DEVOTION:  Now, brothers, I wanted to remind you of the Gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.  By this Gospel you are saved, if you hold firmily to the word I preached to you.  Otherwise you have believed in vain.  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,. that he was buried, that he was  was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter and then to the twelve.  After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.  Then he appeared to James, ten to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one untimely born. 1 Corinthians 5:1-9

Is Jesus' life, death, and resurrection just a made up story?  Well, let me ask you this, if you had over 500 witnesses to something wouldn't you deem it to be true?  Would you stop questioning it?  I imagine you would believe it wholeheartedly.

The resurrection is a fact jack!!  It is proven by eyewitness testimony after eyewitness testimony.  And these eyewitnesses were not all people who were sympathetic to the cause.  Paul (Saul as he was known before his conversion) was a persecutor of Christians.  He hated the people of "The Way", until Christ appeared to him, then he couldn't deny it or doubt it any longer.

There is no need for you to walk around as a Christian with doubts in your heart or mind.  You don't have to succumb to the pressure and the doubters and haters out there who want to put down your Christianity as some kind of fantasy or myth.  Have confidence in your faith!  have confidence on your Christ!  Have confidence in your salvation!  Stop being a mealy mouth Christian and stand up for your faith!  Share it! Live it!  Believe it!

Prayer:  Lord God, I believe, help my unbelief!  Make me a strong and confident Christian for you!  Amen

DEVOTION: For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. Philippians 1:21-23

This past week I was bothered when I read the remarkable story of Tyler Campbell.

If you missed it, let me briefly share. Nineteen-year-old Campbell was at church with his family when he left to go to a friend's home. He promised he would be home by midnight. That deadline came and went, but the family wasn't worried. It was only the next day that their concern began to increase.

A call to Campbell's friend and a drive on the route the lad would have taken home led the family to conclude the teenager was missing. The police were informed and hundreds of people volunteered their time in a search for the young man.

Three days after he went missing, with a broken shoulder and a broken leg, Campbell managed to crawl out of a 30-foot ravine where his truck had crashed. Overjoyed, his father said, "I don't believe in luck. It was the Lord. It was 100 percent in His plan, and His will, and His way."

Now I am, like the Campbells, thankful that Tyler is alive. Even so, I am still concerned about the father's statement. I am concerned because I'm not sure Campbell's dad would have said the same thing if his boy had been killed in that accident.

The truth is and Saint Paul said it, "to live is Christ and to die is gain." To the church at Rome, the apostle wrote: "So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be the Lord both of the dead and of the living" (Romans 14:8-9).

Saint Paul knew that our loving Father will always do what is right and best for His people. In life or in death God will always do what is right and best.

Now it's true we sinful humans with limited understanding may not always be able to understand why someone is in an accident or why a loved one may be taken from us. At such times we may not comprehend, but a Holy Spirit-given faith can still motivate us to say, as our Savior once said, "Not My will, but Thine be done" (Luke 22:42b).

As children of faith, we can and ought to echo the Redeemer, who knew the good that would come from Him drinking His "cup of suffering" would outweigh the pain and suffering, which were soon to come. Showing an unshakable faith, Jesus trusted His Heavenly Father.

We should do no less. As Jesus told His people, "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" (Matthew 7:11).

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me faith to know that while Your ways are not my ways, and Your thoughts are not mine, You will always do what is right and best for Your children of faith. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

There is only one church-- all believers in Christ.  The visible gathering is called church because of the believers gathered around the means of grace in an assembly in which there are also hypocrites.

Please let me know if you are at all interested and I will get you more information.

In the meantime you can go to LHM.org and check out more info about this wonderful ministry of the church.

DEVOTION:  (from Pastor)
For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith.  I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.   1 Thessalonians 3:4-5

How concerned are you about the faith of others?  Are you worried about it?  I can tell you, with all honesty, that I am often concerned about many of you and how your faith is going.  That is why, especially when I haven't seen you for a while, one of the first questions I ask is whether or not you have been to worship.   That is why, when you are living away from Warrenton, I am constantly trying to get you to join or at least attend a church where you are.

Your faith is of utmost importance to me.  As you are a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, your faith has been entrusted to my care by God and by you or your parents.  I have the wonderful responsibility and sometimes burden to care about you and your faith.

In the same way, each of you has people entrusted to you as well.  It starts with your children.  God has entrusted the faith of your children to you.  Are you doing everything you can to make sure your children are growing up in and learning the faith?  Are you setting an example for them in speech, life, love, and purity?  Are you loving them with Christ's love?

I want to encourage you to regain a perspective that is not necessarily worried about the faith of others, but one that is concerned and thinking about it, and one that will do whatever it takes to help that faith grow.  Make every effort to bind others to Christ!

Prayer: Lord God, help us to be concerned about the faith lives of others enough so that we do what we can about it.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  (from Pastor)
And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are." Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
(Acts 15:36-41 ESV)

I love this passage because it shows the humanness of those who wrote the Scriptures, and those who were the first missionaries.  Often times we think of the disciples and the Bible writers as holier than we are, but they weren't.  They even had disagreements.  It just goes to show that even well meaning Christians have disagreements.  Even Christians don't agree on everything.  Imagine that.

I can only imagine what life would be like if my wife agreed with me on everything.  If she did we'd be in trouble, because I am not always right.  (There I said it, but don't tell her.)

We also see that God works through our disagreements.  Notice what happened in this passage.  The work was doubled.  Barnabas went one way and shared the Gospel along with Mark.  Paul went another way and shared the Gospel along with Silas. More people heard the Gospel.

Sometimes we aren't going to get a clear answer about a specific decision that we have to make.  We may not know the exact right way to go about doing something.  But we can always trust that God is going to do His will no matter what the decision.

This is not a license to be disagreeable, no one likes someone who is always questioning everything that is done and is always disagreeing just to disagree.  It is a lesson in God's patience in dealing with us and in how He works all things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Prayer:  Lord God help me to stick to my guns when I need to, to compromise when it is according to Your will, the wisdom to know the difference, and the strength to know that You are going to work it all out for my good.

FW: Tuesday, November 20, 2012 (revised)

DEVOTION:  (from Pastor)
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- which is really no gospel at all.  Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.  But even if we or angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one who preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!  As we have already said, so now I say again: if anybody preaches to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned.  Galatians 1:6-9

I am so thankful I have this congregation to preach to and to care for as a shepherd for Christ.  I am eternally grateful that I am able to bring the Gospel to so many in both the Word and the Sacraments!  I am so thankful that I have this body of believers who is sticking to the truth.  I am so thankful that I was born into the church body I was, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

Sometimes we seem like stick in the muds.  Sometimes we may seem a bit too old fashioned and not quite with the times.  We may not seem as flashy or as fancy or as popular as the rest, but we are most definitely in the truth!  One thing is for certain, the GOSPEL is never in question at or in our church!

How important is it to stick with the truth no matter what the cost?  Read the passage above again.   Does "Let him be eternally condemned" sound very serious to you?

It is good to be a welcoming church.  It is important to be a loving church!  It is important that we reach out to the community with the Gospel.  It is important that we are loving everyone around us.  But not just for loves sake.  For the GOSPEL'S SAKE.  For the eternal salvation of souls!  Let us never be ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of salvation for all who believe!

When we don't take the Word of God and the Gospel seriously, and when we water it down or make it less important than it should be we risk losing our very identity.  We risk losing our own Christianity.  We risk losing our lives for all eternity.

In all of the ways that we are making the church modern with websites, a casual worship service, Facebook pages, and so much more,  we must never lose sight of the good, old fashioned, 2,000 year old GOSPEL!  It is what makes the eternal difference in the lives of people.  It must always remain about the Gospel!!!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to remain true to the Gospel no matter what the cost, that in the end You may find me faithful and so that, through my own proclaiming of the real good news many might be saved.  Amen.

TUESDAY'S QUIZ: Who was the first person to "preach" at Pentecost?  Peter  Acts 2:14-26p

CATECHISM:
Question:  Where is the holy Christian church to be found?
Answer:
It is to be found where "the Gospel is preached in its purity and the holy sacraments are administered according to the Gospel.  The Gospel and the Sacraments are called the marks of the church.
