Text: John 14:1-14

Christ is risen. He is risen, indeed; and His presence with His promises are the source of real, lasting peace for all who trust in Him. Amen.

Nothing can be more upsetting or nerve-racking than finding out that you're all alone or that you will be all alone, especially if you weren't ready for it. There are times in life that give us glimpses of what it feels like to be all alone.

Just a few months ago, many of us were watching college basketball during what's called "March Madness." There were moments during those games when it wasn't madness or confidence, but nervousness, anxiety, even fear. There were a few games when you could see it in the eyes of the players. At the end of the contest, with the game on the line, they found themselves standing on the freethrow line, in a close game, and all eyes were on them. The hopes and dreams of the team and the schools were in their hands and it didn't matter if everyone was cheering for them or cheering against them. It didn't matter if they had the greatest coach or the worst. At that point in the game, they were standing there all alone, on their own. Some had confidence, but many didn't. In fact, one team missed most of their free shots at the end of the game and wound up losing a game they should have won. Being alone, feeling pressure, even fear, it can do that to you, can't it?

But in real life, when it's not a game, there is an aloneness that can be really unsettling, even debilitating. A friend of mine felt that way when he was young, only 6 years old. He experienced real fear and aloneness at his grandfather's funeral. Funerals can really challenge us, make us afraid, even feel alone.

Well, he felt that and more. You see, during the viewing of the body he inadvertently fell asleep on a chair in the back of the parlor. Apparently nobody saw him there, so when visiting hours were over and no one saw him running around; his family thought that he had gone home with one of the other aunts or uncles. They left without him. Here was this little 6-year old boy, alone with his dead grandfather all by himself. When he woke up, let's just say, he was scared and he sure felt all alone. He said, "It sure was great when I finally heard my father's voice calling out for me." It was great to realize that my father was there and he had come back just for me.

Alone, fearful, then relieved. That's what Thomas and all the disciples were feeling in our text.

Think about was going on all around them. They were aware that their Master, Jesus, would soon leave them. He had told them that one of them would betray Him, Peter would deny Him, and Judas had mysteriously left. What was going on? They were confused and getting nervous. Jesus would later add some more hard truth to their lives, telling them that because of their faith in Him, they would be persecuted, become outcasts, hated by the world, and many would even die for believing in Him.

Yet, in view of all of that, Jesus incredibly says, 'don't let your hearts be troubled.'
In fact, He promises that even in the middle of those times when you feel all alone, all by yourself, don't worry, He's there for you and no matter what happens in this life, He's coming back to take you home to be with Him in heaven eternally.

Just like the voice of my friend's father brought real peace to a scared little boy, so the words and the promises of Jesus bring peace to the disciples in the text, to people like you and me today too. Jesus assured another disciple, Philip, that just by seeing Him (Jesus that is) Philip would also be seeing His Father, because Jesus is "God in the Flesh." That calmed Philip's confused and troubled heart. And, Jesus assured Thomas that even though He would be leaving him (and the others) He would return to take them, and all who believe, home with Him in heaven. In view of Christ's coming suffering and death, this promise of real resurrection and life was power to calm Thomas' confused and troubled heart too.

So, here's a reassuring thought, one that you can build your life on; God's Presence, plus God's promise delivers God's peace! Even more boldly, Christ's Presence, plus Jesus Christ's promises equals God's eternal life and peace for all who trust in Him!

When you have a promise from Jesus, God in the flesh, when you have His gracious Presence with you by the power of His Spirit through His Word, you have His peace, a peace that can help you face the struggles of this life until He comes to bring you home with Him in heaven eternally!

Do you believe that? Do you believe that? That's the challenge of this text for you and me! That's our real present Savior making us a powerful promise, to give us His peace for this life and the life to come!

Now the disciples in the text, they didn't know what to make of all this. Philip says, "Jesus, just show us God the Father, that will help, that will be enough." And Jesus gets even more clear, "Philip, if you have seen me, you have seen the Father!"

Jesus Himself is God's clear answer for their life, for your life, now and forever. Get to know Him. He, and only He, can take our confusions, our fears, our aloneness and overcome them with His Presence, His promises, and His peace!

In fact, Jesus says something even more incredible. He says that when it comes to the things that really matter for your life and mine, He says, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life for you!"

You see, the Bible won't let us diminish Jesus. The Apostle John records 7 "I am" statements from Jesus' lips. Jesus says of Himself:
John 6: 35, 48 I am the bread of life.
John 8: 12, 9:5 I am the light of the world.
John 10:9 I am the door.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd.
John 11:25 I am the resurrection and the life.
John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life.
In fact, Jesus boldly says, "I'm God in the flesh" or as He says it in John 8:58 "Before Abraham was, I am!"

