DEVOTION:  Revelation 1:4-18  English Standard Version (ESV)
 
"Greeting to the Seven Churches"
⁴ John to the seven churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, ⁵ and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood ⁶ and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. ⁷ Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail^[a] on account of him. Even so. Amen.
⁸ "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."
 
"Vision of the Son of Man"
⁹ I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. ¹⁰ I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet ¹¹ saying, "Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea."
¹² Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, ¹³ and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. ¹⁴ The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, ¹⁵ his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. ¹⁶ In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
¹⁷ When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, ¹⁸ and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 
 
One theme is repeated over and over again in this passage.  It is the fact that Jesus is eternal.  Three times he is called eternal.  He is the "one who is and who was and who is to come."  He is called "the Alpha and Omega".  He is called "the one is and who was and who is to come." 
 
But there are also some other things said.  Any time you see the number seven, it is referring to the completeness or totality of something.  So there are seven churches, referring to the total number of Christians throughout the earth, there are seven golden lampstands, referring to the "light of the world", Jesus himself.  There are seven stars referring to the totality of universes. 
 
John is making sure that we understand that God is completely eternal, all powerful, and that he rules over all the heavens and the earth.  When he has this vision he is overwhelmed by the awesome power and authority of Jesus. 
 
Remember that he knew Jesus as a friend, and a confidant, and as a travel companion.  He was able to see Him for just a second on the Mount of Transfiguration, and then he fainted.  Now he was seeing him in all His fullness. 
 
The same will be true for us.  Right now we see Jesus in a veiled way.  We experience Him in bread and wine, water and Word.  We don't behold his glory fully.  There will come a time when we will see Him face to face.  We will see the one who was, and is, and is to come!  We will see the eternal Lord, because HE IS RISEN! 
 
Prayer: Help us to be patient and have peace as we await Your glory.  Help us to remember and believe in Your promises with a sure and certain faith.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Acts 5:12-32  (ESV)
¹² Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. ¹³ None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. ¹⁴ And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, ¹⁵ so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. ¹⁶ The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
     ¹⁷ But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy ¹⁸ they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. ¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, ²⁰ "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life." ²¹ And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
       Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. ²² But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, ²³ "We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside." ²⁴ Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. ²⁵ And someone came and told them, "Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people." ²⁶ Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
       ²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, ²⁸ saying, "We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us." ²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. ³¹ God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. ³² And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
 
 
"We must obey God rather than men."  Oh, how I wish more people would adhere to this statement from Paul. 
 
What about you?  If you are given the choice of obeying God rather than men, which one will you choose?  Which one have you chosen in the past?  
 
I must admit that I haven't always chosen God's will.  Many times I have chosen the will of the world.  Many times I have succumb to the pressures of this unbelieving, God forsaken world.  Many times I have given in ot my own sinful nature instead of God's will. 
 
At the same time, it is my prayer that if I am ever put in a position as Peter and the other Apostles were, I will not deny my faith, but stand up for it, in spite of the consequences.  We must obey God rather than men when It comes to professing Jesus as Lord, and giving witness and testimony to the faith!
 
The world cannot stand against the truth of Jesus and His resurrection!  Jesus has overcome the world!  He has overcome sin, death, the devil, and hell.  Live in that truth!  Stand up for that truth!  Rest in that truth!
 
Prayer:  Lord, thank you for giving me opportunities to stand up for you.  Give me the power to do it when the time arises.  Amen.

Well, I could get all profound and mystical on you, and go with God. Who is actually, Israel's only, true king. But I know that that's not what you're looking for.

So, again with turning this over to my Cody, who will – once again - answer the Bible quiz.

And the answer is.......SAUL!!! The dude who hated the stuffin' out of David, and later put a "hit" out on him. Just because. But he did have a nice son, called Jonathon – who was a precursor of Christ, in that, he was willing to sacrifice himself. Even to the point of giving up his inheritance – the throne of Israel - for another.

"You Will Not Abandon My Soul"   (A Miktam^[a] of David.)

16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
² I say to the Lord, "You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you."

³ As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.^[b]

⁴ The sorrows of those who run after^[c] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.

⁵ The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
⁶ The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

⁷ I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.^[d]
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being^[e] rejoices;

There is no more feeling of dread and terror for a little kid than being lost in a crowded place, or feeling.  It happened to me once at the grocery store.  I was horrified.  When a baby is left with a babysitter for the first time, there are often blood curdling screams that go with it.  We can't know what is going through that baby's mind, but it must be a feeling of abandonment.  And nothing will calm it more than the return of the mom and dad.
 
At times we may feel abandoned by God, especially when our whole life as we know it begins to crumble.  Maybe it is the infidelity of a once faithful spouse.  Maybe it's the child who has let you down or who has gotten into some terrible with the wrong crowd.  Maybe it's a diagnosis of cancer or some other dreaded disease that has sent your life into a tailspin.  The only thing that is gonna make it all better is if Jesus returns and takes all the pain away. 
 
