DEVOTION:
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is sacred to the Lord your God.  Do not mourn or weep."  For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the law.  Nehemiah 8:9-10

One of the greatest stories that often goes untold is the story of the Israelites returning to Jerusalem and the reading of the law before the people.   It is very interesting to see the reaction of the people to the hearing of the law.  They wept.  They sat in sackcloth and ashes.  They mourned over their sin.  They were horrified at how they had negelcted God and worshipped idols instead.  They were ashamed of themselves as they heard what the Lord's will was for their lives and realized that they had not even begun to accomplish it.  They were guilty and they knew it.

You can run away from your problems all you want.  You can deny your guilt from sun up to sun down.  You can fill your lives with stuff and never feel a sense of peace, because your sin hasn't been dealt with.  You haven't confessed and turned from it and so the sickness is still there.  You can mask the symptoms for a while, but eventually your sickness of sin will overtake you.

It is wonderful to be able to confess our sins to God, because we know that when we do we will be relieved of our anguish and guilt.  We know that He has taken our sins to the cross and put them to death there.  They are removed from us as far as the east is from the west.

Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites told the people not to mourn and weep.  They knew that the Lord was being gracious and merciful to them.  They knew that the Lord would provide a Savior from sin.  When you go to church on SUnday (or whenever you go) you may get there with a heavy heart full of sin and disappointment, full of guilt and bitterness.  Don't stay that way!  Confess your sins to God!  Give them to Him!  Don't stay at hthe cross!  Go to the empty tomb!It is empty because He isn't there!  He has risen from the dead!

Rejoice that your sins are forgiven!  Rejoice that they have been dealt with on the cross!  Have peace in your heart and joy in your life!  Christ is risen!  he is risen indeed!  Alleluia!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to quit dwelling ont he past.  help me to live in thepresent and future forgiveness that You have won for me on the cross, so that Imay rejoice with all the rest of the saints.  Amen!

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are.

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

Change to prayer request

On the prayer list in today's email I wrote "Alura Wenzel".  the child's name is actually Alura Winebarger.  Sorry about that.  I had Christian Wenzel and Alura Winebarger on my mind at the same time and just combined the two names.

Blessings on your day everyone!

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. Acts 17:16-17

New Orleans is known as "The Big Easy."

Now it may be true that a musician might find it easy to find an appreciative audience in that city, but easy does not describe the work of an evangelist who wishes to make a nighttime witness on infamous Bourbon Street.

That's because the mayor of New Orleans has approved a ban on religious witnessing on Bourbon Street between sunset and sunrise.

That's right, as of today, you can gather a crowd to sell and speak about almost everything else, but you can't sermonize about Jesus. While no reason for the ban has been given, I can only assume that Satan and sin found the Savior was getting in the way of their Bourbon Street monopoly.

Apparently, the ban is working.

After finding out several people sharing a religious message have been arrested or threatened with arrest, one minister, who has spent 30 years sharing the Savior on Bourbon Street, has decided he will no longer do so. He is not ready to risk a fine or the possibility of spending six months in jail for telling people of the Savior's great love. Understand, this is a pastor who never asked for donations or accosted reluctant observers.

Now I fully realize that a one-street, 12-hour-ban on evangelizing is, in the scheme of things, a small thing. On the other hand, anytime a semi-successful assault is made on both freedom of religion and freedom of speech, it is a dangerous thing that sets a frightening precedent.

It is frightening because such a ban is wrong, and this kind of ban can spread.

Joseph LaRue, legal counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom, says, "Religious speech is just as important, and just as protected by the First Amendment, as speech about any other subject at any time of day. New Orleans cannot make criminals of people simply because they want to talk about their faith."

I agree.

This is why today's prayer asks that the Lord will enable the court system to reverse the illegal law, so the Savior's life, death and resurrection might be shared without let or hindrance.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, we do not ask that Christianity be given preferential treatment, but we don't believe we should be held back more than those who recruit for other faiths. Grant that our faith may enjoy the freedoms which are ours in Jesus Christ. In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  I was cupbearer for the king.  In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him,  I took the wine and gave it to the king.  Nehemiah 1:11b-12

A cupbearer doesn't sound like a very important position does it?  The cupbearer was the one who actually kept track of the king's cup, filled it up with wine or whatever, and gave it to the king at meals.