So, Jesus is no mere noble Martyr, a kind of Superstar like we wish He could be! Have you ever heard of Frederick Buechner, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and writer? He made this comment about Jesus, "If all the resurrection means is that Jesus' spirit lives on like Abraham Lincoln's or Adolf Hitler's, but that otherwise He is just as dead as anyone else who cashed in 2000 years ago, then, as St. Paul puts it, 'our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.' Buechner goes on to say if the enemies of Jesus succeeded for all practical purposes in killing Him permanently around AD 30, then like Socrates, Thomas More, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King, Jr., and so on, He is simply another saintly victim of the wickedness and folly of men, and the cross is a symbol of ultimate defeat." Well, Jesus will have none of that.

Into this rebellious world, hell-bent on its own destruction, into our confused lives, unsure of where we're going or who we are; Jesus comes with some plain talk. He says, "In all things look to me, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life!" Into all confusion and trouble, Jesus says, "Look to Me for your answers. I'm God in the Flesh for you!"

Here's truth that will transform your life; Christ's Presence, plus Jesus Christ's promises equal God's eternal life and peace for all who trust Him!

Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, "Truth is incontrovertible. Panic may resent it; ignorance may deride it; malice may distort it; but there it is." When it comes to Jesus, when you're looking for what holds, what is real, what lasts, it's Him; He is the Way to God, the Truth of God, and the Life of God for you.

His Presence, His promises can deliver you real peace! And that's the truth of the Bible for you, for me, for all.

The disciples again were afraid of this truth talk that Jesus was sharing with them. He was telling them that He had to die for them, for all. He had to leave them for a time. They were frightened, scared, feeling the ache of possibly being alone without Him. We've all felt those things at times.

But Jesus doesn't just tell them the truth to prepare them for the trouble to come; He tells them that truth for their ultimate rescue and salvation. His truth not only is something that a person can hold on to, His truth holds on to us. It comes back for us. It delivers what He says. Christ's Presence with His promises gives real peace because you can count on Him to deliver it no matter what and He will see it through, right through to the end.

In the midst of this gut-wrenching talk, Jesus says this incredible thing. No matter what happens in the lives of these disciples in the near future, don't worry; He would come back for them, they could count on it. He had the power to go to the cross, to suffer a death they couldn't endure, to give them a life they couldn't earn, to make heaven possible where it was beyond the realm of their possibility, and He would ensure the fulfillment and the delivery of those promises to them. Period.

Though His work on the cross would take them from Him for a moment, He would come back for them, just like He said! Though His ascension to heaven would take Him from us for a moment, He will come back again to judge the living and the dead and bring His people to be with Him in places already prepared. There is real peace when there is a promise you can count on from a Person who fulfills their promises just like they said they would!

A local pastor told a story of a terrifying day at a New Jersey beach for a father, his son, and his daughter. The kids were 8 and 10, but they were good swimmers. In fact, they enjoyed swimming together in the Atlantic Ocean quite a lot. On this particular day, a few years ago, they went swimming like they had done so many times before.

As they swam, they got farther and farther from shore. Suddenly the father realized that the tide was carrying them out to sea. It had also separated them from each other. Trying to stay calm, he searched for both children, and realized that he had to help his son back to the beach for his safety and then return to rescue his daughter. So just before turning to the shore, he called out to her, "Mary, I am going to shore for help. If you get tired, remember what I taught you, stay calm, turn on your back, and remember you can float all day long. And I promise you, I promise you, I'll come back for you; trust me."

He and the boy made it to shore and then there was a frantic search for the girl. Finally, after four hours, they found her far out in the ocean, away from the shore. But, they found her calmly swimming on her back, not frightened at all.

There was a tremendous amount of relief when the calm girl was finally back on shore. Everyone wondered how she could be so at peace. And they were even more stunned when she gave such a simple answer. She said, "Daddy said he would come back for me and, like he said, I could float all day, so I swam and I floated because I knew he would come."

That little girl knew that her father would do all in his power to come for her no matter the cost to himself. But, when it comes to things like forgiveness, life, and salvation; it's going to take more than merely the love of a good mom or dad; it's going to take the love of a Savior, God in the flesh, for you and me. The Bible says that the work of Jesus isn't merely the best efforts of the best human being that ever lived. It's infinitely more than that. He doesn't merely show the way, share the truth, and shed some light on a situation. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

In fact, when John says that "Jesus is the Way," he's saying that this is a Way that has been paved for us.

It was paved when God made a promise to Adam and Eve. It was paved when God made Abraham the father of His promises for all to see. It was paved when Moses spoke of deliverance to the Pharaoh of Egypt; a deliverance that only could happen from the God whose Name was "I AM." It was paved when Jesus, the "I AM" in the Flesh, went to the cross, went through the cross by the fact of His resurrection, to make a way back to the Father through His life, His death, and His resurrection.

That's a way home that gives all who believe, real peace now because the One who made it possible is with us preparing an eternal place for us, and promises to come back for all those who trust in Him, to take us to Himself. He makes that way possible, where there is no way!
In the comedy movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," there was one little, silly phrase which became very popular, especially among young people. One of the two (I forget which one) made some revolutionary, mind-boggling suggestion. The other responded in disbelief, "No way;" which prompted the simple response of belief, "Way."

