3…2…1…Happy 1 Year!

That's right, in exactly one year from today, we plan to be gathered together as the body of Christ in San Antonio, TX for the 2013 National LCMS Youth Gathering. We look forward to the months of planning and preparation that lie ahead.
Here are upcoming key dates to keep in mind:
  • July 15, 2012 – The Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) application process opens on the Gathering website.  YAVs are those aged 19 -25 years old who serve with interactive learning centers, workshop speakers, servant events, mass events, hotel life and other components of Gathering program. They also work alongside Community Life Builders in many capacities. YAV applications will be accepted until 11:59pm on December 31, 2012.

  • August 2012 - Registration Materials including the pre-Gathering DVD and hotel information will be headed to a congregation near you.

  • September 10, 2012 – Online registration opens on the Gathering website.

Be sure to keep checking www.lcmsgathering.com for new Community Life resources that will aid you in the planning process.

We have a special request:

Youth ministry funding needs a boost
As you know, youth ministries play an integral role in shaping and inspiring young minds throughout the country. That's why Thrivent Financial is partnering with us through a Facebook campaign called "Raise the Praise" to create awareness and raise funds for the important work we do.

Here's where you can help
Support the "Raise the Praise" Challenge: If Thrivent Financial reaches 110,000 fans on their Facebook page by July 31, they will donate $10,000 to youth ministries. Become a Facebook fan today!

You can also demonstrate your own generosity by making a personal donation to our ministry.

Make a difference in three easy steps:

  • "Like" Thrivent Financial on Facebook.
  • Share the campaign with family and friends.
  • Make a donation and encourage others to do so as well.
  • Donations through the LCMS option go to support servant events hosted at LCMS District Booths at the 2013 National LCMS Youth Gathering

Christ's peace be with you this summer!

July 9, 7PM, Westfield House, Cambridge, England at Trinity

A  message from Pastor Clow at Trinity, Wellsville.....

Call him at 573-544-8441 if you would like to attend or wouldjust like more info.

Greetings all,

At Trinity Lutheran, outside of Wellsville, MO, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Mumme, tutor at Westfield House in Cambridge England will be speaking about the incredible opportunities that exist for international Lutheranism at this small house of theological study.  He will also outline ways that we can help and support the training of Lutheran pastors who will serve in places like Madagascar and Finland, among others.

The presentation is scheduled for 7PM, July 9th.

Trinity is located on Trinity Church Road.  Here is a link to a map.  http://trinitylutheranwellsville.org/?page_id=4

Please invite your congregations and any others you would think would like to come.  Information about Westfield House follows.

Thank you,
Keith Clow

Westfield House is the seminary for the Ev. Luth. Church of England.  The House is attached to Fitzwilliam College of Cambridge University. Along with hosting students from St. Louis and Ft. Wayne seminaries for a year study abroad program and European Lutheran seminary students, Westfield hosts students from as far away and diverse backgrounds as India and Madagascar.  During the 2011-2012 academic year, staff, faculty and students represented 14 different nationalities!  A brief history from the Westfield House website follows:

Westfield House is the theological college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England (ELCE).

History

The House was built more than a century before its inauguration as a house of theological studies on the 22nd of February, 1962. It is situated at 30 Huntingdon Road, opposite New Hall and Fitzwilliam College, about half a mile from the city centre. Fitzwilliam is the college of the University of Cambridge to which Westfield House is attached.

The situation of Westfield House is fitting, for the first Lutheran studies in England took place in Cambridge. English Reformers such as Robert Barnes, Hugh Latimer, and Thomas Bilney gathered to read and discuss the writings of Martin Luther in the White Horse Inn, not far from the site of Westfield House today.
The programme of theological studies in Cambridge, sponsored by the ELCE, has its roots in the work of the late Dr William Arndt in the 1950s. The formal beginning was brought a step closer by the appointment of Normal Nagel as the first Preceptor in 1958. In 1969 the academic staff at Westfield increased by the addition of a Tutor to allow more teaching within the House itself. In 1998 a second Tutor was added.

Purpose

The primary purpose of Westfield House is to equip students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for the ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and its proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As a centre of theological studies, it also seeks to serve the Lutheran Church, both in this country and overseas, by the promotion of Christian learning at all levels. It provides theological education withim the framework of a confessional Lutheran perspective, and offers resources that further an understanding of that perspective. Besides the academic staff, these resources are principally contained in the small, but carefully assembled library. It is the only significant Lutheran library in the country.

A statement from Synod President Harrison regarding today's Supreme Court Ruling

LCMS President Issues Statement in Response to
U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Health Care Reform Legislation

ST. LOUIS, June 28, 2012—In response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling today to largely let stand the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, issued the following statement:

"In light of today's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), we remain opposed to the controversial birth control mandate, which is one of the requirements included in the law.

"The Court's decision today guarantees that we will continue to bring awareness to the threat to religious liberty represented by the birth control mandate, which requires virtually all health plans, including those of religious organizations, to cover birth control drugs and products that could cause the death of the unborn. We are opposed to the birth control mandate because it runs counter to the biblical truth of the sanctity of human life and creates a conflict of conscience for religious employers and insurers, who face steep penalties for non-compliance based upon their religious convictions.

"We will continue to stand with those who have filed suit in the many religious freedom cases pending against the birth control mandate.  Through education and civic advocacy, we will continue to educate the public about the vital necessity of protecting our First Amendment right to act according to the tenets of our faith.  We remain steadfast in our opposition to the birth control mandate and will continue working to ensure our right to refrain from paying for products and services that conflict with our doctrine about the sanctity of all human life.

"And, regardless of the Court's decision on the health care reform law, we in the LCMS will continue to uphold the sanctity of all human life while we care for the sick and work to restore the health and well-being of people in our communities and around the world."

