C.H.U.R.C.H. MINISTRY for National Day of Prayer Breakfast Items!

GREETINGS ALL YOU St. John's C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry go-getters!!!!!!!!!!

On Thursday, May 3, 2012 we are hosting a National Day of Prayer observance like we did last year.  We are serving a continental breakfast in the church overflow area from 6:30 AM - 7:00 AM.

At 7:00 AM Pastor Klaustermeier will begin a prayer and devotion time in our sanctuary with music by Gene Hilgendorf.

You all have another opportunity to help out by donating the items for the breakfast.  We did have a pretty good turnout last year; but we never really know how many to expect.  I believe the following list should be plenty to serve the folks who come that morning.  Hopefully, some of our Little Lambs and their parents will be able to attend before school begins at 8:15 AM.

Please sign your name by the items listed below

(and note amount you will bring)

Please have your donated items to church

ON Wed. May 2, 2012 for maximum freshness

(Refrigerated items can be put in the refrigerators in the church kitchen - the others on the island in the church kitchen)

PLEASE MARK THE ITEMS YOU BRING

DEVOTION:
By this we know love that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18

"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times ...."

That's the way Charles Dickens began his novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Those words also accurately describe the last few weeks in the life of a 12-year-old North Carolina boy, Nolan Turner.

First, let's talk about the worst of times. Turner was born with Spina bifida, a birth defect which caused him to be confined to a wheelchair. Even though he has been saddled with a physical challenge, he has risen to that challenge and is an avid player of wheelchair basketball.

On March 22nd Turner was trying to raise some money, so he might introduce his classmates to his favorite sport. He was doing okay with that task when a man came up to him, made some small talk, picked up Turner's donation jar and walked away.

Turner called out, but the man disappeared through a nearby woods. He disappeared with $250 he had stolen from a boy in a wheelchair.

Now I know Luther said we are supposed to "put the best construction on everything," and I've tried hard to do so, but, bottom line, I can't think of a single best construction I can place on someone who would do such a thing. The culprit makes "stealing candy from a baby" look like charity work. It's the kind of thing that can turn a young man to bitterness.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the best of times.

People who heard about what happened to Turner were shocked such a thing could happen. Now those folks, many of whom were Christian, didn't react with mere words and talk; they responded in deed.

Since his story hit the news Nolan has been flooded with notes, letters, cards and cash from these folks who wanted to reflect the love of the Lord Jesus. They wanted to assure the 12-year-old that the Holy Spirit can inspire more people to do good, than the devil can motivate toward evil.

Now I don't know if the charitable folks of the world always outnumber the stealing folks, but I'm glad in Nolan Turner's case that is the way the story concludes.

God's people loved not just in word and talk -- they loved in deed and truth.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, if it be possible, let the work of those who would steal from children in wheelchairs be hindered and halted. Turn around such sad, sinful souls, so they may know their sins can be forgiven by the Lord Jesus. Further, may the work done by Christians in the Savior's Name be blessed. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Just talked to Kevin:  Sarah and the baby are both fine.  Sarah is pretty banged and bruised up, but no broken bones and no injuries whatsoever to the baby.  She will be able to go home from the hospital today.  It is a miracle as she was t-boned on Hwy K and the car flipped three times.  God is good!

DEVOTION:
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. ... How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will. Hebrews 2:1, 3-4

Moored at Hokkaido, Japan, the 164-foot Japanese ship, the Ryou-Un Maru, was destined to be cut up and sent to the scrap heap.

That's when fate intervened in the form of last year's tsunami.

The violence of the waves broke the ship free of its moorings and sent her adrift. She has been adrift on an ever-so-slow voyage across the Pacific ever since. For those of you who are wondering what ever-so-slow means, in this case, in recent weeks, it means the ship has been moving forward at the rate of a mile a day.

Of course, a drifting ship is not a good thing. When a drifting ship sneaks into the crowded sea lanes, there is always the danger of collision. If the drifter goes aground and breaks up, there is an oil spill to contend with. Nobody knew how much diesel fuel was still left on the Ryuo-Un Maru, but her tanks could hold up to 2,000 gallons of the black stuff. That could be a mess.

All of this explains why a U.S. Coast Guard cutter put an end to the ship's drifting. At first, the U.S. vessel peppered the Ryuo-Un Maru with 25 mm shells. Then they switched to the more powerful 50 mm. It took about four hours for the vessel to go down in 6,000-feet-deep water and 180 miles from the Alaskan coast.

Nope, aimless drifting is not a good thing: not for a ship, not for a Christian.

That's the warning the writer of the book of Hebrews was giving when he wrote: "we must pay much closer attention to what we've heard lest we drift away."