Well, this text is talking about something more revolutionary and mind-boggling than any suggestion in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Just think of some of the revolutionary, mind-boggling truths of the Bible.

Ready? The Bible says God loved His fallen creation so much that He became like them in the incarnation, that's the message of Christmas, and not only did God become Man in Christ Jesus, but Jesus became our sin for us, "so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor. 5:21). Disbelief says, "No way!" Faith explodes, "Way."

Or, think of this; we just said this a few weeks ago, "Christ is risen! He is risen indeed and lives and reigns for all eternity." Disbelief says, "No way!" Faith says, "Way!"
And then it gets real personal. The Bible says, after our dead bodies are buried and turn to dust, they too will rise gloriously on the Last Day. For those who trust in Him, because He lives, we will live eternally also! No way! Faith says, "Way!"

But our lesson today goes even further. Not only was Jesus born for us, died for us, and rose again for us that we might live in Him; He promises that, no matter what is happening to us for the moment, heaven is our home. He's already prepared it just for us.

No way! Way! "No way; yes, way," says the Way, the Truth, and the Life for you!
God's Presence in Christ plus God's promises through Christ equals God's peace with Christ forever!

That's what Jesus is all about. His Presence with you through His Spirit-filled Word, His promises that He Himself guarantees, and fulfills and delivers; that's peace that you can build your life upon, now and forever.

There are times in this world where we can feel all alone. It might be a terrifying day at a funeral or a time when it seems like we are being washed out to the sea of uncertainty or fear. No matter what you may be feeling at the moment; please know this; Jesus knows you and me, better than we know ourselves. And He promises that He will not leave us as orphans on our own, but will come back for us as surely as He died and rose again for us when He walked this earth.

Put your faith in Him. Let Him come close to you by the power of the Holy Spirit through His Word and sacraments; and let that equation for peace be yours today as you put your faith in Jesus Christ. For God's Presence plus God's promises all in Jesus Christ, bring God's peace to your life now and forever. Put your faith in that Way, that Truth, that Life for you in Christ.

Amen.

LUTHERAN HOUR MAILBOX (Questions & Answers) for May 18, 2014
Topic: Should the Church Celebrate Cultural Holidays?

ANNOUNCER: Should the Church celebrate cultural holidays? Pastor Gregory Seltz responds to questions from listeners. I'm Mark Eischer. Pastor, I can understand why a greeting card company might like to have all kinds of special days and commemorations; but to what extent do you think the Church should celebrate cultural holidays?

SELTZ: It's an appropriate question, Mark. Last week we celebrated Mother's Day.

ANNOUNCER: Right, and to what extent do you think the Church should observe things, let's say Grandparents' Day, Super Bowl Sunday, or Labor Day?

SELTZ: Well, first, I think we have to set people's hearts and minds at ease and let them know that the church is not AGAINST cultural holidays. There is nothing in the Bible prohibiting special celebrations in society. But it's a good question because Christians need to ask how much we conform to the world and how much do we let the world set the agenda for us as believers.

ANNOUNCER: It's conceivable that you could get so wrapped up in so many cultural celebrations that you end up losing your focus on Jesus and the life He gives, that could be set aside.

SELTZ: That's where we need to strike a balance. Remember when Jesus prayed for His disciples in John, chapter 17, He said, "I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. So I ask You Father, not to take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one" (John 17:14-16 ESV). So, Jesus kept His disciples IN the world, but He didn't want them to be OF it. We live in that same delicate balance. We are not supposed to let the culture run roughshod over the church and have the message or focus of the church disappear, but we're also not called to remove ourselves from the culture so that no contact exists anymore.

ANNOUNCER: God calls us to be a light to the world, to give witness to His grace and truth.

SELTZ: And to do that we need to be in the world--connected with the culture, if you will. However, as Romans, chapter 12 tells us, "Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable, and perfect" (Romans 12:2 ESV).

ANNOUNCER: Okay, taking that all into consideration, then, how should the church treat cultural holidays?

SELTZ: Well, with this balance, Mark, on the one hand we need to recognize what people are thinking and doing. Not to mention Mother's Day in some way--in the sermon, or prayers, or announcements, would be overlooking where people are at in our culture. It would also be sacrificing the opportunity to "take every thought captive" and make it obedient to Christ, as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 10:5. So, if you can connect the culture to Christ, you've taken that cultural component and caused it to be a platform for the proclamation of the Gospel.

ANNOUNCER: But there is another side to that.

SELTZ: Well, there may even be two sides, actually. First, there are some cultural connections that don't serve the Gospel well. On one hand, a day like Mother's Day allows us to see the Biblical themes of family, self-sacrificial love, and the role every woman has in mentoring and disciplining others in their family. God compares Himself to a mother in the Bible. It's a solid Biblical theme, it brings blessing to people.

