"Would You?"

October 2, 2013
Spanish Daily Devotions Penny 8-7-13(Jesus said) "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High ...." Luke 6:35a
Most of you don't know, nor have you ever heard of, Joey Prusak.

That's because 19-year-old Joey, who is a manager at a Dairy Queen in Hopkins, Minnesota, is not the kind of person the media likes to promote. By that I mean Prusak isn't flamboyant, egotistical or immoral. Even so, today's Daily Devotion would like to tell his story.

A few weeks ago Prusak was serving a blind customer when the man dropped a $20 bill. The lady behind him picked it up and pocketed the cash. Politely, Prusak asked the lady to return the money to its rightful owner. The lady refused. That's when Prusak said, "Ma'am, you can either return the $20 bill or you can leave the store, because I'm not going to serve someone as disrespectful as you."

The lady left.

And Prusak ... well, he went to the blind man's table and gave him 20 bucks from his own pocket.

So that's the story. And how did I find out about it? Nope, Prusak didn't call me and say, "Hey, Pastor, guess what I just did?" The truth is neither I, nor anyone else, would have heard that story if it hadn't been for a customer at the restaurant who saw the whole thing and shared the story.

So why did Joey Prusak do what he did?

I'm sure it's not because the manager at the Hopkins DQ makes so much money he can afford to give away 20-dollar bills without noticing their loss. So why did he do it? Prusak, himself, supplies the answer: "I was just doing what I thought was right. I did it without even really thinking about it."

As Jesus promised, Prusak had done something good without expecting anything in return and now he has received some big rewards. Warren Buffet who owns DQ called him up and praised him. People all over have been sending Prusak cash as a way of thanking him for his example.

And what is Prusak doing with that cash? He's giving it to charity because it's the right thing to do.

Cool story, isn't it?

It's the kind of story that leads me to ask would we, God's saved children, have done as well as Joey? When I asked that question of myself, I was pretty positive I would have confronted the lady who stole the original $20. Yes, I would have done that.

But would I have given the man cash from my own wallet? Would you?

If not, maybe it's time we started to try and be the same kind of good-deed doer as is Joey Prusak, the 19-year-old DQ manager in Hopkins, Minnesota.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, quite often our actions speak louder than our talk. In word and deed let us all do that which glorifies the Savior because it is the right thing to do. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  "Praise the Lord!  How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!"  Psalm 147:1
The Hebrew for "Praise the Lord."  is Hallelu  jah.

Is it good and fitting to praise the Lord and to sing praises to His name?  Is it really?  Then why is it that we keep ourselves from dong it?  Why is it that we don't worship like we should?  We sleep in instead.  We come to church with our heads hanging low and scowls on our faces.  We grudgingly look up at the wall and mumble the words.  I could go on and on.

The reason is that we are sinful human beings in our bodies and minds and so every inclination is to go against what God wants.  It is because we are sinful.

But God calls us to fight against sin.  He calls us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to a better, more holy life.  He calls us to worship, praise, and honor Him and give Him glory in every part f our lives.

But the best part is that IT IS GOOD for us!!  Our lives are better.  Our minds and hearts are more at peace.  Our blood pressure goes down.  Our outlook is more heavenward.  Our steps are lighter.  Our lives are brighter.  Our peace is greater.  Our witness is wider!  It truly is good to sing praises to God and to worship His holy name!  It is pleasant and fitting to praise Him!

Let us pray:  Lord god, help us to praise you, not just on Sunday morning, but every minute of every day, simply because it is good, pleasant, an fitting to do so.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  "Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.  They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.  Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.  He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave."  Psalm 107:17-20

Sometimes we disappoint ourselves and others, don't we?  We let ourselves down.  We make grand plans and don't fulfill them.  We try to be good and we aren't.  We do things that seem fun and silly at the time and we pay for them later.  We offend people without ever meaning to by our foolish actions.  I could go on and on.

Daily we can look back at our lives and see a lot of things unfinished, unaccomplished and not even begun.  How many times have you looked back at your life and said, "I wish I would have done things differently".

We all have our faults and failures.  Every one of us can count hundreds of time when, in our foolish humanity, we were rebellious toward god and His way of truth.

Yet, God gives us hope and a future!!  He has forgiven and forgotten that less than stellar past of yours.  He gives you and second, third, and even a hundredth chance.  We can cry to the Lord in our pitiful distress and He will save us.  He will lift us up out of the muck and mire of sin and give us new life.

Then, with the power of the Holy Spirit we can LIVE a new life.  We can live without the guilt of sin weighing us down.  We can look to the future knowing that Christ is in it!  That no matter what happened yesterday, today is a new day full of God's grace, truth, and love.  We can live as His children!!

Let us pray: Lord God help me to learn from my past and then forget about it so that I may move forward in praise, to you and in the love and joy you provide.  Amen.