It makes little difference whether you lived then or now, there are many voices trying to drown out the true redemption message the Lord has given us in the life, suffering, murder and resurrection of His Son.

You're heard those voices. There are those who say, "Jesus' substitution for us never happened and the Bible is a myth." There are others who say, "Some of it happened, but we can't be sure what is truth and what is fiction. And, of course, there are those who say, "It doesn't make any difference what you believe as long as you sincerely believe in something."

To any and all who would undermine Scriptural truth, our Daily Devotion passage counters with this encouraging reminder: look closely and don't drift. Jesus has risen and salvation's work is done. Pay attention and believe: by faith in the risen Redeemer we are saved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord there are many who would love to see Christians set adrift from You. Today I pray You will keep us safely anchored in the truth of Scripture and the factual story of salvation begun and completed by our Savior. In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions. 2 Timothy 4:3

The story for today's Daily Devotion was suggested by old friend and Lutheran Hour Ministries' supporter, Mr. Ian Adnams, of Adnams Group, a Canadian consulting firm.

Years ago, a Minnesota highway patrolman told me about a motorist whose car was stopped along the side of the road. Although not a mechanic, the officer gave the vehicle a once-over. Sitting behind the wheel, he turned the key and saw the gas gauge was solidly buried in EMPTY. When he shared the problem with the motorist, the fellow furrowed his brow and asked, "Tell me, will it hurt the car if I drive it home this way?"

The officer, who swears the story is true, was amazed the individual didn't understand how important it was for his vehicle to have some gas in the tank. When it comes to going somewhere, having gas in the tank is not of moderate importance.

The same is true when it comes to saving faith. You've got to have something -- the right something in the tank -- or you're not going anywhere, at least not anywhere you want to go.

You probably knew that, didn't you?

Of course, you did. Still, I had to ask. I had to ask because a nationwide survey in Canada has discovered the majority of Canadians do not consider religion to be important.

According to the survey of that great nation, two-thirds of the population believe in God; they just don't believe religion is important.

This takes me back to the devo's original story; you remember, the one about the guy who ran out of gas.

That motorist could believe whatever he wanted about gasoline. He could believe it was unimportant. He could believe it was too expensive. He could believe you could put water in the tank rather than gas. You can believe whatever you want, but unless you believe the right thing, unless you have gas in the tank, you're not going anywhere.

No matter how sincere your beliefs might be.

Similarly, human beings can believe what they want about sin, salvation and Jesus. You can believe the Christ was a great teacher, a fine moralist, a brilliant philosopher, a speaker of wisdom and profound thoughts.

But if Jesus, the Savior isn't in your heart, if He's not more than moderately important to you, well, you're not going anywhere, at least not anywhere you want to go.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You gave Your life to forgive my sins and save my soul. Make my heart one of thanksgiving and grant a powerful witness be made to those who cannot see the greatness of Your sacrifice. This I ask in Your Name. Amen. .

DEVOTION:
(Jesus said) "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." John 5:24

A famous quote of questioned origins is this: "Nothing in life is certain other than death and taxes."

Maybe, but we will say more about that later.

The truth is many people seem to play the lottery, as if winning the jackpot were a sure thing. Now I'll admit there is some logic to the fact that somebody must eventually win that mega-million-dollar jackpot, and since somebody is going to win, everybody figures it might as well be them.

You know the logic: the odds in winning are 50-50. Either you win or you don't.

Now without speaking about the poor use of financial gifts the Lord has entrusted to us, let's look at the facts. To do so, I'd like you to consider the story of Bill Isles of Wichita. Not so long ago Isles bought three tickets for the Mega Millions lottery.

Naturally he did so hoping to be one of the winners in the record-breaking jackpot.

Hours after he bought those tickets, Isles, a storm spotter for the National Weather Service was struck by lightning. Now, he is pretty much okay. He wasn't burned and his heart, along with his memory, have done a bit of jumping around, but he'll be all right.

The point of Isles' story is this:

o the odds of him being hit by lightning are 1 in 835,000;

o the odds of him winning the Mega Millions jackpot were 1 in 175 million.

This leads me to conclude, if you don't think you're going to get struck by lightning, you really, really ought not to think you're going to win that lottery.

Or, as a pastor speaking from a completely practical point of view, your money can better be used in support of your Lord, your family and your church.

Indeed, I encourage you to use your cash for those purposes because, along with being sure about death and taxes, you can be sure of their love, too.

And if you're not sure of your family's love, you can be absolutely positive about the love of the Savior -- the Savior who gave His life so you might be forgiven and saved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks for a Savior whose sure love has guaranteed me a place in heaven. Grant that everything I do may show my appreciation of His sacrifice. In His Name. Amen.