ANNOUNCER: But, there are occasions that may not serve the Gospel.

SELTZ: You're right, and making a big deal out of these may be a stretch. I remember something called Earth Day; and a lot of people thought, "Well, it must be about recycling or conservation. But, if you dig down deep in it, it's actually celebrating a whole different religious point of view, and earth even becomes God in some of those celebrations. So, that cultural celebration can't be the sole source for the church's agenda. And that's why the church year that brings us through the life of Christ and growth as Christ's followers, that's a solid, time-tested rhythm for the church as we deal with the headlines that are around the world. So, headlines can't dictate the agenda and they can't replace balanced teaching for the full counsel of God. But, we better not ignore the headlines either.

ANNOUNCER: It's sometimes not easy to find the balance.

SELTZ: No, there isn't; there is some tension there to be sure; but if followers of Jesus keep their hands firmly on the Scriptures, their eyes on Christ while at the same time staying attentive to the needs and rhythms of the world, a balanced message and emphasis will result in our prayer life, in our Bible study, in our worship, and in our conversations with believers and unbelievers alike.

ANNOUNCER: Thank you, Pastor Seltz. This has been a presentation of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

"History Revised"

May 15, 2014
island roadAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Way back in grade school we had to memorize various short poems. Perhaps some of you remember one of those couplets: "In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue; And found this land, land of the Free, Beloved by you, beloved by me."

Of course, that was way back in the days when Columbus was regarded as a magnificent explorer and an exemplary human being.

Today, by every meaningful barometer, Columbus has been demoted. No longer do many people consider him to be a "good guy." More and more he is becoming thought of as a despoiler, a destroyer of civilizations, an enslaver of Native Americans, and a mass murderer of unprecedented proportions.

Perhaps that explains why, without a dissenting vote, the Minneapolis city council recently decided to jettison Columbus Day and, in its place, celebrate Indigenous People's Day. Now I can certainly understand why Native Americans might wish to see Columbus dethroned. Their argument, "Columbus couldn't discover this hemisphere because our ancestors were there to greet him," makes sense.

All of this means Columbus has now joined the pilgrims, and so many other historical figures, whose facts are no longer considered to be factual, whose truth is untrue, and whose legacy has been revised beyond recognition.

It gets to the point where many folks are pretty sure they can't be pretty sure about anything.

Now understand, this Daily Devotion is not designed to defend Columbus, or pilgrims, or how past generations looked upon and remembered them. Like you and me, these folks were sinners, and because they were sinners they messed up. Sometimes they messed up monumentally.

Still, there is a danger here.

That danger arises when Jesus is thrown in with the wrongdoers and He -- along with Holy Scriptures -- end up being dismantled, dissected and disregarded. When the Lord's blood-bought story of salvation is relegated to the realm of myth and legend, truth becomes suspect and the faith which the Holy Spirit wishes to bestow, seems to be a questionable thing at best.

St. Paul knew what he was saying when he told Timothy that the Lord's Word was designed to make us, along with out faith, complete. Such completeness cannot be based on that which is unsure and uncertain. Jesus Christ was, is, and always will be, "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (see John 1:29). His Name continues to be the only Name which saves.

And that is the truth, no matter what the deniers and doubters, the cynics and skeptics might think or say.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I always trust Your Word and be given an unshakable faith in Your Son whose life became my ransom from sin, Satan and death. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

DEVOTION: "How long will you limp between two opinions?  If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him."  The Story p. 204

So many people, including many Christians, even members of St. John's, are limping between two opinions when it comes to God and His Word.  They want to follow God's Word completely, but they have trouble, because what they have been taught by the world about things like evolution, sexuality, and many other things do not agree with what the world says.  So they are torn.  They don't want to believe that what they have been taught and believed for so long is wrong, but they don't want to distrust the Scriptures either.

What to do?  I know!  Why not go by what has been proven for centuries to be the truth?  Why not go by what has stood the test of time?  Why not go by GOD'S WORD?!!  It seems like a no brainer... An Almighty, Supreme, All Knowing, All Present God VS. A fallible,  incorrect, imperfect sinner.  Guess who I'm going to choose?

It's not easy.  It may mean that you have to challenge and even lose some friendships .  It may mean that you may have to get rid of some very long held beliefs.  It may mean that you may have to turn all the way around from where you were going so that you can turn to God.  Let me assure you!!  IT IS WORTH IT!

Nothing gives you more comfort and peace than knowing and abiding by the real truth.  Nothing gives you more satisfaction than living for someone and something other than yourself.  Nothing else will get you to eternal life!  Jesus is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE.  No one comes to the Father except through Him!

Quit limping!  Commit your ways to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will direct your paths!

Prayer: Lord God make me surrender to you that you may move me in the right direction.  Amen.

"Undeserved"

May 13, 2014
Pastor Klaus 3Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1
It was on a rainy night in October of 2012 that Brandon Majewski and his two pals were riding their bikes to get some hot dogs.

