PUBLISHED BY THE MISSOURI DISTRICT OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH—MISSOURI SYNOD July 15, 2016
Zion Lutheran Appreciates Local Firefighters!

The members of Zion Lutheran Church, Poplar Bluff showed their appreciation to their local firefighters! Over the course of three days in June, three groups of members assembled and delivered treats (pastries, candies, and fruit) and "Armor of God" medallions (based on Ephesians 6:11-18) to 27 Poplar Bluff city and seven Butler County Firefighters. Those participating had a great time and the firefighters were very appreciative. This event was organized by the congregation's Faith In Action (FIA) group, dedicated to putting their faith into action inside and outside the congregation through various mission projects and acts of mercy.

'Participating' in the LCMS Youth Gathering from afar

Tens of thousands of youth and adults from across the country and around the world are expected to descend on New Orleans for the 2016 LCMS Youth Gathering, July 16-20. This is the largest gathering of LCMS youth and adults, hosted by the Synod every three years.

While many will be there, not everyone can attend. There are some ways to participate in the Gathering from afar.

Orientation Equips 18 Overseas Missionaries For Service
Taken from the Reporter and written by Jane Haas

New overseas missionaries — who will be serving in 11 countries — pose for a group photo with LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, center, during the June 13-24 orientation at the Synod's International Center in St. Louis. (LCMS/Erik M. Lunsford)

"God equipd the called!"

Jamielynn Tinkey used those words when Reporter asked about her two weeks of orientation for the new, worldwide missionaries at the LCMS International Center June 13-24 here. "Nothing is impossible with God's help," she added.

Tinkey is one of 18 missionaries, their five spouses and nine children who spent time with Synod leaders learning more about their upcoming overseas service and building relationships with one another.  Read more . . .

DEVOTION: Luke 10:38-42 (ESV)
"Martha and Mary"
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus[a] entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[b] Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."

If there is any passage in all of Scripture that clearly defines what's important, it's this one.  It's not what you do for Christ.  It's what Christ does and has done for you!  Do you get it?  Do you really get it?

One of the biggest strengths and greatest weaknesses of this nation is our idea of success.  We are all about working hard and doing all that you can to succeed in life.  That's a strength.  The trouble is what we define as success.  We think success is having the most of everyone else in the room and being the most important person in the room.  We think success is getting a college education and then a good enough job so that we can amass a great collection of stuff.  We think that success means that everyone else will look up to  us, because we are at the top.

Martha thought that Jesus' visit wouldn't be a success unless everyone in her house felt comfortable and their bellies were full.  Jesus knew that the success of his visit only depended on what they all heard from him, namely the Gospel.  Martha thought it depended on what everyone thought and believed about her.  Jesus knew that it depended on what they knew and believed about him.

The rich man dies just as much as the poor man.  The important man dies just as much as the lowly man.  What matters?  The heart matters!  And if the heart belongs to Jesus, that's all that matters!

If you are concerned about many things in place of or instead of Jesus, it's time to repent.  You have concerned yourself with many things.  Mary has chosen the one thing needful.  You can choose that one thing needful too!  You can choose to take time out of your busy schedule, in fact, to rearrange your schedule, around time for Jesus!  Do it today!

Sit at the feet of Jesus and rest!

Let us pray: Lord, ease my mind as I concern myself with too many things.  Help me to meditate on the one thing needful, on You.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ  What does the name "Isaiah" mean?

Easy answer: it means, "I say ah!" An expression some people exclaim after getting a massage, or having a cold beer. But since Old testament dudes didn't have beer, I'm guessing we can dismiss that answer.
So, if you ask the Jews what they think, here's their answer:

The name Isaiah consists of two parts: The final part is יה or יהו, both abbreviated forms of יהוה; YHWH or Yahweh.
The first part of the name Isaiah comes from the root-verb ישע (yasha'), meaning to be saved or delivered:

Which is a lot of blah, blah, blah for God is salvation. And there you have it.

