DEVOTION:   Hebrews 10:5-10 (ESV)

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,

"Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
    but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'"

When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), then he added, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

In the Old Testament sacrifices and burnt offerings were given to pay for sin.  Different ones were prescribed for different sins, sometimes a bull, sometimes a ram, other times a grain offering.  God had intended these offerings and sacrifices more as a way to show the people how costly it was when you sinned.  It was a way to, in essence, show them that there was no way they could pay for their sins themselves.

What ended up happening is that the people misunderstood that.  They thought they were truly making satisfaction for all of their wrongdoing.  They thought that these sacrifices fulfilled their "obligation" to the Lord, when all along there was no obligation.

What God wanted was their hearts.  he wanted them to do His will, not under obligation, but out of love and honor for the Lord.

That's where Jesus comes in.  Not only did he make total satisfaction for all sins for all time, but he did God's will completely out of love and honor for the Father and for His children, for us.  Jesus became prophet, priest, and king for us.  He has fulfilled the obligation of blood for sin, a perfect will toward God, and the love that we are unable to give.

Since the Holy Spirit lives in us and regenerates us, we are able to live holy lives now, not under obligation, but out of love and honor for Christ.  We can worship with true hearts.  We can do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. We can pray!  We can work!  We can be at peace with God and one another.  All this we can do because off what Christ has done for us!!

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for sending your Son to be prophet, priest, and King for us.  Christ, thank you for fulfilling God's will for us!  Holy Spirit, thank you for regeneration us and for keeping us int he faith until the Day of Jesus.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:     Where is the Bible verse that he will be called "Immanuel, which means 'God with us.'

Portals of Prayer devotion for Monday related to your quiz question about the first use of the term "Immanuel" in the Bible.
I don't know if it was the "first" time the term is used, but the P.o.P. devotion mentioned Isaiah 7:14 using the term Immanuel (by itself), then Matthew 1:23 quotes the prophet's use of Immanuel with the added "God with us" in parentheses.

Way to go Alan Hofeldt!!!

DEVOTION: Micah 5:2-5 (ESV)

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
    from ancient days.
Therefore he shall give them up until the time
    when she who is in labor has given birth;
then the rest of his brothers shall return
    to the people of Israel.
And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth.
And he shall be their peace.

I have often said that there is more good news, what we call Gospel, in the Old Testament than there is in the New Testament.  Here is a perfect example.  In this passage from Micah we see the true and certain proclamation that a ruler will come forth from Bethlehem and that He shall be their peace.

At first glance this sounds like Micah is talking about David.  David came from Bethlehem.  He was a ruler of Judah.  He was a shepherd boy.

The trouble with that is that David had come and gone centuries ago.  Who could this be?

We know!  It's our Savior, Christ the Lord!  And this will be the sign for you.  You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

GOOD NEWS!!  Alleluia!  Praise the Lord!  Christ our Savior was born, has lived, suffered, died, and rose again!  Woohoo!  Rejoice!

Let us pray:  Lord, thank you for the good news and the reality that you have sent our Savior and He has saved us.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:    Which Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John) was most probably the first to be written?  Thank you Pat!!

Okay, I went to several sites to get this answer – because I never trust just one group's opinion - but the above link summarizes what all of them said, the best. And you ought to read it, since it is interesting.
Anyway, most of the early church leaders thought it was Mathew – which, I'm guessing, is why his gospel account is first in the New Testament. But now, they actually think it was Mark. And if you dudes and dudettes check out the link I've included, you'll find out why.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 80:1-7 (ESV)

80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,
stir up your might
    and come to save us!

Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!

O Lord God of hosts,
how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?
You have fed them with the bread of tears
and given them tears to drink in full measure.
You make us an object of contention for our neighbors,
and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!

As Karin has been home lately she's been watching a lot of HGTV.  On that channel there are several shows like "Flip or Flop" and "Fixer Upper"  and other home renovation shows that take old houses and make them new.  They take the old junk out and replace it with all new or at least "repurposed" stuff.  They RESTORE what was useless and many times unlivable and turn it into something beautiful.

That's the same thing King David is calling on God to do for us today.  He is calling on God to RESTORE us and make us new, to take away all the old sinful stuff in our lives and create a new heart and a right spirit within us.  He asks God to let his face shine upon us that we may be saved.

How does this restoration happen?  Well, first there is the demolition.  When we confess our sins to God and turn from them to Him, it is as if he takes a sledge hammer to our sin and pulverizes it.  He totally annihilates all that nasty, old, shameful sin in us and clears it out leaving it in the dumpster of hell.