That was when the lads were clobbered from behind by a lady driving a sports utility vehicle. Seventeen-year-old Majewski died; the two others were injured. The lady driving the SUV admits she was going about six miles an hour over the speed limit, and she doesn't deny it was a wet, dark road.

Even so, the woman, Sharlene Simon, is now suing the three bike riders whom she hit.

She is suing them, or their families, for $1.35 million. She feels she is owed that amount because of the emotional trauma she suffered in the accident. Simon maintains the accident might not have happened if the "incompetent" bicyclists had applied their brakes properly.

Now I'd like you to stop for a minute and reflect on what you've just heard. The lady is suing the family of the boys she killed or injured because their tragedy traumatized her.

Does anybody else think something is wrong here? Good, I'm glad it's not just me. Now I would like you to hold on to your outrage for a few minutes, or at least until you finish this devotion. It's important that you do, because in some ways that lady represents humanity.

How many times have you not heard someone who has suffered a tragedy say, "Why did God do this?" or "How can you say God is a God of love when He allows cancer, or wars, or rapes, or prejudice, or everything else that is wrong with the human race?"

Once again, stop for a minute and reflect.

It is humanity's greed, selfishness, lust and general sinfulness that are responsible for the sad conditions of this world. Originally, our perfect God gave us a perfect world. It was our disobedience which messed things up -- which still messes things up. God wants us to live in harmony, but we don't. He wants us to love each other, but we refuse. He wants us to trust in Him, but we prefer to rely on ourselves, and then we blame Him when our sins cause things to go wrong and unravel.

Now God, like you, could have become outraged at such injustice. In disappointment and discouragement, He could have washed His hands of humanity and let us wander our own way. He would have been perfectly right in doing just that, but He didn't.

Instead, He continued to love us and reach out to us.

In an incredibly wonderful and absolutely unpredictable act of love, He sent His Son to save us from ourselves. Through Jesus' life, death and resurrection, He calls people to repentance, a change of heart, and a recognition that He still wants what is best for us.

Now, by His grace and the Holy Spirit's power, there is forgiveness, eternal life, and the knowledge that we have received from a loving Lord incredible and unending blessings, which we never earned or deserved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me realize that You have saved me because of who You are and not because of anything I have done. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria.  He settled then in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.  The Story, 219

In one moment, in on verse the whole history of the Israelites changed.  They went from being a sovereign nation to being captives in Assyria.  It went that fast, a traitor, an invasion, and a kill and capture.  What I often think about is the kids in that situation.  What was life like for them?  It is hard to even think about.  They went from playing in their backyard to becoming slaves in a distant land due to circumstances and trouble that they had nothing to do with.

Sometimes our lives are like that.  Everything is going just fine, we are living our lives and enjoying what God has given us. All of a sudden something, beyond our control and due to nothing directly of our fault, our lives are turned upside down.  It can be devastating and life ending when these things take place.

It is at these times in our life, when we can't rely on our circumstances or ourselves, that we can and should and must rely on God and His Word to us.  His promises are eternal and everlasting.  When everything else in the world changes, His Word does not change.  When everything else is going wrong, God's Word is right!  When there is trouble all around, God's Word provides the safety security and peace you need.

How does God's Word do such a thing?  It does it because it is the truth.  It is living and active!  It doesn't return to Him void.  It will perform what God sent it out to do!

Prayer: Lord God, bless us as we go through the challenges and troubles of this life with the certainty and power of Your Word and life.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: How did Elijah eat in the wilderness when he ran away from Ahab?  The first time he was fed by God as He sent ravens to him with bread and meat.  The second time he sent an angel who had some sort of "angel food cake".  (It's a joke)

Text: 1 Peter 2:19-25

Christ is risen, He is risen, indeed; and loving others His way, with His power, that's the only way that things can really change! Amen!

Today is a special day for many people, but it also may be a day that some dread. Please allow me to explain. Today, it's Mother's Day. That means flowers, dinners out, and celebrations for many people today. But for some it means sadness and frustration.

Isn't it strange that a day meant to be celebrated could also become a day of suffering?

Now, please know that I'm not trying to rain on your parade or be depressing. The hugs and the gratitude of children, the memories of family, and the blessings of self-sacrificial moms are so special and precious. But the very practice of motherhood and the aspiration to be a mom is all about serving. It is about emptying yourself. And that can be painful.

The desire to be a mother is a desire to do something really good in life. But it also means signing up to do something that is not easy. Think about it.

Today, there are many women hoping and praying to become mothers, but infertility has caused heartache and frustration. Wonderful, honorable, and sincere ladies want to start families. They want to raise children. It's a good and worthy pursuit. But it is causing them disappointment and pain.

On this very day there are parents who have been blessed with children, but they're tired. They're worn out. Some are tending to the fatiguing daily needs of their children. Others are adding to those duties the special work of being caregivers for children who are ill or disabled. It's Mother's Day, but some of these weary moms are wondering if they can keep going.

