DEVOTION:  John 16:12-22   English Standard Version (ESV)12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
          16 "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me." 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" 18 So they were saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

There is so much about God that we still don't know.  He goes above our understanding.  That's what makes Him God and us humans.  We just have to wait for the day when He will make all things new (which we talked about yesterday) and then we will know everything there is to know.

When Jesus died the world rejoiced but the disciples mourned.  Three days later they rejoiced!  Then they were sad as they went through trials and tribulations and persecutions and even martyrdom for their faith, but now they rejoice completely totally forever.

The same is true for us.  We rejoice when we are reminded of the resurrection of Jesus, but we are still in a bit of pain as we struggle with sin, as we struggle with the world, and as we struggle just to stay alive some days.  We mourn at the loss of loved ones.  We mourn as people call things good that the Lord calls sin.  We mourn as we see our brothers and sisters across the world persecuted and martyred for their faith.  But we rejoice with those who have died in the faith as we believe in and find comfort in the communion of saints!

Just a little while longer, whether that is a day, a year, or a hundred years, it is just a blink of an eye compared to the eternity we will spend in paradise with Jesus!  Stay strong my friends!  Stay strong and finish the race!

Prayer: Lord, just a little while and we will see you face to face!  Help us to stay strong!  help us to finish he race.  Help us to stand firm in your Word and to trust you for all things. Amen.

DEVOTION:  Revelation 21:1-7   English Standard Version (ESV)
"The New Heaven and the New Earth"

21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place[a] of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,[b] and God himself will be with them as their God.[c] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Do you like new things?  I do.  Leftovers are ok, but there's not much better than a fresh baked new loaf of bread.  Everyone likes that shiny new car and the new car smell.  Waking up on a new day when things begin fresh and new is a wonderful feeling.  New clothes always look better than old clothes, although it takes a few times of washing and wearing before they are comfortable.

Now imagine that everything is new all the time.  That loaf of bread never gets old.  Your clothes are comfortable and new at the same time.  Your bones never creak or crack but are new and flexible like a young child.  Everything is new and even better, everything is perfect!

That is how eternal life is going to be for those who believe in Jesus and know that He loves them.  There will be no need for weeping or mourning, because no one will ever get hurt and no one will die.  There will be no need for confession or forgiveness, because there will be no sin.

Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world.  On the day of judgment, the Lord will unveil His eternal, holy city, the new Jerusalem.  He will reveal a new heavens (sky) and earth (a restoration of the garden of Eden).  When he does this all who belong in it, including us, will be in it.   You have troubles now.  You won't then!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer:  Lord, as we deal with the troubles of this world, give us Your joy as we live in Your forgiveness and peace now, and give us peace as we look forward to eternal life.   Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ   Psalms 1-35 are sometimes called "Psalms of the troubled soul".  What does this mean?

David most probably wrote them during his trouble with Saul and also through much of the trouble of his own doing with Bathsheba.   These Psalms are ones of anger, frustration, confession, and mourning.

DEVOTION: Acts 11:1-16  English Standard Version (ESV)
"Peter Reports to the Church"

11 Now the apostles and the brothers[a] who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party[b] criticized him, saying, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them." But Peter began and explained it to them in order: "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.' But I said, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' But the voice answered a second time from heaven, 'What God has made clean, do not call common.' 10 This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. 11 And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. 12 And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. 13 And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; 14 he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.' 15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'  17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" 18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life."

How hard do you work for the Lord?  Are you always on a mission?  Are you always working for God's kingdom?  Or are you the opposite?  Are you one who never thinks about God's kingdom increasing and what you can do about it?  Or maybe you're somewhere in the middle.  You live a regular life and have a regular job, but every once in a while you get up the urge to do the work of the church.

I must admit that I've been all three of these.  There have been times where I have been working very hard for the Lord.  There are also times where, usually because of burn out, I've only done the bare minimum.  And there are lots of times where I am just in the middle.

Thank God that in all those times God still does His work.  You read that right.  Whether I am working hard or barely working for the kingdom, God is still doing His work fully and completely.

As Peter says, so I say, "who am I to stand in God's way?"  Sometimes our work is counterproductive.   We can  actually work too hard for the kingdom and become very frustrated when things don't go the way we want.  We can quickly get frustrated and burned out when we see other Christians not working as hard as we are, or when we see the humanity of other Christians as they sin even in the church.  In all of these times we are being counterproductive for ourselves and for our church.  We simply need to do what the Lord asks us to do and then get out of the way.   Sometimes we need to just get out of our own way.

Peter was very reluctant to go to the Gentiles and share the word of the Lord.  He was completely Jewish and his whole life he had been told that he couldn't associate with the other nations.  Actually, when you look at the Old Testament, you can see that God commanded the Israelites to stay away them.  So Peter was only following the rules.  Now, after all this time, God was changing the rules.  Not only would Peter go and proclaim the good news to his enemies, the Gentiles, but he would be able to eat anything and everything that God had, at one time and for millennium, called unclean.

Peter had to get out of his own way, and when He finally did, the Holy Spirit did His work unhindered among the Gentiles.

Jesus has called us to do four things: Love.  Forgive.  Baptize, and Teach.   When we are about these things and living our lives doing these things we will have the satisfaction and contentment that God desires for us.  Let's focus on these things starting today so that we can get out of God's way and out of our own way and simply watch God make the church grow.

Prayer: Lord, bless us as we get out of Your way and let You do Your work through us.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 148   English Standard Version (ESV)
"Praise the Name of the Lord"

148 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his hosts!

Praise him, sun and moon,
    praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,
    and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord!
    For he commanded and they were created.
And he established them forever and ever;
    he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.[a]

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
    stormy wind fulfilling his word!

Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars!
10 Beasts and all livestock,
    creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
    old men and children!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for his people,
    praise for all his saints,
    for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!

For a long time I've like to look up the origin and original definition of words.  I guess it comes from studying Greek at the seminary.  Anyway, there's that word "praise" used over and over again and so I wanted to see where it came from.  I found that it actually comes from an Anglo-French word "preisen"  from which we also get the word "prize".

In Hebrew the word is "Halal" from which we get Hallelujah.  It means to be to be clear, to shine, to boast, show, to rave, celebrate, to be clamorously foolish.

In its context in Psalm 148 we can see how al of these definitions would work.  We want to boast about God, to revere Him, to prize Him, to show Him, and so on.  All of those definitions will work.

Make sure that you PRAISE the Lord today in whatever way you see fit!  Just do it and keep doing it all day and all week long!

Prayer: We praise You, O God!  We acknowledge you to be the Lord.  All the earth will praise Your name forever and ever.  Make us to be constantly praising and blessing You for being the Lord of our lives.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ        Who was Hushai?

Despite what many of you may be thinking, 'Hushai' is NOT on the menu at your local sushi bar. No!. Nor is it the sound your kitkat makes while trying to dislodge a hairball. No, he – and he was a 'he,' despite those dresses he liked to wear (They call them 'robes' even to this day, over there!) – was the original 007. Without the nifty cars and expense accounts.

Anyway, the Bible tells us that he was a friend and counselor of David's (2 Sam. 15: 32, 37) who became a double agent for him, and during Absalom's revolt, he told Absalom to lead his army against David's army. Absalom took his advice over that of Ahithophel – well, wouldn't you? With a name like that, the dude sounds like some nasty-tasting cough syrup. Anyway, this led to Absalom's defeat.
Well, no kidding, cupcake. Considering that Hushai was no doubt sharing his battle plans with David – who, in case you've all forgotten, was one of the top military minds of his age – thanks to God. Just wasn't the best father. --- Pat King
