arms forever.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  QUIZ:    What is the diaspora?  (Thanks Pat)
Okay, if you insist. Fist of all, 'diaspora' is NOT some kind of mushroom spore. I know this for a fact, because my crazy brother tried growing them for a while.
Anyway it has to do with a group of people being dispersed from one area (their native homeland) to another. Usually, it refers to people who are forced into exile – like the Jews into Babylon.

  • Deuteronomy 28:25, in the phrase ἔσῃ ἐν διασπορᾷ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις τῆς γῆς, esē en diaspora en pasais tais basileiais tēs gēs, translated to mean "thou shalt be a dispersion in all kingdoms of the earth" and secondly in
  • Psalms 146(147).2, in the phrase οἰκοδομῶν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ὁ Kύριος καὶ τὰς διασπορὰς τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπισυνάξει, oikodomōn Ierousalēm ho Kyrios kai tas diasporas tou Israēl episynaxē, translated to mean "The Lord doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel".
So after the Bible's translation into Greek, the word Diaspora would then have been used to refer to the Northern Kingdom exiled between 740-722 BC from Israel by the Assyrians, as well as Jews, Benjaminites, and Levites exiled from the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE by the Babylonians, and from Roman Judea in 70 CE by the Roman Empire. It subsequently came to be used to refer to the historical movements of the dispersed ethnic population of Israel, to the cultural development of that population or to that population itself. In English when capitalized and without modifiers (that is simply, the Diaspora), the term refers specifically to the Jewish diaspora; when uncapitalized the word diaspora may be used to refer to refugee or immigrant populations of other origins or ethnicities living "away from an established or ancestral homeland". The wider application of diaspora evolved from the Assyrian two-way mass deportation policy of conquered populations to deny future territorial claims on their part.

DEVOTION:  2 Timothy 4:6-8English Standard Version (ESV)
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

As Paul is writing this, he has some sense that the end is near for him.  We don't know how he knows this, maybe it's just a hunch, maybe God revealed it to him, or maybe he was really sick and just knew.  Whatever the case, he felt that the end of his life was coming soon.

But that doesn't stop him from living the way God had called him to live.  He is still confessing Christ.  He is still proclaiming the good news and encouraging Timothy, and he is professing what is going to happen to him when he dies, which is the best witness of all.  He says things like,
henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness", and "The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom."

What a great example he is to us.  We need to be that same example to others.  When things go wrong, when relationships go sour, when we can't seem to do the things we used to do, and when our world is falling apart all around us, the best thing we can do is what Paul did and show the peace of Christ in our words and actions.  By our own peace we can bring peace to others, especially when they are dealing with insurmountable odds.  We can be the best witness when we face death head on with the mercy, grace, and peace of Christ!

Let's pray:  Lord, help me to be a witness especially in times of trouble so that people may see the peace I have through you and receive that peace as well.  Amen.

It is a collection of 27 books that many, including the Roman Catholic Church, hold as sacred writings. There are all sorts of different genres and lengths of these writings.  They were never included in either the Old or New Testament and are not to be considered sacred writings by us.

DEVOTION:  Genesis 4:1-16 (ESV)
"Cain and Abel"

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord." And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to[c] you, but you must rule over it."

Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" 10 And the Lord said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." 13 Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment is greater than I can bear.[e] 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." 15 Then the Lord said to him, "Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden

Evidently, Abel gave his offering from the heart and Cain just out of obligation.  How much off your day do you spend doing things out of obligation instead of doing it with the sense of honoring the Lord with your heart?  Probably a lot, right?  I know I do.

We are all sinful like Cain.  Yet, because the Holy Spirit lives in us we are able to serve the Lord with our heart.  Our offerings, therefore, can and should be given with the heart.  2 Corinthians 9:7 says "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

If you decide in your heart to not giving an offering at all, that's so much worse, because then you have no joy in your heart toward God.

Cain hated God and so he took it out on his brother.  He had no love for God.  He had no regard for God so God had no regard for him.  When God convicted Cain of his sin, Cain finally repented, and God gave him grace.  Cain was afraid that someone would take revenge on him and kill him, but God put a mark on him so no one would.  We don't know what the mark was, maybe it was the first tattoo, maybe it was a big birthmark, we don't know.  Whatever it was, when people saw it, they knew not to harm Cain.

God has marked us too by baptism and through His Word and Sacraments.  We are marked for eternal life.   Satan cannot harm us.  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for marking us even though we don't deserve it.  Make us to give generously and with a joyful heart, because that is the kind of offering you regard and accept.  Amen.

Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 5  "To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David."

Give ear to my words, O Lord;
    consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you do I pray.
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[a] and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

In this passage we see a definite contrast between those who trust in the Lord and those who trust in themselves, between the Lord's will and way and the world's will and way.

The trouble is that we live in both.  We live in Christ and in the world.  We are free in Christ, but still able to be tempted.  We are not of the world, but we still live in the world.  I guess, in this way, we are experiencing what Christ experienced, although imperfectly.  Christ lived in this world and was tempted in every way, but al2ways resisted and never fell into temptation.  We fall into temptation on a constant and continual basis.

With God those two things cannot dwell together.  There cannot be evil and righteousness in the presence of Almighty God.  He doesn't allow evil to  exist in his presence!

So we cry out to God and say "Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness."  and "Make your way straight before me."  We ask God to do this for us while we are here on earth so that we can live in Him and rest in His grace until the day we receive the blessings and benefits of the victory that has already been won.  Until then, take refuge in Him, rejoice in Him and sing for joy, because the victory is already yours in Christ alone.

Let us pray:  As I have one foot in heaven and one on earth, keep me safe from my enemy, the devil, give me joy and peace while I survive in this world, and take me home to you as soon as you see fit, according to your will.  Amen.