Next he takes his own love, his mercy, and his grace and begins to repair the holes in the wall and all the stains and blemishes that sin has left behind.  He white washes the walls and primes them with his forgiveness.

Thirdly, in the place of all that old cabinetry and furniture, he places new fixtures of joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self control.  He takes what was a heart of stone and replaces it with a pure heart that is full of him.

Lastly, he dwells in that heart with His power and might so that he can keep it clean and pure.  He keeps it clean as His own Word goes into the hears and straight to the heart, and as His own body and blood go into the mouth for the forgiveness of sins.  And as he dwells in it there is peace in his newly renovated house and it is a peace that passes all understanding but never goes away.

How wonderful is that?  Who knew that when we surrender our dirty, cold, and useless heart to God he is able to do such wonderfully miraculous things?

Remember this all during this Advent and Christmas Season.  If you heart, your soul, needs some major renovations get them done today at no cost to you.  The price has already been paid by Christ on the cross!  The whole bill is paid in full!  Alleluia!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer:  Thank you for restoring us, O Lord, and for creating a new and right spirit within me.  Amen.

DEVOTIONLuke 7:18-35

18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?" 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."

24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,

"'Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.'

28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29 (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, 30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31 "To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

"'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.'

33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children."

Some people aren't going to be satisfied no matter what.  They didn't like John because he didn't live like they did.  He was too weird.  They didn't like Jesus because He was TOO MUCH like they were.  He ate regular food and even drank wine.

Those who don't want to submit to the will of God, and those who will pick and choose what Scripture they want to believe and don't want to believe will never be satisfied with God's Word.  They will never be satisfied to say "If God says it, I say it." or "If it's God's will, I will abide by it."

It is hard for all off us, because our will human will is naturally opposed to God's will by virtue of being born of two human parents and living after the Fall of Adam and Eve.  Yet, by the power of the Holy Spirit working through His Word and Sacraments, we have been regenerated.  We have been born again.  And so, as we are being continually brought closer to God's will as He sanctifies up more and more as we see the Day of the Lord approaching.

I know He is forming me more and more, day by day, as I have gone through discipline and times of struggle to strip and chip away at all that hard sin I have in my life.  I know he's doing the same for you.  Look for it!  Realize it!  Rejoice in it!  Accept it!  When you do, it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.  You will see God's will in a whole new light.  Don't be like the Pharisees and Sadducees who weren't satisfied with the Jesus they saw, talked with, and experienced.  Be satisfied to know Him for who He is, your God and Lord.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to surrender to your will and to be satisfied with who You truly are and not our own supposition of who we think You should be.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:  Find a verse in Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, or Malachi that is a prophecy about Jesus.

(Leave it to Pat King to be extremely thorough.)

Zephaniah

These verses refer to Christ's return and Judgement Day:
"For the day of the LORD is at hand. … And it shall come to pass at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and punish the men who are settled in complacency, who say in their heart, 'The LORD will not do good, nor will He do evil'" (1:7, 12).
"The great day of the LORD is near. … That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. … I will bring distress upon men, and they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD" (1:14-17).

2. Haggai

Haggai 2:6-7 – refers to Christ's return
6 "This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the Lord Almighty.

3. Zechariah
There are a lot of prophecies regarding Jesus in this book, but I decided to go with one -Zechariah 12:10 - about the crucifixion.

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."

4. Malachi

"But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings," Malachi 4:2

According to Jewish sages and tradition, this Sun of Righteousness referred to in Malachi's prophecy was understood to be the Messiah, who would have the power to heal who ever touched the tzit-tzit (fringes) on his garment. (see Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34, and Mark 6:56)

So, if you're wondering what the tzit-tzit is, I looked it up for you. I am so good to you!.

"In Jesus' day, Jewish men wore a simple tunic both at home and at work. When appearing in public, they would cover their tunic with a large rectangular cloth which draped over the shoulder and fell to the ankles. This cloth was called a tallit and served as protection from cold and rain. Hanging from the end of each of its four corners (wings) was a tzitzit in obedience to the biblical command. The hem of this garment is actually made with fringes, or tassels (called tzitziyot, in Hebrew). These were required to be on the four corners of all clothing of Jewish men, in accordance with God's instruction. These tassels were to remind each Jewish man of his responsibility to fulfill God's commandments in Deuteronomy 22 :12 and Num.15:37-40. In fact, these tassels are tied into 613 knots to constantly remind Jewish men of the 613 laws of Moses, of which there are 365 prohibitions (The "thou shalt not" laws), and 248 affirmations (the "thou shall" laws). The knots also correspond with the ineffable name of God, the unspoken yod-hey-vav-hey, Yahweh."

Tomorrow I won't be home, so it'll be up to someone else to answer this.
