"Smart Devils"
January 15, 2015

Daily Devotions Sunset 6-25-13The demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ. Luke 4:41

It has always amazed me that the forces of darkness often understand the purpose and mission of the Lord better than do Christians.

As evidence, I present the passage above, which shows the exorcised demons identifying Jesus and His work. But that passage is hardly unique.

After Jesus' crucifixion the high priests went to Pilate and asked for a guard to be placed upon the Savior's grave. Why? Because they knew Jesus had said, "After three days I will rise" (see Matthew 27:63). Those high priests remembered Jesus' words and made their request when the disciples were still in hiding, and the women were still gathering spices to anoint Jesus' dead body.

It's not entirely different today.

This past December 13th, Pastor Nayak and 14 members of his Baptist congregation had their vehicle surrounded by some 30 Hindus in India. The Hindus smashed the windows of the vehicle and yanked the Christians into the street where they beat them with sticks and clubs. Indeed, the believers were beaten so badly they ended up being hospitalized.

And if you're wondering what Christians might be doing which could provoke such violence, I can tell you: Pastor Nayak and his congregation were singing Christmas carols. Yes, that's right, they were caroling, and the Hindus said those carols were the kind of thing that might convert someone to Christianity.

Maybe you are like me and have never thought hymn singing could touch the soul of a lost person. If so, I think we may well have been wrong.

Consider the impact of the words from this Christmas hymn:

"Once He came in blessing, all our ills redressing;
Came in likeness lowly, Son of God most holy;
Bore the cross to save us, hope and freedom gave us.
Still He comes within us; still His voice would win us
From the sins that hurt us; would to Truth convert us
From our foolish errors, ere He comes in terrors."

Those words, which speak of the forgiveness and salvation that Jesus came to win, are profound, even eternity-changing, to someone who has lived his entire life in darkness.

So, learning from the hatred of those Hindus, let me say I'm going to make a witness with my hymns by singing them just a little more boldly and with a lot more feeling.

Won't you join me in doing so this Sunday?

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I never undervalue the precious salvation Jesus has won for me. Further, may my thankful witness reflect the joy You have given. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  Then the Lord said to Jacob, "Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.  Genesis 31:3

It helps to understand the background of this passage today.  Jacob fled to his Uncle Laban after he saw the wrath off his brother Esau.  He had tricked his father Isaac into giving him the blessing (inheritance) and Esau was none too happy about it.  He has vowed to kill Jacob.  When Jacob heard of it and knew that Esau meant business he quickly ran away.  He spent 20 years working for his Uncle Laban to be able to marry both his daughters (Note: It wasn't God's will that he marry both of them.  It was never God's will that a man have more than one wife.  Every time a man did in the Bible there were dire consequences that went with it.)

Anyway, now God wants him to head back home.  Can you imagine Jacob's anxiety?  Was Esau still ready to kill him?  Was the rest of the family willing to accept him back?  How were they going to live?  All these thoughts could have kept him from going.  He could have just stayed there and lived out his life wondering what might have been.

Yet, when God tells you to do something, you better do it.  At the same time when God tells us to do something He always gives us this promise, "I WILL BE WITH YOU."  What did he tell the disciples when he gave them the Great Commission?  Surely "I will be with you...".  What did He tell Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon and everyone since?  I WILL BE WITH YOU>

It is in God's presence, that He is WITH us, that we find comfort and peace.  It is in knowing that He will never leave us or forsake us that we live our lives in boldness and confidence.  It is because God is WITH us that we are able to love with His love, forgive with His forgiveness, and rejoice with His joy!  Live in His presence today and know that His presence will never go away!

Prayer:  Lord God, thank you for being present and accounted for in my life.  Help me to remember that you are right there every day.  Amen.

"Every Man for Himself"
January 13, 2015

flowerJesus said to her, "I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" John 11:25-26
Mary Dickson and Martha Dixon had names that sounded very similar.

But there was far more in common with the lives of these ladies than a comparable last name. Dickson and Dixon were sisters; more specifically, they were twin sisters. By God's grace they had come into this world together some 90 years ago.

But their sharing goes even deeper.

Having grown up together Dickson and Dixon eventually were married ... to brothers. Yes, I know the last names are not the same, but that is only because one of the boys, wishing to re-enlist in the armed services, changed his name. Sometime, years ago, Dickson and Dixon were widowed.

The last years of their lives were spent living with a granddaughter. She reports Mary and Martha "fought like sisters but loved each other like sisters." So there you have it: two sisters with biblical names and intertwined lives -- and one more detail that needs to be mentioned.

On Christmas Day, Mary and Martha, at the age of 90, died within two hours of each other.

Now it would be nice if I could say these sisters who had done so much together in life, also entered heaven hand-in-hand, Now it may well be that these ladies are in heaven with their Redeemer. I hope they are, but I don't know. On the other hand, I do know that if they are in heaven it is because both Dickson and Dixon had an individual and a personal faith in the Savior.