And what about the moms whose hearts are broken today as they deal with rebellion and rejection from children who are going through the stormy years of adolescence and young adulthood? There are plenty of troubled adult children who bring parents to their knees in prayer and tears.

There are also mothers who are walking through loneliness and grief; mothers of soldiers far away clinging to the hope of seeing their children again. Mothers who are experiencing an empty nest for the first time are struggling with a new season away from their children. And there are too many mothers who are grieving the loss of their children, hurting today as they wrestle with broken and unfulfilled dreams.

Motherhood is a good thing, a worthy pursuit. It brings great joy and blessing. But motherhood can also bring pain. Today, you may be someone suffering that pain right now.
It is perplexing, isn't it? Why is such suffering connected with such a good thing? In fact, why doesn't God remove suffering from good things, good pursuits, and worthy actions?

Well, the Bible helps speak to this question. In 1 Peter, chapter two, the Apostle says: For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly...this is a gracious thing in the sight of God (1 Peter 2:19-20).

The Bible says that enduring suffering and doing good in times of adversity brings a special gift to the world. It displays the grace of God.

Have you heard of a woman named Mary Jo Copeland? She established the "Sharing and Caring Hands" ministry in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mary Jo works with the homeless, the working poor, and children in need. After spending the first six years of her life with her grandparents, Mary Jo was reunited with her mother and father as a little girl. But it didn't take long for her to discover that her father was an abusive man who was not able to support his family.

Mary Jo recalled her father's rage and said, "I'd sit outside for hours praying that my mother wouldn't die." She said that her mother's main focus in life was to keep her father from becoming angry. But managing chaos and pain didn't work. The house was in disarray, dishes hardly were ever washed, and the bathtub was so dirty that Mary Jo couldn't take baths. This cascaded into more suffering and persecution at school. Mary Jo became a loner. Her unwashed body didn't smell good. Other children made fun of her. She kept withdrawing and her grades suffered. That compounded the abuse at home. Mary Jo's father looked at her poor report cards and called her stupid and worthless.

But one thing kept Mary Jo going. In school she had a religion class. She heard something very special as she studied the Bible with her classmates. Mary Jo said, "I was enthralled with the idea that God loves us all equally and unconditionally." God's grace was shining in the middle of suffering. Mary Jo saw how God sent His only Son to give His life for her and for the whole world. Even when Jesus was abused and rejected, He sacrificed Himself to give us the gift of His love, His forgiveness, and His devotion to us forever.

Then Mary Jo had a new thought. She said, "Soon I realized there were lots of children like me--some even worse off. I began to know that God had some special task in mind just for me."
You see, our natural reaction during times of difficulty is to become bitter. It is to turn inward. It is to lash out at God and others.

But if we're suffering for something we did wrong, the pain makes sense. It seems deserved. But to do good in the midst of pain and to suffer for doing good shows that something unique is happening. Something unnatural is at work. Something supernatural is taking place. Goodness displayed in the dark valley of suffering can only be attributed to God's grace and presence. That is what we see on the cross when Jesus cried out, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they do" (Luke 23:34). That is what we see in God's sacrifice to reach each of us in the darkness and rebellion of our sin. That is what we see when God has mercy on us in our messy and broken lives.

You may have heard the expression: "God is good; all the time. All the time; God is good." Psalm 136 declares, "Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever" (Psalms 136:1). That doesn't mean that everything that happens in our corrupt, confused, and chaotic world is good. Far from it. But it does mean that, in the midst of everything wrong, everything evil, and everything painful, God's goodness appears as a light shining in the darkness. God's goodness is present as living water in a barren desert. God's goodness appears as love and hope in the wilderness of pain and suffering.

It's goodness we can see clearly when we look at the Person and work of Jesus Christ in the Bible.

But as Christians, one of the first things we're called to do as Christ's people is to let others see Christ in us for them. God's grace is grace to be seen!

One of the ways that such grace is seen in a sinfully, dark world, is when God's people do good and shine the grace of God in Jesus Christ to the world, even when unjustly suffering for it.

Verse 21 of 1 Peter 2 says this, "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example, so that you might follow in his steps." You are called by God to be a "good-doer" not a "do-gooder." It's one word in the Greek text. "Good-doers" display God's grace. "Good-doers" follow the pattern of Jesus. They follow in His tracks and imitate His example. They know that they are "saved by grace," that theirs is not a "do-gooder' look-at-me lifestyle, but a "good-doer" life of sharing God's love with others, the way He gives it to them!

They don't do good to be saved; they do good because God has already done all things well for them, saving them by grace, lavishing them with the love of God in Christ.

This is your calling; this is your calling from God as you walk through all the rigors of this life.

You see, anyone can do poorly. Anyone can act badly. That's easy! Just watch reality TV!

When the pressure is on, anyone can fight, rant, rave, and be mean. Those are our sinful defaults.

