DEVOTiON:  (from Pastor)
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and fille dthe whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were fill with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.  Acts 2:1-4

I've always been fascinated at the immediate change that happened to the disciples that day.  Before the Holy SPirit came upon them they were hiding on an upper room.  They were scared to death of someone finding them and putting them in jail or worse, killing them.  After the Holy SPirit came upon them they went out and spoke freely in other languages and as all the people heard it they gathered around them.  Then Peter started to speak loudly enough for everyone, even their future persecutors, to hear.   They no longer cared what anyone thought of them.  They no longer cared whether they would be put in jail.  They no longer cared whether or not they would be killed. In fact, all of them but John were killed for their faith.

Has the Holy Spirit had that same effect on you?  Do you care who knows whether or not you go to church, whether or not you pray, whether or not you want them to be saved?

Are you afraid to express your Christianity?  Or an even bigger question, does it really matter to you at all?  If Christianity were to become illegal and it was illegal to go to church or to express your faith in any way, would you miss it?  Would it be a big deal to you?

I am sorry to say that for many Christians, even some who are members of St. John's, it wouldn't really matter.  Does it matter to you?  Then show it in your words and actions!!  Show up to Thanksgiving worship tomorrow night or Thursday morning.  Show up on Sunday morning!  Get involved in your church!  Start sharing your faith as you should, because it is a precious thing that many, including the disciples in our lesson for today and thousands of other, have fought and died for and are still fighting and dying for today!

If there is something keeping you from worship, from sharing your faith, from being a Christian either deal with it or get over it!  The time is short dear brothers and sisters.  Christ is coming!!  It is time to get ready yourself and to get others ready as well!

Prayer:  Lord God help me to quit being a scaredy cat or a complacent Christian.  Help me to get active in my faith so that others may see it and so that I may grow in it as well.  Amen.

DEVOTiON:  (from Pastor)
"Don't be alarmed", he (the angel) said "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.  He has risen!  He is not here."   Mark 16:6

To be honest, the resurrection wasn't even on my radar today.  I am gettng ready for Thanksgiving, recuperating from a busy and tough week last week, and looking forward to the tons of things I have planned for this week.

Then, this reading shows up in my daily Bible reading, and I am reminded of what is most important and why I do what I do.  CHRIST IS RISEN!!!  He is risen indeed!  Alleluia!!

Even in the middle of our seemingly endless list of stuff to do, even in the busyness of life, and even when we aren't thinking anything about it, Christ is still risen!  As a popular new song puts it.  "Our God is not dead.  He's surely alive!"

How often do we let those words and that truth slip away from us?  How much do we let the devil get a hold of our truth, and twist and turn it into something it isn't?

If you have nothing else for which to be thankful, which is not the case, but if there is nothing else good in your life, there is still the resurrection!  Because Christ has been raised, you shall rise too!  Or as Job put it, "I know that my Redeemer lives and in the end, after my skin has been destroyed, yet, in my flesh I shall see God.  I , myself will see Him with my own eyes, I, and not another.  How my heart yearns within me!

Go in peace today knowing that your Savior, Jesus, has risen and that, as the Gospel reading for yesterday says, "He who endures to the end will be saved".

Prayer:  Lord God, bless us with daily reminders of your Son's resurrection, so that we may be filled with joy daily as well!  Amen.

MONDAY'S QUIZ:  What was the first thing that Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene) said to Peter after the angel told her that Christ had risen?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
CATECHISM:
Question:  Why do you say "I believe" in the holy Christian church?
Answer:
a. Because faith, which makes people members of the church, is invisible, the church is invisible to human eyes.
b. The Scriptures assure us that the Holy SPirit continues to gather and preserve the church.

DEVOTION:  (from pastor)
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. (1 Timothy 2:1-6a ESV)

SOme of you reading this today are glad about the elections last night.  Others of you are sad for the same reasons.

Whether you are sad or glad, remember that the Lord has commanded you to honor and respect all who are in authority.  For there is no authority on earth that God has not allowed.

In our passage above we see what seems to be reasonable direction from Paul to Timothy.  The circumstances were less than ideal to make it happen.  You see, the government that Paul lived under was oppresive to Christianity and to him specifically.  He had been imprisoned, beaten, and left for dead several times by the very government that he was now telling Timothy to pray for.

What does this teach us?  It teaches us that it is God's will that is good!  It teaches us that we should pray for all in authority that, if they are against us, their hearts would be turned.  If they are for us, that it owuld remain so.  If there is struggle or disagreement, it would cease.  And that, in all things, God's will would be done in and through our leaders and those in authority.

Ultimately, we live in a country where we are still free to worship when, where, and how we want.  We have a president who is a Christian.  He proclaims Jesus as Lord and Savior.  We have freedom to proclaim Jesus as Lord without fear of persecution or imprisonment.  Praise and thanks be to God for His mercy and grace in this!

