DEVOTION: Deuteronomy 32:36-39 (ESV)

36 For the Lord will vindicate[a] his people
    and have compassion on his servants,
when he sees that their power is gone
    and there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 Then he will say, 'Where are their gods,
    the rock in which they took refuge,
38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices
    and drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise up and help you;
    let them be your protection!

39 "'See now that I, even I, am he,
    and there is no god beside me;
I kill and I make alive;
    I wound and I heal;
    and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

I love it w hen God gives us a little sarcasm.  In our reading for today he is mocking the other "gods" that the people have followed.  "Let them rise up and help you, let them be your protection."

My friends, your money isn't going to protect you.  Your house isn't going to help you.  Your waist line, no matter how big or small it is, isn't going to get you even one step closer to heaven.  That time you spent working, or partying, or doing whatever other than being in worship isn't going to come back to give you peace when you're in trouble.  That presidential candidate isn't going to make everything better.

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men who cannot save!  Put your trust in the Lord!  There is none that can take you out of His hand!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understandings.  In all your ways acknowledge HIM and HE will keep your paths straight!

Prayer:  Lord, help us to trust solely in you where true peace and joy can be found.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ        What part of the Promised Land did the tribe of Benjamin get?

(A funny answer from Pat King: the right answer is tucked in to it too!)

I know this one without even looking it up. Many believe it was a renovated gas station in Vermont – Burlington, Vermont, to be exact! But in actuality - A new word I'm throwing out there just for you! You can add it to your "new word for the day" list. – it was in the south central part of Palestine. (Or, the portion between Judah on the south and Ephraim on the north, with the Jordan River as their eastern border. Which doesn't exactly tell us anything, other than they were out in the middle of nowhere, with camel dung as territory markers.)
But, back to my story. Ben and his brother, Judah, took a $5 Penn State ice cream-making correspondence course, and with $12,000 (their brothers all invested $1000 as silent partners), opened their first ice cream shop in the afore-mentioned gas station. They left the old Shell sign up, in order to lure customers - who were in actuality, (there's that word-of-the-day, again!) looking for gas -  in. Anyway, Judah decided to change his name to "Jerry" when all the customers started calling him "Judy." And asking him if he was a girly-girl man. For some strange reason, he took offense at that. But that is how Ben and Judah, became the Ben and Jerry we all love to this very day. No lie!

DEVOTIONPsalm 118:19-29 (ESV)

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
    that I may enter through them
    and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
    the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me
    and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.[a]
23 This is the Lord's doing;
    it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
    O Lord, we pray, give us success!

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
    We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
    and he has made his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
    up to the horns of the altar!

28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
    you are my God; I will extol you.
29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

If there is such a Psalm as a quotable Psalm, this is it.  How many of the phrases in this psalm have you heard before?   The last verse is the verse my family would pray every night at the end of our evening meal.  I don't know how many times I've quoted verse 24.

The verse I want to focus on this morning is verse 25, because it is the verse that is repeated over and over again by the people as Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  What a joyous occasion it was!  Jesus entered as one who was to be the Savior of the world and he left the city doing just that.

In between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday there were some pretty rough days.  He got very angry at the money changers in the sanctuary of the temple on Tuesday, arrested on Thursday, and beaten and nailed to a cross on Friday.  Yet, he came "in the name of the Lord", and he definitely did what the Lord had sent him to do.

As you move closer and closer to Holy Week and all that it entails, realize that every day is the day that the Lord has made, and every day we can "give thanks to the Lord for he is good and his steadfast love endures forever.  But know for certain that the man who rode on a colt into Jerusalem is the same man who rose from the dead the next Sunday, and he is the same man who lives and reigns over heaven and earth today!  He loves you!  He died on the cross for you.  He guides and directs your life today! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, bless us as we move toward Jerusalem this week.  Help us to remember that you are the same man who died on a cross, rose from the dead and lives and reigns forever and ever, so that we may have true peace.  Amen.