Sounds like a pretty easy and cushy job until you realize what it meant.  It meant you held the king's life in your hand, and if someone got to that cup to poison the king, you woul dbe the one responsible.  it would be your life for his life.   Takes on a whole different meaning, doesn't it?

Nehemiah was so trustworthy that the king trusted him with is very life.  This, of course, begs the question, how trustworthy are you?  Can you be trusted with someone else's life?  Does God trust you?

God put Nehemiah in this position of trust so that he could, in the course of time, help his people get back to their homeland after their captivit and rebuild the temple and the holy city of Jerusalem.  Nehemiah had gained such trust from the king that the king was willing to let Nehemiah be in charge of getting the people back.  He was so trustworthy that the king had no suspicions about him at all.

A lot of times we do things and say things to break trust with people.  All of us fail at that at one time or another.  It is a terrible thing when it happens, and the person who believes in God feels horrible when the y do or say somethng to break trust.  We feel miserable, especially when it is someone we are close to and someone we love.

Thanks be to God that He does not break His trust with us.  he is completely trustworthy and in His trustworthiness He has promised that He will always care for us and that His SOn death on the cross and resurrection from the dead is for us.

Nehemiah is a great example and reminder of our God.  Nehemiah held the king's life in his hands.  Our Lord God holds our life in His hands and He could, at any time, take our lives away and give us eternal death instead, but He has mercy and grace and keeps us in His arms for ever!

Be reminded of God's true grace every day through the hearing and reading of His Word, and be a reminder to others, just like Nehemiah was, of who God is to us and how much He loves us and keeps His promises.

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to be trustworthy like Nehemiah so that I may be a reminder of how trsutworthy you truly are, and when I stumble help me to be a reminder in my repentance, humility and forgiveness.  Amen.

G.L. WOODS TO SPEAK TOMORROW NIGHT, OCTOBER 6, at 6:30pm at CHURCH!!
His story is an amazing one of transformation.  IN 2004 he was flying down the dirt track in his dirt bike, when he crashed and flew over his handlbars landing on his neck which instantly pralyzed him from the neck down.  His life changed in an instant.  yet, God did a miracle in him.  Not only did he give him back his lower body so that he was able to walk, but he gave him a vibrant faith and the ability to speak boldly about it.  Come and hear his story!  Go to www.glwoods.com to learn more about his story.  He is a native of Jonesburg.

Memorial Tribute Video: Dolores DeBlaze

Our mom's video tribute — including numerous photos from throughout her life — is now up on the Dolores DeBlaze obituary page located at http://www.stlouiscremation.com/obituary/dolores-irene-deblaze.  You can find it, if you simply cursor down to the bottom of her page.

St. Louis Cremation limited us to 25 photos, but there will be lots more at the Memorial Service with Pastor K. on Saturday.  We hope you will join us then.

Music is generously provided by master musician Barry Gordon who was 'instrumental' (pun intended) in providing mom with a few laughs from his Jewish jokes.

Enjoy!!

DEVOTION: When Haman entered, the king asked him, "What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?"  Now Haman thought to himself, "Who is there that the king wouldrather honor than me?"  Esther 6:6

Kind of comical, don't you think?  But how many of us really think this way?  All we want it approval.  All we want is to be honored.  We think of ourselves as the most important person in our lives most of the time and so when we think of being honored, although we might feign humility, we truly do feel better about ourselves.

Haman was a treacherous, evil man who couldn't stand it when someone else was honored.  His ambition to the throne caused him much jealously, hatred, and even caused him to force the king to decree that all Jews should be killed.

Now, you might not try to enact a decree that all people who stand against you be killed, but you do harbor thoughts that are quite less than God pleasing against those who stand against you and who are in your way of getting what you want in life.

Remember that the stories of people like Haman in the Bible, are ultimately stories about us.  It is a story of humanity that causes us to remember our sins and our need for our a Savior.   Think about how your life, at times, is just like Haman's.  THink about how your ambition often times gets you in trouble.

Then think about how your Lord Jesus loves you in spite of all those times that you act like Haman.  Realize that he works everything together for your good, just like he did for Mordecai and Esther.  In the end you will survive and you will win on account of Christ!

Prayer:  Lord God thank you for giving me the victory in spite of my failure.  Thank you for working it all out on my behalf in Jesus!  Amen.