Certainly we have some struggles to overcome and work through.  That is where prayer, perseverance, and holding strictly to God's Word and truth comes in.  Where our government is according to God's Word we obey it.  Where it is against it we work to correct it and bring about change.  We keep fighting the good fight of faith, because we are Christians and we know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain!  We keep fighting for what is right according to God's will, so that in the end the Lord will say to us  "Well done good and faithful servant, welcome to the place prepared for you in heaven!"

Prayer: Lord God, help me to not get discouraged at election results, because my jy doesn't lie in circumstances, but in you.  At the same time, help me not put my hope in governments or in mortal men who cannot save.  Help me to put my trust solely in you!  You are the only one who brings real change in the hearts and lives of people!  Praise, glory, and honor to you alone, O Savior!  Amen.

TUESDAY'S QUIZ: What did Jesus say to the disciples after they exclaimed "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."  I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven.  I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.  However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministry)
Jesus said) "You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world." John 16:20-21

Thirty-one-year-old Bronx native Ninfa Ramirez was having a baby.

She wasn't having a baby soon; her contractions said she was having her baby now. This explains why Armando Ortiz, the child's father, rushed Ramirez to the hospital. There, after an examination, the parents were told to go home. The experts didn't know exactly how long it would be, but they were sure it would be some time before their baby would arrive.

Having heard the experts, Ramirez and Ortiz went home.

Ortiz dropped Ramirez off at the apartment and went to do some errands. Before he had gone far he got a phone call ... from Ramirez. She said the experts had been wrong. The baby was on its way.

Ramirez was right; the experts were wrong. She, assisted by Ortiz, gave birth to a nine-and-a-half-pound baby girl in their apartment's elevator. And although the apartment complex is clean and nice, the elevator's sanitation level is far short of a hospital delivery room.

In such circumstances, many people would be angry with the experts. They might be furious and threaten to bring a malpractice suit against everyone involved.

That is not the way this couple feels. They say the elevator delivery was "a beautiful experience," and Ortiz adds he doesn't mind that the experts sent them home; he's just proud to be a dad.

All of this proves Jesus was right when He said in effect that the good news of a healthy baby pushes out many of the memories and pains that accompanied the child's delivery.

The truth Jesus was trying to share ought to be important to us.

You see, we live in a world filled with sin, sorrow and sickness. As Christians, we are not immune to those problems. Indeed, precisely because we are Christians we may attract a disproportionate number of difficulties and discouragements.

Does that sound familiar?

If it does, then listen to the Savior as He promises there will come a time when the horrors of this world will be a thing of the past. By God's grace and the Savior's blood, after Judgment Day, those who have been given faith and forgiveness will no longer remember this world's anguish.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord grant me eyes of faith, so I may look past the pains of this world and cling to the vision of our wonderful future in heaven -- a future made possible through the life, death and resurrection of our beloved Redeemer. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  (from Pastor)
Each one should give as he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.  II Corinthians 9:7-8

Yesterday I talked about giving in terms of where your heart is.  Here's the deal.  We all know that there are a lot of people who are struggling to make ends meet.  We all have financial difficulties we are going through.  Here's the questions you should ask yourself.

1.  Do you wish you could give more?  By this I mean, do you know that your offering is going to the sharing of the Gospel and the increase of God's kingdom, and do you want to participate in that increase and that sharing of the Gospel?

2. Does your budget and your giving reflect the heart of God?  By this I mean, are there things you spend money on that neither glorify God or are according to His will that you could instead be giving to him?

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.   Where is your heart?   These are tough questions to ask, but ones that are necessary to get everything straight and be the best witness to God's mercy and grace that you can be.

You all know the needs of the church!  There are two main things we are working on, as far as inceasing the church's and God's influence in the congregation itself and the community at large.

One is the building program.  It isn't something that we have talked about for a while, yet it is something that would greatly benefit our own membership as well as the community in hundreds of different ways.  Can you give to that?  Can you give more to that if you are already giving to it?

The other is what was voted on on October 15.  We voted to call a DCE (director of Christian education) and music ministry.  THis is a person who will help me out greatly, but will also increase the ministry scope throughout our own congregation and throughout the community!  He/she will be mostly responsible for youth and music ministry.  Just imaigne the opportunities and enhancements that will come about when we are able to get this person on board.  The key to this is that we can only get this person on board when we have  a solid plan in place to be able to afford it.  We have a team in place to begin working on it this week, but it will take the effort and sacrifice of every member of our church!!!

I want to encourage you to pray hard about this in the coming days, weeks, and months ahead.  Pray that God directs you to do everything that you can to be His hands, feet, mouth, and heart to do His will in these matters, so that His will is done!

Prayer:  Lord God help me to be an integral part in your mission, dong all that I can to be your hands, feet, and mouth as you increase your kingdom through me.  Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question:  Then, why are not all people saved?
Answer:  Many reject the Word and resist the Holy Spirit; therefore they remain in unbelief and under God's judgment by their own fault.