When life is challenging, you can choose to imitate pompous athletes and out-of-control celebrities. You can be like the raving coach on the sidelines or the spoiled child who gets everything he or she wants. Or you can hear the calling of God to do good even when the winds of life are blowing hard against you, even when you feel awful, even when your dreams seem to be dashed for good. And when you do, the world takes notice. When you are a "good-doer" in the face of adversity, in the face of inconvenience, and in the face of disappointment--yes, even in the face of persecution--you walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ and you show the world His grace.

You heard the words of the Bible: "To this you have been called."

Mary Jo Copeland heard this call of Christ. Life wasn't all peaches and cream for her after she grew up. After meeting her high school sweetheart and getting married, Mary Jo and her husband started a family. They had twelve children! Twelve children! But even amidst all that joy Mary Jo slipped into depression. She became addicted to prescription medications and then to alcohol. She stayed in her house for three years trying to keep up with the demands of family and going through the motions the best she could.

Finally, her husband said to her, "Mary, you can't bottle up all the love that's inside of you. Look at what you've accomplished with our kids. You've got too much to share with the rest of the world!" So Mary Jo got outside of herself, she started to volunteer. She helped feed street people and served the poor. Mary Jo rediscovered her heart for the hurting. She soon recruited volunteers who committed to serving a meal to the poor once every month. Working through her own pain and need, she bought clothing and shoes for families in need. Finally, she founded the ministry called "Sharing and Caring Hands." It is a "compassionate response to the needs of the poor." It is doing good because Jesus Christ has done so much good for us.

As she washes the feet of the poor, Mary Jo says, "Jesus washed His Apostles' feet. He came to serve, not to be served. Can we do less?"

What if you, too, are inspired to be a "good-doer" in your life? What if, with Jesus as your pattern for life, you set out to do good no matter what the situation--to show that God is good and that He lives in you? What if you took this calling from God's Word very seriously and even pledged to withstand suffering for doing good in His Name? How might your life be different?

How might other's lives be different? What if your attitude changed when life isn't going your way? Would people be blessed by you as you took a genuine interest in them and gave a listening ear? Would your complaints be turned into prayers and your pain be used to grow your compassion for fellow sufferers?

Would adversity become an opportunity to strengthen your calling and grow in displaying God's grace to the world?

This is a challenging calling, no doubt. You can't do this under your own power. But remember what the Bible says in Galatians 2 to all who trust and follow Jesus Christ, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20-21).

In fact, for us as believers, doing good is your way of life. When you do good in the midst of adversity, it is Jesus Christ living in you. And that is His promise. You were baptized into His suffering and death so that you could walk in the newness of life in Him (Romans 6:4). Jesus lives in you by the ongoing and eternal presence of His Holy Spirit who came to dwell within you at your Baptism, who continues to come to you through His Word so you can live as His new creation. 1 Peter, chapter two, says, [Jesus] committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He (Jesus) bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed (1 Peter 2:22-24).

Being a "good-doer" is a gift, not a burden or an impossible challenge. Through Jesus Christ you live in His righteousness; you have been healed. Just as Mary Jo Copeland was healed of her pain, her addiction, and her depression, you have been brought back to the Shepherd of your soul. In Him is your strength.

I remember hearing a young mother exclaim after she had been about the parenting task for a few years. She said, "I've become my mother!" She was saying what her mother used to say and doing what her mother used to do. She was making the same rules and thinking in the same ways.
That's what happens as Jesus pours His grace into your life. You become like Him. You shine His light. You share His love even when times get tough.

Dear friend, I know what the world is like. I've served in some of the toughest cities in our country, in New York, in LA. I know this world has problems that seem insurmountable. But, will you pause today with me and just consider the good Jesus can do through you for others? I know there are pains in loving others. I know there is difficulty in being a good friend, a good husband, a good wife, a good parent. But God has put His people in this world for a reason. And reason number one is to be His people for others; good-doers in His Name, His power, so that others might be blessed as well. By the power of His Holy Spirit, let the goodness of God wash over you. I pray that it renews and blesses you today with the joy of eternal life in the life you live, with the people you serve. By God's Spirit, rest in the grace of God and be comforted by the friendship of Jesus and let that grace and love be expressed through your words and actions so others can be blessed too.

What a world this would be if mouths were filled with blessing instead of deceit, if insults were returned with God's grace instead of more abuse, if people would trust God to be in charge of life as an opportunity to serve others in His Name!

Mary Jo Copeland was given an award a few years ago. She was celebrated as one of America's ten most caring people. The award lauded "those exceptional few who by their selfless acts ennoble the human race."

Isn't it amazing that selfless acts can ennoble the human race? But it's true, isn't it?

That's why the Apostle Peter said, "For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people" (1 Peter 2:15). And Jesus said, "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

What if believers in Christ were known best for doing good; God's good for others? And what if you, as a follower of Jesus, found purpose and strength even in the midst of your adversity by doing good and serving others in His Name? That would change things. Such love in action endures! And remember, when all is said and done, all that we have in this life is the grace and love of God in Jesus Christ, and the good we do for others in His Name.

