DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. James 2:10

Jeffrey McMullen is a regular patron of AmeriServ Bank in Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania.

That's why, when McMullen handed two of the bank's tellers a note that said he was robbing the bank and wanted them to fork over $1, they thought he was pulling their legs.

Not to be put off by the tellers' unbelief, McMullen left them and approached an employee who was working with new accounts. Once again he said he was holding up the bank, and he wanted them to cough up one single, solitary dollar.

Finally, there was nothing more to be done. The police were called and McMullen was arrested.

Although McMullen's case was interesting now it became bizarre, as it became clear he had held up the bank because he wanted to be tried in a federal court. Apparently, it was his hope he might be sentenced to the minimum security prison in Loretto, Pennsylvania. As of this writing, nobody is sure why McMullen wanted to go to Loretto.

One thing we are sure of is this: the judge didn't take McMullen's bank heist lightly. First, he must take a mental evaluation, and if he wishes to be free before his trial, he has to post a $50,000 bail.

While the story's finish may not be written for some time, I think we are seeing the words of James come true: "For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point is accountable for all of it." McMullen may have been a nice bank robber; he may have been a polite, non-threatening bank robber; but he is still a bank robber. And, barring unknown and extenuating circumstances, he may be tried and sentenced like a bank robber.

This, of course, is a lesson for us all. We may be nice sinners -- caring, compassionate and kind sinners -- but we are still sinners. We may only commit little, almost microscopic sins, but we still are sinners. We may have the best of intentions when we sin, but we are still sinners.

And the wages of sin is death. That's what Scripture says. Elsewhere it rephrases the idea when it says the soul which sins shall die. For sinners like you and me there is no psychiatric evaluation, there is no bail. The sentence must be eternal death and damnation.

At least the sentence should have been death and damnation. You see, for believers there are extenuating circumstances, no, not in the commission of the crime; of that, we are guilty. The extenuating circumstance is the crime has already been paid for, and the sentence has been served.

God's Son Jesus Christ came into this world to offer Himself as the Person who would carry our sins and defeat death. Because of what He has done, when the day comes that we appear before the Judge, He will tell us that since Jesus has paid for our sins, we are free to go to our eternal home in heaven.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that Jesus' blood-bought salvation has been given to me and cancels out my sin and its penalty. May those who think they are okay doing little, minor transgressions see clearly that to be guilty of the law in one part is to break it in all parts. Bring them to repentance and salvation, which comes from Jesus. In His Name. Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question:  What do the Scriptures teach about the gift of the Holy Spirit?
Answer: The Scriptures teach that the Holy SPirit gives gifts to His church.  They teach that

a. the Holy Spirit through the Word and sacraments freely gives to all Christians the most precious gifts: faith in Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life;
b. in apostolic times the Holy Spirit also gave some Christians the gift to perform miraculous signs and wonders (for example, healings, speaking in tongues, raising the dead).

The Scriptures do not teach, however, that God will necessarily give all Christians in every time and place special miraculous gifts.  The Holy SPirit besotws His blessings according to His good pleasure.

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are.

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

Let's see, first there was Munchausen syndrome, and now there is Munchausen by Internet (MBI).

So, have I left you in the dark? It's quite possible unless you are well-acquainted with disorders of the mind and personality. If you are in that category, that is, the unacquainted, let me explain.

Munchausen syndrome takes place when a physically healthy individual pretends to be sick, so he or she can glean attention from other people. Although there is nothing bodily wrong with such a person, they may still end up visiting a whole array of physicians and put in regular appearances at numerous hospitals.

This takes us to Munchausen by Internet. The Internet has transformed an old illness, which called for personal communication, and made it possible for a person with this syndrome to speak to hundreds and thousands of people at a time. It has allowed claims that once could have been checked out and made them virtually unverifiable for many recipients who receive an e-mail telling the story of someone who is supposedly sick. The end result is many people are making emotional and sometimes financial investments in the sad situation of someone whose situation isn't sad at all.

Dr. Marc Feldman, psychiatry professor at the University of Alabama, says he receives one or two such tragic stories every week. He is certain there are many, many more examples that go unreported. He is equally positive such cases are becoming more common.

So what does this have to do with a Daily Devotion? Simple. When it comes to salvation, there are a great many people who have Munchausen-syndrome-in-reverse. Rather than being healthy people who claim they are sick, these folks are sick with sin and claim to be perfectly healthy.

Scripture is clear: we are all sinners and worthy of condemnation. The apostle John adds: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." You see, John's talking about folks who are dying of sin but who still claim they are perfectly fit and fine.

Truth is they are not fit and fine. Left to their own devices and strength, their condition is terminal. This is why they need to recognize their illness and confess, "Lord, be merciful to me a sinner."

