DEVOTION: Psalm 119:81-88 (ESV)
"Kaph"  (Note: In Psalm 119 every section starts with another letter of the alphabet.  "Kaph" is the equivalent to our letter K.)

81 My soul longs for your salvation;
    I hope in your word.
82 My eyes long for your promise;
I ask, "When will you comfort me?"
83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
84 How long must your servant endure?[a]
When will you judge those who persecute me?
85 The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;
they do not live according to your law.
86 All your commandments are sure;
they persecute me with falsehood; help me!
87 They have almost made an end of me on earth,
but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 In your steadfast love give me life,
that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

I love the imagery that says "I have become like a wineskin in the smoke."  What does that look like: old, leathery, tired, hard, worn out?  It isn't good.

If you've lived long enough on this earth there will be times in your life that will plain wear you out.  You will go through struggles in relationships that will cause you sleepless nights and lots of worry.  Your kids will give you gray hair.  Your own sin will cause you grief and anguish.  You will indeed become like a wineskin in the smoke.

It is in the middle of all this that we "long" for His salvation and "long" for his promise.  Have you ever wondered why most churches are filled with older people?  It is because in their wisdom, which they have received from living a long life and going through all sorts of troubles, they see the need for Jesus.  They know the purpose of worship and the fellowship of the saints.  They see the joy of God's salvation.  When you're younger and haven't gone through the stuff that older folks have you don't see the need.

My prayer for you is that you see the purpose and the need for worship before you truly need it like it looks like David needs it today in your Psalm.  I pray that you find the purpose for worship and for fellowship in the church while you still have joy and peace so that you don't desire it without having it, because you've been neglecting it.

Don't just "long" for his salvation and his promise.  Know that you have it!  Know that it is yours in Christ Jesus!  Know that he loves you with an everlasting love!  And know that you'll always find it and receive it in the worship and fellowship of the saints at St. John's!

Prayer: Lord, bless us as we long for the fulfillment of your salvation and wait for your promise fulfilled when you come again to judge the living and the dead and restore your kingdom fully.  Until then, give us patience and peace in knowing that we already have all of your gifts in Christ Jesus.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Luke 12:22-40 (ESV)
"Do Not Be Anxious"
22 And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[a] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[b] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his[c] kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
32 "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

"You Must Be Ready"
35 "Stay dressed for action[d] and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants[e] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he[f] would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."

I know quite a few people who have severe anxiety disorder.  It is a disease of the brain that causes panic attacks, depression, and a myriad other troubles.  It is an uncontrollable defect in the brain caused by chemical imbalances.  It usually isn't rooted in any particular circumstance.  In other words, circumstances can be fine and there be no imminent danger or anything wrong, but the person with anxiety disorder, because of their chemical imbalances, sees things differently.

There is no "calming down".  There is no "just pray more".  There is no "just stop it", take a deep breath, etc. when it comes to anxiety.  Believe me, I've learned the hard way by trying to "counsel" people who have it.

The "worry" that Jesus is talking about in the passage above is not the same as those who have anxiety disorder.  The worry Jesus is talking about is, in essence, sin against the first commandment as a person puts more emphasis on and relies more on the gifts instead of the giver.  It is the same thing as when we hear him say "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil."

In this one sin there are two extremes. There are those who have it good.  They're comfortable.  They're full.  They have all they need, and so they begin to be dependent upon the stuff as they use it for their comfort, satisfaction, and safety.  On the other hand there are those who are lacking, the poor, and those who are going without.  In them we find those who are constantly searching and looking for more wealth.  You'll find them stealing.  You'll find them at the convenience store buy hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets.  You'll find them searching for comfort, satisfaction, and safety everywhere but where it truly may be found.

You don't have to have anxiety disorder to "worry" about your life.  I know a lot of people who are completely mentally stable and yet commit this sin every day.  I must confess that I am one of them.

Jesus is calling us to repentance with his message today.  He wants us to quit relying on the "economy" and start relying on him for our peace, satisfaction, security, safety, and comfort.  Let's repent of our anxiousness because of our want, and rest in God's eternal mercy and grace!

Prayer: Lord, I confess that I have been anxious about my life, what I will eat, wear and do.  Help me to rest my weary and heavy burdened mind and heart in you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ  Who was Nabpolassar

Once again, an easy-peasy quiz. But first, we need to clear up some misconceptions many of you may have.
    1) No, this is NOT a new model of Nissan. I used to drive a Pulsar by Nissan, and this is not their replacement model.
    2) No, this is NOT a Pokemon thingamajig. I don't play Pokemon Go, but I assure you this is not one of their thingies. So don't run around town looking for this.
    3) He – and he was a he – was NOT, nor is, a Klingon warlord. I know, there are Trekkies out there, who swear he is, but they are Romulan agents. For sure!
No, Nabbie – which is Chaldean for "Nabu, protect the son!" – was the 1st king of the Chaldean dynasty, the king of Babylon (626 –605 BC) and dad to Nebuchadnezzar II.
And there you have it!