That's an attitude that can live boldly in this world of real sin and death. That's an attitude that can turn all of our suffering inside out. It's God making everything--yes, everything-good for it would unleash the power of the cross and the power of the Resurrection in our lives and in the lives of those we love, to call all people to life in God's grace in Jesus Christ. That's a life worth receiving, that's a life worth sharing, that's "doing good" God's way and that makes all the difference in our lives, in the world, count on it. God bless you.

Amen.

LUTHERAN HOUR MAILBOX (Questions & Answers) for May 11, 2014
Topic: What Does It Mean To Be "Redeemed"?

ANNOUNCER: What does it mean to be "redeemed?" Pastor Gregory Seltz responds to questions from listeners. I'm Mark Eischer. Pastor, we often speak of Christ as our Redeemer, but what does it mean to be redeemed?

SELTZ: What a great question to hear, Mark. Sometimes "church words" seem strange or unfamiliar, but this word is one that we still use today, one that Christians need to understand.

ANNOUNCER: We redeem coupons and gift cards. I'm wondering if that use of the word is consistent with the Bible's meaning.

SELTZ: It is. In fact, to "redeem" means to get possession of something in exchange for a payment. So, if you have a coupon, you receive the discount in exchange for the printed piece of paper. You may have heard of "Groupon," right?

ANNOUNCER: Right. That's an online promotion company.

SELTZ: Right, Groupon sends out the deal of the day. You can purchase the deal of the day coupon. Then you go to redeem it by going to the store or restaurant or exchanging that coupon for the discount.

ANNOUNCER: And how does that relate to the use of the word in the Bible?

SELTZ: The Bible says, "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed, but with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV). Instead of talking about coupons and products, the Bible talks about Jesus' blood and our lives. We were trapped in sin and headed to eternal death. But God got possession of us by paying for us with the blood of Jesus. He purchased us from death so that we could be in His possession and live eternally. We've been redeemed.

ANNOUNCER: In a sense, you could say that Jesus' blood was the "coupon" that gives us the blessings of forgiveness and eternal life.

SELTZ: You sure could, Mark. But, as you can see, exchanging His life for us was a serious and tremendous sacrifice. The word "redemption" becomes one of amazing meaning and gravity in the context of Jesus' sacrifice. For instance, do you remember when people collected S&H Green Stamps?

ANNOUNCER: Well, I'm probably dating myself here, but I do remember as a kid, I helped my Mom paste those stamps into the books and she could exchange them, then, for a toaster or something.

SELTZ: Yeah. That's exactly how it worked. It took a lot more effort than just buying a Groupon or getting a Groupon. When you bought gas at a gas station or at certain stores, they would give you some of these stamps. And then you would save them, you would fill little books full of them. Once you got to a certain amount of stamps, then you could redeem them for cool prizes like a 13-inch black-and-white TV set, or a picnic basket, or a lawn chair. If you wanted a big item, you could even add money to the stamps to purchase the product. Where the redemption comparison, though, breaks down is that God sent His only Son into the world to die in our place as an exchange for sinners! We weren't cool prizes or nice items for God's house. We were sinners--rebellious and broken people. God didn't get any discount on us. He paid the whole bill because He loved us enough to redeem us; 100%.

ANNOUNCER: All of which illustrates why God's love is the most amazing love this world could ever know, even though it doesn't make sense to us sometimes.

SELTZ: That's why the Biblical word "redeem" is so powerful and moving. There is an account in the Biblical book of Ruth where a man named Boaz serves as a "redeemer" for Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi. These women were helpless and in great need when Boaz stepped in to care for them, provide for them, help them. In fact, Boaz and Ruth fell in love, got married, and had a baby who would become King David's grandfather. So, this legacy of being what was called a "kinsmen-redeemer" pointed to the coming Savior, Jesus Christ.

ANNOUNCER: By the way, the book of Ruth is found in the Old Testament. It's only four brief chapters long; so our listeners could very easily read that and get the whole story.

SELTZ: Wow, what a great idea, and by reading that book of Ruth, listeners would see that the concept of a redeemer was well known in the Old Testament. There's even a famous verse in the book of Job that says, "For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at last he will stand upon the earth" (Job 19:25 ESV). Even in suffering Job had faith that God would rescue him and pay the price to get him back from his suffering and pain--even if he had to wait until he reached heaven.

ANNOUNCER: That passage also inspired the much-loved hymn, "I Know that My Redeemer Lives."

SELTZ: Yes; and the message of the Redeemer in the Bible has given comfort and hope to people throughout the centuries. Perhaps as our listeners use coupons in their daily lives, they can recall the price God paid for us and the love He showed us by redeeming us.

ANNOUNCER: Thank you, Pastor Seltz. And we thank our listener for that question and we hope you will join us again next week. This has been a presentation of Lutheran Hour Ministries.
