DEVOTION:  At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"  He called a little child and had him stand among them.  And he said:  "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore whoever humble himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:1-4

One of the greatest problems I have is humility.  What I mean by this is that I have a hard time putting others before myself.  Don't you?  Maybe that is why the Gospel reading is so hard for us to listen to when it says "Love your neighbor as yourself."  Easier said than done, right?

We are about to begin a Ministry Campaign this Wednesday to focus our attention, efforts and finances on children and youth.  This seems like a no brainer doesn't it?  Yet, when it comes to our finances we get awfully self focused don't we?  Ministry is wonderful and great until it gets between us and our checkbook or wallet.  Suddenly it becomes a little bit harder to justify things like a DCE, especially in an economy such as ours.

But Jesus calls us to something different in the passage above.  He shows us who and what is most important to Him.  What is important to Jesus is the faith of a little child.  What is important to Jesus is faith in Him for everyone.

My greatest fear for my children is not that they will get physically hurt or that they won't reach their full potential and be successful in life.  My greatest fear for my children is that they will somehow fall from faith or even worse, that because of my failure to act or to train them up in the way they should go in the faith, that they somehow get lost.  So it is my duty as a father and as a pastor to make sure that they and all of our children have every opportunity to grow in their faith as much as possible.

In one sentence that is the focus of our campaign this next month and a half. It is to make sure that the children of our congregation and our community have every opportunity and every tool they need to receive and grow in the faith that leads to eternal life!

Please take advantage of our meetings coming up the next three Wednesdays to learn all there is to know about our Ministry Campaign and what a DCE will mean to this congregation!

Let us pray:  Lord God, help us to humble ourselves to put the children and youth as first priority in our lives and in our church.  Amen.

VBS Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who helped with VBS this year and for all who donated food and other supplies.  We had a great week and we couldn't have done it without your help!  We had about 50-60 kids attend and 20 helpers.  We sure do love our big kid helpers.  You all were amazing!

Prayer request from Toni Mauch

I would like to ask for prayers for my brother's wife JoAnn Knoll.  She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be having a lumpectomy and treatments in the next few weeks.  JoAnn is a survivor of colon cancer. Please pray for her and my brother, Ray.  Thank you, Toni Mauch.

Prayer Request from Jim Rahn

My uncle August Earl Rahn was taken to the hospital yesterday because his chronic COPD had become severe. They have placed him into an induced coma as part of the treatment. He has basic Christian beliefs and confirmed in the Lutheran church but, has not been active in any church. I am asking that we lift him to the Lord in prayer for both his body and spirit. As always, we will accept the what ever God will bless us with.

DEVOTION:  Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to them belongs the kingdom of God.  Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child shall not enter it."

Our children are very precious to us, aren't they?  We are so very aware of their physical needs that we will have whole cabinets full of medicine to ease their every pain and illness, and to put the bandaid on that ouchy.  We will take them to the dentist and make sure they brush their teeth.  We make sure they always have plenty to eat and that they eat what is good for them.

We surely don't say things like "Oh, I'll take care of that broken arm next time, it's not that big of a deal."  We don't say things like, "I let my kids make their own decision as to whether or not they brush their teeth."

Yet, when it comes to their spiritual health and their faith, parents too often do just that.  I've heard many parents say things like, "I'll let my kids make their own decision whether they go to Sunday school or not."  Or, "If my kid doesn't want to go to Sunday school I'm not going to make them."

Most kids don't like to brush their teeth, so If you said the same thing about their teeth what would happen to their teeth?

Parents, you are responsible for the Spiritual life of your children!!  Are you taking it as seriously as their physical health?  Are you spending as much time, energy, and money on their spiritual health as you do on making sure they are growing well in their mind and body?

There is still time and there is the perfect opportunity for you to do just that!!  On the next three Wednesdays we will be having gatherings at church at 7pm to talk about a DCE (Director of Christian Education) and what a DCE would be able to do for St. John's Lutheran Church.  We will talk about the importance of Youth and Children's Ministry and the impact it can make on the whole congregation!  I urge you to make every effort to attend one of these meetings on July 17, 24, or 31 at 7pm!!!

Let us pray:  Lord God motivate us to care for the Spiritual needs of our children as much and even more than we do their physical and emotional needs.  Don't let us let our kids be content with full bellies and empty souls.  Amen.