DEVOTION: Hebrews 11:1-16 (ESV)

"By Faith"

11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

There are about 100 sermons in this one little section of Scripture.  I wish we knew who the human writer of this book is.  I would thank him over and over again for this wonderful theology!

If you want a perfect definition of what it means to have faith in God, read verse 1.

If you want to know how the Old Testament people were (and are) saved, read verse 2.

Those who think that God didn't create the universe.  Just read verse 3.

Those who don't know why Abel's sacrifice was accepted and Cain's wasn't, read verse 4.

Those who don't know why Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying, read vs. 5.

If you want to know what kind of works please God and which ones don't, read verse 6.

If you want to know why God saved Noah and his family read verse 7.

If you want to know why God picked Abraham to be the father of as many nations as the stars in the sky, read verses 8-12

If you want to know if the people in the Old Testament, who had faith in God's promises, are in heaven, read verses 13-16.

ALL OF THIS IS BY FAITH AND BECAUSE OF FAITH!

We are saved because we believe in and understand Christ's teachings.  We have faith in what Jesus did!  We have faith that what he did, by dying on the cross and rising from the dead, he did FOR US!!

Faith in a loving God who sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die on a cross FOR ME AND FOR YOU, is what separates us from all other religions.  The Old Testament faithful didn't depend on themselves or their good works any more than we should depend on ourselves or our good works.  Everything has already been done for us and all we need to do is accept it by faith!

That real and true faith will then work itself out in a life lived in God's grace, which shows itself to others in love and forgiveness.  Let's live BY FAITH today!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for making all of your gifts ones that can only be received BY FAITH.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: How old was Josiah when he became king, and how long did he reign?

8 years old and 31 years  (Thanks DOUG HERZOG!)

Here's a more lengthy answer with some additional information from Pat King:

So, I'll keep this simple today, since no one has bothered to write any cute songs, with Joe as their lead. Anyway.... He became king when his dad was killed. He was 8 years old at the time. And he died when he was 39, so technically, his reign lasted 31 years. But for the first part of his 'legal' reign, he was hidden by the priests – mostly because members of his father's court were the ones who had offed him. Plus, back then – as now – he was considered too young to rule, so others did it  for him. Anyway, although he was brought up in a pagan household, he 'found' God by the time he was 15 and started cleaning house. He is considered to be one of the greatest kings since David.

Here's a nifty article about him:

DEVOTION: Genesis 15:1-6 (ESV)

"God's Covenant with Abram"

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[a] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir." And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: "This man shall not be your heir; your very own son[b] shall be your heir." And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

I'm not sure why we question God's promises as much as we do.  I take that back... I am sure.  We question God, because we judge his promises according to our experiences with people.  People, our children, our spouse, our boss, our coworkers, our pastor.... every human being will let us down.  Even we, ourselves, will mess up and fail to keep all the promises we have made.

Abram was doing the same thing.  He was evaluating God's promise to give him an heir according to his experiences with mere humans.  Didn't he know who he was talking to?  Do we forget who we are hearing when we hear or read God's Word?

God hasn't promised you a million dollars.  He hasn't promised you that you would be great and powerful.  He hasn't promised that you will live a peaceful and easy life.  SO don't even think that God is giving you a raw deal when bad things happen to you.

On the other hand, he promised to Abraham and to all the generations afterward that he would send his one and only Son .... AND HE DID!  He promised that he would forgive our wickedness and forget our sins..... AND HE DID!  He promised that he would rise on the third day..... AND HE DID!  He promised that he will come back and take us to be where he is... AND HE WILL.  He promised that he will come again to judge the living and the dead and restore his kingdom to what he intended before the fall... AND HE WILL!!

Trust his promises for the sole reason that HE IS GOD.  He is not a mere human who fails.  He is God and he always does what he says he is going to do.  Trust in Him and have peace in His most certain promises of eternal life for you!

Prayer: Lord, when I doubt you, because of my experiences with this fallen creation, put away my fear and doubt and replace it with your peace and joy.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ Where is the Valley of Ben Hinnom?

Right next to Ben's Hill. Hence, the reason it's called his Valley. Well, duh!
But, again, with 2 answers.
1) the Hebrew name is Gehinnom (Rabbinical: גהנום/גהנם), which translates to hell or purgatory for the Jews. So, if you know where hell is, you know where this valley is. Anyway, it started off as a place where Jews liked to sacrifice their kids to fire. Hence, the analogy to hell.
2) The actual place – and it is a place, who knew! – is the valley surrounding Jerusalem's Old City. It includes Mount Zion, from the west and south. It meets and merges with the Kidron Valley – which is the other main valley around the Old City, near the southeastern corner of the city.

BTW, this is the place associated with the potter's field the priests bought with those 30 pieces of silver they had initially give to Judas to betray Christ. It is also the place where he killed himself.

Here's a nifty article about the place, from an Israeli tourism site:
