"A Glorious Promise"
By Rev. Wayne Palmer
February 26, 2016

Lenten Devotion 2016

(Jesus said) "You are those who have stayed with Me in My trials, and I assign to you, as My Father assigned to Me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Luke 22:28-30).

Read Luke 22:28-30.

Though Jesus was generally well-received by the crowds throughout His ministry, He faced ever stiffening opposition and hostility from the Jewish religious leaders. But the disciples faithfully stood by Him through it all. Peter said it well: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that You are the Holy One of God" (John 6:68b-69).

Jesus looks around the table at them. A moment ago they disputed which of them was greatest, but He knows in the future they will suffer as He will-beatings, imprisonment, exile, even death. So Jesus points them beyond those sufferings to the glorious reward that waits for them at the end. When their earthly lives are completed, they will receive a greater honor, privilege and glory than anything they could have sought on earth. Here they will serve in humility and suffering, but in heaven they will find true glory and honor. The promise is true for you and me as well.

Though our daily work for the Lord often seems to go unappreciated and unrecognized, Jesus assures us that God marks it well and will faithfully reward it in eternity.

THE PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank You for teaching us a new way to think about ourselves and our place in Your world. Help me grasp the beauty and grandeur of it all, that I may live as You did, in humble service and self-sacrifice. Amen.

DEVOTION: Luke 13:1-9

13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."

And he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, 'Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?' And he answered him, 'Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'"

I remember back when hurricane Katrina destroyed a big part of New Orleans.  I heard so many people say that it was God's judgment against that city.  To those who said that, or who think that way about things any time a natural disaster or freak accident happens, I say, READ JESUS' WORDS IN THE PASSAGE ABOVE!

How much time do you think you have left on the earth?  A day?  A week?  50 years?  The truth is that you don't know.  You are just as big a sinner as everyone else, and so you will, one day, take your last breath!  A very stern warning from Jesus, indeed!

The groups of people that Jesus mentions didn't die because they were worse sinners than everyone else, or because that was a specific judgment against a specific sin.  It was because they were just as big of sinners as you are!  What does that say about you?

The God who knows the day of your death, gives you and I a warning.  He calls us to repentance.  He could just leave us alone.  He could just say that it's up to us and our own wits to get ourselves into a right relationship with Jesus and into heaven.  He doesn't.  Instead he warns us that we need to repent or we will likewise perish.

Indeed, we will perish.  We will leave this earth.  Our souls will leave our bodies at the moment of our last breath.  That's not the perishing that Jesus is talking about here.  he is talking about perishing eternally.  He is talking about how everyone is equally sinful and is equally in need of forgiveness.  Repentance is the beginning of that forgiveness. Repentance is the realization that I am sinful, that I can't get things right on my own, and that I need a Savior from my sin, which is Jesus.  Repentance is a literal turning around and going the other way.

He doesn't leave us hanging though.  he doesn't make us do it all on our own.  He also gives us the tools and the power to repent and receive forgiveness!  It's called His WORD and His SACRAMENTS!!!  The trouble is that if you're not in church, you're much less likely to receive them!  Get your butt to church so that you can receive and use the tools and the power that you need to repent and believe the good news!

Prayer:  Lord, make me repent from my particular sins and run to your arms for forgiveness and a renewed heart and life.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ  What were the Israelites to do with their land every seven years?

Excellent answer from Don Nolte:  Quiz;  Leviticus 25 starting at verse 4   Every seventh year was a sabbatical year when the Israelite farmer did not plant any crops on their lands or harvest any volunteer crops.  It provided rest for the soil and emphasized the people's dependence upon God, since they depleted their reserves of food during the sabbatical year

LENT DINNERS ARE EVERY WEDNESDAY DURING LENT AT 5:30!!
Over the last many, many years your Jr. and Sr. high youth and their parents (mostly their parents) have been serving dinner on Wednesday nights during Lent.  While this is a good way for the youth and their parents to serve and give back to the congregation, it is also supposed to be a way for them to raise money for their service projects and trips.

Unfortunately over the past several years, they have barely broken even on these dinners.  The parents usually donate the desserts and even much of the other food out of their own pockets.  Without that the youth would probably lose money.

It is especially important that they make money this year, as they will need all they can get to make their goal for the National Youth Gathering in new Orleans.

I want to encourage you all to attend these dinners, and, while there is no set price per person for these dinners, a generous free will offering is strongly encouraged!!

Below is the Menu for each week:

March 2-
taco bar w/all the fixings
desserts

March 9-
pasta
salad
rolls
desserts

March 16-
Fried Chicken
potatoes
corn
rolls
desserts

As always, thank you for your continued support of the future of Christianity!!!

DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 10:1-13  English Standard Version (ESV)

10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Have you ever someone say that, "God won't give you anything you can't handle"?   NOT TRUE!!  When you hear that, don't believe it!  It isn't in the Bible!!

What is in the Bible is the last verse for the Epistle reading for today.  God allows temptation to come upon you in order to test you, not to see if you'll fall into it, but to strengthen you in His power and grace.  For, when he allows you to be overcome with temptation, he also provides the way out, JESUS, so that you may be able to endure it.

The verse before it is very important to remember too.  "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall."  Don't get too confident or to cocky that you think you can handle temptation on your own.  You aren't!  You won't!  The only way you are able to overcome  temptation is through the Holy Spirit living in you!  And when you do fall into temptation, the only way out of it is JESUS!

Listen to me!  You can't handle everything on your own.  Every day you will encounter things you can't handle!  That's why you have the Holy Spirit in you!  That's why you have Jesus to die on a cross for you!

Live in that grace and power today and know that the Lord is there to see you through it all!

Prayer: Lord, help us to stand firm in you lest we fall into temptation and thank you for pulling us back out of that temptation pit when we do fall into it.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Ezekiel 33:7-20
"So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.
10 "And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: 'Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?' 11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
12 "And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[a] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, though I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' yet if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.
17 "Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not just,' when it is their own way that is not just. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways."

A lot of people think that when something bad happens to someone, or when someone suffers the consequences of their sin in a very bad way, God just sits back and laughs maniacally, as if he gets some sort of pleasure or joy from seeing people suffer.  They think that God was the one who made the bad thing happen or that he somehow wanted it.

What does it say in this passage?  "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?"

When something bad happens to you, you can't blame God or think badly of him.   He is not the cause of it.  He may have allowed it to happen, but he didn't cause it.  It's like when your mom or dad has told you time and time again to get your homework done, and for a while they may even hawk over you to make sure you do it, but eventually they will have to let you fail so that you learn your lesson and stop sinning in such a way.  The Lord, lets the consequences happen little by little, so that the biggest consequence of all doesn't happen.  he allows us to suffer so that our faith grows stronger and we don't lose faith.

All he wants is for us to turn from our wickedness so that we may live with Him forever.  he is not our cosmic killjoy.  he is not our fun sucker, as if every little evil thing we want to do is much more fun than the joy that He has set before us to serve him and do His will.  He only wants the best for us, and he knows that his will is the best and will lead to the best.

God is just, not only because he is the one who has made the rules and enforces them, because he ahs the right to, but also because it is all good and right and perfect.  I urge you to realize this today and submit everything, all of your ways to the Lord!  He will lift you up!

Prayer: Lord, make us submit to Your will so that we may live and not die.  Amen.

Feb 24-
Turkey
Stuffing
green beans
apple sauce
desserts

March 2-
taco bar w/all the fixings
desserts

March 9-
pasta
salad
rolls
desserts

March 16-
Fried Chicken
potatoes
corn

As always, thank you for your continued support of the future of Christianity!!!

DEVOTION:  Psalm 85   English Standard Version (ESV)

85 Lord, you were favorable to your land;
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
you covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
you turned from your hot anger.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation toward us!
Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him
and make his footsteps a way.

After we have hurt someone and been found guilty of it, and after we ourselves feel the guilt and shame of what we have done, confessed it, and turned from it, all we really want to hear is the words "I forgive you."  We don't want to hear more condemnation.  We don't want everyone to pile on with their words of correction or advice.  We don't want to fight about it anymore.  We have already said and expressed with actions that we are contrite and truly sorry for our sin.  All we want to hear and experience is words of forgiveness and healing.

Our world is full of people who have been beaten down by their failures and mistakes. You may be one of them.  If a person already knows their guilt and has repented of it, there is no need to keep beating them down.  The only reason we would do it is for our own satisfaction, as if we are the ones who are dolling out the punishment upon the person.  We want the person to hurt and so we think that we are the ones who are allowed and even have the responsibility to make them hurt.

Our Lord tells us in several different places throughout Scripture that He alone is the one to take vengeance and that he will repay according to our deeds.  Everywhere in Scripture, but especially throughout the New Testament, we are called to forgive and reconcile!  No where in Scripture are we called to hold a grudge, to make the other person hurt like we do, or to heap sin upon sin and guilt upon guilt.  If anything, there is swift, certain, and complete punishment and when the punishment and restitution is over the sin is forgotten.

So it is with us!  Jesus has paid the price!  He has reconciled us to God.  He has taken the guilt upon Himself.  Let's live like it!  Let forgiveness and reconciliation reign fully and completely!!!

Prayer: Lord, when I sin help me to freely confess it, turn from it, and live in your grace mercy and peace.  When someone sins against me, help me to deal with it according to your will with mercy, grace, forgiveness, peace and reconciliation.  Amen.