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Hebrews 13:17

The Lutheran Hour is the oldest Gospel radio broadcast in the world.

When our broadcast first went on the air, many churches were worried people would stay at home and stop coming to church. To everyone's surprise just the opposite took place. The broadcast told people what Lutherans believed, and they decided to find out more about the church.

That's why so many churches had signs which read, "The Church of The Lutheran Hour." (You can still get one of those signs.)

But times change. Apparently, today there are many people who are staying at home on Sundays and watching the gaggle of high-profile televangelists. As you know, these broadcasts feature a charismatic preacher; impressive music; great, smiling crowds; and no obvious congregational fighting. That combination makes these on-air "churches" quite appealing.

This takes me to a question asked recently by The Christian Post. They wondered: can such a broadcast take the place of a local church? If you don't mind, I'd like to answer that question. Ready? Here goes. The answer is ... no.

That's it: no. We can preach to the unbeliever, and we can support the message of a local parish. We can take the Gospel to places where it is banned and forbidden. We can speak to your shut-ins, your sick, your dying, your vacationers, your college kids, and a host of others.

But, neither Reverend Seltz, nor any of his predecessors -- nor anybody else on the radio or television -- can take the place of your local congregation.

We can't baptize your family members. We can't instruct your children. We can't visit you in the hospital. We can't marry you. There's more: we don't know your problems, pains or victories; we don't hear your confession or share the Lord's absolution or His body and blood.

We don't bury you when you die.

Want to hear more? Okay, here's more: listening or watching at home doesn't allow you to strengthen -- or be strengthened by -- your neighbors. It doesn't allow you to support the church in your own neighborhood, and it doesn't allow Holy Spirit-given gifts to be used in a fellowship that needs you -- and you need them. This is why we pray for these local churches and those who don't think those churches are needed.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, be with and bless the words and work of resident pastors and parishes. Grant them the gifts that will touch the local lost with the wonderful salvation of our crucified and risen Savior. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." Romans 12:17-19

Author's Note: Please do not share this devotion with children before having given it an advanced reading. Use your discretion as the topic addressed is adult in nature.

There are times when it is difficult to be a Christian.

One of those times was covered in the news a week or so ago. It seems a Shiner, Texas, family was having a get-together for friends and family. Most people were outside the house while the family's four-year-old daughter and a 47-year-old family acquaintance were inside.

The girl's father ran into the house when he heard his daughter scream. There he found the guest trying to molest his child. The father stopped the molestation by hitting the man. He hit the man hard enough and long enough that the man died.

Looking back on what he did, the father says he feels terrible. It was not his intent to kill. Evaluating the event (as of this writing), the police have not arrested the dad. Although the investigation continues, they have said, "You have a right to defend your daughter."

Every father and mother who has read that story has stopped and asked, "What would I have done in that man's situation?" Christian parents, knowing that God has told us to pray for our enemies and avoid taking vengeance, must add that compelling factor to their consideration.

There are times when it is difficult to be a Christian.

As a father with two daughters, I hope I would have stopped the incident and turned the man over to the authorities. That's what I hope I would have done.

But I am a father, and I have a temper, and I know that sometimes such perverts avoid punishment. I am a father and I know that someone who does such a thing once will often repeat his offense a second time and a third and a ....

You understand. Yes, there are times when it is difficult to be a Christian.

This is also why I need God's help in being a good Christian all the time and not just when it's easy, convenient or when I am in control. Like the Savior, I always need to be about the Father's business.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me the wisdom and faithfulness to follow Your will and not my natural inclinations. This I ask in the Name of Jesus who set His wishes aside, so I might be saved. Amen

DEVOTION:
Pilate went out again and said to them, "See, I am bringing Him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in Him." So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!" When the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him." John 19:4-6

In the above text you hear Pilate's verdict concerning Jesus.

The Roman procurator was quite right when he declared Jesus to be innocent of any wrongdoing. Indeed, Jesus is the only person in the world's history who could make and be worthy of such a claim.

Jesus was innocent, while you and I and everyone else are sinners.

That is a fact which we prefer to cover up rather than admit. Just how far we are willing to go to hide our sins was shown recently by Nikkolaus McCarthy from New York.

State Police claim they first noticed McCarthy when he was riding his motorcycle. He came to their attention because at the time he was doing 166 miles per hour. An officer finally managed to get the cycle's license plate number when McCarthy had to slow down because of traffic.

McCarthy knew the police were on to him, but that didn't stop him from trying to cover his sin. Rather than receiving a summons, the cyclist sped off and achieved a speed in excess of 170 miles per hour.

Just to give you a reference point, a small Cessna airplane cruises at a speed somewhere between 120 and 160 miles per hour.

This all goes to prove, we human beings don't like to admit our sin. Adam and Eve hid from God in the garden; Cain buried Abel's body so his crime of murder might go undetected. All of us have our ways of pretending we're innocent as freshly fallen snow.

But we're not innocent, are we? We all have our sins -- big sins, little sins, public sins, and those stomach-wrenching private sins. Worst of all, by our own power we cannot erase or pay for the smallest of sins.

This is precisely why we need a Savior.

That Savior comes to us in Jesus. By His perfect life, which fulfilled the Law and rejected Satan's temptations, Jesus did what we could not. In His suffering and death, He paid the price our transgressions had earned. Now, with faith in the risen Redeemer, we are given forgiveness and the powerful assurance we have been readmitted into God's family of the saved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive me for trying to cover my sin rather than repenting of them. Create a penitent heart within me, a heart which calls out, "Lord have mercy!" Then because of Jesus' sacrifice, may I be raised up to give thanks for what He has done. In Jesus' Name. Amen. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
