DEVOTION:   "Clothe yourselves, all of you,  with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you."  1 Peter 5:5b-6

Yesterday Jason Collins, an NBA player with the Washington Wizards, "came out" as being gay.  He is the first pro athlete to "come out" in any sport while still an active player.

Many have come out in favor of what Jason Collins said and did including the president.   Many are proud of him for doing so.  He is also very proud of himself.

Chris Brousard, a sports writer for ESPN, "came out" on the other side, the Biblical side, saying that homosexuality along with all other sexual sins, are outside of God's will.  He called homosexuality sin.  For that he is being ridiculed, yelled at, and called a bigot.

Here's the trouble.  We want to be thought of as good and right.  We want people to accept our lifestyles and to applaud us for what we do.  We want to be proud of ourselves.  We need it even to the point of denying and even despising the truth.  Our need for self esteem and our pride in ourselves causes us to seek and even to demand acceptance of our thoughts, words and deeds, which is just the opposite of what God wants.  He wants us to humble ourselves. He wants us to realize our failures and sins and submit to His will.  He wants us to put ourselves under His authority.

Homosexuality is sinful just like all sex that is outside the parameters of what God intended, which is one man and one woman who are committed in marriage to each other until death.  This is true whether you like it and agree with it or not.

The encouragement in the verse above come from God today.    If you humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, He will, at the proper time, exalt you.  He gives you His grace.

Don't be proud of yourself, because that pride will be your downfall.  Instead be proud of what Christ can do, is doing, and will do through and in you.  Be proud of His mercy and grace in your life.  Be proud of the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives through you.  Be proud of HIM!

Let us pray:  Lord God help me to be humble and to keep from foolish pride.  Help me instead ot be proud of you and to show that righteous pride in my life, in what I think, say, and do.  Amen.

DEVOTION: "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.  You have set your glory in the heavens.  From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise."  Psalm 8:1-2

Yesterday we had our eighth grade confirmation celebration!  Part of that was that the kids had to read essays that were written.  All I can say is that I was greatly impressed and amazed by these wonderful 14 year olds!  They are great kids who believe in Jesus and love Him as their Lord and Savior and it shown brightly yesterday!  What great examples of Christianity they are for ALL of us!

A lot of the time our culture gets down on young people.  We tend to lump all teenagers into the "bad" category.  With these kids, that couldn't be further from the truth.  I'm very proud of them.  You should be too!

Don't get me wrong, they are normal kids who get in trouble from time to time and give their parents headaches and heartburn on an almost daily basis, but they are also CHRISTIAN kids who believe in the love and forgiveness of Christ and live out that Christian faith in many ways throughout their lives.  It is that love and forgiveness that is going to take them far in this world and carry them all the way to eternal life.

I would say that we need to support our youth in their faith throughout their growing up years, but I think they are going to do a lot of supporting of the faith life of this church themselves for many years to come.   These eighth graders along with all of our kids are going to be great Christian leaders for the rest of their lives if they hold on to Christ!  Look for them all to be doing great things for many years to come!

Let us pray.  Lord God we thank you for our young people and the examples of faith you have made them to be.  Continue to work in and through them to bring about your glory, honor, and peace.

THURSDAY'S QUIZ: What is a "Song of Ascent" in the Psalms?  Ascents --A prayer for deliverance from false accusers.   Some have thought the Hebrew for this word refers to stairs leading to the temple , hence a Song of The Stairs to be used in Temple liturgy .  Most believe it refers to the annual religious pilgrimages  to Jerusalem.   (Wonderful job Pam)

UPDATE THURSDAY, 4/25/13 AT 12:40 PM FOR THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER BREAKFAST

Thanks to Don & Wanda Turnure for the final food item for our prayer breakfast!!

You all are awesome "givers"!!!

