DEVOTION: Mark 12:38-44 (ESV)

38 And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

        41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.[a] 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

As Jesus often teaches, so he continues to teach that there is no difference between rich and poor in the kingdom of God.  That's a whole lot different than how we view it in the world, isn't it?  We have lists upon lists of people who are the richest in the world and in the United States.  This is no good.  When we do this we are exalting those who have a lot of money as being the smartest and most able to lead.  Just look at those who are able to run for president.  Money is the number one reason that people have to get out of the race.

Do we have a list of who gave the most percentage of their income to charity or to the church?  Do we honor those who give hours upon hours of their time to worthy causes?  Do we honor the poor widow who gives everything she has to her church or to her Ladies Aid organization?  If any human beings should be honored it should be these.

Yet, most of the time they don't want honor.  They want the honor, glory, and praise to go to God, or at the very least, to the organization that does God's work.  This indeed is good!

The same is true of most popular TV preachers and evangelists.  Most of them are just out to get your money.  They'll tell you what your itching ears want to hear.  Some are good, but most are scammers.   They are exactly the ones that Jesus speaks about when he says, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers."  Stay away from these people.

In fact, stay away from anyone who makes a big deal about the money they have or expects extra honor because of the money they have.  Their god is their money, and God is not honored.

The widow got it!  She trusted in the Lord to care for her.  She knew that her happiness, her peace, her security, and her satisfaction came from the Lord and so everything she had belonged to him and she was ok with giving it all to him, because she knew she would be cared for.

My prayer for you is that you get it too.  That you realize that real security and satisfaction come from God alone.  Trust in Him!  Give all that you have to Him so that He can use it and you to do His work!

Let us pray: Lord, help me to be like the widow and give it all up to you, Amen.

DEVOTION: Hebrews 9:24-28 (ESV)

24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

CHRIST IS THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST!  HE IS THE ONE WHO SACRIFICED HIMSELF ONCE FOR ALL SIN SO THAT WE WOULD NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING BUT TRUST IN HIM AND BELIEVE IN HIS SUFFERING, DEATH, AND RESURRECTION FOR US!

There are many who would say that you "have to" confess your sins in order for Jesus to forgive you.  Confession, although a very good thing to do, is not a prerequisite of forgiveness.  If that were so, then our salvation would depend on our good work of confession.  Our salvation does not depend on us at all!  Our salvation depends on Christ alone!

Just as Christ doesn't die for us over and over again, nor is it necessary for him to die over and over again every time we sin, so neither is it necessary for us to confess every sin over and over again.  Luther tried that and it caused him noting but depression and exhaustion, because he was never at confession enough.

Instead we only need to trust in Jesus who "appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself."

As I get older and as I spend day after day as a pastor, I realize more and more how much God is in control of my ministry and how little I am in control.  HE IS THE HIGH PRIEST!!!  I realize more and more how I need to go with the flow, not force things, not invent new programs, but simply let God provide the ministry opportunities that arise with each day and let God do His will in me.

That is why St. John's Lutheran Church is growing like it is.  It is growing because the Holy Spirit is doing his work more and more freely in me, in us.  That's why we have had six baptisms in six weeks, and more making appointments and plans to do so.  That is why I have three different adult instructions going on with couples right now.  That is why you are being prompted and urged by the Holy Spirit to invite your friends and family to church!  That is why you feel more and more compelled to be in worship on a regular basis!

Be proud of your church, not because your pastor is cool, or because there is so much fun stuff going on, but because we preach, teach, and believe in the truth that Jesus Christ died once for all sins!  Your salvation is true and real and it all depends on Christ!  Christ is risen!  he is risen indeed!  Alleluia!

Prayer: Lord, help us to continually let go of control as you take over more and more.  Amen.

DEVOTION: 1 Kings 17:8-16

Then the word of the Lord came to him, "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you." 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink." 11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." 12 And she said, "As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die." 13 And Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.'" 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

I think it is fascinating that everyone did just as the Lord told them to do in this story.  Elijah went to Zarephath, a foreign country. The widow gave a stranger some bread just because he told her that God had said something to him.  And guess what, it all worked out just like the Lord promised.  She and Elijah and her whole household ate until the Lord sent rain on the earth.