You see, not even twin sisters, women who have shared their days, their friends, and many of life's experiences, are able to provide assistance for the other at the moment of death. Mary Dickson and Martha Dixon had to believe on their own, and they had to die on their own -- just as you and I must believe and die on our own.

Now you may wonder why this devotion brings up such an obvious point. The answer is found in many congregations. There we can see a sizable number of people whose parents are pillars of the congregation but who have no active relationship with the Savior themselves. There we can see folks who count on their ancestors, founding fathers of the church, to get them into heaven.

These people are relying on an unfounded hope. The truth is this: nobody -- nobody, that is, except for Jesus, will be able to stand by our sides during the final moments of life.

And that's all right.

It is all right because Jesus is the one Person, the exactly right Person that we need. Jesus came into this world to live for individuals, to die for individuals, and to rise for individuals. Through the Christ's great sacrifice, the Lord's love and saving grace has been extended to each and every sinner, and it needs to be received by each individual.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that while Jesus came to save the world, He has also come to save me. Grant that every soul may be brought to faith in the one and only Redeemer. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

A LOT OF THE CONFIRMATION KIDS SIGNED UP YESTERDAY!!  STILL A LOT MORE SPACES TO FILL!

PROJECTIONISTS NEEDED FOR ALL OF THE WORSHIP SERVICES!!

I know a lot of you enjoy not having to flip through the hymnal and bulletin in order to participate in worship every week.  It is an extremely special blessing to visitors who aren't familiar with church and worship.  What a blessing technology can be.  Over the last few years there have been many who have volunteered to help keep this going by being projectionists.

Unfortunately over the last couple years the number of volunteers has dwindled, down to five and they need YOUR help!!  All it requires is that you pay attention and follow along with the service and push a few keys on the keyboard.   I will give you a quick tutorial before you do it the first time.  And don't worry about making mistakes.  Everyone does, and most of the little hiccups and mistakes that happen with it are MY fault!   Please consider filling in some of the dates so that we can keep this going!

I also want to publicly thank JOHN HACHTEL who faithfully, week after week, puts the whole service on the powerpoint for us.  This can take three hours or more a week depending on the service.  Thank you John!!  Please just hit reply and fill in the services you'd like to do.   If we don't have volunteers for a specific service we won't have it.

For TODD PONDER, former band teacher/director and friend to many at St. John's, who suffered a massive stroke and can't do anything but move his eyes.  He is unable to breathe on his own. Here is a link to a fund that was started to help the family as they will have astronomical hospital and rehab bills for a long time to come.   At the bottom of the page it also has updates as to his progress.  http://www.gofundme.com/hp1ed8?pc=mb_em

For OUR CONTINUED FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND SPEECH in the United States, that we would continue to be able to freely speak the truth even in the face of opposition.

For our NATION'S MILITARY LEADERS AND SOLDIERS as they figure out what to do about the imminent threats from ISIS.

For MILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, who are being persecuted to the point of death for their faith.

DEVOTION:  When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.  They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekkah.  Genesis 26:34-35

This devotion might rub some people the wrong way, but here it goes.

When you are looking for someone to marry, one of the most important things to consider is the faith of the person.  Does he or she share the same faith as you.  Is that person going to tear you down and demean your faith or is he going to lift you up, encourage, and support you in your faith?

The reason Beeri and Basemath were sources of grief for Isaac and Rebekkah was because they were foreign people who didn't believe in the one true God, nor did they follow Him.  This was a problem over and over again for the people of Israel.  God warned them that they should not marry foreign, unbelieving women.  They still did, and guess what, it led to the downfall first of Israel and then Judah.  Just read about Solomon's downfall and the source of most of his discontent and grief.

I thank God every day that God gave me Karin.  I had been searching for quite some time and had been dating several women with whom I tried to make it work, but their Religion and their faith was not in connection with mine.  They would not have lifted me up or supported me in my faith.  I take it for granted way too often that I have a wife who lifts me up and believes strongly in what the Scriptures say about God and faith!

That's not to say that we don't disagree on things.  There are probably more things that we disagree on than that we agree on.  But when it counts and when it means the difference between growing or weakening in faith and agreeing on the fact that Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin, death, the devil and hell, and how He rose again from the dead for us, we completely agree and that gives me more peace than any other agreement ever could!

My prayer for you is that your significant other is on the same page as you when it comes to what you believe and that you both grow in faith daily until the day that the Lord makes your faith complete, and if you're not equally yoked when it comes to faith, God, the Holy Spirit,  will bring you in agreement that Jesus is the Son of God, that he died on the cross to save you, and that you are saved by grace through faith in Him!

Prayer:  Lord God, bless the marriages and those looking forward to marriage with a strong bond of faith so that they can continue to grow together in you and love each other according to Your Word.  Amen.

YESTERDAY"S QUIZ ANSWER:    Who visited Abraham to tell him that Sarah was going to have a child?  God visited him in the form of three men.  (Some say it was God and two angels.  Others say it was God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in human form.)  Whatever the case, it was God who visited him.