******There IS one more way you could help with the prayer breakfast.  The paper products (tablecloths/napkins/cups/plates) cost about $35.  If you would want to give individual donations of $1 - $5 - or whatever, to offset that expense for the church,  that would be great too.

GREETINGS ALL YOU St. John's C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry go-getters!!!!!!!!!!

On Thursday, May 2, 2013 we are hosting a National Day of Prayer observance like we did the past 3 years.  We are serving a continental breakfast in the church overflow area from 6:30 AM - 7:00 AM.

At 7:00 AM Pastor Klaustermeier will begin a prayer and devotion time in our sanctuary with music by Barb Dreyer.

You all have another opportunity to help out by donating the items for the breakfast.  We did have a pretty good turnout last year; but we never really know how many to expect.  I believe the following list should be plenty to serve the folks who come that morning.  Hopefully, some of our Little Lambs and their parents will be able to attend before school begins.

Please have your donated items to church

ON Wed. May 1, 2013 for maximum freshness

(Refrigerated items can be put in the refrigerators in the church kitchen - the others on the island in the church kitchen)

Items should be plainly marked

"FOR NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER BREAKFAST"

So as not to get mixed with Ladies Aid Luncheon, Craft & Bake Sale Items

IMPORTANT:  Please respond by emailing Sandy Robine at snsrobine@centurytel.net

IMPORTANT:  Please respond by emailing Sandy Robine at snsrobine@centurytel.net

and let her know what item you will donate and how much of that item or if you have any questions!

DEVOTION:  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20

No matter what you might think, this devotion is not about two teenagers.

The first teenager is Anne Frank. As most of you know, she was a Jewish girl who spent two years hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. Eventually, she and her family were found, arrested and, with the exception of her father, died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. It was only after her father returned to their hiding place that he found his daughter's diary. The book has touched millions and today, Anne Frank's hiding place has become a museum.

The second teenager's life is, in many ways, the opposite of Anne Frank's. This teenage boy is 19-year-old rock star and heartthrob Justin Bieber. Unlike Frank whose life was hidden, everything Bieber does is reported, discussed, analyzed and paraded before his fans and the public,

including his recent visit to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam;

including what he wrote in the museum's guest book.

At the end of his time at the museum, Bieber penned the idea that he hoped if Anne Frank had been alive she "would have been a Belieber." No, that's not a misspelling on my part. Bieber's fans are called Beliebers."

But this devotion is not about two teenagers. It's about how people have responded to what Justin Bieber wrote at the museum.

Some people were slightly upset with the young man, while others were outraged, scandalized, horrified, disgusted, disappointed, dismayed and appalled. The common thinking was what an ego! How dare he think of himself at such a time and place?

That's the way most people felt -- most -- but not everybody.

A spokeswoman for the museum, a Ms. Mostart, defended Mr. Bieber. She told the BBC, "He's 19. It's a crazy life he's living. He didn't mean bad ... and also it's nice that he made the effort, he didn't have to come."

I don't know if Ms. Mostart is a Christian, but she sure was following James' advice about being quick to hear and slow to speak out in anger. As Luther said, she had put the "best construction on everything."

Over the years I've found that some sins are easier to deal with than others. For me (and for many), saying things about others in the kindest way does not come easily. Without waiting to investigate the facts, without giving the benefit of the doubt, without ever bothering to consider if I have anything positive to say, my tongue gets engaged, and I start spewing out seemingly endless streams of critical commentary.

That is hardly the kind of thing that benefits my neighbor or gives glory to my Redeemer.

This is why I would encourage you -- you who probably no longer are a teenager -- to use your tongue to honor the Redeemer on Monday through Saturday as wonderfully well as you do on Sunday. I know I'll try too.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, through the week may the words of my mouth and the mediation of my heart be acceptable to You. In Jesus I ask it. Amen.

Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training

Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!

Pray for these guys.  Some of these guys are in harm's way right now, others are training to put themselves in harm's way.  All of them have volunteered to serve and protect their country (which is you).