Christ is risen!  He is risen indeed!  Alleluia! 
 
This one fact shows us that God has not abandoned us.  He has a plan for us.  That plan was begun at Easter and will be fulfilled on the day off judgment when, as Job says, "He will stand upon the earth, and after my skin has been destroyed, yet, in my flesh I will see God." 
 
My mom had not abandoned when I got lost in the grocery store.  She wasn't going to leave without me.  She loves me too much.  the same is true for us and our relationship with Almighty God.  Although Jesus ascended into heaven bodily, he sent His Spirit to us and promised that he will never leave us or forsake us.   He isn't going to leave without us.  He isn't going to leave us here on the earth by ourselves!  He is going to take us to paradise with Him!
 
Prayer: Lord, thank you for blessing me with your eternal presence and for never abandoning me.  Help me to rest in your presence today.  Amen.

Finally, a decent question. Simple answer: a nutcase who - basically a religious fanatic – took a wackadoodle vow to be "pure," and "consecrated to Yahweh." Which would be okay, except their idea of how to obtain those things were a bit strange. Anyway, the Jewish bible identifies Samson and Samuel as Nazirites. And we all know how they ended up.

Wikki says:

In the Hebrew Bible, a nazirite or nazarite is one who voluntarily took a vow described in Numbers 6:1–21. "Nazarite" comes from the Hebrew word נזיר nazir meaning "consecrated" or "separated". This vow required the person to:

• Abstain from wine, wine vinegar, grapes, raisins, intoxicating liquors, vinegar made from such substances, and eating or drinking any substance that contains any trace of grapes.
• Refrain from cutting the hair on one's head; but to allow the locks of the head's hair to grow.
• Not to become ritually impure by contact with corpses or graves, even those of family members.

After following these requirements for a designated interval (which would be specified in the individual's vow), the person would immerse in a mikveh and make three offerings: a lamb as a burnt offering (olah), an ewe as a sin-offering (hatat), and a ram as a peace offering (shelamim), in addition to a basket of unleavened bread, grain offerings and drink offerings, which accompanied the peace offering. They would also shave their head in the outer courtyard of the Temple (the Jerusalem Temple) and then place the hair on the same fire as the peace offering. (Numbers 6:18)
The nazirite is described as being "holy unto YHWH" (Numbers 6:8), yet at the same time must bring a sin offering. This has led to divergent approaches to the nazirite in the Talmud, and later authorities, with some viewing the nazirite as an ideal, and others viewing him as a sinner.
In Modern Hebrew the word "nazir" is commonly used for monks, both Christian and Buddhist - this meaning having largely displaced the original Biblical meaning.

DEVOTION: John 20:1-18    (ESV)

20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. ² So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." ³ So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. ⁴ Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. ⁵ And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, ⁷ and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'^[a] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. ⁸ Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; ⁹ for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples went back to their homes.

           ¹¹ But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. ¹² And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. ¹³ They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" Whom are you seeking?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, "Mary." (which means Teacher). ¹⁷ Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" ¹⁸ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"—and that he had said these things to her.
 
Yeah right.....  Have you ever heard such a far-fetched story?  No one rises from the dead.  We have plenty of ghost stories and zombie stories, but that's all they are.... stories.  This one, as far-fetched and unbelievable as it is, is TRUE. 
 
How do we know it's true?  There are two things:
1. The stone was rolled away and his body was gone.  This was in spite of the fact that there were guards there guarding it, and hat it was sealed.  The stone would have taken at least two and probably more people to roll it away, and none of the disciples ever said they did it.  They were too scared.  No one was able to produce a dead, decaying body, because it wasn't decaying or dead.  His body was alive!
2. He appeared to many people over a period of forty days before his ascension, and then appeared to Paul, an enemy of Jesus, afterward.  He appeared to men and women, friends and foes.  He walked, talked, prayed, and ate with them. 
 
The truth is impossible to deny.  Jesus is alive!  Trust it!  Know it!  Believe it!  Live it!
 
Prayer: Lord, you have shown us, beyond a doubt, that you are alive!  Show your power to us again this Holy Week as you convince us of Your love, forgiveness, and peace over and over again until the day you return to judge the living and the dead and restore your kingdom to what it should be.  Amen.

Anyway – to answer  your question – she was the great grandmother of King David, and the many-times great grandmother of Jesus. She married that Boaz dude, who became the father of Obed, who was the father of Jesse (he's mentioned in an advent song, BTW), who was the father of David- of the slingshot and king fame.

So seriously, if Cody can answer this without referring to anything – other than his doggie memory – you have got to try something harder next time.
