DEVOTION:  For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

This is the text for the sermon this weekend which is Holy Cross weekend.  We celebrate the cross, not because of the cross in and of itself, but because of what happened on those dirty old ragged pieces of wood that Jesus was nailed to.  Jesus paid the ultimate and total sacrifice for all of our sins.  It was his very life given up for us that we celebrate today.

To those who are perishing eternally because of unbelief this truth folly (foolishness) and is stupid for several reasons.
1.  People who don't believe in Jesus don't feel a need for salvation from sin, because to them sin isn't sin.  (Atheists)

2. If they do believe that they are sinners, they don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah (Jews fall into this category).

3. They may believe that they are sinners and they might even think that Jesus could be the Savior, but they don't want His forgiveness and salvation either because they don't think they deserve it or because they love their sin more.

To US who are being saved it is the power of God!  The message that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price and rescue us from hell is the POWER OF GOD FOR THE SALVATION OF EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES!!

Those who preach a different gospel are really preaching no good news at all.  It is a false gospel.  It is heresy.  As pastors and as churches we need to always keep our preaching and teaching focused on the sinfulness of man and the salvation of Jesus on the cross.  If we start talking about saving ourselves, or the power within us, or the good deeds we "must" do we are in extreme danger of being lost forever.  Let's keep the power of God focused on the message of the cross.  When we do that we will always have it right!  Amen????

Let us pray:  Heavenly Father, help me to keep my focus off of what I can do for you and keep it on what you have already done for me!  You sent Jesus to die on that old rugged cross that we might live forever!  Help us to live our lives in this truth.  Amen.

P.S.  Let us lift up our nation in prayer today at the anniversary of 9/11.
Lord God, we thank you for this great nation where we can worship you freely without danger of being persecuted, killed, or hindered in any way.  Keep our nation safe.  Bless our president and all leaders as they direct our military to go into harm's way to defend our nation and protect other nations and peoples throughout the middle east.  Bring an end to terror and the false teachings of Islam, especially extremist Islam.  Give our military your protection and peace and bring them all back home safely when it is done.  Amen.

"Sure-Footed"

September 10, 2014
thunder bayFor I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Romans 7:18-19
Clive Pai likes to trip people up -- literally.

Of course, that is a sentence which calls for an explanation. Professor Pai, from the University of Illinois, knows that each year, one in three adults will take a tumble. He also knows that in 2010 more than 21,000 people died from injuries, which were related to an unexpected spill.

So that he might study how to help people survive their falls, the professor built a contraption that will trip them up -- on purpose. Now I know that sounds cruel, and it might be if the professor hadn't also invented a harness which stops those falling people from going splat.

During the course of his study, Professor Pai made an interesting discovery. He found out he could trip people up once, twice, maybe three times. But then, quite unexpectedly, people stopped falling.

That's right, they stopped going down in a heap.

Somehow, in someway, the brains of the 65 to 90 year old people Pai was studying learned how to compensate when their footing became insecure. These seniors learned how not to fall, and that new knowledge stayed with them for over a year.

Pai's discovery is a remarkable piece of information, and it may end up helping a great many people.

Sadly, there is no similar discovery when it comes to helping people avoid falling into sin.

In the seventh chapter of Romans, Paul was pretty candid about his sinful propensities. He admits even though he has a desire to honor the Lord and do what is right, he just keeps on sinning. He confesses he fails at doing good and is incredibly successful at doing the evil stuff he has been trying to avoid.

In short, there is nothing which can make us immune from falling into sin.

Thankfully, because of Jesus Christ, we can be saved from the tragedy, the punishment, the negative consequences of sin. Scripture is clear, "the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7b).

That passage means when the devil, the world, and our flesh trip us up, the Lord Jesus is there to pick us up, dust us off, and get us going again. Even more, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, we find our falls can be minimized and our lives can glorify the Redeemer.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am a poor, miserable sinner. No matter how hard I try, I am unable to make a permanent and lasting change in my spiritual condition, which explains why I give thanks that Jesus has done all that was necessary to forgive and save my soul. May I learn to rely on Him. In His Name I ask it. Amen.