What happens when you do what the Lord says?  Maybe you haven't been doing what the Lord says, what would happen if you do?  I can guarantee that he will work it all out for your good.  He will do His will, which is always good.  It may not be the most comfortable thing.   It may require you to go outside of your comfort zone.  It may require faith, but that's ok, the Holy Spirit will give you the faith you need.

The biggest thing is that when you disobey God, you don't stay in your sin.  Instead, do what he has commanded; confess your sins and receive his forgiveness.

I also find it interesting that he didn't fill the whole house with food.  he didn't give them all sorts of sheep and cattle.  He sustained them with flour, water, and oil.   Nor did he make rain fall on the earth right away.  He gave them exactly what they needed.  They needed a time off hardship to turn back to him.  They needed bread to survive.  The utmost thing they needed was faith in him, and that is what he gave them the most.  He gave an increase of faith.

The hardship you are going through right now, the struggle, the pain may just be the tool that God uses to increase your faith.  He may be giving you just enough or an abundance right now.  Whatever the case may be, know that he is caring for you in his own way and time.  He loves you with an everlasting love, and he won't let you fall.  Trust in Him to do his good, pleasing, and perfect will in your life.

Prayer: Lord, bless us to let go of our false control over things and give control to you.  Amen.

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR OCTOBER IS CANNED VEGETABLES!! !
Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids.

Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.
Throughout the month of October we will be collecting canned veggies. All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools November 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.

GENERAL PRAYERS:
For the family of David Wettstaed, Joanne Hachtel's brother, who passed away Sunday. He was given 6 months to live, but
God took him early, which was best for him, as he was in a lot of pain, but hard for the family to lose him so soon. He was 74.

For KARSON OWENBY, great grandson of Cal and Betty Tameler, who is dealing with an unknown illness that had him hospitalized for a couple days.  He is doing better slowly.

For DIANNE HANCE who moved to Kindred Rehab at Mercy Hospital in Creve Couer.

For CAL TAMELER as he continues to heal after a cornea transplant.

For DON PANHORST who is undergoing his second round of chemo treatments today.

For DENISE SCHLESSELMANN as she is in the Czech Republic to continue her mission work.

For DAVE AND CAROL KOHRS, who are BOTH on hospice care.

For WILMA WEIGLE as she continues to deal with the after effects of a severe stroke almost two years ago.

One item in agenda for voting tomorrow

Sent via the Samsung GALAXY S®4 Active™, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

As far as I know, the only thing on the election is Warrenton residents voting on an annexation of I70 right of way to the Truxton exit.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 146

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,
    in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed,
    who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;
    the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the sojourners;
    he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
    but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever,
    your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the Lord!

Election and voting day is tomorrow.  I'm not sure what there is to vote on.  If anyone knows let me know and I will make sure to get the information out to everyone.

At the same time much of the nation's attention is focused on the presidential election that is still a year away.  Everyone seems to be looking for the man or the woman that is going to save our nation.  I've got news for you, and it may not be news, you may have already figured it out already, that person does not exist.  No one can save this nation except for God, and he is only going to do it if it is his will.  He may in stead, as he did with the Israelites, allow us to go through a time of trial and even captivity to turn us back to him.

If we don't want that to happen then first of all we need to PRAY to God that he will use different means to turn his people back to him.  PRAY!  PRAY!  PRAY!

Secondly we need to do our part, as Christ has called us to do, and make disciples of all nations baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything he has commanded us.  We can't just sit back and complain about the direction our nation is going, but we need to allow the Holy Spirit to do His work in us and bring it to completion on the day off our Lord Jesus!

Our actions need to be ones of the commands off Jesus which are very clear!

1.  He commands us to love our neighbor as He loves us,

2. He commands us to go and make disciples by baptizing and teaching.  And everyone knows that we teach as much by our actions as we do by our words, and that our children can teach us as much about faith and life as we can teach them at times.

3.  He commands us to forgive as we have been forgiven!  "H breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive anyone of their sins they are forgiven them."

If we, as a church and as individual Christians, do these our church will  grow and we will make a difference in our community and our world!

Do not put your trust in princes (politicians) in mortal men who cannot save.  Put your trust in the Lord who created you, loves you, and gives you salvation!  Ask him to change your community and to bring the world back to him and then trust him to do it.

Prayer: Lord, bless our nation and our community!  Turn those back to you who need turning.  Help us to make a difference through the power of your Spirit!  Make us keep your commands to love, make disciples, and forgive.  Amen.