DEVOTION: Colossians 1:21-29 (ESV)
21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation[a] under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Believe it or not, there are people who call themselves Christians, that think that the reason Christ came to earth, suffered, and died was just to show us how to live.  They think that our only purpose is to live like Christ lived.  Not only is that wrong, it is impossible.

We can't live how Christ lives, because Christ was perfect.  Now, just as we have many of the traits of our parents, we have some of the same traits as Christ, because we have been born again in Him by baptism and through faith.  But we can never be like Him, because he was without sin.

Not only that, the other more important thing is that Christ didn't come just to show us how to live.  He came to save us.  He came, in the words of Paul here in his letter to the Colossians, "he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him".  That's why he came.  He came so that you could enter His eternal presence.  He came, because without him you would remain hostile in mind and evil in His sight.

Jesus is more than a good example.  He is more than a good teacher.  He is your maker, redeemer, sanctifier, and Lord.  He is your everything.  He is your Savior.  He is God!  Honor Him as such today!  Give Him the glory today!  Repent and rearrange your life so it reflects what you really know and believe about Jesus, the Son of God!

Prayer: Lord, help me always to proclaim that you are more than just a good guy.   You are God, You are Lord, and You are my Savior.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ  Name a chapter or verse in Isaiah that talks about the coming Messiah, namely Jesus.

Well, even a blind man could do this one, since the whole 2nd half of the book of Isaiah is essentially about the coming Messiah. But for specific verses, here's a quickie list:

And here's a nifty article that talks about the book of Isaiah: http://www.jesusplusnothing.com/studies/online/Isaiah40.htm
It's interesting to note that the book of Isaiah itself is a reflection of what has become our Bible. The first part of his book is about God's law and judgment – just like the Old Testament. But the 2nd half shows God's love and grace; telling of His Christ. Thus, corresponding with the New Testament. Which is why some scholars refer to the 2nd half of the book of Isaiah as the 5th Gospel.

DEVOTION: Genesis 18:1-14 (ESV)

18 And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks[a] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, "O Lord,[b] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said." And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, "Quick! Three seahs[c] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes." And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent." 10 The Lord said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?" 13 The Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard[d] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son."

Sometimes we think things are too hard for the Lord.  Our feeble, simple minds forget that God is omnipotent and omniscient.  He knows the whole span of your life from beginning to end and he has your whole life in your hand.  Yet you think that there is something you can do to help God out?  You think that he is just sitting and waiting for you to be a good little boy or little girl?  Does that really make sense?

I heard someone say yesterday that God does miracles today just to remind people that he is around.  Indeed, He is still around!  He is more than just hanging around though.  He is active in your life and mine.  He is working everything out for our good.  His will is being done as we live and move in this seemingly endless world.

It is when we finally realize how active God is in our lives and how much we truly rely on him that we are able to step back, take a deep breath and relax.  Or as God himself says it, "Be still and know that I am God."

Don't laugh when God says he's going to do something in you or through you.  Don't laugh When you are thinking that God can't remove your sin from you.  Don't laugh when he takes you as feeble, or old, or young, or busy, or whatever you are; and uses you to do His will and perform miracles.  Don't laugh at God, because He might just do what he says.

Instead, when god says "go".... go!  When God says "stay".... stay!  When God says "be still"..... be still.  When God says "get to work".... get to work.  Follow His direction.  Don't give him directions.  Listen to Him.

Prayer: Lord, help me to surrender, to know that you can do all things, and that everything has been done for me in Christ.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ Who did Isaiah prophecy against?

(From Pat King)

First of all, these quizzes are open to EVERYONE. Just sayin'.

But to answer this question, Isaiah was originally aiming his prophecies against the nations surrounding Israel and Judah, that did not serve the Lord. Since, Israel and Judah were both, at that time, basically giving God the proverbial finger, by going their own idolatrous ways, it was also a warning to them to either repent and return to God, or be prepared to face His wrath. (the Babylonian exile)
Anyway, since God's word is eternal, it can also be seen as an indictment against our nation today. We too, are basically doing the same things the Jews did. So unless we return to the founding principles of our nation, we should be prepared to face God's judgment on us as a nation
