DEVOTION: Psalm 100 (ESV)

"His Steadfast Love Endures Forever"  A Psalm for giving thanks.

100 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
    Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;[a]
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

What does a joyful noise sound like?  Is it yelling and cheering?  Is it melodic praise?  Is it a "yippee" or a "Hallelujah"?   Or is it something different?

People express joy in all sorts of different ways.  At times it may even sound like a sigh of relief or a gasp of air when we are in dire straits.  It may look like a person down on their knees in thanksgiving after being given a much needed gift from God.

Whatever it looks like, there is one place you are sure to find people making joyful noises to the Lord. You will definitely see this in worship at St. John's.  It may not always sound like the most melodic or harmonic noise in the world, but it is still joyful.  It is joyful, because we are a joyful people.  We are joyful, because the Lord is our God, He loves us, forgives us, and gives us eternal life.  We are joyful, because, even though we are sinful human beings and each of us is a flawed sinner, we have been made holy by the precious blood of Jesus!

Are you missing that joy?  Has your life been stale?  Is your life void of the joy of Christ?  Do you long for that joy again?  Then, maybe it's time for you to get back into worship, or if you are already in worship, repent of your sin, release all of those outside influences, and surrender your heart to the Lord in worship so that the Holy Spirit may give you the joy you need!

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for filling me with joy despite living in this world of sadness.  Help me to live in that joy so that others may have the joy they need as well as they see it, hear it, and experience it from me.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ  Put or Pul (Hebrew) was a nation in the Middle East?  What is it called today?

Cush and Phut (Put)
These two were sons of Ham and brothers to Mizraim (which means "two Egypts") and Canaan. Narrowly they are called Ethiopia (Cush) and Lybia (Put) but both were in possession of much larger territory in the past. The word Cush has a Hebrew root meaning black, and can be representative of the black races of Africa, while Put can represent the north part of the continent; Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, etc. Note that all are sons of Ham and therefore not Semitic. The common denominator among African nations is religion (Islam) not race (Arab).

DEVOTION:  Luke 11:1-13 (ESV)

"The Lord's Prayer"

11 Now Jesus[a] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." And he said to them, "When you pray, say:

"Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,[b]
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation."

And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything'? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[c] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for[d] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

"Good Gifts"
Jesus gave us a prayer to pray for a reason. He wants us to remember who He is and what He has done for us.  he wants us to remember that He is our heavenly Father.  He wants us to remember that He is in heaven and that He can't wait for us to get there and that he can't wait to restore His kingdom.  He wants you to remember that all of our daily blessings, the things that keep us alive, are from Him.  He wants us to remember that he forgives our sins completely and so we must forgive the sins of others.  He protects us from the evil one and, if we look to His will, He will keep us from temptation.  He wants us to remember that this earth is his kingdom although the people over whom he benevolently rules, are obstinate, hate him, and deny his authority and rule.

The Lord's prayer is not some magical incantation that turns on God's giving switch.  He isn't like our mommy, waiting for us to say "Pleeeeaaassseee" before He gives us what we need.  He gives us all the things we pray for in the Lord's Prayer without our asking, because He is a good, good Father.  Yet, we ask for our own good.  We ask because we need to hear ourselves ask.  We pray to be reminded that we have a Father who loves us and gives us these things.  We pray for our own good.  Prayer is a gift from God.  He commands it, just like he commands the commands the commandments, because he knows that to live according to His will is good for us.

So, if you are wondering what to pray, or you are at a loss for words, pray the Lord's prayer.  Pray it with your heart.  Pause at each phrase and remember how God has already done all of these things for you.  Pray it with your heart knowing that God is a loving father and he will hear you and give you what you need.

Let us pray:  Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ What do Hephzibah and Beulah from Isaiah 62:4 mean?

So to answer this one, I looked up different translations of the actual passage.

New International Version
No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married.

So, that's the original passage. Here are 2 translations:

New Living Translation
Never again will you be called "The Forsaken City" or "The Desolate Land." Your new name will be "The City of God's Delight" and "The Bride of God," for the LORD delights in you and will claim you as his bride.

New American Standard Bible
It will no longer be said to you, "Forsaken," Nor to your land will it any longer be said, "Desolate"; But you will be called, "My delight is in her," And your land, "Married"; For the LORD delights in you, And to Him your land will be married.

 DEVOTION:  Colossians 2:6-19
"Alive in Christ"
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits[a] of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities[b] and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.[c]

"Let No One Disqualify You"
16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions,[d] puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

Last night I watched the National Youth Gathering mass event, and at that mass event Pastor Greg Manning spoke of how Jesus cancelled the debt for us.

Manning was abused by his stepfather when he was a kid.  Eventually, they got away from him and Manning grew up to be a pastor, but he still had bitterness and anger toward his stepfather.  Eventually he came to the realization that he wouldn't be whole, he wouldn't be fully healed or at peace until he forgave his stepfather.  So one day he called his stepfather, he said it was the hardest phone call he ever had to make.  He called him and told him he forgave him.  He told his stepfather that he didn't owe him anything.  he didn't owe him an apology.  He didn't owe him year's worth of good deeds and love to make it up to him.  He didn't owe him anything, because he didn't owe Christ anything.  You read that right.  This boy who was abused and grew up with that bitterness, anger, and fear was able to forgive the man who abused him because Christ forgave him.

Manning also said that the greatest witness we, as the church of Christ, have is the gift of forgiveness.  It is a gift that is contrary to the way of the world.  It is foreign to our human way of thinking, but because of the Holy Spirit living in us and working through his word and sacraments  we have and know this gift fully!  We know it and so God has given us the ability and responsibility to give it to others!  What a gift!

If we are to grow as a church and if we are to continue as a church in the next 100 years it is going to be because God offers and gives the forgiveness of sins through it!  It is going to be because of the forgiveness of sins we have and give!

No one owes you anything.  No one owes you an apology.  No one owes you a good word or good deed.  And you don't owe God anything either!  Live free and clear in God's grace and give that freedom of forgiveness to others!

Let us pray: Lord, help me to remember that because you canceled my debt I am able to cancel the debt of those who have sinned against me.  Make me a debt canceler in your name.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ What does the word "Sabbath" mean?

It comes from the Hebrew word, Shabbat, meaning a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The word "Shabbat" itself, comes from the root Shin-Beit-Tav, meaning to cease, to end, or to rest.

Here's 2 articles you can read, if you'd like to learn more: http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/sabbath/  and http://www.jewfaq.org/shabbat.htm