PUBLISHED BY THE MISSOURI DISTRICT OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH—MISSOURI SYNOD March 10, 2016

What's the Need? Pastors and commissioned ministers struggle with personal and/or professional challenges from time to time. Being in ministry often means bearing others' burdens, and sometimes facing daily challenges feeling isolated and alone. When President Hagan came to office he had a desire that our Missouri District would develop a team of caring individuals who would be in place to support professional church workers and their families. The five-person "Church Worker Care Team" is now in place and they are here to listen and care, allowing for individuals to share the burdens that are heavy on the heart. Other Missouri District colleagues will be identified and recruited for the Church Worker Care Team as the need presents itself. Read more . . .

Love Multiplied
Taken from the March 2016 Rural & Small Town Mission Newsletter
By the Rev. Jacob T. Mueller, Pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Emma, MO

December 1, 2014, was a typical Monday. That first Monday in Advent was a calm day in Emma — until sirens broke the calm. A house caught fire midmorning, shortly after the family had left for work and school. The building was saved, but everything inside was a total loss. That evening, our congregation's LWML group held its annual Christmas party. We were quickly able to figure out who lived in the house which had burned. The home was occupied by Analise, a single mother with four small children. It turns out that just six weeks earlier we had visited them while doing door-to-door surveys with Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ. We had a connection; how could we help? Read more . . .

Wyneken's Not der deutschen Lutheraner in Nordamerika [Distress of the German Lutherans in North America] (1841, often called his Notruf); and the beginning of the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of North America (1866).

Click here for a Walther Round Table schedule showing topics and times. The program will be in the Conference Room at Concordia Historical Institute (CHI).

Please contact CHI no later than Monday, April 11. Like last year, there will be a free will offering at the meal. We hope that you can attend and be enriched by this year's program. DEVOTION:  Luke 20:9-20  (ESV)
"The Parable of the Wicked Tenants"

And he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant[a] to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.' 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.' 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "Surely not!" 17 But he looked directly at them and said, "What then is this that is written:

"'The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone'?[b]

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him."

19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

This parable is about God's relationship with the people he created.

1. He gave us this world to us to live in and to reap the benefits of it.

2. He sent prophet after prophet (Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, etc.) that the people rejected and treated badly.  People continue to reject the Word today.

3. Then he sent his Son, and they rejected him.  They beat him and they killed him thinking they could somehow keep the property for themselves.  They didn't understand that the Lord had sent His Son to rescue them.  People still reject Him and act hostile toward Him.

Even though the world is not ours, we often think it is.  Even though our possessions and even our own abilities and talents are gifts from God, we somehow think that they are ours, and so we treat them as such.  When we fail to realize that all we have is a gift of God, and then he comes expecting to get just some of the fruit of the vineyard, and we don't give him what is owed to him, namely the honor, respect, love and the fruits of faith that he has cultivated, what do you think his reaction should be?

Thankfully, if you believe and have received the owner of the vineyard, namely the Lord Himself, you need not worry about being destroyed.  This parable is a warning to those who reject God's message and His messengers.  It is a warning to those who think that the vineyard, namely their very lives, are their own and not the Lord's. It is a warning to those who don't realize and understand that the Lord is God, and He alone will judge.

It is also a reminder of God's grace to us even while we are here on this earth.  He has planted this world, with all of it's blessings and put us in this vineyard we call earth, not to abuse it, and certainly not to dishonor our creator with it, but to keep it and harvest it for the day when the Lord returns!

Live in this world knowing that it is only temporary, that it is not your own, and that one day the master will return and all we have to do is receive him and share his fruit with Him forever!

Prayer: Lord, you have blessed us with so many blessings, too abundant for us to recount it all.  Make us grateful tenants of your creation, and help us to share the fruits of your labor with you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ      Where was Moses supposed to go to see the Promised Land and to die?

Deuteronomy 32:48-52  (ESV)
48 That very day the Lord spoke to Moses, 49 "Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel for a possession. 50 And die on the mountain which you go up, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel. 52 For you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel."

Thanks Don Nolte!