Thankfully, in His grace, the Lord has provided a Savior in the person of His Son. Through His life, His death, and His glorious resurrection, Jesus has offered Himself as the sacrifice necessary to win our forgiveness and grant spiritual health to our souls.

In Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit's guidance, John assures us, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." In short, the souls who were sick with sin are made healthy and whole.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that You sent Your Son to save us from sin, death and Satan. Now I ask that You will use me to reach out to those sick souls who think they are healthy and don't need a Physician for their souls. This I ask in my Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"  Matthew 4:4

I've often wondered, what is the harm of falling into temptation from time to time?  As long as you're not hurting anyone else what does it matter?  It's all in good fun, isn't it?

What was the harm in jesus actually doing what the devil told him to do?  Why not turnt he stone into bread?  It would've have provided the food he desparately needed.  It would have shown the devil what kind of power he had.  It wasn't going ot hurt anyone.

Yet it would have.  It would have hur the whole human race, because it would have disqualified Jesus as Savior of the world.  He would have given into Satan.  In this one small act of defying Satan, Jesus showed us that He would rather starve than give into Satan. he showed us His power over Satan through His Word.  Through His rejection of Satan's wiles He kicked Satan in the teeth and conquered him for us.

He also gave us an example to follow.  Instead of giving in and thinking only of himself, He went without food so that we wouldn't go without heaven.  He showed us how to resist temtptation through God's Word.  He showed us how to give of ourselves for the good of the world.  He showed us that man really doesn't live on bread alone, but wil live forever on every Word that flows from God's mouth.

I urge you to think about this when it comes to what God has given to you.  The temptation is to keep it all for yourself.  The temptation is to say, "It's not going to hurt anyone if I keep this."  Or, " I don't need to give.  I need to be given to."   Realize that you don't live on food or money alone.  The only reason you are alive today is because of every Word that flows from the mouth of the Lord.

Prayer:  Lord God, "Help me to realize more and moe every day that I live and move and have my being only because You allow it and make it happen, and let my life express that in how I give back to you what you have first given to me.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  From Lutheran Hour Ministry

(Jesus said) "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'" Matthew 25:41

Toward the end of September, I had the opportunity to speak at the LCMS Training and Equipping Conference for Prison and Jail Ministry.

While there I met many fascinating individuals and congregational representatives, who are doing great hands-on ministry for the 2.4 million prisoners in the U.S. It was interesting listening to these pioneers of prison ministry talk about maximum-security prisons, minimum-security facilities, and all kinds of prisons with all kinds of protection and precaution levels between these two.

Now, if I were given my druthers, I would prefer to stay out of all prisons, at least as a resident.

On the other hand, if I were going to be incarcerated, I think I'd like to be locked away at the only jail in American Samoa: the Territorial Correctional Facility. From recent news articles, that jail seems to have some perks that even America's minimum security jails lack.

Curious as to what they might be? I hope so, because I'm about to explain.

It appears the jailers, at least two of them, allowed the inmates out of prison to go buy beer and food. Apparently, it was a good arrangement: the criminals had their beer, and the guards ended up receiving potato chips and cookies.

The situation might have gone on unnoticed, if it weren't for the fact the prisoners didn't hide their contraband too well, and the jailers weren't very picky as to who they let go shopping. Apparently, the higher-ups took a dim view of letting out a man who is serving time for having attacked another individual with a machete. All of this explains why two of the guards have now become inmates in the Territorial Correctional Facility.

All of this takes me to the text for today's devotion. From what I've been told every prisoner has the hope that someday they will be released. Even though the judge has said they have "no possibility of parole," criminals still think some kind of weird circumstance or situation will give them their freedom.

Our text reminds us there is a prison from which there are no great escapes; there is no appeal; there are no retrials, and no clemency is ever accorded to those who are there. The Lord Jesus Himself refers to this prison as the place of "the eternal fire."

Thankfully, it is a prison to which no person need ever be sentenced.

Knowing the pain and suffering that awaits unsaved souls, the Lord sent His Son into this world to offer Himself as the ransom -- the payment -- which would offer clemency and forgiveness to all who were brought to faith in the Christ. To accomplish this job, which would grant forgiveness to a condemned world, Jesus lived a life of perfection and carried the sins we have committed. Then, when everything necessary to win our salvation had been accomplished, He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross and die the death that should have been ours.

Isaiah 53:5 summed up Jesus' sacrifice by saying, "He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for giving Yourself to win my salvation, You have my eternal gratitude. By Your suffering and death I have been given complete freedom, forgiveness and salvation. May my life express my gratitude. In Your Name. Amen.
